Today's Verse : Acts 2:23

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 23, 2008

VERSE:
"[Jesus] was handed over to you by God's set purpose and
foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to
death by nailing him to the cross."
-- Acts 2:23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Acts+2:23

THOUGHT:
When we think of the Cross, two words we must never associate
with it are the words "tragic accident." Peter makes very clear
that two separate streams of power converged at the cross. Evil had
its way and brought the Son of God to the Cross. God had his plan
and he allowed the cross to happen to redeem us. The Cross was no
accident. What hell had intended as our ultimate defeat, God used
to bring us redemption and triumph. The best and worst of all
things collided. Of course the Cross wasn't the ultimate answer in
this battle; the empty tomb and the resurrected Lord are. We are
the victorious recipients of this grace, paid at such an agonizing
cost, administered in such a cruel manner by our greatest
adversary, and secured by Jesus' triumph over the grave.

PRAYER:
Holy God, thank you for having a plan in place that insures that
my sins can be forgiven and my future with you is secured. Thank
you for paying the price for that plan to work. Thank you for
triumphing over the wickedness of hell and the work of evil people.
I love you so much for all you are and all you have done for me. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Gut Call Four

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Gut Call Four
Making Wise Decisions Quickly By: Ron Edmondson
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalms 119:11NIV

If you want to be able to make gut decisions, then you will have to educate your gut. Using wisdom in a moments notice means that you have acquired wisdom over time. You cant enter the realm of making big decisions quickly if you havent invested in building wisdom along the way.

My boys never understood why they have to take courses in school they will never use again. They havent yet developed the insight that everything we learn adds to what we already know and develops our capacity to learn even more. Life experience and education builds upon itself. The ability to reason through an algebra problem helps one later reason through another life problem. Art appreciation now helps me appreciate other parts of Gods creation I might otherwise miss.

Dont quit gaining wisdom from Gods Word. You may have read the Bible a hundred times (probably not for most of us), but read it again. Ask God to show you new insights into His character and being. Ask Him to show you His ways. Sit with Him long enough in prayer to grow in your love and knowledge of your Creator.

Heres a start. Read a Proverb a day for a month. Watch how God fills you with wisdom to make wise (and quick) decisions.

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, have a little fun and go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

Lessons from a Hummingbird, by Alan Smith

I want to share with you something that happened to me a couple of
years ago. I was doing some yard work around the house. After I
finished, I went through the garage to get back into the house.

But, as I was climbing the stairs, I heard a loud fluttering of wings
above me. My first thought was that a large moth or small bat had
gotten itself trapped, but then I realized it was a tiny bird -- a
hummingbird! Its wings were flapping with great intensity as the bird
slammed itself repeatedly into the ceiling. It was clearly intent on
flying upward, but there was no way out in that direction No doubt the
poor bird had to be exhausted, and it was evident that it wasn't going
to find its way out by itself.

Using my hand, I carefully guided the hummingbird out into the middle
of the garage, thinking it would have no trouble finding an exit with
the garage door wide open. The bird quickly found a resting spot, but
when it tried to leave, it once again headed upward, banging itself
into the ceiling over and over. Could it not see the wide open door
with freedom just a few feet away? Why was it intent on searching for
an escape route straight up? Finally, with a little assistance from my
son, the bird made its way outside.

We try again and again without finding the happiness we crave!

I couldn't help but think how much like that hummingbird we all are.
The difference is that our search is for happiness and the "meaning of
life." We search in all the wrong places over and over again, looking
to material goods or immorality or addictive substances, all without
success. And instead of seeing the wide open door that God has
provided, we continue to painfully beat our heads in frustration.

We try again and again without finding the happiness we crave, so we
try even harder. We work longer hours to collect more "stuff"; we
sample something a little bit stronger. Why are we so blind that we
cannot see what God has made available? He wants us to find the freedom
of living for Him. Time and again, He gently nudges us in the right
direction. But we're so blind (or stubborn?).

"In the Lord I take refuge ... Flee as a bird to your mountain" (Psalm
11:1 NASB).

Lord, please open our eyes. Help us to see the frustration of our
attempts to seek happiness apart from you. Help us to see the need to
yield ourselves to your nudges as you seek to move us in the right
direction. Thank you for the blessings that you have made so richly
available and that you desire for us to enjoy. In Jesus' name, amen.

Morning & Evening -- Genesis 49:24 and Nahum 1:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, February 22, 2008

MORNING:

"His bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were
made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob."
-- Genesis 49:24

That strength which God gives to his Josephs is real strength; it is
not a boasted valour, a fiction, a thing of which men talk, but which
ends in smoke; it is true-divine strength. Why does Joseph stand
against temptation? Because God gives him aid. There is nought that we
can do without the power of God. All true strength comes from "the
mighty God of Jacob." Notice in what a blessedly familiar way God gives
this strength to Joseph-"The arms of his hands were made strong by the
hands of the mighty God of Jacob." Thus God is represented as putting
his hands on Joseph's hands, placing his arms on Joseph's arms. Like as
a father teaches his children, so the Lord teaches them that fear him.
He puts his arms upon them. Marvellous condescension! God Almighty,
Eternal, Omnipotent, stoops from his throne and lays his hand upon the
child's hand, stretching his arm upon the arm of Joseph, that he may be
made strong! This strength was also covenant strength, for it is
ascribed to "the mighty God of Jacob." Now, wherever you read of the
God of Jacob in the Bible, you should remember the covenant with Jacob.
Christians love to think of God's covenant. All the power, all the
grace, all the blessings, all the mercies, all the comforts, all the
things we have, flow to us from the well-head, through the covenant. If
there were no covenant, then we should fail indeed; for all grace
proceeds from it, as light and heat from the sun. No angels ascend or
descend, save upon that ladder which Jacob saw, at the top of which
stood a covenant God. Christian, it may be that the archers have sorely
grieved you, and shot at you, and wounded you, but still your bow
abides in strength; be sure, then, to ascribe all the glory to Jacob's
God.

EVENING:

"The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power."
-- Nahum 1:3

Jehovah "is slow to anger." When mercy cometh into the world she
driveth winged steeds; the axles of her chariot-wheels are red hot with
speed; but when wrath goeth forth, it toileth on with tardy footsteps,
for God taketh no pleasure in the sinner's death. God's rod of mercy is
ever in his hands outstretched; his sword of justice is in its
scabbard, held down by that pierced hand of love which bled for the
sins of men. "The Lord is slow to anger," because he is GREAT IN POWER.
He is truly great in power who hath power over himself. When God's
power doth restrain himself, then it is power indeed: the power that
binds omnipotence is omnipotence surpassed. A man who has a strong mind
can bear to be insulted long, and only resents the wrong when a sense
of right demands his action. The weak mind is irritated at a little:
the strong mind bears it like a rock which moveth not, though a
thousand breakers dash upon it, and cast their pitiful malice in spray
upon its summit. God marketh his enemies, and yet he bestirs not
himself, but holdeth in his anger. If he were less divine than he is,
he would long ere this have sent forth the whole of his thunders, and
emptied the magazines of heaven; he would long ere this have blasted
the earth with the wondrous fires of its lower regions, and man would
have been utterly destroyed; but the greatness of his power brings us
mercy. Dear reader, what is your state this evening? Can you by humble
faith look to Jesus, and say, "My substitute, thou art my rock, my
trust"? Then, beloved, be not afraid of God's power; for by faith you
have fled to Christ for refuge, the power of God need no more terrify
you, than the shield and sword of the warrior need terrify those whom
he loves. Rather rejoice that he who is "great in power" is your Father
and Friend.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Discipline Of Spiritual Tenacity"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 22, 2008

THE DISCIPLINE OF SPIRITUAL TENACITY

Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalms 46:10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ps+46:10&sr=1

Tenacity is more than endurance, it is endurance combined with the
absolute certainty that what we are looking for is going to
transpire. Tenacity is more than hanging on, which may be but the
weakness of being too afraid to fall off. Tenacity is the supreme
effort of a man refusing to believe that his hero is going to be
conquered. The greatest fear a man has is not that he will be damned,
but that Jesus Christ will be worsted, that the things He stood for -
love and justice and forgiveness and kindness among men - will not
win out in the end; the things He stands for look like
will-o'-the-wisps. Then comes the call to spiritual tenacity, not to
hang on and do nothing, but to work deliberately on the certainty
that God is not going to be worsted.

If our hopes are being disappointed just now, it means that they are
being purified. There is nothing noble the human mind has ever hoped
for or dreamed of that will not be fulfilled. One of the greatest
strains in life is the strain of waiting for God. "Because thou hast
kept the word of my patience."

Remain spiritually tenacious.

Praying with Paul : "Authority"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

AUTHORITY

Romans 13:1-7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+13:1-7

Dear Father, from whom all power comes,

Help me to show proper respect for the duly constituted authority
of government. Help me to do what is good, that I may receive the
approval of those who serve you for the enforcement of good order.

Teach me to be subject, not only to avoid the punishment of the
state and to avoid your wrath, but also for the sake of my own
conscience.

Give me the integrity to pay taxes to whom taxes are due, to give
revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due,
honor to whom honor is due.

May my subjection to proper human authority reflect my subjection
to your authority. Don't let me resist your will and incur judgment
from you.

In the name of Jesus, who has all authority, I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- I'm the Stronger Man -- Mark 3:22-27

I'm the Stronger Man

And the teachers of the law from Jerusalem said, "Beelzebul
(the devil) is living inside him (Jesus)! He uses power from
the ruler of demons to force demons out of people." So Jesus
called them together and talked to them using some stories.
Jesus said, "Satan will not force his own demons out of
people. A kingdom that fights against itself cannot continue.
And a family that is divided cannot succeed. And if Satan is
against himself and fights against his own people, then he
cannot continue. That would be the end of Satan. If a person
wants to enter a strong man's house and steal his things,
first the person must tie the strong man. Then the person can
steal the things from the strong man's house.

-- Mark 3:22-27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus makes it clear that his ability to cast out demons comes from one
source: he is more powerful than the demons could ever imagine him to
be. They can't stand up to his presence and power. Jesus is stronger
than demons and demonstrates it again and again.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I trust in Jesus' power to save from all forms of evil, sin,
and bondage. I open my heart to let him reign over my emotions and
desires. I open my mind so that he can purify, redeem, and control my
thoughts. I open my soul so that he can rule in every area of my being.
Thank you for sending your Son as my Savior, my Lord, and my Almighty
King. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
