Our Visiting God

Our Visiting God

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1Pet 2:12 Having your manner of life excellent among the
Gentiles, so that in the matter concerning which they speak
against you as evildoers they may, by your good works, as they
see them with their own eyes, glorify God in the day of His
visitation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Greek word translated "visitation" is episkopes. The basic
meaning of this word is to observe, inspect, oversee, look
upon. The day of visitation is the day when God will look upon
His pilgrim people, as a shepherd over his wandering sheep. He
will look upon them and will become the Shepherd and Overseer
of their souls (2:25). Hence, the day of visitation is the
time of God's overseeing care. To make the matter simple, we
may say that the day of God's visitation is the day God comes
to visit us. When God pays us a visit, that is the day of
visitation.

I can testify that…deep within I often have the feeling that
God is visiting us in His overseeing care. In meeting after
meeting, God comes to pay us a visit. Many of us can testify
that we have experienced Him as the divine Visitor in recent
days.

What does God intend to do when He comes to visit us? Does He
come to judge us? No, instead of coming to judge us, God
visits us for the purpose of looking upon us and observing how
we are doing and what we are doing. It may seem that He says
to us, "How is everything with you? What are you doing? Is
everything all right?" God's visitation is like that of a
shepherd. It is also the visit of an overseer. This is the
reason Peter speaks of the Lord as the Shepherd and Overseer
of our souls (2:25). Our Savior is the Shepherd and Overseer.
He shepherds us and oversees us in order to take good care of
us.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Selling Your Soul, by Patrick D. Odum

[Jesus said] Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves
and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save
their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will
find it. What good will it be for you to gain the whole world, yet
forfeit your soul? Or what can you give in exchange for your soul?
For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his
angels, and then he will reward everyone according to what they
have done (Matthew 16:24-27).

First there was the guy in Australia who auctioned off his life on
eBay, including his house and its furnishings, his car, and even an
introduction to his friends and a trial at his job, for nearly
$400,000. That story was full of interesting insights into how we
define ourselves and for what amount we think we'd be willing to trade
our lives. Walter Scott, a twenty-four-year-old New Zealand man, is
apparently going even farther.

Walter recently put his soul up for bid on the New Zealand auction site
TradeMe.

He's received over a hundred bids. As of Wednesday, the highest bid was
$189.

Walter characterizes his soul on the site as "merry old" He says he had
been thinking about selling his soul for some time: "I can't see it,
touch it or feel it, but I can sell it, so I'm going to palm it off to
the highest bidder." Walter reassures potential bidders that his soul
is in "pretty good nick" except for a rough patch six years ago when he
reached the legal drinking age. The winning bidder, Walter is quick to
point out, would only be entitled to his soul and would not be able to
own or control him in any way. He also says that the successful bidder
will receive a framed deed of "soul ownership." So, there's that.

So here's what I'm wondering: Whatever happened to the days when a
person would trade their soul to the Devil for knowledge or prosperity
or a World Series or the ability to play guitar? A hundred and
eighty-nine dollars. You can't buy a Wii for that.

According to Jesus, of course, Walter is seriously undervaluing
himself. According to him, there isn't enough money, property, power,
pleasure, or fame in the world to make it a good deal for Walter. A
soul isn't some part of us, some spiritual trinket that we can excise
and hand out with a certificate of ownership like a Franklin Mint
collectible. In fact, in Matthew 16 there's no reason to use the word
"life" in verse 25 and "soul" in verse 26: they're the same word. Your
life is your soul is your life, and whatever you call it there's
nothing worth giving it up for except Jesus.

And yet we do. Laugh or roll your eyes or shake your head at Walter
Scott all you want, but he's not doing anything that's all that
different than other people do every day. He's a bit more blatant about
it, and it doesn't look like he's going to get quite as much in the
bargain as others, but every day people everywhere trade themselves for
one thing or another. And that one thing or another is never worth the
cost.

It's subtle, and seductive, and here's how it works. It begins, maybe,
with a felt need: a certain standard of living, or a certain amount of
respect, or a particular status in society. That need becomes a matter
of life and death, the bare minimum I must have for happiness. And so I
start working so many hours that my family starts to suffer, my kids
start to miss me but eventually learn to get along without me, my
spouse becomes a stranger. Maybe I cut some ethical corners. Maybe I
take advantage of a colleague to vault up the corporate ladder. And
maybe I do get what I want, and then one day I wake up and look in the
mirror and wonder how I became who I am. I've gained the world, and yet
to get it I've forfeited myself. My soul. My life.

Jesus invites us to live the lives God created us to live!

For others, the price is love, or approval, or comfort, or escape. They
all have at least two things in common. The first is that they can
become so important to us that we will give up our true lives as God's
people, lives that by his grace will stretch on into eternity, to have
them. We'll give up a life shared with God for some piddling, paltry
existence with the trinkets that we think we want.

The second thing they all have in common is that they never deliver on
their promise. In the end, everything we think is so important will
crumble away to dust and leave us with empty hands, empty hearts, and
empty lives.

You remember Gollum, don't you, from The Lord of the Rings? He wasn't
always so bad -- wasn't always Gollum, in fact. He was a creature named
Smeagol until the glint of the Ring caught his eye and he gave up
everything else to live alone, to live for nothing more than to have
and to keep his Precious. It killed him in the end, of course -- but he
lost his life and himself long before he died. "Whoever wants to save
their life will lose it."

Things like that don't just happen in books and movies, and the world
is full of any number of things that quickly and easily become our
Precious and turn us into creatures we wouldn't recognize if we could
look through time and see how things would turn out. That's why Jesus
says what he says; that's why following him involves saying no to self
in the same way he did. It isn't that Jesus doesn't want us to enjoy
life or prefers that we be miserable. It's that he knows how easily our
efforts to "save our lives" -- to have what we want -- can wind up
costing us our lives. "Whoever loses their life for me will find it."
Just sounds wrong, doesn't it? It would be, of course, except that
Jesus knows what life really is, what it's really about. It turns out
that we aren't made for spending our lives chasing all our ambitions
and pursuing every whim. That isn't who we really are, and when we live
like that we eventually lose ourselves. "Our" lives aren't really so
much about us at all as they are about fulfilling God's purposes for
us. It's on that criterion, and that one alone, that our lives will be
judged "success" or "failure."

When Jesus invites us to drop our attempts to create ideal lives and
follow him instead, he invites us to live the lives God created us to
live. And so it's true; the only way to save our lives is to lose them,
and the surest way to lose our lives is to be hung up on saving them.

So may we take him seriously. May we live lives of eternal significance
and purpose. May we resist the temptation to sell ourselves out to the
highest bidder. Or, if we do, may we always remember who the highest
bidder really is -- the one who offered himself to give us life.

Morning & Evening -- Numbers 2:31 and Joel 2:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, July 18, 2008

MORNING:

"They shall go hindmost with their standards."
-- Numbers 2:31

The camp of Dan brought up the rear when the armies of Israel were on
the march. The Danites occupied the hindmost place, but what mattered
the position, since they were as truly part of the host as were the
foremost tribes; they followed the same fiery cloudy pillar, they ate
of the same manna, drank of the same spiritual rock, and journeyed to
the same inheritance. Come, my heart, cheer up, though last and least;
it is thy privilege to be in the army, and to fare as they fare who
lead the van. Some one must be hindmost in honour and esteem, some one
must do menial work for Jesus, and why should not I? In a poor village,
among an ignorant peasantry; or in a back street, among degraded
sinners, I will work on, and "go hindmost with my standard."

The Danites occupied a very useful place. Stragglers have to be picked
up upon the march, and lost property has to be gathered from the field.
Fiery spirits may dash forward over untrodden paths to learn fresh
truth, and win more souls to Jesus; but some of a more conservative
spirit may be well engaged in reminding the church of her ancient
faith, and restoring her fainting sons. Every position has its duties,
and the slowly moving children of God will find their peculiar state
one in which they may be eminently a blessing to the whole host.

The rear guard is a place of danger. There are foes behind us as well
as before us. Attacks may come from any quarter. We read that Amalek
fell upon Israel, and slew some of the hindmost of them. The
experienced Christian will find much work for his weapons in aiding
those poor doubting, desponding, wavering, souls, who are hindmost in
faith, knowledge, and joy. These must not be left unaided, and
therefore be it the business of well-taught saints to bear their
standards among the hindmost. My soul, do thou tenderly watch to help
the hindmost this day.

EVENING:

"Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one
in his path."
-- Joel 2:8

Locusts always keep their rank, and although their number is legion,
they do not crowd upon each other, so as to throw their columns into
confusion. This remarkable fact in natural history shows how thoroughly
the Lord has infused the spirit of order into his universe, since the
smallest animate creatures are as much controlled by it as are the
rolling spheres or the seraphic messengers. It would be wise for
believers to be ruled by the same influence in all their spiritual
life. In their Christian graces no one virtue should usurp the sphere
of another, or eat out the vitals of the rest for its own support.
Affection must not smother honesty, courage must not elbow weakness out
of the field, modesty must not jostle energy, and patience must not
slaughter resolution. So also with our duties, one must not interfere
with another; public usefulness must not injure private piety; church
work must not push family worship into a corner. It is ill to offer God
one duty stained with the blood of another. Each thing is beautiful in
its season, but not otherwise. It was to the Pharisee that Jesus said,
"This ought ye to have done, and not to have left the other undone."
The same rule applies to our personal position, we must take care to
know our place, take it, and keep to it. We must minister as the Spirit
has given us ability, and not intrude upon our fellow servant's domain.
Our Lord Jesus taught us not to covet the high places, but to be
willing to be the least among the brethren. Far from us be an envious,
ambitious spirit, let us feel the force of the Master's command, and do
as he bids us, keeping rank with the rest of the host. To-night let us
see whether we are keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of
peace, and let our prayer be that, in all the churches of the Lord
Jesus, peace and order may prevail.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Faith Really Is...2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Faith Really Is...2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:3 NIV

Yesterday we looked at the definition to faith as found in the Bible. Today, we expand upon that definition with an illustration of faith from God's Word. In verse 1 and 2, we learn that faith is believing in God, even when we can't see Him. In verse 3, the author of Hebrews gives us an example.

Think about it for a moment. Who made the grass in your yard (if in fact you have grass this time of year)? Who hung the stars in place? Who formed the mountains, put water in the ocean, decided to give a zebra stripes? Who constructed the trees of the forest and who makes rain drops appear?

I hope your answer to all of the preceeding questions is God the Creator. I hope you believe that God is the One who, just as Genesis 1 says, made all living things. If you don't believe in creation, you will have a very hard time believing the rest of the faith chapter found in Hebrews 11. If God couldn't speak life into existence, could He really part the Red Sea? If He couldn't breathe His life into you and me, could He really provide the manna and quail for the children of Israel?

You and I weren't there at the creation. We don't have a picture of the animals appearing out of what seemed to be no where. Most of us probably couldn't even win a court trial proving God as the Creator. But, we believe it, because God said it was so! We believe it because the Bible tells us it is true. We believe it because the choice we have made in our life is to believe Him, even when it doesn't make sense to a natural world.

Faith is believing God, even when you can't see God. Just like we believe in His creation.

That is Faith!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Mystery Of Believing"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 18, 2008

THE MYSTERY OF BELIEVING

And he said, Who art Thou, Lord?

Acts 9:6
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ac+9:6&sr=1

By the miracle of Redemption Saul of Tarsus was turned in one second
from a strong-willed, intense Pharisee into a humble, devoted slave
of the Lord Jesus.

There is nothing miraculous about the things we can explain. We
command what we are able to explain, consequently it is natural to
seek to explain. It is not natural to obey; nor is it necessarily
sinful to disobey. There is no moral virtue in obedience unless there
is a recognition of a higher authority in the one who dictates. It is
possibly an emancipation to the other person if he does not obey. If
one man says to another - 'You must,' and - 'You shall,' he breaks
the human spirit and unfits it for God. A man is a slave for obeying
unless behind his obedience there is a recognition of a holy God.
Many a soul begins to come to God when he flings off being religious,
because there is only one Master of the human heart, and that is not
religion but Jesus Christ. But woe be to me if when I see Him I say -
I will not. He will never insist that I do, but I have begun to sign
the death warrant of the Son of God in my soul. When I stand face to
face with Jesus Christ and say - I will not, He will never insist;
but I am backing away from the recreating power of His Redemption. It
is a matter of indifference to God's grace how abominable I am if I
come to the light; but woe be to me if I refuse the light (see John
3:19-21).

Praying with Paul : "God's Word"

GOD'S WORD

1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+2:13-20

Dear Father, real source of the Bible,

Thank you for the word proclaimed in the New Testament. Help us
accept it for what it really is, not mere words written by men, but
the word of God, your will revealed to us and made alive in our
lives.

May Jewish members of your church bear a great witness to Jesus as
their rightful Messiah. May non-Jewish members follow their example
and be willing to suffer with them for the salvation of mankind,
Jew and non-Jew.

Father, be with those young disciples who have come to you through
our efforts, even our own children. They will be our hope and joy
and crown of boasting when Jesus returns, for we shall be together
with them and with him. They will be our glory and our joy.

In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

WJD! -- Then Come! -- Mark 10:21

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/

Then Come!

Jesus looked at the man. Jesus felt love for him. Jesus said,
"There is still one more thing you need to do. Go and sell
everything you have. Give the money to the poor people. You
will have a reward in heaven. Then come and follow me."

-- Mark 10:21 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus had genuine love and compassion for this man. He was so close. He
was headed in the right direction. But, Jesus wanted his heart to yield
and not just his actions. So he called him to do what is hardest -- the
"one thing" he lacked. Could you do this? What is the one thing you
lack?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, please don't let greed, love for money, or my desire for
things block me from totally surrendering my heart to you. I want to be
yours -- heart, soul, mind, and strength. I want to be like you --
holy, righteous, compassionate, and generous. Humble me gently and
conform me completely so that my stubborn will is completely yielded to
your will. In Jesus' name. Amen.
