=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Last Thoughts or Long Commitments?, by Phil Ware

The cell is dark and dank. The odor is unspeakable, seasoned as it is
from unwashed humanity stacked like cord wood in a tiny cell. The fowl
body odor is punctuated with the awful smell of human waste and urine.
Very little light filters down into the place where Timothy is
imprisoned. He hears distant footfalls as the jailer comes down the
stone stairway, opens the outer jail door, then slams it closed again.
Someone re-locks it from the other side.

Will he be released? Will he be executed? Does he have a visitor? Is
this just more moldy bread in lukewarm slop? Is he going to be beaten?
Will he be moved? Or are they coming for one of his many cell mates?

A thousand thoughts jam Timothy's adrenaline-juiced brain as his body
tenses instinctively with the flight or fight reflex. It's amazing what
you can remember and imagine in such circumstances. Flashes of his
mentor's first visit to his home city of Lystra fire in his brain. The
apostle Paul preaches and heals a lame man while preaching. The young
Timothy is amazed. At first, the crowd wants to treat him like a god.
Then, when Paul won't bow to their adulation, the crowd turns on him.
They are further stirred by out-of-towners who hate Paul. Soon, mob
rule takes over. Paul is taken outside town, publicly stoned, and left
for dead.

This was done on the outskirts of Lystra, Tim's home town. He had seen
it. So when Paul had selected Timothy to go on the next missionary
journey not that many months later, Timothy harbored no illusions about
the challenges and dangers he would face. Lois and Eunice, Tim's
grandmother and mother, clearly knew the dreadful possibilities he
faced as he walked down the road and out of sight with Paul to serve
the Lord Jesus (Acts 14:19-20; Acts 16:1-3).

Timothy was brought back to the moment by the sounds of sandals
slapping on stone as they came down the hallway toward his cell.
Timothy remembered Paul's strong doses of "Get after it boy!" (1
Timothy 4:12). Phrases fired in his brain like, "Fan into flame the
gift you have received ..." (2 Timothy 1:6-7) and "Don't be ashamed of
me or of the gospel" (2 Timothy 1:8) and "Speak the truth whether it's
popular or not, because bad times are coming ..." (2 Timothy 4:1-4, all
verses paraphrased). Boy was Paul right ... bad times are coming ....

As the guard clattered the keys at his cell door, not knowing if they
were coming for him or one of the others, Tim flashed to a conversation
with the venerable Doctor Luke. Doc had shared some of his historical
research on the first days of the church in Jerusalem as they traveled
with the apostle Paul. What stuck in Tim's mind now, a true gift of
grace and courage from the Holy Spirit, were two phrases by Peter and
John when they were warned and beaten for speaking about Jesus:

"Whether it's right in God's eyes to listen to you rather than to
God, you decide. As for us, there's no question -- we can't keep
quiet about what we've seen and heard" (Acts 4:19-20 MSG).

The apostles went out of the High Council overjoyed because they
had been given the honor of being dishonored on account of the Name
(Acts 5:41 MSG).

Overjoyed? Honor? Yes! Timothy was resolute. He would honor Christ in
this moment, no matter what.

As the cell door opened, the guard coarsely snapped, "Prisoner
Timotheous of Lystra, get your sorry carcass out of here, you are free
to go. The rest of you slime bags stay back from the door or deal with
the business end of my spear!" (Hebrews 13:23). And Timothy did leave
.. not to hide or return to the safety of Lystra and home, but he
returned to the risk and to the road to share the story of Jesus ... no
matter the cost.

As his mentor declared, so Timothy would live:

That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame,
because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is
able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day (2
Timothy 1:12).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We live in a time of growing hostility to the Gospel of Jesus --
pending U.N. resolutions to make sharing our faith illegal in any
country in the world, legislation in the USA hostile to churches and
religious non-profits, a hostile press, growing world persecution of
believers, and a wave of public sentiment against Christianity in the
culture.

So how are followers of Jesus going to live in such times? Fear?
Hiding? Public whining? Combatant hostility?

Look at the following Scriptures and then make a short summary
statement of your convictions on how you are going to live! Of course
I'd love to have you post them on my blog, ThePhilFiles.com, but
whether you do that or not, please take the time to consciously write
out your own commitment for how you are going to live in these times.
If we are honest, these times have been with us for more than a decade
or two, but we have simply forgotten the call to radical discipleship
and our responsibility to be salt and light in a world of decay and
darkness. So here are a couple of places I'm starting and asking you to
join me.

Principle One: We live before five audiences and I have a
responsibility to live with purpose before each audience! (John
13:34-35; 1 Corinthians 14:23-26; 1 Thessalonians 4:12; 1 John 3:13)

1. Believers, our brothers and sisters in Christ, whom we are to
love.

2. Inquirers, those who are seeking to learn more about Jesus, but
are not yet disciples. These we are to lead to worship and honor
God.

3. Unbelievers or outsiders, those who do not believe, but who are
willing to listen and visit with us. These we are to help to know
our hope in Christ and live in such a way they can see Christ in
us.

4. Enemies, meaning those who count us as enemies. We are to pray for
them and live before them in such a way they can see our good and
godly behavior.

He returned to the risk and to the road to share the story of Jesus.

5. God himself, our Father in heaven. We are to live to honor him and
reflect his character and compassion.

How to live before a growingly hostile world is an issue addressed
repeatedly in the New Testament. I would encourage you to read through
the book of 1 Peter, but the following principles are taken from one
central passage in this letter (1 Peter 3:9-16). In a hostile
environment where our faith is not appreciated, Peter outlines several
guidelines consistent with the rest of his letter:

* Honor God while loving your brothers and sisters.

* Live to be a blessing to others, because we will be blessed by God.

* Do good to others, even if they do evil to you.

* Seek peace with others without being afraid of those who would harm
you.

* Always be ready to share the reason for your hope, and do this with
gentleness and respect.

So what does that say about how you need to live?

Where do you need to change your focus, your lifestyle to impact those
who do not know Christ and especially those who oppose Christians?

How can we help each other live without fear and with the integrity
needed to display God's character and compassion?

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 39:12 and Psalms 19:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, March 16, 2009

MORNING:

"I am a stranger with thee."
-- Psalms 39:12

Yes, O Lord, with thee, but not to thee. All my natural alienation from
thee, thy grace has effectually removed; and now, in fellowship with
thyself, I walk through this sinful world as a pilgrim in a foreign
country. Thou art a stranger in thine own world. Man forgets thee,
dishonours thee, sets up new laws and alien customs, and knows thee
not. When thy dear Son came unto his own, his own received him not. He
was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him
not. Never was foreigner so speckled a bird among the denizens of any
land as thy beloved Son among his mother's brethren. It is no marvel,
then, if I who live the life of Jesus, should be unknown and a stranger
here below. Lord, I would not be a citizen where Jesus was an alien.
His pierced hand has loosened the cords which once bound my soul to
earth, and now I find myself a stranger in the land. My speech seems to
these Babylonians among whom I dwell an outlandish tongue, my manners
are singular, and my actions are strange. A Tartar would be more at
home in Cheapside than I could ever be in the haunts of sinners. But
here is the sweetness of my lot: I am a stranger with thee. Thou art my
fellow-sufferer, my fellow-pilgrim. Oh, what joy to wander in such
blessed society! My heart burns within me by the way when thou dost
speak to me, and though I be a sojourner, I am far more blest than
those who sit on thrones, and far more at home than those who dwell in
their ceiled houses.

"To me remains nor place, nor time:
My country is in every clime;
I can be calm and free from care
On any shore, since God is there.
While place we seek, or place we shun,
The soul finds happiness in none:
But with a God to guide our way,
'Tis equal joy to go or stay."

EVENING:

"Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins."
-- Psalms 19:13

Such was the prayer of the "man after God's own heart." Did holy David
need to pray thus? How needful, then, must such a prayer be for us
babes in grace! It is as if he said, "Keep me back, or I shall rush
headlong over the precipice of sin." Our evil nature, like an
ill-tempered horse, is apt to run away. May the grace of God put the
bridle upon it, and hold it in, that it rush not into mischief. What
might not the best of us do if it were not for the checks which the
Lord sets upon us both in providence and in grace! The psalmist's
prayer is directed against the worst form of sin-that which is done
with deliberation and wilfulness. Even the holiest need to be "kept
back" from the vilest transgressions. It is a solemn thing to find the
apostle Paul warning saints against the most loathsome sins. "Mortify
therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication,
uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and
covetousness, which is idolatry." What! do saints want warning against
such sins as these? Yes, they do. The whitest robes, unless their
purity be preserved by divine grace, will be defiled by the blackest
spots. Experienced Christian, boast not in your experience; you will
trip yet if you look away from him who is able to keep you from
falling. Ye whose love is fervent, whose faith is constant, whose hopes
are bright, say not, "We shall never sin," but rather cry, "Lead us not
into temptation." There is enough tinder in the heart of the best of
men to light a fire that shall burn to the lowest hell, unless God
shall quench the sparks as they fall. Who would have dreamed that
righteous Lot could be found drunken, and committing uncleanness?
Hazael said, "Is thy servant a dog, that he should do this thing?" and
we are very apt to use the same self-righteous question. May infinite
wisdom cure us of the madness of self-confidence.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Master Assizes"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 16, 2009

THE MASTER ASSIZES

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:10
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+5:10&sr=1

Paul says that we must all, preacher and people alike, "appear before
the judgment seat of Christ." If you learn to live in the white light
of Christ here and now, judgment finally will cause you to delight in
the work of God in you. Keep yourself steadily faced by the judgment
seat of Christ; walk now in the light of the holiest you know. A
wrong temper of mind about another soul will end in the spirit of the
devil, no matter how saintly you are. One carnal judgment, and the
end of it is hell in you. Drag it to the light at once and say - "My
God, I have been guilty there." If you don't, hardness will come all
through. The penalty of sin is confirmation in sin. It is not only
God who punishes for sin; sin confirms itself in the sinner and gives
back full pay. No struggling nor praying will enable you to stop
doing some things, and the penalty of sin is that gradually you get
used to it and do not know that it is sin. No power save the incoming
of the Holy Ghost can alter the inherent consequences of sin.

"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light." Walking in the
light means for many of us walking according to our standard for
another person. The deadliest Pharisaism to-day is not hypocrisy, but
unconscious unreality.

Praying with Paul : "God's Simple Message"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S SIMPLE MESSAGE

1 Corinthians 2:1-5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+2:1-5

Dear Father, God of all true wisdom, power, and glory,

When I set about to share your Good News about Jesus with other
people, keep me from using lofty concepts or high-sounding words.
Let me speak of nothing except Christ and him crucified.

Help me to understand that it is okay for me to show my own
weakness, fear, and trembling. Let my words demonstrate your Spirit
and power, so that the faith which germinates will rest not in my
wisdom but in yours.

In the name of Jesus, by his authority, and according to his will
I lift up this petition to you. Amen.

"No person can serve two masters at the same time. He will
hate one master and love the other master. Or he will follow
one master and refuse to follow the other master. So you
cannot serve God and Money at the same time."

-- Matthew 6:24 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Who will I let rule my life? With whom will my ultimate allegiance lie?
When an ultimate choice has to be made, on what basis will it be made?
What am I pursuing most passionately with my use of time, talents, and
treasure? There is only one correct answer according to Jesus; that one
true answer is our Father in heaven. Giving our devotion to anything
else, or to anyone else, means that what we pursue on earth is destined
for decay, death, or destruction. In the strongest terms possible,
Jesus reminds us that money can't be our god if we want to serve the
Lord God Almighty. It's either our Father in heaven, or not. All our
energies should be channeled to honor him, or not.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Almighty God, I come before you in humility, acknowledging
your greatness and majesty. I want to live with you, and your Kingdom,
as my number one priority. Help awaken me to the things that I may
place in my heart that rival you as God. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

VERSE:
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all
of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with
Christ.
-- Galatians 3:26-27
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+3:26-27

THOUGHT:
We are children of God, with all the rights of full heirs! Our
faith, expressed in our baptism, declares to the world that we are
God's children. We have chosen to be clothed in Christ and his
righteousness and not depend on earning our own salvation. He is
our salvation and hope. He is our life and strength. He is our
older brother and Savior. He is our Lord.

PRAYER:
Thank you, dear Father, for adopting me into your family. How
can I thank you for all you have done to make me your child and a
rightful heir to your glorious riches of grace. Thank you, dear
Jesus, for your sacrifice that brought me into your family. In your
name, O Jesus, do I offer my prayer and my praise. Amen.
