Mustard Seed Thoughts: Man of Law 1

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Man of Law 1
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt--to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel. Deuteronomy 34:10 NIV

This week I want us to consider one question: What made Moses successful in the faith? What was it that allowed him the privilege of knowing God in such an intimate way? Some people look at Mosess life and see failure. He was a known murderer. He admitted his weakness as a leader. We also know he didnt get to enter into the Promise Land with the rest of the Israelites after their forty year wilderness experience.

But, was Moses a failure? To answer this question, examine todays verses. They tell us there was no prophet like Moses; that Moses knew God face to face; that through Gods strength, Moses did great miracles; and that no one has ever shown the mighty power of God that Moses displayed. We also know from the New Testament that when Jesus went with Peter, James and John to the Mountain of Transfiguration that Moses was there with Elijah, reflecting the glory of God. Some believe, and I tend to lean this direction, that one of the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation, who appear during the Last Days, is Moses. I would say Moses saw success in his walk with the Lord.

So, this week, how? What made Moses successful? As you and I reflect on that question, let me also encourage you to consider another question. What is making you a success in your Christian walk? Granted, we are all successful in Christ Jesus, because it is all about Him anyway, but how do you achieve greatness for the Lord, as Moses did?

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, have a little fun and go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Power to Risk, by Phil Ware

"I'm not sure we should do that. You know, I think it's better to be
safe than sorry."

Sounds like wise words for times like ours, doesn't it?

But, are they the Lord's words? Even more, are they even the Lord's
will?

Remember the story of the talents that Jesus told (Matthew 25:14-30)?
What did Jesus say about the person who chose the "better safe than
sorry" approach with the master's resources? The master's response
begins with these biting words, "You wicked and lazy servant!" (Matthew
25:26 TNIV). The response finishes with these words:

And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30).

Quite often, we teach that Jesus' story says that we should use the
"talents" that the Lord has given us. Clearly, this is a part of the
message, but it is not the primary message. The primary message is that
if we are picturing God as someone looking to condemn us for making a
mistake while trying to do the work of His Kingdom and play it safe so
we don't displease Him, then we've got the wrong idea. The person who
operates under this idea and ends up risking nothing, and doing little
or nothing, for the Master is the one who is condemned!

You see, when Jesus was raised from the dead, He showed Himself to His
followers (1 Corinthians 15:3-7) and then He called them to be His
witnesses to the lost world (Acts 1:8; cf. Matthew 28:18-20). The
Lord's resurrection and appearance to them, radically changed them!
Fearful men were made fearless. Broken people were made brave. Common
followers became committed. Private leaders went public. Doubting
family members became daring believers. When pushed into a corner and
warned to keep quiet by the same folks who orchestrated Jesus' death,
they responded with bold and risky passion:

Which is right in God's eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be
the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have
seen and heard (Acts 4:19-20).

The "better safe than sorry" approach to discipleship is out of place
with the kind of faith displayed in the book of Acts. This "avoid all
risks" approach to our faith is a mockery of what we see in God's
people through the ages, especially as it is shared with us in the
"Faith Hall of Fame" of the Bible (Hebrews 11:1-40).

I fear that part of the reason we have lost our passion to be the
Lord's witnesses to the world (Acts 1:8), is because we are afraid to
risk what we have and don't have to live by faith, prayer, and
dependence upon the power of the Lord. Even though the promise of God's
power is still there for us (Ephesians 1:18-20; Ephesians 3:16-21), we
don't pray for it and don't live like our Father longs to bless us with
it. The Holy Spirit that Jesus poured out at Pentecost is the same
Spirit poured out on all those who come to Him in faith and are
baptized (Titus 3:3-8). Even though the resurrected Jesus promised to
be with us as we risked ourselves finding and growing new disciples, we
hold back and miss His presence, remaining silent and similar to a
world lost without grace (Matthew 28:18-20).

Why?

Because it is easier to take the "better be safe than sorry" approach
to our lives of faith. "Most of us are not going to have to face what
the apostles faced, so how can I ever risk like they did? And if I
don't risk my life like they did, does that mean I am 'playing it
safe'?"

Are you sure you won't have to risk like they did? We have hundreds of
thousands of believers who face many of the same persecutions today
that they did in the early church. Every indication suggests that we
could be headed down a similar path in Western Culture, as well. But
even granting that we may not face such extreme risks as the early
church, what about facing the risks we have in the everyday world in
which we live? Think of some pretty clear ways we can take some risks
for the sake of the Kingdom and regain our sense of focus.

Give generously, especially to mission outreach and compassion
ministries in the face of economic crisis.

There are hundreds of ways to take risks that are crucial!

Get involved in the lives of our co-workers, neighbors, and the parents
of our kids' teammates to love them in the name of Jesus and provide an
open door for them to find Him.

Go on a mission or service trip to a different culture.

Take a few minutes after each TV show and see how the values measure up
to what God calls us to live: talk with our families about how we are
going to honor the Lord in our decisions, use of money, and moral
values.

Pray daily for our elders/pastors, ministers, missionaries, teachers,
and quiet servants of the Kingdom.

Respond to the person who says, "You know, if we do that, someone might
leave!" with the words, "And if we don't do this who will we never
reach?"

Protect someone's reputation when the gossip brigade turns their guns
on some new person in our office, school, or church.

There are hundreds of ways to take risks for the Master that are
crucial for us as God's people today in our world. (In fact, I'd really
like to get your input on what are some ways we can risk for the
Kingdom that are crucial for you. Please send your ideas on how you can
take risks for the Kingdom to phil@heartlight.org or share your ideas
on my blog, thephilfiles.com. Remember, these are not ideas for someone
else to do, but risks you believe you need to make for the Kingdom.)

Let's share a common commitment: the next time someone says, "You know,
I'd rather us be safe than sorry on this!" let's kindly and
respectfully, but firmly remind them what Jesus had to say. Then, let's
lead the way to sacrifice, pray, and risk for the Master and His
Kingdom.

Morning & Evening -- Hebrews 2:14 and 1 Samuel 18:17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, April 20, 2009

MORNING:

"That through death he might destroy him that had the power of
death."
-- Hebrews 2:14

O child of God, death hath lost its sting, because the devil's power
over it is destroyed. Then cease to fear dying. Ask grace from God the
Holy Ghost, that by an intimate knowledge and a firm belief of thy
Redeemer's death, thou mayst be strengthened for that dread hour.
Living near the cross of Calvary thou mayst think of death with
pleasure, and welcome it when it comes with intense delight. It is
sweet to die in the Lord: it is a covenant-blessing to sleep in Jesus.
Death is no longer banishment, it is a return from exile, a going home
to the many mansions where the loved ones already dwell. The distance
between glorified spirits in heaven and militant saints on earth seems
great; but it is not so. We are not far from home-a moment will bring
us there. The sail is spread; the soul is launched upon the deep. How
long will be its voyage? How many wearying winds must beat upon the
sail ere it shall be reefed in the port of peace? How long shall that
soul be tossed upon the waves before it comes to that sea which knows
no storm? Listen to the answer, "Absent from the body, present with the
Lord." Yon ship has just departed, but it is already at its haven. It
did but spread its sail and it was there. Like that ship of old, upon
the Lake of Galilee, a storm had tossed it, but Jesus said, "Peace, be
still," and immediately it came to land. Think not that a long period
intervenes between the instant of death and the eternity of glory. When
the eyes close on earth they open in heaven. The horses of fire are not
an instant on the road. Then, O child of God, what is there for thee to
fear in death, seeing that through the death of thy Lord its curse and
sting are destroyed? and now it is but a Jacob's ladder whose foot is
in the dark grave, but its top reaches to glory everlasting.

EVENING:

"Fight the Lord's battles."
-- 1 Samuel 18:17

The sacramental host of God's elect is warring still on earth, Jesus
Christ being the Captain of their salvation. He has said, "Lo! I am
with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Hark to the shouts of
war! Now let the people of God stand fast in their ranks, and let no
man's heart fail him. It is true that just now in England the battle is
turned against us, and unless the Lord Jesus shall lift his sword, we
know not what may become of the church of God in this land; but let us
be of good courage, and play the man. There never was a day when
Protestantism seemed to tremble more in the scales than now that a
fierce effort is making to restore the Romish antichrist to his ancient
seat. We greatly want a bold voice and a strong hand to preach and
publish the old gospel for which martyrs bled and confessors died. The
Saviour is, by his Spirit, still on earth; let this cheer us. He is
ever in the midst of the fight, and therefore the battle is not
doubtful. And as the conflict rages, what a sweet satisfaction it is to
know that the Lord Jesus, in his office as our great Intercessor, is
prevalently pleading for his people! O anxious gazer, look not so much
at the battle below, for there thou shalt be enshrouded in smoke, and
amazed with garments rolled in blood; but lift thine eyes yonder where
the Saviour lives and pleads, for while he intercedes, the cause of God
is safe. Let us fight as if it all depended upon us, but let us look up
and know that all depends upon him.

Now, by the lilies of Christian purity, and by the roses of the
Saviour's atonement, by the roes and by the hinds of the field, we
charge you who are lovers of Jesus, to do valiantly in the Holy War,
for truth and righteousness, for the kingdom and crown jewels of your
Master. Onward! "for the battle is not yours but God's."

My Utmost For His Highest : "Can A Saint Slander God?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 20, 2009

CAN A SAINT SLANDER GOD?

For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him
Amen.

2 Corinthians 1:20
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+1:20&sr=1

Jesus told the parable of the talents recorded in Matthew 25 as a
warning that it is possible for us to misjudge our capacity. This
parable has not to do with natural gifts, but with the Pentecostal
gift of the Holy Ghost. We must not measure our spiritual capacity by
education or by intellect; our capacity in spiritual things is
measured by the promises of God. If we get less than God wants us to
have, before long we will slander Him as the servant slandered his
master: "You expect more than You give me power to do; You demand too
much of me, I cannot stand true to You where I am placed." When it is
a question of God's Almighty Spirit, never say "I can't." Never let
the limitation of natural ability come in. If we have received the
Holy Spirit, God expects the work of the Holy Spirit to be manifested
in us.

The servant justified himself in everything he did and condemned his
lord on every point - "Your demand is out of all proportion to what
you give." Have we been slandering God by daring to worry when He has
said: "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and
all these things shall be added unto you"? Worrying means exactly
what this servant implied - "I know You mean to leave me in the
lurch." The person who is lazy naturally is always captious - "I
haven't had a decent chance," and the one who is lazy spiritually is
captious with God. Lazy people always strike out on an independent
line.

Never forget that our capacity in spiritual matters is measured by
the promises of God. Is God able to fulfil His promises? Our answer
depends on whether we have received the Holy Spirit.

Praying with Paul : "Observing the Lord's Supper"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

OBSERVING THE LORD'S SUPPER

1 Corinthians 11:17-23
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+11:17-23

Dear Father, giver of bread and wine,

When we come together as your family to partake of bread and wine,
let it truly be "the Lord's supper" which we eat. Let there be no
divisions or preferences among us, no putting ourselves first, or
putting our group first. Let there be no divisions between rich and
poor, young and old, dark-skinned or light, white collar or blue
collar. Let no one do anything that would humiliate another. For
"the Lord's supper" is a feast of love and unity.

Cause us to remember what was delivered to us by your apostles,
how the Lord Jesus on the night that he was betrayed took bread,
and having given thanks, broke it, and said, "This is my body which
is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

In the name of Jesus, who is the daily bread and wine of our
lives, I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- New Wine -- Matthew 9:16-17

New Wine

"When a person sews a patch over a hole on an old coat, he
never uses a piece of cloth that is not yet shrunk. If he
does, the patch will {shrink and} pull away from the coat.
Then the hole will be worse. Also, people never pour new wine
into old wine bags. Why? Because the old bags will break. The
wine will spill, and the wine bags will be ruined. But people
always pour new wine into new wine bags. Then the wine and
the wine bags will continue to be good."

-- Matthew 9:16-17 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
None of us likes to give up something familiar or comfortable. This is
even more true when this "something" has been the controlling point for
our view of reality, morality, and religion. So we have a tendency to
plug in something we like in a new experience or religion into our old
religious context and make it fit. Jesus' point here is that what he
brings cannot be made to fit in the old order and old forms of religion
with which they were familiar. No, to do that would be destructive to
both the old and the new. What Jesus brings is new, fresh, and
transformational. It will rip apart anything that tries to force it
into another way of doing, perceiving and experiencing. The Kingdom
Family is God's way of doing life, not just another religion to be
thrown into the world mix of faiths.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, you are the One and True God. I come to you today asking you to
strengthen my resolve and deepen my commitment to live according to
your will, revealed by Jesus. I confess to you that I find it easy to
rationalize away the bite in some of Jesus' words and simply combine
his teaching with what I already believe. Through your Spirit, I pray
that you will help me see your truth in Jesus, and not just my
prejudices. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 Corinthians 15:55

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 20, 2009

VERSE:
Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?
-- 1 Corinthians 15:55
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:55

THOUGHT:
Death has the power to end life. Death has the power to
separate. Death has the power to discourage and defeat us. But, we
know the truth: Jesus lives! Because he lives, we know we will live
with him. We believe that his victory over death is our victory. So
like Jesus, we mock death and its power to destroy us. Jesus has
destroyed death and brought immortality to life ... in us through
the Gospel.

PRAYER:
Father, I confess that the death of those I love still hurts me.
I thank you that my separation from them will only be for a short
time. I thank you that death doesn't separate me for long from
those whom I love and who love you. Thank you for giving me the
victory in Jesus. Thank you, Jesus, for defeating death. In your
precious and triumphant name, Jesus Christ the Lord, I pray. Amen.
