Today's Verse : 1 John 1:7

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 7, 2008

VERSE:
If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin.
-- 1 John 1:7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+1:7

THOUGHT:
As we draw near to the Lord and live for him, two amazing
blessings come our way. First, we find that our sins are forgiven
and we're cleansed of those sins thanks to the loving sacrifice of
Jesus. Second, we find that we are not alone in this wonderful
cleansing. True fellowship among believers is built when folks
seeking the Lord find each other in his presence. This fellowship
isn't forced or contrived, just heavenly.

PRAYER:
Almighty and holy God, I want to honor Jesus' sacrificial death
by living a life that is pure, honorable, and holy. Thank you for
providing my cleansing through Jesus' blood and leading me to
others who live for you. Please intensify my hunger to know you,
your Son, and other believers more. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Marking Time, by Russ Lawson

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,
making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is
(Ephesians 5:15-16 TNIV).

Our world is concerned with -- almost obsessed with -- time. Days,
hours, minutes and even seconds are watched, counted and accounted for
in our modern world. Calendars are an important part of our lives also
in our modern world. We keep track of days, special days, holidays,
birthdays, anniversaries, work days and weekends. I wonder however, how
really important it will all prove to have been in the end?

As we are still in the beginning of new year, I wonder how important
the marking of this period of time is in the vast scheme of the
universe. When my wife and I lived in Africa we had to learn how to
look at time differently. We had to learn again that people were more
important than time! We knew this, but our 21st century American time
management, work ethic, says that time -- almost always -- is more
important than people.

We can try to deny it, but stop and think about all of the schedules to
which you adhere. This past Sunday evening, we were in our
congregation's gathering for our regular evening worship and study
period. We begin at 6 p.m. and at 6:07 no one had gotten up front to
begin the meeting. People shifted uncomfortably, coughed, cleared their
throats, and looked around to see what was holding things up. You see,
someone was supposed to do something and nothing was happening.

When we lived in Africa, the church meeting would not begin until every
member they were expecting arrived. Some of the folks might walk 10
miles to get to the meeting, and they sure didn't want them to miss
anything just because we were trying to keep a time schedule. So we
often would drink another cup of tea and visit a little longer, maybe
discuss bible questions someone might have, but no one got upset
because things didn't start on time.

His people are more important than anything else.

We became so disengaged from the clock and calendar that we often
really didn't realize what period of the month it was. American
holidays could come and go, and we were unaware of them unless reminded
by someone. Our time revolved around Sunday as the Lord's Day, and we
worked all of our other commitments around that priority. This was one
of the hardest lessons for us to learn on our arrival to Africa, but it
didn't take too long because it was the common practice with those we
lived with daily. We have had a difficult time readjusting to the
American Culture whose values are completely different when it comes to
time.

I would suggest that just perhaps we need to stop and evaluate how
important time is to us versus how important the people are that we
come into contact with in our lives. People are always more important
than marking time.

The Scripture is full of stories about people and time, just notice a
few. There is the story of Paul making a point to be in Troas on a
Sunday waiting for a week, just to partake of the Lord's Supper with
the church there (Acts 20:6-7). Perhaps you remember a story relating
long winded preachers, speaking until midnight found in (Acts 20:8). Or
perhaps, you remember the story of a church rejoicing after midnight,
because one of their members had been restored to life (Acts 20:10-12).
And, of course, there is the most important story of the Savior who
waited three days to rise from the grave, crushed the power of Satan,
and gave us eternal life! (Acts 10:38-40)

All of these stories tell us that God, his commandments, and his people
are more important than anything else in the universe. So, the next
time you start to get nervous because things are not going according to
"your" schedule, remember that in the long run, it's not all that
important. God and others are more important than anything else.

Morning & Evening -- 1 Peter 5:7 and Ezekiel 33:22

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, January 6, 2008

MORNING:

"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."
-- 1 Peter 5:7

It is a happy way of soothing sorrow when we can feel-"HE careth for
me." Christian! do not dishonour religion by always wearing a brow of
care; come, cast your burden upon your Lord. You are staggering beneath
a weight which your Father would not feel. What seems to you a crushing
burden, would be to him but as the small dust of the balance. Nothing
is so sweet as to

"Lie passive in God's hands,
And know no will but his."

O child of suffering, be thou patient; God has not passed thee over in
his providence. He who is the feeder of sparrows, will also furnish you
with what you need. Sit not down in despair; hope on, hope ever. Take
up the arms of faith against a sea of trouble, and your opposition
shall yet end your distresses. There is One who careth for you. His eye
is fixed on you, his heart beats with pity for your woe, and his hand
omnipotent shall yet bring you the needed help. The darkest cloud shall
scatter itself in showers of mercy. The blackest gloom shall give place
to the morning. He, if thou art one of his family, will bind up thy
wounds, and heal thy broken heart. Doubt not his grace because of thy
tribulation, but believe that he loveth thee as much in seasons of
trouble as in times of happiness. What a serene and quiet life might
you lead if you would leave providing to the God of providence! With a
little oil in the cruse, and a handful of meal in the barrel, Elijah
outlived the famine, and you will do the same. If God cares for you,
why need you care too? Can you trust him for your soul, and not for
your body? He has never refused to bear your burdens, he has never
fainted under their weight. Come, then, soul! have done with fretful
care, and leave all thy concerns in the hand of a gracious God.

EVENING:

"Now the hand of the Lord was upon me in the evening."
-- Ezekiel 33:22

In the way of judgment this may be the case, and, if so, be it mine to
consider the reason of such a visitation, and bear the rod and him that
hath appointed it. I am not the only one who is chastened in the night
season; let me cheerfully submit to the affliction, and carefully
endeavour to be profited thereby. But the hand of the Lord may also be
felt in another manner, strengthening the soul and lifting the spirit
upward towards eternal things. O that I may in this sense feel the Lord
dealing with me! A sense of the divine presence and indwelling bears
the soul towards heaven as upon the wings of eagles. At such times we
are full to the brim with spiritual joy, and forget the cares and
sorrows of earth; the invisible is near, and the visible loses its
power over us; servant-body waits at the foot of the hill, and the
master-spirit worships upon the summit in the presence of the Lord. O
that a hallowed season of divine communion may be vouchsafed to me this
evening! The Lord knows that I need it very greatly. My graces
languish, my corruptions rage, my faith is weak, my devotion is cold;
all these are reasons why his healing hand should be laid upon me. His
hand can cool the heat of my burning brow, and stay the tumult of my
palpitating heart. That glorious right hand which moulded the world can
new-create my mind; the unwearied hand which bears the earth's huge
pillars up can sustain my spirit; the loving hand which incloses all
the saints can cherish me; and the mighty hand which breaketh in pieces
the enemy can subdue my sins. Why should I not feel that hand touching
me this evening? Come, my soul, address thy God with the potent plea,
that Jesus' hands were pierced for thy redemption, and thou shalt
surely feel that same hand upon thee which once touched Daniel and set
him upon his knees that he might see visions of God.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Worship"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 6, 2008

WORSHIP

And he pitched his tent having Bethel on the west and Ai
on the east: and there he builded an altar.

Genesis 12:8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ge+12:8&sr=1

Worship is giving God the best that He has given you. Be careful what
you do with the best you have. Whenever you get a blessing from God,
give it back to Him as a love gift. Take time to meditate before God
and offer the blessing back to Him in a deliberate act of worship. If
you hoard a thing for yourself, it will turn into spiritual dry rot,
as the manna did when it was hoarded. God will never let you hold a
spiritual thing for your self, it has to be given back to Him that He
may make it a blessing to others.

Bethel is the symbol of communion with God; Ai is the symbol of the
world. Abraham pitched his tent between the two. The measure of the
worth of our public activity for God is the private profound
communion we have with Him. Rush is wrong every time, there is always
plenty of time to worship God. Quiet days with God may be a snare. We
have to pitch our tents where we shall always have quiet times with
God, however noisy our times with the world may be. There are not
three stages in spiritual life - worship, waiting and work. Some of
us go in jumps like spiritual frogs, we jump from worship to waiting,
and from waiting to work. God's idea is that the three should go
together. They were always together in the life of Our Lord. He was
unhasting and unresting. It is a discipline, we cannot get into it
all at once.

Praying with Paul : "Men's Dishonor"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

MEN'S DISHONOR

Romans 1:24-25

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:24-25

Dear Father, to whom all honor and glory is due,

How sad that some would choose to dishonor themselves rather than
to honor you. When they do so, you give them up to their own
dishonorable passions. Women exchange natural relationships for
unnatural. The men likewise give up natural relations with women
and are consumed with lust for each other. Men commit shameless
acts with other men and receive in their own persons the due
penalty of their error.

Today, Lord, it seems to be getting worse. Men and women exalt
their own selves to godhood while practicing blatant homosexuality.
Instead of repenting, they demand the right to impugn you, and they
will not admit that they are responsible for the diseases you have
put upon them.

May I always acknowledge that you are the creator of life and love
and that only when I act in accordance with your design will I find
satisfaction.

In Christ's name. Amen.

The Holy Spirit

[John the baptist said] "I baptize you with water. But that
person who is coming will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

-- Mark 1:8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus has the power and authority to send the Spirit and make us new.
John could talk about the Holy Spirit and operate by the power and
inspiration of the Holy Spirit, as well as promise the coming of the
Holy Spirit. However, he could not baptize in the Holy Spirit. It
wasn't part of his baptism. Only Jesus can make us new by the power of
the Holy Spirit. We each one need to seriously consider whether we have
let him make us truly new.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, thank you for the gift and power of the Holy Spirit
that is at work in your children. Thank you for sending this Spirit
into our lives, Lord Jesus. Holy Spirit, I pray that you will mold me
and make me into the person I need to be to properly share the grace of
God with others. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
