A Warning concerning Today's Stupefying World

Luke 17:25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected
by this generation. (26) And even as it happened in the days of
Noah, so will it be also in the days of the Son of Man: (27)
They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they
were being given in marriage, until the day in which Noah
entered into the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all.
(28) Likewise, even as it happened in the days of Lot: they
were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were
selling, they were planting, they were building; (29) But on
the day in which Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and
brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. (30) It will be
in the same way on the day in which the Son of Man is revealed.

In the days of Noah certain conditions existed. People were
stupefied by eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in
marriage. Furthermore, they did not know until the flood came
and took them away. It will be the same in the days of the Son
of Man. People will be stupefied by the necessities of this
life, not knowing that God's judgment (signified by the flood)
will come upon them by the Lord's coming. The believers,
however, should be dedrugged and soberly know that the Lord is
coming to execute God's judgment upon this corrupted world.

Eating, drinking, and marriage were originally ordained by God
for man's existence. But due to man's lust, Satan utilizes
these necessities of human life to occupy man and keep him from
God's interests. Toward the end of this age, this situation
will be intensified and will reach its climax during the days
of the Son of Man. The characteristics of the days of Lot were
eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, and building.
These last four characteristics indicate business. Consider the
characteristics of today's world. The characteristics of this
generation are eating, drinking, marrying, giving in marriage,
buying, selling, planting, and building.

The conditions of evil living that stupefied the generation of
Noah before the deluge and the generation of Lot before the
destruction of Sodom portray the perilous condition of man's
living before the Lord's parousia (presence, coming) and the
great tribulation (Matt. 24:3, 21). If we would participate in
the overcomers' rapture to enjoy the Lord's parousia and escape
the great tribulation, we must overcome the stupefying effect
of man's living today.

Live with Passion, by Phil Ware


Special Note:
This is part two of a continuing series of messages Phil has
written to share the values his father held dear and that he wants
to pass on to his adult children who never got to know their Daddy
Al because he died so young. The links to the whole series can be
found at the end of the article.

Dear Zachary and Megan,

Well, this is my second letter to you about your grandfather's values.
Even though neither of you ever got to know him, you've seen some of
Daddy Al's traits in me -- good ones and bad ones, I'm afraid. But, it
still saddens me to know that you didn't get to experience some of his
wild and crazy antics firsthand. Even your mom never knew my dad when
he was well. This makes me sad to think about, so I think I'll just get
to the second principle he taught me that I hope will live in you.

Principle Two: Live with Passion!

Your grandmother, MiMi, always said of Daddy Al, that right or wrong,
he was always enthusiastic, certain, and passionate. She was absolutely
correct.

Your grandfather lived with passion. His years on earth may have been
few, but his life was certainly full. He lived the motto, "Pedal to the
metal!" He taught me the phrase, "Muy sicem!" which is not in any
dictionary, but was just his way of saying, "Go get 'em tiger and don't
let anything stop you!"

Daddy Al didn't just talk about living with passion, he was a great
example of living with passion. Sometimes, however, that passion got
the best of him -- his anger could flare, especially in the later years
when his medicine made it worse. For these times, he later apologized
and cried, asking for my forgiveness. This was several years before his
death. He realized that he had been impatient and quick to anger for
much of life, and so prayed that God would take that away or teach him
to be more patient. He felt his illness was part of God's discipline
and correction to help him mature past this weakness in his character.
Even in illness, he was passionate about being the man God wanted him
to be.

But, your Daddy Al was also passionate in fun and exciting ways. He is
the one who taught me the loud hyena laugh. He would use it to spice
things up at just the right time. Anywhere we went could be fun,
because if things got boring, you knew Daddy Al was going to spice
things up.

The doctors he called on as a pharmaceutical rep loved him, too. He
knew all the latest jokes as well as how to handle product information
and the science behind it. The receptionists and nurses liked him, too,
because he remembered their names, brought them cokes and treats, and
would listen attentively to the stories about their families.

Some of my greatest memories of Daddy Al's passion involved his leading
singing. He was a worship leader before they were called worship
leaders. He would fill the worship time with what he called "toe
tappers and heart tinglers" as he tried to stir the church's passion.
He told the people to put down their song books and just sing along
from their heart as he led the first and last verse of five or six
songs in a row. Because he often led youth and college devotionals, he
would also teach the older folks new songs the kids sang.

As I sing the new songs that are so popular today, I miss your
grandfather very much. He would be so pumped by these new songs we've
learned to sing the last decade, especially the new powerful hymns over
the last few years. He wanted our worship singing to stir our souls and
our souls to stir our passion to do something great for God.

Holy passion makes you fearless under pressure!

Daddy Al also loved to tell stories. Most of them were either funny or
dramatic. He got this story telling gift from his mother, Granny. He
would tell stories filled with emotion and passion to try to convince
teenagers and young adults to live for Jesus. Many of the stories were
from his own experience. Others were stories he had heard. Some people
just seem to have a gift for remembering and telling a story, and he
sure had that gift. He sure knew how to use it to motivate, inspire,
and touch our hearts with emotion.

Daddy Al also believed that true passion came from the Holy Spirit. He
believed and taught about the Holy Spirit when most folks were afraid
to do it. He loved Romans 8, and this was his favorite chapter in the
Bible even when in his last days 2 Corinthians 4 and 5 became so
comforting.

Passion meant that life could be fun. This idea of passionate fun made
Daddy Al a great motivator of young people. If "perfect loves casts out
all fear" (1 John 4:18), then holy passion makes you fearless under
pressure! This understanding of life helped him motivate people as a
dad, a coach, and also as a mentor. In dad's mind, if you live
passionately -- fail or succeed -- you have been successful, at least
that's how he viewed it. So what is there to fear? "No, in all these
things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Romans
8:37 TNIV), because "I can do all this through him who gives me
strength" (Philippians 4:13).

For Daddy Al, when the Holy Spirit lives in you, there is no room for
mediocrity, half-hearted efforts, or life filled with boredom. God's
Spirit stirs holy passion in us and leads us to do great things, things
we could not dream of doing on our own! "Don't put out the Spirit's
fire!" was one of those verses (1 Thessalonians 5:18) I associated
early on with your grandfather. And the conclusion to Paul's powerful
prayer is one that meant so much to him:

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or
imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him
be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, for ever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21).

My prayer is that whatever you do in life, you find something you can
do with passion. If it isn't your job, then find a ministry or hobby or
service interest that lets you get worn out living your passion. And
when you are tired and weary, thank God for the opportunity to do
something great for the Kingdom.

I love you both, always, and pray that you will live and love with
passion!

MORNING:

"Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a
draught."
-- Luke 5:4

We learn from this narrative, the necessity of human agency. The
draught of fishes was miraculous, yet neither the fisherman nor his
boat, nor his fishing tackle were ignored; but all were used to take
the fishes. So in the saving of souls, God worketh by means; and while
the present economy of grace shall stand, God will be pleased by the
foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. When God worketh
without instruments, doubtless he is glorified; but he hath himself
selected the plan of instrumentality as being that by which he is most
magnified in the earth. Means of themselves are utterly unavailing.
"Master, we have toiled all the night and have taken nothing." What was
the reason of this? Were they not fishermen plying their special
calling? Verily, they were no raw hands; they understood the work. Had
they gone about the toil unskilfully? No. Had they lacked industry? No,
they had toiled. Had they lacked perseverance? No, they had toiled all
the night. Was there a deficiency of fish in the sea? Certainly not,
for as soon as the Master came, they swam to the net in shoals. What,
then, is the reason? Is it because there is no power in the means of
themselves apart from the presence of Jesus? "Without him we can do
nothing." But with Christ we can do all things. Christ's presence
confers success. Jesus sat in Peter's boat, and his will, by a
mysterious influence, drew the fish to the net. When Jesus is lifted up
in his Church, his presence is the Church's power-the shout of a king
is in the midst of her. "I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto
me." Let us go out this morning on our work of soul fishing, looking up
in faith, and around us in solemn anxiety. Let us toil till night
comes, and we shall not labour in vain, for he who bids us let down the
net, will fill it with fishes.

EVENING:

"Praying in the Holy Ghost."
-- Jude 20

Mark the grand characteristic of true prayer-"In the Holy Ghost." The
seed of acceptable devotion must come from heaven's storehouse. Only
the prayer which comes from God can go to God. We must shoot the Lord's
arrows back to him. That desire which he writes upon our heart will
move his heart and bring down a blessing, but the desires of the flesh
have no power with him.

Praying in the Holy Ghost is praying in fervency. Cold prayers ask the
Lord not to hear them. Those who do not plead with fervency, plead not
at all. As well speak of lukewarm fire as of lukewarm prayer-it is
essential that it be red hot. It is praying perseveringly. The true
suppliant gathers force as he proceeds, and grows more fervent when God
delays to answer. The longer the gate is closed, the more vehemently
does he use the knocker, and the longer the angel lingers the more
resolved is he that he will never let him go without the blessing.
Beautiful in God's sight is tearful, agonizing, unconquerable
importunity. It means praying humbly, for the Holy Spirit never puffs
us up with pride. It is his office to convince of sin, and so to bow us
down in contrition and brokenness of spirit. We shall never sing Gloria
in excelsis except we pray to God De profundis: out of the depths must
we cry, or we shall never behold glory in the highest. It is loving
prayer. Prayer should be perfumed with love, saturated with love-love
to our fellow saints, and love to Christ. Moreover, it must be a prayer
full of faith. A man prevails only as he believes. The Holy Spirit is
the author of faith, and strengthens it, so that we pray believing
God's promise. O that this blessed combination of excellent graces,
priceless and sweet as the spices of the merchant, might be fragrant
within us because the Holy Ghost is in our hearts! Most blessed
Comforter, exert thy mighty power within us, helping our infirmities in
prayer.

THE EXCLUSIVENESS OF CHRIST

Is it not humiliating to be told that we must come to Jesus! Think of
the things we will not come to Jesus Christ about. If you want to
know how real you are, test yourself by these words - "Come unto Me."
In every degree in which you are not real, you will dispute rather
than come, you will quibble rather than come, you will go through
sorrow rather than come, you will do anything rather than come the
last lap of unutterable foolishness - "Just as I am." As long as you
have the tiniest bit of spiritual impertinence, it will always reveal
itself in the fact that you are expecting God to tell you to do a big
thing, and all He is telling you to do is to "come."

"Come unto Me." When you hear those words you will know that
something must happen in you before you can come. The Holy Spirit
will show you what you have to do, anything at all that will put the
axe at the root of the thing which is preventing you from getting
through. You will never get further until you are willing to do that
one thing. The Holy Spirit will locate the one impregnable thing in
you, but He cannot budge it unless you are willing to let Him.

How often have you come to God with your requests and gone away with
the feeling - Oh, well, I have done it this time! And yet you go away
with nothing, whilst all the time God has stood with outstretched
hands not only to take you, but for you to take Him. Think of the
invincible, unconquerable, unwearying patience of Jesus - "Come unto
Me."

Mustard Seed Thought: God's Promise One

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My
unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor My covenant of peace be
removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 NIV

God loves you! That is not going to change.

For several days we are going to be looking at promises of God. I hope
there will be at least one of these that you can apply to your life. You
can depend on the promises of God.

There is a road in my state that has had to close in recent years because of
falling rocks. One time it took several weeks to remove the debris
because there were so many rocks in the road. I drove past this place
shortly after the road reopened. I looked up at the hillside from where
these rocks had fallen and noticed something interesting. The hillside,
which is actually a small mountain, didn't look any different from the
way I had remembered it before. As many rocks that had fallen, there was
really no significant change to the original structure.

"Okay, Ron, good story, now what exactly are you trying to say?" (I heard
you!)

The point is that mountains and hills don't change much. They are fairly
constant in their appearance. It could take years to see a mountain
weather away. Mountains and hills are very stable. God uses this same
principle in describing His love for us. Mountains don't budge, and yet,
even if they could be moved, they could not be compared to God's love
for you and me.

When we think of something being "written in stone" or as "strong as a
mountain" we know it is secure. God's love cannot be described in words.
His love is secure and cannot be moved. In closing I'm reminded of what
Paul wrote in Romans after studying the love of God.

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or
persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
"For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to
be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors
through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor
life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor
any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus
our Lord."

Praise you Lord, for the promise of your love.

Praise God!


When one of the men saw that he was healed, he went back to
Jesus. He praised God loudly. He bowed down at Jesus' feet.
The man thanked Jesus. (This man was a Samaritan.)

KEY THOUGHT:
How do we respond when our cry for mercy receives its loving answer
from our Master? This story is a reminder of our need to unabashedly
praise and thank Jesus for his healing power, mercy, and grace. When
was the last time you fell face down and praised Jesus? When was the
last time you thanked him from the bottom of your heart and with your
physical posture. One of the key words for worship means to bow ("to
kiss the ground"). When was the last time you praised and thanked the
Lord for all that he has done for you with a genuine heart and a
prostrate posture?


TODAY'S PRAYER:
I praise you, O God my Abba Father, for your incredible mercy and
grace. Please remove my inhibitions and my pride and help me more
openly express to you my deeply felt thanks and praise through the
emotions of my heart, the words that grace my lips, and the posture of
my body. In Jesus' name. Amen.

THOUGHT:
As a minister, I am privileged to be present at many of the most
important events in people's lives. Good or bad, to be there at the
crossroads of life is a sacred trust. In those moments that are
hardest, dying and death, verses like this one fill my heart with
strength and remind me why I answered a call to serve in waters way
above my head. God's promise here is a great reminder that what he
began when he redeemed his people out of Egypt, he would also
complete by bringing them into the Promised Land. Now, we can hear
a more powerful promise behind these words. We can find it even
more reasonable to trust them. God did what he said for Israel.
Since he did for them, can't we say with confidence, "I know you
will guide us to your holy dwelling?"

PRAYER:
Tender Shepherd, you have led me through some very difficult
times and brought me safely through. Now as I seek to live for you,
please make your presence known. I truly believe that you are
guiding me to your holy dwelling, but sometimes, I must confess,
the way becomes difficult and faith becomes hard. Renew my courage,
O Lord, just as you did with reluctant Moses and untested Joshua.
Then, dear Lord, please use me to help others find your promise and
their way home to you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
