Not Merely Enjoying His Presence, but Living Christ

Not Merely Enjoying His Presence, but Living Christ

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bible Verses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phil. 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
(22) But if I am to live in the flesh, if this to me is
fruit for my work, then I do not know what I will choose.
(23) But I am constrained between the two, having the desire
to depart and be with Christ, for this is far better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In verse 21 Paul says, "For to me to live is Christ, and to
die is gain." In a practical way, the gain in verse 21 is the
presence of Christ. When Paul said, "To die is gain," he
meant that to die is to enjoy Christ's presence in a better
way. In verse 23 Paul says that his desire is to depart and
to be with Christ. To be with Christ is a matter of degree,
not of place. While Paul was desiring to be with Christ in a
higher degree, he was already with Him continually. Through
his physical death, he would be with Christ to a fuller
extent than he enjoyed in this earthly life.

When Paul was in prison, he enjoyed Christ and experienced
Him in two ways. One way was to enjoy the presence of Christ,
and the other way was to live Christ. There is a vast
difference between enjoying the presence of Christ and living
Christ. For example, I may enjoy my wife's presence, but I
cannot live her. By this we see that we may enjoy a person's
presence without living that person. Paul not only enjoyed
the Lord's presence, but he also lived Him. He knew that when
he died he would have no further opportunity to live Christ,
but he would enter into a higher enjoyment of the presence of
Christ. Therefore, to die would be gain. What Paul valued was
not only the presence of Christ, but also the opportunity to
live Him.

Throughout the centuries, Christians have been encouraged to
practice the presence of the Lord. However, there has been
little encouragement, if any, to live Him. Many believers are
familiar with the famous book The Practice of the Presence of
God and have been encouraged by it to endeavor to live in
God's presence. However, the concept of practicing the
presence of God is mainly an Old Testament concept, not a New
Testament one. Yes, according to the New Testament, we may
enjoy the Lord's presence on the one hand. But, on the other
hand, we should practice living Him. We have not only the
Lord's presence, but we also have His Person. Not only do we
need to be in His presence; we also need to be one person
with Him and live Him. To live Christ is a much deeper
experience than simply to be in His presence. Living Him goes
far beyond the enjoyment of His presence. First Corinthians
6:17 says, "He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit."
We are one spirit with the Lord not only that we may enjoy
His presence, but even more that we live Him.

Today's Verse : 1 John 4:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 7, 2009

VERSE:
We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given
us of his Spirit.

-- 1 John 4:13
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+4:13

THOUGHT:
Our sign of authenticity showing we are truly God's children is
the Holy Spirit who lives in us. The Spirit helps bring forth the
character of God in our lives (Gal. 5:22). The Spirit helps us when
we pray (Rom. 8:26-27). The Spirit empowers us to overcome sin
(Rom. 8:13) and gives us strength to do things we would never
imagine were possible (Eph. 3:14-21). The Spirit comforts us in our
brokenness and makes God's presence real in our lives (John
14:15-26). The Spirit is the truest sign that we are God's children
(Rom. 8:9, 14-16). Thank God for the blessed Holy Spirit!

PRAYER:
Father, I praise you for your holiness, majesty, and power. I
thank you for your loving grace. I am humbled by your sacrificial
love that has saved me. But today, dear Father, I thank you most of
all for your Holy Spirit, who lives in me, who empowers me, who
cleanses me, who comforts me, and who makes your fatherhood
accessible and real to me. Thank you, in the name of Jesus, from
the bottom of my heart! Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Eraser

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Eraser
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
My eyes fail looking for your promise. I say, When will you comfort me? Psalm 119:82 NIV

Sometimes that's all we can say. Sometimes life produces such heartaches and pain that we simply faint before the Lord and wait for His deliverance. At those times, there is nothing else we can do.

Maybe you have felt that way before. Someone you love dies suddenly. Your spouse walks in and says, It's over. Your children turn away from your guidance. Your checkbook is in the red, and there are still bills to be paid. The doctor says, There is nothing else I can do.

You've been there. If not, you will. Maybe you are there right now. Life has socked it to you and it hurts. You want to cry, but the tears have long since dried up. What now? God, when will you come? What is taking you so long, God?

Dear friend, precious child of God, let nothing move you! You are still in the mighty and merciful hands of an Almighty God! The Creator o f the universe, who holds the stars in place and gives the eagles their desire to soar, is the same God who has promised to never forsake you!

God made a vow to give you victory and hope. He has declared you as His child if you have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, and there is nothing that can separate you from His love! Your future is secure.

I must confess that I cannot tell you that your troubles will disappear. I can't tell you when the trials here on Earth will go away. I can't erase your painful memories. I can't assure you there will be no more tears.

What I can tell you is that God hasn't moved. He has not changed. His promises have lasted throughout the generations, and they still hold true! God will call you into His presence someday! The Master will right all wrongs and deliver you from your enemies.

If you can just hold on to that little bit of faith, He's coming soon!

Unveiling of Legacy, by Ron Rose

A good life gets passed on to the grandchildren ... (Proverbs 13:22
MSG).

Preparation

Thomas Cahill writes about history, legacy really. In The Gift of the
Jews, Cahill explores the impact of "the God of Abraham." This
Creator-God gives us a beginning and an end; he defines justice and
mercy, refines our conscience. And, as Cahill states, "Most of our best
words—new, adventure, surprise, unique, individual, person, vocation,
time, history, future, freedom, progress, spirit: faith, hope,
justice—are the gifts of the Jews," Abraham's legacy to us.

Stay with me as we sneak a peek into our legacy -- our view of life and
living.

For better or worse, my dad shaped my view of the world. Part of his
personal story was clouded by years of alcohol addiction, but his
perspective about life has become clearer and more meaningful as the
years have gone by. From my dad, I learned to never throw away what
could be fixed, to refrain from freeze-framing people (everyone can and
will change), and to think outside the box (look for unexpected
options). Over the years I have become his legacy, unwrapping the best
and forgetting the worst.

Legacy is the wisdom, convictions, experiences, and values that have
been handed down to us from the generations before us. It shapes our
worldview, providing wisdom and direction for the next generation.

Legacy is powerful. It is a gift we are compelled to open, but after
opening it, we are faced with challenges and choices. Will we accept
the gift and find a place to display it and share it, toss it, or rebel
against it?

What have you done with the legacy you were given?

How have your parents, your early years, your grandparents shaped your
perspective on life?

Then the bonus question: How much of your faith is yours and how much
of it is what you inherited from others?

Inspiration

A few days ago I was blessed by a "holy moment."

Mearl's body was at the funeral home; the memorial service was set for
the next day, so most of the details related to death had been dealt
with. Now it was time to talk.

We gathered in the family room to tell stories, share memories, and
unwrap the legacy of Mearl Jacobs. She had lived a life filled with
stories, from the dust bowl of Oklahoma to Southern California to
Abilene, Texas. Most people didn't know that she worked for thirty
years at Rockwell International and helped prepare the budget for the
first space shuttle; or that even at 82 years of age, she loved the
highest of the high-heeled shoes; or that although she really didn't
care much for baseball, she loved listening to Vin Scully call the LA
Dodger's games because her son, John, loved baseball.

Before long, the conversation turned from stories about Mearl, to
stories of how she changed and shaped the lives in the room.

Her daughter, Carol, said, "Just a few hours before Mom died she said
she wanted to go home. 'I asked her if she meant back to her
apartment?' She said, 'NO!' I asked, 'Home to be with Jesus?' 'YES!'"

That did it. The legacy began to emerge. A tapestry of love and grace
and service was realized that night. Mearl had lived a life that rubbed
off on the young and old alike. When she rubbed off on you, you left a
different person, a better person. She was gifted that way.

She knew how to demonstrate the things that really mattered. She stood
up for values that she held dear and she always seemed to know how to
grace people, to accept them "as is." Her grandkids talked of her
perpetual, unconditional acceptance of them, no matter what.

It's her legacy.

Some things have to be seen to be understood: love, forgiveness,
acceptance, and faith are a few. Mearl knew how to help you see. Her
life was an investment in family and church and friends -- in people.

The fingerprints of God were all over that room. It was a legacy
celebration, and I was honored to feel the holiness of it. Mearl had
seen the best in these kids before they had seen it in themselves and
now they understood. The gift was unwrapped; the legacy unveiled.

The next day, it was clear that Mearl was still around. We buried the
body, but she lives in all those present and beyond. She is still
hugging and giving and loving and smiling and if you are really in need
of it, she is still giving "that look."

It's her legacy.

Motivation

You have received a legacy and you are building a legacy. They are both
bigger than you. Make the most of both.

What is it that you want said about you when you're gone? What rubbings
are you leaving on the people in your family and in your world?

Like those before you, you are shaping the worldview of those who come
after you. So get on with it.

Regardless of what others do or have done, YOU have the choice!

Visit the i2eye page and take the challenge. Listen to the spots and
see what God does with 21 days: http://www.faithteam.org/talks.htm

Morning & Evening -- Ephesians 6:18 and James 5:16

MORNING:

"Praying always."
-- Ephesians 6:18

What multitudes of prayers we have put up from the first moment when we
learned to pray. Our first prayer was a prayer for ourselves; we asked
that God would have mercy upon us, and blot out our sin. He heard us.
But when he had blotted out our sins like a cloud, then we had more
prayers for ourselves. We have had to pray for sanctifying grace, for
constraining and restraining grace; we have been led to crave for a
fresh assurance of faith, for the comfortable application of the
promise, for deliverance in the hour of temptation, for help in the
time of duty, and for succour in the day of trial. We have been
compelled to go to God for our souls, as constant beggars asking for
everything. Bear witness, children of God, you have never been able to
get anything for your souls elsewhere. All the bread your soul has
eaten has come down from heaven, and all the water of which it has
drank has flowed from the living rock-Christ Jesus the Lord. Your soul
has never grown rich in itself; it has always been a pensioner upon the
daily bounty of God; and hence your prayers have ascended to heaven for
a range of spiritual mercies all but infinite. Your wants were
innumerable, and therefore the supplies have been infinitely great, and
your prayers have been as varied as the mercies have been countless.
Then have you not cause to say, "I love the Lord, because he hath heard
the voice of my supplication"? For as your prayers have been many, so
also have been God's answers to them. He has heard you in the day of
trouble, has strengthened you, and helped you, even when you
dishonoured him by trembling and doubting at the mercy-seat. Remember
this, and let it fill your heart with gratitude to God, who has thus
graciously heard your poor weak prayers. "Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits."

EVENING:

"Pray one for another."
-- James 5:16

As an encouragement cheerfully to offer intercessory prayer, remember
that such prayer is the sweetest God ever hears, for the prayer of
Christ is of this character. In all the incense which our Great High
Priest now puts into the golden censer, there is not a single grain for
himself. His intercession must be the most acceptable of all
supplications-and the more like our prayer is to Christ's, the sweeter
it will be; thus while petitions for ourselves will be accepted, our
pleadings for others, having in them more of the fruits of the Spirit,
more love, more faith, more brotherly kindness, will be, through the
precious merits of Jesus, the sweetest oblation that we can offer to
God, the very fat of our sacrifice. Remember, again, that intercessory
prayer is exceedingly prevalent. What wonders it has wrought! The Word
of God teems with its marvellous deeds. Believer, thou hast a mighty
engine in thy hand, use it well, use it constantly, use it with faith,
and thou shalt surely be a benefactor to thy brethren. When thou hast
the King's ear, speak to him for the suffering members of his body.
When thou art favoured to draw very near to his throne, and the King
saith to thee, "Ask, and I will give thee what thou wilt," let thy
petitions be, not for thyself alone, but for the many who need his aid.
If thou hast grace at all, and art not an intercessor, that grace must
be small as a grain of mustard seed. Thou hast just enough grace to
float thy soul clear from the quicksand, but thou hast no deep floods
of grace, or else thou wouldst carry in thy joyous bark a weighty cargo
of the wants of others, and thou wouldst bring back from thy Lord, for
them, rich blessings which but for thee they might not have obtained:-

"Oh, let my hands forget their skill,
My tongue be silent, cold, and still,
This bounding heart forget to beat,
If I forget the mercy-seat!"

My Utmost For His Highest : "Are You Ready To Be Offered?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 6, 2009

ARE YOU READY TO BE OFFERED?

I am already being poured out as a drink offering.

2 Timothy 4:6
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2ti+4:6&sr=1

"I am ready to be offered." It is a transaction of will, not of
sentiment. Tell God you are ready to be offered; then let the
consequences be what they may, there is no strand of complaint now,
no matter what God chooses. God puts you through the crisis in
private, no one person can help an other. Externally the life may be
the same; the difference is in will. Go through the crisis in will,
then when it comes externally there will he no thought of the cost.
If you do not transact in will with God along this line, you will end
in awakening sympathy for yourself.

"Bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar."
The altar means fire - burning and purification and insulation for
one purpose only, the destruction of every affinity that God has not
started and of every attachment that is not an attachment in God. You
do not destroy it, God does; you bind the sacrifice to the horns of
the altar; and see that you do not give way to self-pity when the
fire begins. After this way of fire, there is nothing that oppresses
or depresses. When the crisis arises, you realize that things cannot
touch you as they used to do. What is your way of fire?

Tell God you are ready to be offered, and God will prove Himself to
be all you ever dreamed He would be.

Praying with Paul : "God's Children, Israel"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S CHILDREN, ISRAEL

Romans 9:1-18
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+9:1-18

Dear Father,

Keep me and all who are related to me from any hint of hatred
toward Israel, your ancient people.

Let us love them and pray for their good always, longing so much
for their salvation that we, like Paul, should have sorrow and
unceasing anguish because of their alienation from you.

Father, you gave such honor and wonderful gifts to them: You
called them by your name; they are Israelites. To them belong the
sonship, the glory, the worship, and the promises. To them belong
the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, came the
Messiah, your Son Jesus Christ, who is over all things, God blessed
forever. Amen.

Their rejection of Christ does not mean your word has failed. Your
word never fails. It is people who fail.

In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- A Family Address -- Matthew 5:1-2

A Family Address

Jesus saw the many people that were there. So Jesus went up
on a hill and sat down. His followers came to him. Jesus
taught the people. He said:

-- Matthew 5:1-2 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
A certain characteristic can define a family. Many members of the
family can be distinguished by this special characteristic. It may be a
physically prominent feature. It may be a phrase or a way of saying
things. It may be certain traditions. It may be a similar nervous tic.
The Sermon on the Mount (which begins with the next few verses) is
about the Kingdom Family of God. Those who live in it -- or better yet
-- live it, share a common character that shows that the Father in
Heaven reigns over their hearts. Those who hear the Sermon on the Mount
are the crowds, but those who listen, those who are defined by it, are
the disciples. They are the ones who put into practice the ethic and
character of Jesus, not because it is some law they must keep, but
because it reflects the character of a Father whom they love.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O gracious and Almighty God, thank you for bringing me into your
family. May my life reflect the light of your glory and the character
of your holiness. I want your righteousness to be the dominant feature
in my life, so I come and sit at the feet of Jesus to learn how to live
in a way that honors and reflects you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
