Today's Verse : Psalm 69:30-32

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 14, 2007

VERSE:
I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with
thanksgiving. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than
a bull with its horns and hoofs. The poor will see and be glad --
you who seek God, may your hearts live!
-- Psalm 69:30-32

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+69:30-32

THOUGHT:
Our praise should not only please God, it should also produce
joy and gladness in the streets among the poor! Why? Because praise
invites us to not only applaud God for what he does, but to also
join him in partnership as he does it. God's generosity, which
evokes our praise, should stir our generosity, which in turn
blesses others and leads them to praise God!

PRAYER:
Holy God, Almighty and majestic King, you are worthy of all
honor and praise. You have done wonderful and mighty things. You
have poured out your blessings upon me. You have kept your promises
and provided me with the way of salvation. Please empower and
strengthen me as I commit myself to bless, serve, and encourage
others for your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Who Me? 4

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and
the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful
of him, the son of man that You care for him? Psalm 8:3-4 NIV

Let me share some interesting facts about the ocean. Do you
realize how large the ocean is? If the world's tallest mountain, Mount
Everest, were placed on the bottom of the ocean at its deepest point,
there would still be 1.3 miles of ocean from the top of the mountain to
the top of the water. Do you know how much salt there is in the ocean?
An estimate of 50,000,000,000,000,000 tons of salt exist in the ocean.
If you were to take out all the salt and place it on the surface of the
earth, it would stack up 150 feet tall all over the earth. Wow! That's a
lot of salt!

Why do I share these facts? They are interesting, but what good will they
do for you and me in our daily lives? Well, I just can't get over the
fact that a God so big could love me so much. Why would a God who,
according to the Bible, can hold 50 (? whatever that number is with 15
zeroes after it) worth of salt in the palm of His hand, care anything
for little ole me? Why, when He is responsible for such vastness, would
He even bother to count the hairs on my head? (I know that job is easier
now than it used to be, but still.)

I don't know why, except that the Bible says we were created for His
glory. But, I know this: I'm glad He does! It makes me appreciate Him
more. I'm more determined, once I realize His significance, and His
power, to rely on Him than ever before.

What about you? Can you love a God like that?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Give Thee or Give Me, by Bill Sherrill

Well here we are, trapped between the "Thank You" and the "Give Me"
seasons. Somehow it seems that Thanksgiving should follow Christmas.
That way, after everyone finished getting their Christmas gifts, they
could spend a little time giving thanks.

Jesus taught, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35),
but it is difficult to find many who agree with him. I am reminded of
Lucy in the "Peanuts" cartoon. She invariably had a "get list" made up
each Christmas. Of course, Lucy represented the perennial selfish child
in the cartoon, but humor is seldom funny unless it is close to
recognized fact. The world is full of Lucys. It is just that most of
them are a little less obvious with their "get lists."

Jesus said, "The good man out of the good treasure of his heart
produces good" (Luke 6:45 RSV). We might hope that the season of
thoughtful thanksgiving we have just finished might lead us to overflow
with gratitude and produce an outpouring of true gift giving.

Several years ago, a man who was obviously upset said; "Give, give,
give! That is all I ever hear from the church!"

Let it be the spirit of selfless giving.

The man to whom he spoke quietly answered, "You pretty well summed up
the central theme of Christianity."

This theme may be best caught from John's gospel and one of the Bible's
favorite verses. "For God so loved the world that he GAVE his only Son
.." (John 3:16, emphasis added). When the hymn writer, Augustus M.
Toplady, penned "Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to thy cross I
cling," he certainly was not referring to a selfishly clutched hand.
But, many today could sing that song with gusto if only they could
eliminate "the cross" from the phrase.

If there is to be a spirit to this season of the year, let it be the
spirit of selfless giving. Learn the true lesson of Thanksgiving by
giving liberally out of thankfulness!

Morning & Evening -- Ezra 7:22 and Isaiah 54:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, December 13, 2007

MORNING:

"Salt without prescribing how much."
-- Ezra 7:22

Salt was used in every offering made by fire unto the Lord, and from
its preserving and purifying properties it was the grateful emblem of
divine grace in the soul. It is worthy of our attentive regard that,
when Artaxerxes gave salt to Ezra the priest, he set no limit to the
quantity, and we may be quite certain that when the King of kings
distributes grace among his royal priesthood, the supply is not cut
short by him. Often are we straitened in ourselves, but never in the
Lord. He who chooses to gather much manna will find that he may have as
much as he desires. There is no such famine in Jerusalem that the
citizens should eat their bread by weight and drink their water by
measure. Some things in the economy of grace are measured; for instance
our vinegar and gall are given us with such exactness that we never
have a single drop too much, but of the salt of grace no stint is made,
"Ask what thou wilt and it shall be given unto thee." Parents need to
lock up the fruit cupboard, and the sweet jars, but there is no need to
keep the salt-box under lock and key, for few children will eat too
greedily from that. A man may have too much money, or too much honour,
but he cannot have too much grace. When Jeshurun waxed fat in the
flesh, he kicked against God, but there is no fear of a man's becoming
too full of grace: a plethora of grace is impossible. More wealth
brings more care, but more grace brings more joy. Increased wisdom is
increased sorrow, but abundance of the Spirit is fulness of joy.
Believer, go to the throne for a large supply of heavenly salt. It will
season thine afflictions, which are unsavoury without salt; it will
preserve thy heart which corrupts if salt be absent, and it will kill
thy sins even as salt kills reptiles. Thou needest much; seek much, and
have much.

EVENING:

"I will make thy windows of agates."
-- Isaiah 54:12

The church is most instructively symbolized by a building erected by
heavenly power, and designed by divine skill. Such a spiritual house
must not be dark, for the Israelites had light in their dwellings;
there must therefore be windows to let the light in and to allow the
inhabitants to gaze abroad. These windows are precious as agates: the
ways in which the church beholds her Lord and heaven, and spiritual
truth in general, are to be had in the highest esteem. Agates are not
the most transparent of gems, they are but semi-pellucid at the best:

"Our knowledge of that life is small,
Our eye of faith is dim."

Faith is one of these precious agate windows, but alas! it is often so
misty and beclouded, that we see but darkly, and mistake much that we
do see. Yet if we cannot gaze through windows of diamonds and know even
as we are known, it is a glorious thing to behold the altogether lovely
One, even though the glass be hazy as the agate. Experience is another
of these dim but precious windows, yielding to us a subdued religious
light, in which we see the sufferings of the Man of Sorrows, through
our own afflictions. Our weak eyes could not endure windows of
transparent glass to let in the Master's glory, but when they are
dimmed with weeping, the beams of the Sun of Righteousness are
tempered, and shine through the windows of agate with a soft radiance
inexpressibly soothing to tempted souls. Sanctification, as it conforms
us to our Lord, is another agate window. Only as we become heavenly can
we comprehend heavenly things. The pure in heart see a pure God. Those
who are like Jesus see him as he is. Because we are so little like him,
the window is but agate; because we are somewhat like him, it is agate.
We thank God for what we have, and long for more. When shall we see God
and Jesus, and heaven and truth, face to face?

My Utmost For His Highest : "What To Pray For"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 13, 2007

WHAT TO PRAY FOR

Men ought always to pray, and not to faint

Luke 18:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+18:1&sr=1

You cannot intercede if you do not believe in the reality of the
Redemption; you will turn intercession into futile sympathy with
human beings which will only increase their submissive content to
being out of touch with God. In intercession you bring the person, or
the circumstance that impinges on you before God until you are moved
by His attitude towards that person or circumstance. Intercession
means filling up "that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ,"
and that is why there are so few intercessors. Intercession is put on
the line of - "Put yourself in his place." Never! Try to put yourself
in God's place.

As a worker, be careful to keep pace with the communications of
reality from God or you will be crushed. If you know too much, more
than God has engineered for you to know, you cannot pray, the
condition of the people is so crushing that you cannot get through to
reality.

Our work lies in coming into definite contact with God about
everything, and we shirk it by becoming active workers. We do the
things that can be tabulated but we will not intercede. Intercession
is the one thing that has no snares, because it keeps our
relationship with God completely open.

The thing to watch in intercession is that no soul is patched up, a
soul must get through into contact with the life of God. Think of the
number of souls God has brought about our path and we have dropped
them! When we pray on the ground of Redemption, God creates something
He can create in no other way than through intercessory prayer.

Praying with Paul : "Christ in Us, Hope of Glory"

CHRIST IN US, HOPE OF GLORY

Colossians 1:24-27

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+1:24-27

Dear Father,

Help us have the attitude of Paul, who could rejoice in suffering
for the sake of your body, the church, seeing his own suffering as
an extension of Christ's suffering.

May the members of the body of Christ make your word fully known,
the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations but is now
made visible to your holy people.

How great among the nations is the wealth imparted to them by the
glory of this mystery, which is Christ in us, the hope of glory.

It is in his name that I pray. Amen.

The Brokenness of Sin and Shame

They arrested Jesus and took him away. They brought Jesus
into the house of the high priest. Peter followed them, but
he did not come near Jesus. The soldiers started a fire in
the middle of the yard and sat together. Peter sat with them.
A servant girl saw Peter sitting there. She could see because
of the light from the fire. The girl looked closely at
Peter's face. Then she said, "This man was also with him
(Jesus)!" But Peter said this was not true. He said, "Lady, I
don't know him." A short time later, another person saw Peter
and said, "You are also one of those people that follow him
(Jesus)." But Peter said, "Man, I am not one of his
followers!" About an hour later, another man said, "It is
true! This man was with him (Jesus). He is from Galilee!" The
man said he was sure about this. But Peter said, "Man, I
don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while
Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed. Then the Lord
(Jesus) turned and looked into Peter's eyes. And Peter
remembered what the Lord had said: "Before the rooster crows
in the morning, you will say three times that you don't know
me." Then Peter went outside and cried bitterly.

-- Luke 22:54-62 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Peter suffered the brokenness of sin and shame. The Lord had warned
him, yet he failed anyway. Despite his rash promises, Peter denied the
Lord ... three times. The crowing of the rooster roused Peter from his
confused stupor and ushered him into the bitter and undeniable reality
of his sinful desertion of his friend and Lord. I have had a moment or
two like that. Maybe you have, too. It's that moment when you realize
that you've dishonored the Lord and let him down, even though you
promised yourself, and the Savior, that you wouldn't let him down ...
again. Peter is our great reminder that our failures don't determine
our future with the Lord. God can take those failures and make
something good of them. While our messy failures are not his plan for
us, he can take our messes and restore us back into his plan. So
please, don't give up when you think you have failed the Lord. Instead,
let your sin break you and then come back and openly confess that sin
to the Lord and be restored. He will bless you and use you to bless
others if you will come back to him.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Precious and holy God, my Abba Father, forgive me for my weakness and
sin. Forgive me for the arrogance of trying to battle my weakness and
Satan's power on my own strength. I trust in your powerful and
transforming forgiveness. Help me believe that you can take my failures
and my past and use them to encourage and bless others. In Jesus' name.
Amen.
