Today's Verse : Philippians 1:4-5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

January 4, 2008

VERSE:
In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because
of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now...
-- Philippians 1:4-5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+1:4-5

THOUGHT:
As we begin this new year, let's remember those with whom we are
partnered in mission and outreach. If we are evangelists or
missionaries by calling, then let's make a commitment to pray a
prayer of praise and thanksgiving for our supporting partners. If
we are members of a supporting congregation, then let's give thanks
for being able to support those who share the Gospel in foreign
lands and those who work among different cultures and in different
locations in our own country. To share in God's work with God's
people is truly a great blessing and privilege!

PRAYER:
Father of all peoples, give your Church a greater sense of
partnership in reaching those who do not know your saving grace.
Bless those everywhere who share the truth of Jesus with love,
courage, and faithfulness. In the name of the only true Savior,
Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Temple 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Temple 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
God said: "At times, I might shut up the heavens so that no rain falls, or I might command locusts to devour your crops, or I might send plagues among you." 2 Chronicles 7:13 NLT

If you read yesterday's thought, you will recall that Solomon had built the Lord a temple. God was pleased with Solomon, because Solomon had constructed the temple strictly out of love and devotion, expecting nothing in return. (As you may also remember, in this series we are heading towards a popular verse in hopes that we will better understand its application in our life.)

So, what's the deal? Doesn't sound much like He's pleased now, does it? How can we go in one verse from "I have chosen the temple" to " I will send plagues"?

In case you haven't grasped this aspect of God's character yet, you need to understand that we serve a God whose ways are not ours. God's thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Who can fully understand the mind of God?

The fact of the matter is this: God will sometimes allow His people to experience difficulty. (Can I get an AMEN out there?) There will be times in the Christian life when the world will seem to be caving in around you. Struggles will come. The pantry will be bare, the checkbook empty and the bill collector's calling. At times, the doctor will have bad news and some years you will see more of the funeral home than you care to. Yes, these times will come from the same God who is pleased with you.

I can't tell you what the next year will bring into your life; new trials? new hopes? new dreams? new stress? But, I can tell you that God will be the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. You can count on Him regardless of your situation.

Tomorrow we will see the verse we have been building towards, but until then, let me leave you with this thought: the God who allows the difficulties of life, is the same God who provides the relief! Trust Him for that today!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Do You See What I See?, by Mike Barres

I have a wooden plaque on my desk. It has thin pieces of wood placed on
it. If you look at the spaces between the pieces of wood carefully and
creatively, you can see the name, "Jesus." Some people can see it.
Others can't quite make it out.

In the Christmas song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" there is a line that
says, "Do you see what I see?" I often think about Simeon and Anna who
saw the baby Jesus at the temple (Luke 2:22-40). They saw Jesus and
recognized Him as the Messiah. There must have been many other people
at the Temple that day who didn't see anything other than a poor couple
and their young baby. Simeon and Anna, however, saw Jesus for who He
really is!

Recently a young man asked me, "Why was it that some of the people of
Jesus' day didn't recognize that he was the Messiah?" Some were too
familiar with him, knowing Him as Joseph and Mary's son (Mark 6:1-5).
Others expected the Messiah to be a political leader, but Jesus wasn't
who they expected. Sometimes people don't see because they aren't
looking or because they are just too busy or because they don't want to
see.

The Lord wants to show us things, but some of us aren't seeing them. We
have to want to see. We have to ask the Lord to help us. Like the song
has us pray, "Open the eyes of my heart Lord, I want to see you ..."

Remember these words and promises of Jesus?

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all
these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33 NKJV). "Ask, and
it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it
will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7).

I want to be like Simeon and Anna!

Do you desire to see what God is doing, or are you too busy to seek,
ask, and knock?

Do you want to see what His will is for your life, or would you rather
just keep doing what you want to do?

Just like some of the people of Jesus' day, some of us are too casual
about recognizing Jesus and what He is doing. We're not seeking,
asking, and knocking. Remember the words of the prophet Jeremiah as he
speaks for God: "And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for
Me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13).

In this season fresh after Christmas and as we begin the New Year, I
want to be like Simeon and Anna, who saw Jesus. I want to see Him and
know what He is doing. I want to follow His will for my life. So join
me in seeking and searching after Him with all of my heart!

Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 49:8 and Luke 3:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, January 3, 2008

MORNING:

"I will give thee for a covenant of the people."
-- Isaiah 49:8

Jesus Christ is himself the sum and substance of the covenant, and as
one of its gifts. He is the property of every believer. Believer, canst
thou estimate what thou hast gotten in Christ? "In him dwelleth all the
fulness of the Godhead bodily." Consider that word "God" and its
infinity, and then meditate upon "perfect man" and all his beauty; for
all that Christ, as God and man, ever had, or can have, is thine-out of
pure free favour, passed over to thee to be thine entailed property
forever. Our blessed Jesus, as God, is omniscient, omnipresent,
omnipotent. Will it not console you to know that all these great and
glorious attributes are altogether yours? Has he power? That power is
yours to support and strengthen you, to overcome your enemies, and to
preserve you even to the end. Has he love? Well, there is not a drop of
love in his heart which is not yours; you may dive into the immense
ocean of his love, and you may say of it all, "It is mine." Hath he
justice? It may seem a stern attribute, but even that is yours, for he
will by his justice see to it that all which is promised to you in the
covenant of grace shall be most certainly secured to you. And all that
he has as perfect man is yours. As a perfect man the Father's delight
was upon him. He stood accepted by the Most High. O believer, God's
acceptance of Christ is thine acceptance; for knowest thou not that the
love which the Father set on a perfect Christ, he sets on thee now? For
all that Christ did is thine. That perfect righteousness which Jesus
wrought out, when through his stainless life he kept the law and made
it honourable, is thine, and is imputed to thee. Christ is in the
covenant.

"My God, I am thine-what a comfort divine!
What a blessing to know that the Saviour is mine!
In the heavenly Lamb thrice happy I am,
And my heart it doth dance at the sound of his name."

EVENING:

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way
of the Lord, make his paths straight."
-- Luke 3:4

The voice crying in the wilderness demanded a way for the Lord, a way
prepared, and a way prepared in the wilderness. I would be attentive to
the Master's proclamation, and give him a road into my heart, cast up
by gracious operations, through the desert of my nature. The four
directions in the text must have my serious attention.

Every valley must be exalted. Low and grovelling thoughts of God must
be given up; doubting and despairing must be removed; and self-seeking
and carnal delights must be forsaken. Across these deep valleys a
glorious causeway of grace must be raised.

Every mountain and hill shall be laid low. Proud creature-sufficiency,
and boastful self-righteousness, must be levelled, to make a highway
for the King of kings. Divine fellowship is never vouchsafed to
haughty, highminded sinners. The Lord hath respect unto the lowly, and
visits the contrite in heart, but the lofty are an abomination unto
him. My soul, beseech the Holy Spirit to set thee right in this
respect.

The crooked shall be made straight. The wavering heart must have a
straight path of decision for God and holiness marked out for it.
Double-minded men are strangers to the God of truth. My soul, take heed
that thou be in all things honest and true, as in the sight of the
heart-searching God.

The rough places shall be made smooth. Stumbling-blocks of sin must be
removed, and thorns and briers of rebellion must be uprooted. So great
a visitor must not find miry ways and stony places when he comes to
honour his favoured ones with his company. Oh that this evening the
Lord may find in my heart a highway made ready by his grace, that he
may make a triumphal progress through the utmost bounds of my soul,
from the beginning of this year even to the end of it.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Clouds And Darkness"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 3, 2008

CLOUDS AND DARKNESS

Clouds and darkness are round about Him.

Psalms 97:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ps+97:2&sr=1

A man who has not been born of the Spirit of God Will tell you that
the teachings of Jesus are simple. But when you are baptized with the
Holy Ghost, you find "clouds and darkness are round about Him." When
we come into close contact with the teachings of Jesus Christ we have
our first insight into this aspect of things. The only possibility of
understanding the teaching of Jesus is by the light of the Spirit of
God on the inside. If we have never had the experience of taking our
commonplace religious shoes off our commonplace religious feet, and
getting rid of all the undue familiarity with which we approach God,
it is questionable whether we have ever stood in His presence. The
people who are flippant and familiar are those who have never yet
been introduced to Jesus Christ. After the amazing delight and
liberty of realizing what Jesus Christ does, comes the impenetrable
darkness of realizing Who He is.

Jesus said: "The words that I speak unto you," not the words I have
spoken, "they are spirit, and they are life." The Bible has been so
many words to us - clouds and darkness - then all of a sudden the
words become spirit and life because Jesus re-speaks them to us in a
particular condition. That is the way God speaks to us, not by
visions and dreams, but by words. When a man gets to God it is by the
most simple way of words.

MUTUAL SHARING

Romans 1:8-15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:8-15

Dear Father,

Thank you in Jesus Christ for every devoted Christian whose faith
is proclaimed abroad. I thank you that they are a strength to me.
Help me be a strength to them. May our mutual sharing of faith be a
rich spiritual blessing from you.

Help all of us to realize that we are under obligation to explain
our faith to the learned and unlearned, the cultured and the
backward, the wise and the foolish, everyone!

Fill us to overflowing with an eagerness to proclaim the Good News
about Jesus everywhere!

In his holy name I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Turn from Your Sins! -- Mark 1:4

Turn from Your Sins!

So John the Baptizer came and was baptizing people in the
desert area. He told the people to be baptized to show they
wanted to change their lives. Then their sins would be
forgiven.

-- Mark 1:4 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
God's messenger was John. He was called The Baptist, or The Baptizer,
because he baptized folks who came to him wanting to change their lives
to align with the will of God. John's mission was to prepare people for
the coming of the promised Christ. The purposes of this baptism were to
demonstrate people's turning from sin to God and to receive the
forgiveness of God. What can we learn from John's mission for our lives
today? First, God uses human messengers to reach the hearts of those
seeking to find him. Someone is out there seeking for God and God can
use you or me to be that messenger! Second, seeking God involves two
things: we turn to God and turn away from our sins. Third, everyone
needs the forgiveness of God; none of us is righteous and holy on our
efforts. In other words, we need God's gracious forgiveness. So I guess
that each of us can choose the message that he or she needs to hear
most clearly today. Have I come to God to receive his forgiveness and
grace? Have I truly turned to God and away from sin? To whom will I be
God's messenger?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, you are holy and awesome. Your power is beyond my
comprehension. As I think about praying to you, I am humbled that you
would hear me. Thank you for your gracious forgiveness that you have
shared with me through the gift of your Son. I commit my life to you
and I turn my back on sin in an effort to flee its grip on me. As a
recipient of your grace, please help me see the person, or people, for
whom I can be your messenger. In Jesus' name. Amen.
