Today's Verse : Psalm 1:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 27, 2009

VERSE:
He [the one who delights in and meditates upon the Law of the
Lord] is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its
fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does
prospers.

-- Psalm 1:3
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+1:3

THOUGHT:
Some kinds of earthly delight can feed our hearts for a short
time. However, when difficulties come, our hearts will wither in
the drought of their false nourishment. On the other hand,
delighting in the LORD and in his will for us provides us with
ongoing and ever-fresh joy. Out of this God-seeking lifestyle come
both short-term and long-term benefits as well as a resiliency that
withstands life's worst droughts.

PRAYER:
Dear God, the Holy One of heaven, I do find my delight in you
and your ways. I find my refreshment in your abiding Spirit. Please
give me the wisdom to seek your will every day of my life. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Special Blessing

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Special Blessing
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness. James 3:18 NIV

Here's a challenge for all of us today: today and over the next week, let's do something good for someone in the name of Jesus!

Mow a neighbor's lawn, even when yours still needs mowing. Bake your favorite pie and give it away. Treat your Pastor to lunch. Call an old friend you haven't heard from in a while.

Visit a nursing home to spend time with people you don't even know. Pick up trash on the streets. Plant a flower. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Hug a child.

Let's all try to make a special effort, over the next couple of days, to really be a blessing in someone's life. Tell somebody that Jesus loves them. Donate that extra Bible on your shelf to the hospital.

God's love is being dispersed through His people. We can be Jesus to a lost and dying world just by spreading a little peace. The beauty of it will come as we watch it sprout and grow.

Peace planted, always produces more peace! Let's try it!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Welcome One Another, by Phil Ware

At eight o'clock on that Sunday morning, I was sitting at a picnic
table off an alley in Bangkok, Thailand. I was waiting for them to
bring me breakfast that they were preparing in a couple of woks on open
flames. I was sitting with my friend Robert catching up on things since
I hadn't seen him for several months.

Our breakfast was chicken and hot peppers, served over stir-fried rice
and eggs, and washed down with two bottles of orange crush. Yowzer! It
was the breakfast I needed to wake me up and get me going after very
little sleep in three days of travel from Texas to Thailand and
ministry all day Saturday with Thai students. I would not have wanted
to miss any of the Sunday experience that was about to unfold.

During the worship gathering, they introduced their guests. This took a
long time in a gathering of three hundred or so. Our group of 13 were
amazed that there were people from 13 different countries visiting that
assembly on that day. Quite an international moment for just a "normal"
summer Sunday. The presence of the Lord felt quite real and the book of
Acts was no longer theory, but experience, as we sang two songs
together with each language group singing the song in their own
language. What a glorious anticipation of heaven's worship (Revelation
7:9-12)!

Maybe most surprising of all, we felt at home with these people. They
welcomed us warmly. Many tried to speak English with us. We went to
lunch with a big group at a nearby restaurant and shared the collision
of cultures and languages with laughter and joy. After lunch, we played
basketball and kicked around soccer ball. The connection to each other
through Jesus and the Holy Spirit helped us experience the truth of
Jesus' Great Commission and the Father's desire to bring all his
children together in Jesus.

The apostle Paul said it this way:

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same
attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that
with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ
accepted you, in order to bring praise to God (Romans 15:5-7).

Accepting one another -- "welcome one another" as other translations
read -- is at the heart of who we are as a people. Jesus has brought us
in and made us family out his generous love and grace (Romans 5:6-11).
Now we are asked to do the same with others. What a glorious blessing
to have experienced this principle and to feel the reality of Jesus'
promise to be present when his followers are together (Matthew 18:20).

Shortly before we left late that afternoon to board the train from
Bangkok to Chiang Mai, I slipped into the sanctuary to watch several
Thai people being baptized into Christ. I knew that this would cost
some of them their relationship with their families and others might
possibly lose their jobs. I couldn't understand what was being said
until one of my new Thai friends slid in beside me and translated. To
this day, I can still remember a young man taking off an amulet that he
had bought for a large sum of money. This charm was purchased to "make
merit" and to give him good karma. He laid the good luck charm on the
side of the baptistery and said, "I paid a lot of money for this and I
trusted that it would bring me good luck. I renounce that old life now
and trust in Jesus." He was baptized into Christ. He was now my brother
and I felt a deep connection to him. And suddenly, I knew what the
apostle Paul said so many years before was true:

You were all baptized into Christ, and so you were all clothed with
Christ. This means that you are all children of God through faith
in Christ Jesus. In Christ, there is no difference between Jew and
Greek, slave and free person, male and female. You are all the same
in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26-28 NCV).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What keeps us from having "the same mind" and being of "one heart" and
glorifying God together with "one voice" (Romans 15:5-11)?

I felt a deep connection to him!

Paul describes how we were welcomed by Christ (Romans 5:5-11). What
does that mean for the ways we are to welcome others (Romans 15:5-11)?

Paul speaks strongly to his Christian friends in Philippi about "the
same mind" and points us to having the "mind of Christ" (Philippians
2:1-11). This passage goes with others mentioned above (Romans 15:5-11
& Galatians 3:26-28) and will help you answer the personal questions
below:

What do you need to do to more deeply value and welcome brothers and
sisters in Christ who are different from you?

What keeps you from reaching and welcoming others into the body of
believers?

What barriers do we often let get in our way that keep us from more
openly welcoming those who are different from us?

I'd love to hear your insight and answers and hope you will leave a
response on my blog:

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 6:26 and Luke 2:18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, January 26, 2009

MORNING:

"Your heavenly Father."
-- Matthew 6:26

God's people are doubly his children, they are his offspring by
creation, and they are his sons by adoption in Christ. Hence they are
privileged to call him, "Our Father which art in heaven." Father! Oh,
what precious word is that. Here is authority: "If I be a Father, where
is mine honour?" If ye be sons, where is your obedience? Here is
affection mingled with authority; an authority which does not provoke
rebellion; an obedience demanded which is most cheerfully
rendered-which would not be withheld even if it might. The obedience
which God's children yield to him must be loving obedience. Do not go
about the service of God as slaves to their taskmaster's toil, but run
in the way of his commands because it is your Father's way. Yield your
bodies as instruments of righteousness, because righteousness is your
Father's will, and his will should be the will of his child.
Father!-Here is a kingly attribute so sweetly veiled in love, that the
King's crown is forgotten in the King's face, and his sceptre becomes,
not a rod of iron, but a silver sceptre of mercy-the sceptre indeed
seems to be forgotten in the tender hand of him who wields it.
Father!-Here is honour and love. How great is a Father's love to his
children! That which friendship cannot do, and mere benevolence will
not attempt, a father's heart and hand must do for his sons. They are
his offspring, he must bless them; they are his children, he must show
himself strong in their defence. If an earthly father watches over his
children with unceasing love and care, how much more does our heavenly
Father? Abba, Father! He who can say this, hath uttered better music
than cherubim or seraphim can reach. There is heaven in the depth of
that word-Father! There is all I can ask; all my necessities can
demand; all my wishes can desire. I have all in all to all eternity
when I can say, "Father."

EVENING:

"All they that heard it wondered at those things."
-- Luke 2:18

We must not cease to wonder at the great marvels of our God. It would
be very difficult to draw a line between holy wonder and real worship;
for when the soul is overwhelmed with the majesty of God's glory,
though it may not express itself in song, or even utter its voice with
bowed head in humble prayer, yet it silently adores. Our incarnate God
is to be worshipped as "the Wonderful." That God should consider his
fallen creature, man, and instead of sweeping him away with the besom
of destruction, should himself undertake to be man's Redeemer, and to
pay his ransom price, is, indeed marvellous! But to each believer
redemption is most marvellous as he views it in relation to himself. It
is a miracle of grace indeed, that Jesus should forsake the thrones and
royalties above, to suffer ignominiously below for you. Let your soul
lose itself in wonder, for wonder is in this way a very practical
emotion. Holy wonder will lead you to grateful worship and heartfelt
thanksgiving. It will cause within you godly watchfulness; you will be
afraid to sin against such a love as this. Feeling the presence of the
mighty God in the gift of his dear Son, you will put off your shoes
from off your feet, because the place whereon you stand is holy ground.
You will be moved at the same time to glorious hope. If Jesus has done
such marvellous things on your behalf, you will feel that heaven itself
is not too great for your expectation. Who can be astonished at
anything, when he has once been astonished at the manger and the cross?
What is there wonderful left after one has seen the Saviour? Dear
reader, it may be that from the quietness and solitariness of your
life, you are scarcely able to imitate the shepherds of Bethlehem, who
told what they had seen and heard, but you can, at least, fill up the
circle of the worshippers before the throne, by wondering at what God
has done.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Look Again And Consecrate"

LOOK AGAIN AND CONSECRATE

If God so clothe the grass of the field ... shall He not
much more clothe you?

Matthew 6:30
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+6:30&sr=1

A simple statement of Jesus is always a puzzle to us if we are not
simple. How are we going to be simple with the simplicity of Jesus?
By receiving His Spirit, recognizing and relying on Him, obeying Him
as He brings the word of God, and life will become amazingly simple.
"Consider," says Jesus, "how much more your Father Who clothes the
grass of the field will clothe you, if you keep your relationship
right with Him." Every time we have gone back in spiritual communion
it has been because we have impertinently known better than Jesus
Christ. We have allowed the cares of the world to come in, and have
forgotten the "much more" of our Heavenly Father.

"Behold the fowls of the air" - their main aim is to obey the
principle of life that is in them and God looks after them. Jesus
says that if you are rightly related to Him and obey His Spirit that
is in you, God will look after your 'feathers.'

"Consider the lilies of the field" - they grow where they are put.
Many of us refuse to grow where we are put, consequently we take root
nowhere. Jesus says that if we obey the life God has given us, He
will look after all the other things. Has Jesus Christ told us a lie?
If we are not experiencing the "much more," it is because we are not
obeying the life God has given us, we are taken up with confusing
considerations. How much time have we taken up worrying God with
questions when we should have been absolutely free to concentrate on
His work? Consecration means the continual separating of myself to
one particular thing. We cannot consecrate once and for all. Am I
continually separating myself to consider God every day of my life?

Praying with Paul : "A Slave to Righteousness"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

A SLAVE TO RIGHTEOUSNESS

Romans 6:12-18
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+6:12-18

Dear Father, Master of my life,

Help me to yield myself to you as one who has been brought from
death to life. Help me yield my members to you as instruments of
righteousness.

Let not sin reign in my body, making me obey its passions. Let sin
have no dominion over me, since I am not under law but grace.

I praise you, God, that whereas I was once a slave of sin, I
became obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which
I have committed. Thank you for setting me free from sin that I
might become a slave of righteousness.

In the name of Jesus I thank you for your wonderful grace and all
your gifts. Amen.

WJD! -- True Bread, True Word -- Matthew 4:2-4

True Bread, True Word

Jesus ate nothing for 40 days and nights. After this, he was
very hungry. The devil came to Jesus to tempt him. The devil
said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become
bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written {in the
Scriptures}, 'It is not just bread that keeps people alive.
People's lives depend on what God says.'"

-- Matthew 4:2-4 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Just as Israel faced the battle of temptation in the desert, Jesus
does, too. But unlike Israel which always seemed to get hung up on
physical needs rather than following God, Jesus chose to honor and
focus on the Father rather than himself. Nowhere is this seen more
clearly than in the two great temptation crises of his ministry: his
temptations here and in the Garden shortly before his death. In both
situations, and all the others in between, Jesus chose God's will and
God's glory over his own needs and desires. God's word, God's will, was
what Jesus fed on more than physical food. He is our example that we
should not try to live a day without our spiritual food or our souls
will be hungrier than our bellies on a 40 day fast!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, God, who fills every empty place and fulfills every need,
stir me to a holy hunger for your Word and an insatiable appetite to do
your will. I confess that I find it so hard to keep my mind off the
distractions my undisciplined appetite craves, so please help me learn
that my only lasting answer to true hunger is with you. Through the
grace of Jesus' intercession I pray. Amen.
