Replacing the Old Passover with the New

Replacing the Old Passover with the New
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 22:7 And the day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the
passover had to be sacrificed (15) And He said to them, With
desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I
suffer, (16) For I tell you that I shall by no means eat it
until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. (19) And He took a
loaf and gave thanks, and He broke it and gave it to them,
saying, This is My body which is being given for you; do this
in remembrance of Me. (20) And similarly the cup after they had
dined, saying, This cup is the new covenant established in My
blood, which is being poured out for you
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 22:7-23 the Man-Savior instituted His supper as a
replacement of the Old Testament Passover. In the Old Testament
the Passover was a great matter, a matter that may be
considered equal to God's creation. In the Old Testament we
first have the record of God's creation. Then we see that the
man created by God fell and eventually went down into Egypt.
When God was about to save His people from bondage in Egypt, He
ordained the feast of Passover. The Passover was the time when
God's people were saved and brought back to their right, which
had been lost. The observance of the Passover lasted for more
than fifteen hundred years, from the time of Exodus 12 until
the night in which the Man-Savior had the last Passover with
His disciples.

Luke 22:7-23 is a crucial section of the Word, for it marks the
ending of the Old Testament Passover. Here we see that the Man-
Savior instituted His supper, the Lord's table, to replace the
Old Testament Passover. From this we see that the night in
which the Lord instituted His supper was a time of transition.
A transition was taking place from the Old Testament Passover
to the New Testament supper of the Lord. This is matter of
great importance.

Luke 22:7 speaks of the day on which the Passover was
sacrificed. In the Jewish calendar, which was according to
their Scripture, a day began with the evening (Gen. 1:5). In
the night of the last Passover day, the Man-Savior first ate
the Passover feast with His disciples and then instituted His
supper for them. Following that, He went with the disciples to
the Garden of Gethsemane at the Mount of Olives. There He was
arrested and brought to the high priest, where He was judged by
the Sanhedrin late in the night. In the morning of the same
day, He was delivered to Pilate to be judged by him and was
sentenced to death. Then He was brought to Golgotha and
crucified there at the third hour (today's nine o'clock) in the
morning, remaining on the cross until the ninth hour (today's
three o'clock) in the afternoon, for the fulfillment of the
type of the Passover.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Rose by Any Other Name Might Be ... Jim!, by Patrick D. Odum

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep, and my sheep know me --
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father -- and I lay down
my life for the sheep (John 10:14-15).

He sat in my living room and called me "Jim."

He lives in my neighborhood, an older man who I stop and talk with
every once in a while when I see him. We aren't close friends -- more
like acquaintances -- but I thought he at least knew my name.

He came by this week and wanted to talk for a few minutes, so I invited
him in and we sat down. And all through the conversation he called me
"Jim." At first I thought maybe it was a figure of speech I'd never
heard before, like a younger person might use "man" or "dude." But, no,
it wasn't. He thought Jim was my name.

He's one of those people, too, who use your name often in a
conversation: "So I just thought, Jim, that maybe I'd come by and talk
to you, Jim, and then maybe we could go to the gym, Jim ...." Well, you
get the idea. It's fine, as long as your name is Jim.

Mine isn't, so I got a little distracted, I admit. A lot of the time he
was talking, calling me "Jim" all along, I was thinking more about how
I could tell him my name wasn't Jim than about what he was saying. But
every time he called me "Jim," and it must have been at least 20 times,
correcting him got that much more awkward.

So I didn't say anything. When he asked for my phone number, though, I
gave him a card with my name clearly printed on it. He promptly shoved
it into his pocket without looking at it and headed for the front door.
"Good-bye, Jim," he said, smiling.

Later I returned a voice mail message that he left me. When he answered
and I told him who I was, he didn't recognize me. (I should have said,
"Hi, it's Jim.") Eventually, I got across who I was and he apologized
for calling me by the wrong name. And, lest you get the wrong idea, it
was never that big a deal anyway.

But it is nice when someone knows your name.

I have the feeling, though, that life has become more impersonal in the
last half a century or so. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think knowing people
by name means much less to us than it used to. How many of your
neighbors do you know by name, for example? Do you know the names of
your children's friends' parents? What about the names of the
proprietors of the shops you frequent (assuming they aren't all
subsidiaries of huge, multinational corporations)? Your insurance
agent? The new people at church? (At our church, people seem to stay
"new" for a decade or more.) There are lots of reasons for it:
technology, the diversification of previously homogeneous
neighborhoods, lack of time, distrust. It feels, at least, like we know
fewer of the people in our lives by name than our parents did.

Maybe that's why the whole idea of God knowing me by name excites me.
"I know you by name," he assured Moses. "I have summoned you by name,
you are mine," he reassured his people through Isaiah. And then there's
Jesus, assuring the people whom God has placed under his care and
protection that they are much more to him than just one more
frightened, confused face in the flock. "I know my sheep and my sheep
know me" -- Jesus chooses to have the same kind of intimate,
knowing-and-known relationship with us as he has with the Father.

Whether or not anyone else knows your name, or cares to, God does.

Simply because he can't forget you!

I don't know, maybe that's easy for you to believe. Maybe that's
toddler Sunday-School kind of stuff -- "Jesus loves me, this I know,
for the Bible tells me so." Maybe you've never had any trouble
believing that God knows you by name. If so, count your blessings, and
don't forget to be thankful for God's amazing, unexpected love.

But maybe it is hard for you to believe. Maybe there aren't too many
people who care to know your name. Maybe you feel as though you go
through life like a ghost, neither touching nor being touched. You
didn't necessarily choose that life, but there it is all the same.
Maybe you go for days, weeks, without hearing your name spoken with
warmth, affection, or familiarity.

If that describes you, then please take note: God knows your name, and
when he speaks it it's in a voice full of fondness, gentleness, and
joy. He "commands his angels concerning you," and when he sends them to
your side to minister to you, he speaks your name. His Spirit
identifies you as his child. In Jesus, he came for you. Your name
wasn't lost to him, those he came to save are not just a faceless mass
of people. Your face and your name were in his mind on the cross. "Why
would God care about my name?" you ask. Well, it's not because you're
such a prize. It's not because you have anything to offer him. It's not
because you've been good lately ... or because you share with the poor
.. or because you go to church regularly ... or even because you read
things like this. That's the way it works in the world, of course: you
have to do something, either positive or negative, to have your name
remembered. But, that isn't how it works with God.

God knows your name simply because he can't forget you. It's not in his
nature to forget his people. And even though there's no reason that the
Creator of the universe should know our names, he does. He chooses to
make and value us personally. And even if it seems to you that the
negatives connected to your name are far more memorable than the
positives, rest assured that God remembers your name with joy, love,
and grace.

It seems to me, then, that we ought to value our own names as much as
God does. We ought to recognize that, whatever the people around us may
think of us, God knows our names and we mean the world to him. And we
ought to guard our names with care, realizing how hurt and disappointed
God must be to see our names, the names of the people his Son died to
save, stained by sin, corruption, and baseness.

And it seems to me that we ought to value other names as much as God
does. We should make an effort to learn the names of those around us,
especially the least among us, and speak those names with reverence,
gentleness, love, and care. If God knows and values them, then so
should we -- whoever they might be. It just might mean the world to
someone that you took the time to know his or her name.

Take it from me -- Jim.

Morning & Evening -- 2 John 2 and Ruth 2:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, October 25, 2007

MORNING:

"For the truths sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with
us for ever."
-- 2 John 2

Once let the truth of God obtain an entrance into the human heart and
subdue the whole man unto itself, no power human or infernal can
dislodge it. We entertain it not as a guest but as the master of the
house-this is a Christian necessity, he is no Christian who doth not
thus believe. Those who feel the vital power of the gospel, and know
the might of the Holy Ghost as he opens, applies, and seals the Lord's
Word, would sooner be torn to pieces than be rent away from the gospel
of their salvation. What a thousand mercies are wrapped up in the
assurance that the truth will be with us for ever; will be our living
support, our dying comfort, our rising song, our eternal glory; this is
Christian privilege, without it our faith were little worth. Some
truths we outgrow and leave behind, for they are but rudiments and
lessons for beginners, but we cannot thus deal with Divine truth, for
though it is sweet food for babes, it is in the highest sense strong
meat for men. The truth that we are sinners is painfully with us to
humble and make us watchful; the more blessed truth that whosoever
believeth on the Lord Jesus shall be saved, abides with us as our hope
and joy. Experience, so far from loosening our hold of the doctrines of
grace, has knit us to them more and more firmly; our grounds and
motives for believing are now more strong, more numerous than ever, and
we have reason to expect that it will be so till in death we clasp the
Saviour in our arms.

Wherever this abiding love of truth can be discovered, we are bound to
exercise our love. No narrow circle can contain our gracious
sympathies, wide as the election of grace must be our communion of
heart. Much of error may be mingled with truth received, let us war
with the error but still love the brother for the measure of truth
which we see in him; above all let us love and spread the truth
ourselves.

EVENING:

"She gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was
to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was
of the kindred of Elimelech."
-- Ruth 2:3

Her hap was. Yes, it seemed nothing but an accident, but how divinely
was it overruled! Ruth had gone forth with her mother's blessing, under
the care of her mother's God, to humble but honourable toil, and the
providence of God was guiding her every step. Little did she know that
amid the sheaves she would find a husband, that he should make her the
joint owner of all those broad acres, and that she a poor foreigner
should become one of the progenitors of the great Messiah. God is very
good to those who trust in him, and often surprises them with unlooked
for blessings. Little do we know what may happen to us to-morrow, but
this sweet fact may cheer us, that no good thing shall be withheld.
Chance is banished from the faith of Christians, for they see the hand
of God in everything. The trivial events of to-day or to-morrow may
involve consequences of the highest importance. O Lord, deal as
graciously with thy servants as thou didst with Ruth.

How blessed would it be, if, in wandering in the field of meditation
to-night, our hap should be to light upon the place where our next
Kinsman will reveal himself to us! O Spirit of God, guide us to him. We
would sooner glean in his field than bear away the whole harvest from
any other. O for the footsteps of his flock, which may conduct us to
the green pastures where he dwells! This is a weary world when Jesus is
away-we could better do without sun and moon that without him-but how
divinely fair all things become in the glory of his presence! Our souls
know the virtue which dwells in Jesus, and can never be content without
him. We will wait in prayer this night until our hap shall be to light
on a part of the field belonging to Jesus wherein he will manifest
himself to us.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Eternal Crush Of Things"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 25, 2007

THE ETERNAL CRUSH OF THINGS

I am made all things to all men, that I might by all
means save some.

1 Corinthians 9:22

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+9:22&sr=1

A Christian worker has to learn how to be God's noble man or woman
amid a crowd of ignoble things. Never make this plea - If only I were
somewhere else! All God's men are ordinary men made extraordinary by
the matter He has given them. Unless we have the right matter in our
minds intellectually and in our hearts affectionately, we will be
hustled out of usefulness to God. We are not workers for God by
choice. Many people deliberately choose to be workers, but they have
no matter in them of God's almighty grace, no matter of His mighty
word. Paul's whole heart and mind and soul were taken up with the
great matter of what Jesus Christ came to do, he never lost sight of
that one thing. We have to face ourselves with the one central fact -
Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

"I have chosen you." Keep that note of greatness in your creed. It is
not that you have got God but that He has got you. Here, in this
College, God is at work, bending, breaking, moulding, doing just as
He chooses. Why He is doing it, we do not know; He is doing it for
one purpose only - that He may be able to say, This is My man, My
woman. We have to be in God's hand so that He can plant men on the
Rock as He has planted us.

Never choose to be a worker, but when God has put His call on you,
woe be to you if you turn to the right hand or to the left. He will
do with you what He never did with you before the call came He will
do with you what He is not doing with other people. Let Him have His
way.

Mustard Seed Thought: Sing Over

The Lord you God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great
delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over
you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 NIV

God takes delight in you! He rejoices over you with singing! Amen!

I love the glow in my sons' faces when I tell them how special
they are to me or when they hear me bragging on them to others. It seems
to bring such pleasure to them. I react to God the same way with joy in
my heart whenever I read this verse!

The idea that God delights in me is a fact too amazing for me to fully
comprehend! I don't know about you, but sometimes I don't feel very
delightful! Sometimes I wonder how I can even stand myself! Yet, God,
the Creator, Sustainer, Lord Almighty, the Great I AM, takes personal
delight in me! Not because of who I am, but because of who I am to Him.
His delight does not begin with me. The delight of the Lord in me begins
with Him. I am His creation. He delights in me because it pleases Him to
delight in me.

What a precious joy it is to stand at the bedside of an infant baby and sing
a lullaby to them as they sleep. (My boys are old enough now that they
don't really care for my singing, but there was a time when they
couldn't complain!) Oh, the love I felt for them as I rejoiced over
their birth with singing!

Picture this! God rejoices over you and me with singing! What a wonderful
testimony of the depth of our Father's love!

As you lay down to sleep tonight, listen carefully for your Father's
tender voice, as He takes great delight in you and rejoices over you
with His singing!

CHRIST'S GIFTS

Ephesians 4:8-13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+4:8-13

Dear Father, giver of lasting gifts,

Thank you for the gracious gifts bestowed by your Messiah on us
when he descended into the depths for us and ascended into the
heights to reign with you.

He gave us, his church, lasting gifts - apostles and prophets,
evangelists, and shepherd/teachers for the equipment of the saints,
for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

Thank you for these gifts given until we all attain the unity he
intends for us: faithful loyalty to Jesus, and full knowledge of
the Son of God himself - to mature manhood- so that we can attain
to the measure of the full stature of Christ himself.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

WJD! -- I've Obeyed All These? -- Luke 18:20-21

I've Obeyed All These?

"{But I will answer your question.} You know {God's}
commands: 'You must not do the sin of adultery, you must not
murder anyone, you must not steal anything, you must not tell
lies about other people, you must honor (respect) your father
and mother ...'" But the leader said, "I have obeyed all
these commands since I was a boy!"

-- Luke 18:20-21 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
While most of us can say we have never been guilty of murder, adultery,
or possibly even stealing, very few of us can honestly say that we have
never spoken false words in conversation and have always done what is
honorable toward our parents. Even in the best of lives, there is some
hedging of the truth or exaggeration that slips into conversation. Even
in the best of children there are weak moments or difficult spans of
time where we have done less than we could and should to honor our
folks. Jesus helps the young man confront the real issue in his life by
answering his question even though the basis of the question was
probably false. (In the previous verse he had asked Jesus a key
question about inheriting eternal life.) This man, however, claims to
be a law keeper deluxe! He has obeyed them all since he was young.
However, I'm not sure he was being fully honest with himself. I know I
couldn't say what he said and I have never met a person who could say
the same and be completely honest. How about you? Can you justify
yourself on the basis of keeping law? Are you trying to be righteous
simply by being better and obeying more completely than others? In the
discussion that follows, Jesus penetrates to the heart of the issue.
What would Jesus need to do to speak to your heart?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, the loving and eternal God, thank you for your grace that has
forgiven me of my sins. Forgive me of my moments of self-righteous
arrogance. Humble me gently till I can see that my righteousness is
based on Jesus' perfect gift and not my perfect obedience. Then, dear
Father, I ask by the power of your Holy Spirit, that you help conform
me more perfectly to the person you want me to be. In Jesus' name.
Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 John 3:8

\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 25, 2007

VERSE:
He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil
has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God
appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
-- 1 John 3:8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+3:8

THOUGHT:
Two simple truths: 1) The person who continues to live a life
caught up in sin is of the devil. 2) The Son of God came to destroy
all that the devil stands for. So, I guess the issue isn't as
complex as we sometimes make it, which leads me to a final thought:
Who are we going to side with in this heavenly war?

PRAYER:
Almighty and victorious King of the Ages, you are the only
rightful ruler of my heart. I pledge my allegiance to you. Please
help me as I seek to lay aside my struggles with sin and empower me
to live for you in unwavering loyalty. In the name of my Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
