Today's Verse : Numbers 6:24-26

February 25, 2009

VERSE:
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine
upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace.
-- Numbers 6:24-26
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Numbers+6:24-26

THOUGHT:
How would you like to place the mighty name of the LORD on
people you love? God promised that this priestly blessing in
today's Scripture enabled his name (his power and authority) to be
placed on his people. What an incredible gift that we have the
power to give to others with just our faithful words! Blessings are
found all throughout Scripture. Why not begin looking today for
ways to pronounce God's blessing on others? You can start with this
one, and then add a bunch of others as you find them in Scripture.

PRAYER:
O LORD of every good and perfect gift, your blessings are too
many to count and too wonderful to fully comprehend. Please use me
to share those blessings with others. Give me eyes to see and ears
to hear so that I can share your blessings with others today and
each day! In the name of Jesus, your greatest blessing, I pray.
Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: What Is Good

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
What Is Good
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NIV

Prior to this verse, the prophet Micah had just asked a series of rhetorical questions, each seeking the same response to the question: what can you give God? What can you give to the one who has it all? (What an appropriate and well-known question following the Christmas season!) What can you give to the one who created the Heavens and the Earth? What can you give to the giver of all good things?

My friend, you can give God nothing He can't create for Himself, but God has made out for you His wish list. And what is it that the Lord requires? First, act justly. Do what is right! Follow the Ten Commandments as your guide. Read His word and discover His desire for your life. Learn the commands of Jesus: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbor as yours elf. Be fair to your fellow man. Be a man or woman of integrity.

Second, love mercy. Love the mercy that God has given you (you know without His mercy you would be doomed to Hell), and love to give mercy. No doubt you will be wronged many times this year; in the supermarket, at the red light, in the workplace, in your home, and even in the church. Forgive others just as you, yourself, have been forgiven. Give mercy to the degree that it has been given to you, and believe me, that is a lot of mercy!

Finally, walk humbly with your God. To do this, He must first BE YOUR God. Is He? Then you must, by faith, seek forgiveness of your sins so that He will become your strolling companion. If you will look at Genesis 3:8, God had a habit of walking with Adam and Eve. Sin separated them from that immediate, close relationship with the Father. Jesus made a way to restore that relationship at the cross. Humble yourself today and allow Him to walk with you again!

He has told you what is good.

Are you listening?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Sawdust and Two-by-Fours, by Patrick D. Odum

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in someone else's eye and
pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say,
"Let me take the speck out of your eye," when all the time there is
a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of
your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck
from the other person's eye (Matthew 7:3-5 TNIV).

Firefighters at a fire station in Nagoya City, Japan, are a little
embarrassed this week. Seems they're responsible for burning down a
building.

Their own firehouse, as a matter of fact.

Everyone was out answering multiple alarms, it seems -- including the
firefighter who was cooking dinner for the rest of the crew. In a hurry
to answer the call of duty, he apparently forgot to turn off the stove.
Ten trucks from other stations responded to put out the fire.

Seiji Hori, spokesperson for the Nagoya City Fire Department,
articulated the embarrassment they feel about the incident: "We are an
institute that should be in a position to educate people about fire, so
we are extremely sorry that such an incident happened."

He added that they might consider ordering out for dinner from now on.

In fairness to those firefighters, they're embarrassed about their
mistake. They see the inconsistency. Imagine, though, that they didn't.
What would you think if the next time they went out on a call, they
berated a homeowner for using a faulty space heater or burning a candle
too close to the curtains or overloading an outlet? What would you say?
"Physician, heal thyself?" "Practice what you preach?" You'd see the
inconsistency, even if those firefighters didn't. "Wait, didn't you
burn down your own station with your carelessness?" you might
rightfully ask. And you probably wouldn't hear anything they had to say
very well, even though they might be right.

A police officer who commits a crime, a doctor whose negligence harms
or kills a patient, a judge who takes a bribe, a broker who steals his
client's money are people who especially should know better than to do
the things they do. They don't see the inconsistency, or more likely
they see it and choose to live with it. Like those firefighters in
Japan, they should be embarrassed. For whatever reason, they're not.
They continue to do things that contradict who they say they are and
what they're supposed to be doing. And when everything comes to light,
they're left with no credibility. Who trusts a hypocrite, after all?

To point accusatory fingers only at others, though, is to miss the
point entirely.

Jesus probably knew first-hand what it was like to have sawdust in his
eye. I'm fairly sure that Joseph didn't use safety goggles. So when he
wanted to address the human tendency to pass judgment on others while
giving ourselves a pass, the sawdust metaphor would have been a natural
one. Imagine two carpenters working. One gets a little sawdust in his
eye. It hurts, his eye starts tearing, his vision is obscured. His
buddy notices that speck of sawdust, points it out, and appoints
himself "Official Sawdust Remover." But, he never even mentions his own
little problem: he has a whole plank hanging out of his eye. The
absurdity of the situation makes the point: the carpenter with the
plank needs to deal with own problem before he starts pointing out his
buddy's sawdust issues.

Who trusts a hypocrite?

What is it about us that wants so desperately to find the faults in
each other? How many marriages have been left dead and cold by husbands
and wives who carefully note every sin of their spouses and are blind
to their own? How many churches have been split by self-appointed
"guardians of truth" diligently searching out doctrinal specks in
others without noticing how their own lack of love and grace blinds
them? How many people who feel the tug of the Holy Spirit on their
hearts have been pushed away from Jesus forever by fault-finding
Christian Pharisees whose own sins are secret only to themselves? How
many preachers have battered their churches into submission for every
speck in their lives while remaining unable to acknowledge the
splintered, rotting lumber of their own sins and shortcomings?

It's easier, isn't it? That's the reason, when we're honest, for our
tendency to prefer magnifying glasses turned on others to mirrors
turned on ourselves. There's something satisfying, gratifying, in a
twisted sort of way, about discovering dirt on other people. It's the
reason people buy the publications in the grocery store checkout line,
and it's the reason other people can look down on them for it. And it's
the reason hypocrisy still lives in the church.

That's what Jesus called it, of course: Hypocrisy. I know, it's kind of
an ugly word. It's pretending, play-acting, and the only way to
eliminate hypocrisy is to end the show and take off the mask, make-up,
and costume that we've used to camouflage our sins and pretend to be
something we're not. It's to admit that we're only playing at being
perfect, and that we're no better than the people at whom we've
delighted in pointing fingers.

There are times, of course, when letting something someone has done go
by unchallenged can have deadly consequences. Sometimes love demands
that we speak up and speak out, that we take someone aside and call him
on something we've seen. But when those times come, they should not
cause me joy. And if those times seem to come often, then maybe I
should ask why I feel compelled to judge others so often. "In the same
way you judge others, and with the measure you use," Jesus says, "it
will be measured to you" (Matthew 7:2). The truest measure of my
attitude toward others is whether or not I would want God to judge me
by the standard I'm using.

Who trusts a hypocrite? So by God's grace, we'll pay attention to the
planks in our own eyes. By his strength, we'll remove them. By his
mercy, we'll receive his forgiveness and healing. And by his Spirit,
we'll be able to help others do the same. Not as superiors handing down
the verdict on their sins, but as fellow-strugglers who are just as
dependent as they are on the love of a faithful God poured out in the
One who took our sins on Himself.

When we warn someone about leaving the stove on, let us never forget
that we've burned down our share of buildings.

Morning & Evening -- Ezekiel 34:26 and Zechariah 1:12,13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

MORNING:

"I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there
shall be showers of blessing."
-- Ezekiel 34:26

Here is sovereign mercy-"I will give them the shower in its season." Is
it not sovereign, divine mercy?-for who can say, "I will give them
showers," except God? There is only one voice which can speak to the
clouds, and bid them beget the rain. Who sendeth down the rain upon the
earth? Who scattereth the showers upon the green herb? Do not I, the
Lord? So grace is the gift of God, and is not to be created by man. It
is also needed grace. What would the ground do without showers? You may
break the clods, you may sow your seeds, but what can you do without
the rain? As absolutely needful is the divine blessing. In vain you
labour, until God the plenteous shower bestows, and sends salvation
down. Then, it is plenteous grace. "I will send them showers." It does
not say, "I will send them drops," but "showers." So it is with grace.
If God gives a blessing, he usually gives it in such a measure that
there is not room enough to receive it. Plenteous grace! Ah! we want
plenteous grace to keep us humble, to make us prayerful, to make us
holy; plenteous grace to make us zealous, to preserve us through this
life, and at last to land us in heaven. We cannot do without saturating
showers of grace. Again, it is seasonable grace. "I will cause the
shower to come down in his season." What is thy season this morning? Is
it the season of drought? Then that is the season for showers. Is it a
season of great heaviness and black clouds? Then that is the season for
showers. "As thy days so shall thy strength be." And here is a varied
blessing. "I will give thee showers of blessing." The word is in the
plural. All kinds of blessings God will send. All God's blessings go
together, like links in a golden chain. If he gives converting grace,
he will also give comforting grace. He will send "showers of blessing."
Look up to-day, O parched plant, and open thy leaves and flowers for a
heavenly watering.

EVENING:

"O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy upon
Jerusalem? ... And the Lord answered the angel ... with good
words and comfortable words."
-- Zechariah 1:12,13

What a sweet answer to an anxious enquiry! This night let us rejoice in
it. O Zion, there are good things in store for thee; thy time of
travail shall soon be over; thy children shall be brought forth; thy
captivity shall end. Bear patiently the rod for a season, and under the
darkness still trust in God, for his love burneth towards thee. God
loves the church with a love too deep for human imagination: he loves
her with all his infinite heart. Therefore let her sons be of good
courage; she cannot be far from prosperity to whom God speaketh "good
words and comfortable words." What these comfortable words are the
prophet goes on to tell us: "I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion
with a great jealousy." The Lord loves his church so much that he
cannot bear that she should go astray to others; and when she has done
so, he cannot endure that she should suffer too much or too heavily. He
will not have his enemies afflict her: he is displeased with them
because they increase her misery. When God seems most to leave his
church, his heart is warm towards her. History shows that whenever God
uses a rod to chasten his servants, he always breaks it afterwards, as
if he loathed the rod which gave his children pain. "Like as a father
pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." God hath
not forgotten us because he smites-his blows are no evidences of want
of love. If this is true of his church collectively, it is of necessity
true also of each individual member. You may fear that the Lord has
passed you by, but it is not so: he who counts the stars, and calls
them by their names, is in no danger of forgetting his own children. He
knows your case as thoroughly as if you were the only creature he ever
made, or the only saint he ever loved. Approach him and be at peace.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Delight Of Sacrifice"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 24, 2009

THE DELIGHT OF SACRIFICE

I will very gladly spend and be spent for you;

2 Corinthians 12:15
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+12:15&sr=1

When the Spirit of God has shed abroad the love of God in our hearts,
we begin deliberately to identify ourselves with Jesus Christ's
interests in other people, and Jesus Christ is interested in every
kind of man there is. We have no right in Christian work to be guided
by our affinities; this is one of the biggest tests of our
relationship to Jesus Christ. The delight of sacrifice is that I lay
down my life for my Friend, not fling it away, but deliberately lay
my life out for Him and His interests in other people, not for a
cause. Paul spent himself for one purpose only - that he might win
men to Jesus Christ. Paul attracted to Jesus all the time, never to
himself. "I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means
save some." When a man says he must develop a holy life alone with
God, he is of no more use to his fellow men: he puts himself on a
pedestal, away from the common run of men. Paul became a sacramental
personality; wherever he went, Jesus Christ helped Himself to his
life. Many of us are after our own ends, and Jesus Christ cannot help
Himself to our lives. If we are abandoned to Jesus, we have no ends
of our own to serve. Paul said he knew how to be a "door-mat" without
resenting it, because the mainspring of his life was devotion to
Jesus. We are apt to be devoted, not to Jesus Christ, but to the
things which emancipate us spiritually. That was not Paul's motive.
"I could wish my self were accursed from Christ for my brethren" -
wild, extravagant - is it? When a man is in love it is not an
exaggeration to talk in that way, and Paul is in love with Jesus
Christ.

Praying with Paul : "The Debt of Love"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE DEBT OF LOVE

Romans 13:8-10
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+13:8-10

Dear Father,

I owe love to my fellow man, as you have said. What an endless
debt! How can I keep your command to love my neighbor as myself?
What would it be like to live in a world where such unselfishness
prevailed? Ah, it would be heaven on earth, therefore such behavior
is a precondition of our heavenly inheritance.

But Lord, be gentle in your judgment toward me. I fall so far
short on this. Love would absolutely do no wrong to one's neighbor
- never taking anything that was his, or even wanting to. So fill
me with love, so that I may fulfill your law.

In the name of Jesus, help me, Lord. Amen.

WJD! -- Adultery! -- Matthew 5:27-28

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Adultery!

"You have heard that it was said, 'Don't do the sin of
adultery.' But I tell you that if a person looks at a woman
and wants to sin sexually with her, then that person has
already done that sin with the woman in his mind."

-- Matthew 5:27-28 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
In an era where adultery is considered acceptable, or at least
something to be ignored, Jesus' standard of an inner-driven
righteousness that transcends the call of the Law to be sexually pure
seems extreme. But adultery in practice begins with adultery in the
heart. More than just a look, lust is a look to have and possess. That
kind of lust has already moved the heart into action to betray a holy
covenant between God, a husband, and a wife. This betrayal is wrong. We
must not hide behind righteous exteriors when our interior world is
rotting with evil. We must deal with this lust or it will consume us.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Lord God Almighty, create in me a clean heart. I want to be more like
you in my character: pure, resisting things that are evil, and
faithful, honoring my commitment to you and to others. Please forgive
me in my times of weakness and mold me into your holy servant to be
used for your glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
