God's Holy Spirit, by Skye Noe

Today, October 31st is the holiday known to many as Halloween. A day
that draws mixed feelings from all who witness it. Some people embrace
the opportunity to dress up in scary costumes and play pranks on
friends, while others see it as a children's holiday with no meaning
other than free candy and cute costumes. It's the dark origination and
history of Halloween that draws such mixed feelings from Christians.
There are many verses of scripture that speak to a Christian's
association with darkness.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live
as children of light and find out what pleases the Lord. Have
nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather
expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the
disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light
becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible.Ephesians
5:8-14 ERV

Do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what
is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
3 John 1:11

Many Christians and churches have attempted to find ways of embracing
this holiday without actually embracing its dark roots. These attempts
include everything from Christian haunted houses that depict a
non-believer's journey to hell, to family oriented Fall Festivals that
play host to a variety of games and food.

God's Holy Spirit is the only spirit worth celebrating

I can not make the decision for every Christian in reference to their
observation of Halloween. That is a decision that each believer must
reach on their own through prayer and study of scripture. As believers
we are faced with the dilemma of living in this world but not of this
world. Though scriptures teach this world is influenced by spirits of
good and evil, we can stand boldly for God has revealed to us that ...

The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
1 John 4:4

No matter what evil spirits are present in this life, we know that God
has given us a spirit that is stronger than all others. The message of
God to this world is that God's Holy Spirit is the only spirit worth
celebrating, even on Halloween.

MORNING:

"Renew a right spirit within me."
-- Psalms 51:10

A backslider, if there be a spark of life left in him will groan after
restoration. In this renewal the same exercise of grace is required as
at our conversion. We needed repentance then; we certainly need it now.
We wanted faith that we might come to Christ at first; only the like
grace can bring us to Jesus now. We wanted a word from the Most High, a
word from the lip of the loving One, to end our fears then; we shall
soon discover, when under a sense of present sin, that we need it now.
No man can be renewed without as real and true a manifestation of the
Holy Spirit's energy as he felt at first, because the work is as great,
and flesh and blood are as much in the way now as ever they were. Let
thy personal weakness, O Christian, be an argument to make thee pray
earnestly to thy God for help. Remember, David when he felt himself to
be powerless, did not fold his arms or close his lips, but he hastened
to the mercy-seat with "renew a right spirit within me." Let not the
doctrine that you, unaided, can do nothing, make you sleep; but let it
be a goad in your side to drive you with an awful earnestness to
Israel's strong Helper. O that you may have grace to plead with God, as
though you pleaded for your very life-"Lord, renew a right spirit
within me." He who sincerely prays to God to do this, will prove his
honesty by using the means through which God works. Be much in prayer;
live much upon the Word of God; kill the lusts which have driven your
Lord from you; be careful to watch over the future uprisings of sin.
The Lord has his own appointed ways; sit by the wayside and you will be
ready when he passes by. Continue in all those blessed ordinances which
will foster and nourish your dying graces; and, knowing that all the
power must proceed from him, cease not to cry, "Renew a right spirit
within me."

EVENING:

"I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great
drought."
-- Hosea 13:5

Yes, Lord, thou didst indeed know me in my fallen state, and thou didst
even then choose me for thyself. When I was loathsome and
self-abhorred, thou didst receive me as thy child, and thou didst
satisfy my craving wants. Blessed for ever be thy name for this free,
rich, abounding mercy. Since then, my inward experience has often been
a wilderness; but thou hast owned me still as thy beloved, and poured
streams of love and grace into me to gladden me, and make me fruitful.
Yea, when my outward circumstances have been at the worst, and I have
wandered in a land of drought, thy sweet presence has solaced me. Men
have not known me when scorn has awaited me, but thou hast known my
soul in adversities, for no affliction dims the lustre of thy love.
Most gracious Lord, I magnify thee for all thy faithfulness to me in
trying circumstances, and I deplore that I should at any time have
forgotten thee and been exalted in heart, when I have owed all to thy
gentleness and love. Have mercy upon thy servant in this thing!

My soul, if Jesus thus acknowledged thee in thy low estate, be sure
that thou own both himself and his cause now that thou art in thy
prosperity. Be not lifted up by thy worldly successes so as to be
ashamed of the truth or of the poor church with which thou hast been
associated. Follow Jesus into the wilderness: bear the cross with him
when the heat of persecution grows hot. He owned thee, O my soul, in
thy poverty and shame-never be so treacherous as to be ashamed of him.
O for more shame at the thought of being ashamed of my best Beloved!
Jesus, my soul cleaveth to thee.

DISCERNMENT OF FAITH

We have the idea that God rewards us for our faith, it may he so in
the initial stages; but we do not earn anything by faith, faith
brings us into right relationship with God and gives God His
opportunity. God has frequently to knock the bottom board out of your
experience if you are a saint in order to get you into contact with
Himself. God wants you to understand that it is a life of faith, not
a life of sentimental enjoyment of His blessings. Your earlier life
of faith was narrow and intense, settled around a little sun-spot of
experience that had as much of sense as of faith in it, full of light
and sweetness; then God withdrew His conscious blessings in order to
teach you to walk by faith. You are worth far more to Him now than
you were in your days of conscious delight and thrilling testimony.

Faith by its very nature must be tried, and the real trial of faith
is not that we find it difficult to trust God, but that God's
character has to be cleared in our own minds. Faith in its actual
working out has to go through spells of unsyllabled isolation. Never
confound the trial of faith with the ordinary discipline of life,
much that we call the trial of faith is the inevitable result of
being alive. Faith in the Bible is faith in God against everything
that contradicts Him - I will remain true to God's character whatever
He may do. "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him" - this is the
most sublime utterance of faith in the whole of the Bible.

Shout Louder!

Jesus came near the city of Jericho. There was a blind man
sitting beside the road. The blind man was begging people for
money. When this man heard the people coming down the road,
he asked, "What is happening?" The people told him, "Jesus,
the one from Nazareth, is coming here." The blind man was
excited and said, "Jesus, Son of David! Please help me!" The
people that were in front, leading the group, criticized the
blind man. They told him not to speak. But the blind man
shouted more and more, "Son of David, please help me!"

KEY THOUGHT:
So often we let the noise and commotion of our crowded lives distract
us from Jesus' presence in our lives. Deep down, we know that we need
time in his presence -- time that comes from prayer and reading the
Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament.). So let's
intentionally cry out each day, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on
me!" Let's invite Jesus into our busy lives. When we let all our
distractions and responsibilities crowd Jesus out of our lives, let's
shout louder! If the blind man in Jesus' day wouldn't be silenced until
he came into the presence of Jesus, then we shouldn't settle for
anything less today.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, forgive me for letting the noise and "busyness" of my life
crowd Jesus out of my life. Make my heart yearn to learn more of Jesus
each day. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Jesus Style Forgiveness 3

The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, Romans 5:20 NIV

Could God have enough grace available for the deepest sin of your life? That really is the right question to ask yourself if you are struggling to accept His forgiveness.

Let me take it a step further. If you say He can't forgive you or that He hasn't, aren't you really saying He is not able to? As we saw yesterday, He promises to forgive our sins if we confess them, so if for some reason He wouldn't forgive yours, then either a) God is a liar or b) He isn't strong enough to do so. Would you want to make either claim of the One who set the stars and planets in space?

I think we know the truth about forgiveness. I just think we have to accept it and apply it in our life.

THOUGHT:
The Bible repeatedly reminds us that we are in a spiritual war
with forces that are strong, malicious, and evil (Ephesians
6:10-12). We should steer clear of every appearance of evil. We
shouldn't involve ourselves in anything related to Satan and his
work. But we also need to remember that our Lord is greater than
Satan and all of his evil angels. He is faithful. He will not
abandon us to our enemy. He will strengthen us and protect us from
attack if we will let him!

PRAYER:
Almighty God, thank you for giving me victory over Satan through
the sacrifice of your Son, his resurrection from the dead, and his
promised return to take me home to heaven. Please strengthen me and
empower me to overcome temptation and resist the deceptive
enticements of the Evil One. O Lord, it is only you that I want to
worship, serve, and obey. To you belongs all glory forever, and
ever, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

A Corporate Loaf on the Table (1)

Luke 22:19 And He took a loaf and gave thanks, and He broke it
and gave it to them, saying, This is My body which is being
given for you; do this in remembrance of Me 1Cor 11:24 And
having given thanks, He broke it and said, This is My body,
which is given for you; this do unto the remembrance of Me.

In the foregoing message we pointed out that in Luke 22:7-20 we
have both the Passover and the Lord's supper. In the Passover
the main thing enjoyed by God's chosen people was the lamb. The
meat of the lamb was for them to eat. But in the Lord's table
the main item for us to enjoy as New Testament believers is not
a lamb; the main item for our enjoyment is bread. This is very
significant...

When the Lord Jesus was offered to God for our redemption, He
was offered not as bread but as a Lamb. However, the outcome is
not the Lamb but bread. The Lamb was a single entity, but bread
is something corporate. It is not possible for a single grain
of wheat to form a loaf of bread. A loaf is a corporate entity,
something composed and constituted of many grains. With the
feast of the Passover there is not the concept of feasting on
something that is corporate in nature. But with the Lord's
table the symbols, especially the loaf, bear a very significant
characteristic, and this characteristic is that of a corporate
entity, a corporate body. It is very important that we realize
this.

The loaf in the Lord's table points to something that comes
after the Lord's death; it signifies something that issues from
the Lord in His resurrection. What is signified by the loaf is
not something before the Lord's death, but something after His
death and in His resurrection. Before His death, the Lord Jesus
was a single, individual Lamb. But what issues out of His death
in resurrection is a corporate entity. This entity is the loaf,
the bread. which signifies a corporate body. (Continued
