Today's Verse : John 12:24

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 24, 2008

VERSE:
I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the
ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it
produces many seeds.
-- John 12:24
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+12:24

THOUGHT:
Jesus announced this truth, recognizing that God was calling him
to lay down his life so his followers could join him in glory.
Sacrifice is never easy, but despite his disciples' lack of courage
and faithfulness during his last hours, Jesus truly believed that
his sacrifice would bring the best out in them, and then also lead
them to share his grace and glory with many others. (It should do
the same for us!) The very fact that we are thinking of Jesus today
is proof that he was correct about his powerful impact on them and
others that came after them.

PRAYER:
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for all that you did to ransom me from
sin and death. Thank you for leaving heaven and living here among
us. Thank you for being a person of compassion and character. Thank
you for loving your own even though they abandoned you. Thank you
for enduring the cross and entering death for me. I look forward to
seeing you when you return with glory in the company of the angels.
To you be all honor, glory, power, love, and praise. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Immanuel Two

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Immanuel Two
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.

Exodus 34:29-30 NIV

Imagine being so close to God that people could tell it by the look on your face and they are afraid to come near you! When Moses left God's presence, people could tell. He had God's glory written all over him. It put the fear of God into more than a few people.

Isn't that the way we are supposed to be? Aren't you and I, the children of God, supposed to be in a committed, vibrant relationship with the Living God, that it shapes our character, who we are and who others see us to be? Shouldn't the experience of being near us "shake up" those around us who need a fresh touch from God?

I once had the awesome experience of meeting T. W. Hunt. Mr. Hunt d oes not have a household name perhaps, but before I met him, I had heard repeatedly that when you are in his presence, you feel as if you are literally in the presence of Christ. Mr. Hunt has written a couple of books I have read. One, "The Doctrine of Prayer", helped focus my prayer life. The other, "The Mind of Christ", gave me tremendous insight into which Christ was molding me to be.

When I met T. W. Hunt, I had to agree. He is a humble, Godly man who personifies Christ like no one else I have ever met. You can tell he has come near to God. I found myself challenged in my own walk with Christ being near Dr. Hunt.

Dear friend, are you working on the spiritual part of your life? Is your physical presence that others see becoming more and more like Christ? Do you feel more like Him today than you did last year this time? More importantly, would those closest to you say you are acting, looking and sounding like Christ?

As we call upon God to come ne ar to us, as we remember how He came near to us at Christmas time, may we strive more than ever to come near to Him? We will be changed, and others will notice!

|------------------------------------------------------------|

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

What Christmas Teaches, by Rubel Shelly

There is a wonderful line from the American scholar Stephen L. Carter
that is appropriate to the Christmas season: "Religion is, at its
heart, a way of denying the rest of the world." He is surely, astutely,
and gloriously correct.

Faith's view of this world is strangely skeptical. No, more than that.
It is a posture of unequivocal distrust leading to rejection! When the
world recites its mantras -- you matter only if you are beautiful, the
most important thing is money, winning is everything, Look Out for
Number One -- faith protests them all. It adopts a posture of doubt and
incredulity. It lives in skepticism and disbelief.

I refuse to believe that selfishness is acceptable or that it is
permissible to resent another's good fortune. I will not swallow the
world's way of thinking in order to justify prejudice, aggression, and
hatred. No believer can be anything but incredulous about the claim of
this world that she is entitled to anything she can get her hands on or
that he should feel no guilt in exploiting others.

So distrust the alleged certainties of sense that cancel the mysteries
of faith. Dispute the tendency of the masses to look forward only for
the sake of declaring the impossibility of living with hope. Deny
altogether the inevitability of such greed, hatred, and violence that
we cannot prove the reality of love.

So let Christmas deny the hold of this world on your heart.

The Bible warns against being blinded by this world and speaks of the
danger of the blind leading the blind. That warning puts us on notice
that things, people, and ways of thinking totally rooted in the finite
world of time, space, and matter will keep us from discovering,
experiencing, and delighting in the greater realities of God, spirit,
and eternity that can only be known by faith.

Faith isn't self-deception. It is neither wish projection nor wishful
thinking. It is our willingness to hear and stand with the things God
has shown us through events and people as awe-inspiring as a trembling,
smoking mountain in the desert and as modest as a baby's first cry in
the village of Bethlehem.

So let Christmas deny the hold of this world on your heart. Let it open
your eyes to what the willfully blind will never see, your ears to
things the incorrigibly deaf can never hear. See Immanuel -- and know
God is with us. Hear the song of angels -- and receive God's peace
given to anxious hearts. Hold the confusion, cynicism, and antagonisms
of this troubled world suspect -- and choose God's reign as your way of
affirming the true realities. Merry Christmas to all!

Morning & Evening -- Luke 14:10 and Psalms 74:16

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, December 23, 2008

MORNING:

"Friend, go up higher."
-- Luke 14:10

When first the life of grace begins in the soul, we do indeed draw near
to God, but it is with great fear and trembling. The soul conscious of
guilt, and humbled thereby, is overawed with the solemnity of its
position; it is cast to the earth by a sense of the grandeur of
Jehovah, in whose presence it stands. With unfeigned bashfulness it
takes the lowest room.

But, in after life, as the Christian grows in grace, although he will
never forget the solemnity of his position, and will never lose that
holy awe which must encompass a gracious man when he is in the presence
of the God who can create or can destroy; yet his fear has all its
terror taken out of it; it becomes a holy reverence, and no more an
overshadowing dread. He is called up higher, to greater access to God
in Christ Jesus. Then the man of God, walking amid the splendours of
Deity, and veiling his face like the glorious cherubim, with those twin
wings, the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ, will, reverent and
bowed in spirit, approach the throne; and seeing there a God of love,
of goodness, and of mercy, he will realize rather the covenant
character of God than his absolute Deity. He will see in God rather his
goodness than his greatness, and more of his love than of his majesty.
Then will the soul, bowing still as humbly as aforetime, enjoy a more
sacred liberty of intercession; for while prostrate before the glory of
the Infinite God, it will be sustained by the refreshing consciousness
of being in the presence of boundless mercy and infinite love, and by
the realization of acceptance "in the Beloved." Thus the believer is
bidden to come up higher, and is enabled to exercise the privilege of
rejoicing in God, and drawing near to him in holy confidence, saying,
"Abba, Father."

"So may we go from strength to strength,
And daily grow in grace,
Till in thine image raised at length,
We see thee face to face."

EVENING:

"The night also is thine."
-- Psalms 74:16

Yes, Lord, thou dost not abdicate thy throne when the sun goeth down,
nor dost thou leave the world all through these long wintry nights to
be the prey of evil; thine eyes watch us as the stars, and thine arms
surround us as the zodiac belts the sky. The dews of kindly sleep and
all the influences of the moon are in thy hand, and the alarms and
solemnities of night are equally with thee. This is very sweet to me
when watching through the midnight hours, or tossing to and fro in
anguish. There are precious fruits put forth by the moon as well as by
the sun: may my Lord make me to be a favoured partaker in them.

The night of affliction is as much under the arrangement and control of
the Lord of Love as the bright summer days when all is bliss. Jesus is
in the tempest. His love wraps the night about itself as a mantle, but
to the eye of faith the sable robe is scarce a disguise. From the first
watch of the night even unto the break of day the eternal Watcher
observes his saints, and overrules the shades and dews of midnight for
his people's highest good. We believe in no rival deities of good and
evil contending for the mastery, but we hear the voice of Jehovah
saying, "I create light and I create darkness; I, the Lord, do all
these things."

Gloomy seasons of religious indifference and social sin are not
exempted from the divine purpose. When the altars of truth are defiled,
and the ways of God forsaken, the Lord's servants weep with bitter
sorrow, but they may not despair, for the darkest eras are governed by
the Lord, and shall come to their end at his bidding. What may seem
defeat to us may be victory to him.

"Though enwrapt in gloomy night,
We perceive no ray of light;
Since the Lord himself is here,
'Tis not meet that we should fear."

My Utmost For His Highest : "How Can I Personally Partake In The Atonement?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 23, 2008

HOW CAN I PERSONALLY PARTAKE IN THE ATONEMENT?

But God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of
Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 6:14
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ga+6:14&sr=1

The Gospel of Jesus Christ always forces an issue of will. Do I
accept God's verdict on sin in the Cross of Christ? Have I the
slightest interest in the death of Jesus? Do I want to be identified
with His death, to be killed right out to all interest in sin, in
worldliness, in self - to be so identified with Jesus that I am
spoilt for every thing else but Him? The great privilege of
discipleship is that I can sign on under His Cross, and that means
death to sin. Get alone with Jesus and either tell Him that you do
not want sin to die out in you; or else tell Him that at all costs
you want to be identified with His death. Immediately you transact in
confident faith in what Our Lord did on the Cross, a supernatural
identification with His death takes place, and you will know with a
knowledge that passeth knowledge that your "old man" is crucified
with Christ. The proof that your old man is crucified with Christ is
the amazing ease with which the life of God in you enables you to
obey the voice of Jesus Christ.

Every now and again, Our Lord lets us see what we would be like if it
were not for Himself; it is a justification of what He said -
"Without Me ye can do nothing." That is why the bedrock of
Christianity is personal, passionate devotion to the Lord Jesus. We
mistake the ecstasy of our first introduction into the Kingdom for
the purpose of God in getting us there; His purpose in getting us
there is that we may realize all that identification with Jesus
Christ means.

Dear Father,

Grant that we may clothe ourselves with Christ, for he is a
garment of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness and patience,
forbearance and forgiveness.

Above all, clothe us with his love, which will bind us together in
perfect harmony.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Settling in on Death's Necessities -- Mark 16:1

Settling in on Death's Necessities

The next day after the Sabbath day, Mary from Magdala,
Salome, and Mary the mother of James bought some
sweet-smelling spices. They wanted to put the spices on
Jesus' body.

-- Mark 16:1 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Death brings with it harsh realities. The physical absence of the
person who died and the decay of the physical body are two of the
harshest. The women are doing what was expected and what was necessary
when a loved one in Jesus' day died. They show their honor and respect
by preparing the dead body properly. When people we love die, there are
necessities that have to be handled. As difficult as these are, they
help reinforce that this person is gone from us. Our emotions settle in
on the absence of that person and all that it means. The toughest
reality about grief is that the only way past it is to go through it.
Though not ready to give up Jesus to death, these women do what is
necessary -- both for the dead body and for their aching spirits -- by
taking care of the body properly.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, to lose a loved one is so terribly difficult. Especially true
for those who have lost loved ones to death during this time of year,
please give your blessings and sustaining grace through this time. Help
us to take comfort and find hope that victory and reunion await those
who belong to Christ. Give them strength and courage to hold on to that
hope -- a hope that is ours because your Son came to earth as one of
us, died as one of us, and was raised as the first of us to permanently
defeat death. For this victory, I thank you. In Jesus' mighty name I
pray. Amen.
