A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought
to his steps. A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a
fool is hotheaded and reckless.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: How to Hear From God

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
How to Hear From God
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
I am the Good Shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.... John 10:14 NIV

Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He knows His flock!

I often get asked, How do I hear a word from God? Great question! I have often said that I know of few people, especially Christians, who wouldn't act immediately to obey God if they only knew for sure they were hearing from Him.

Dear friends, it is not meant for you to wander aimlessly. God does not intend for you to live your life without knowledge of His plan. (He may make you wait to see the whole picture, but you'll get it one step at a time.) God wants you to hear His voice.

Here are a few tips to help you in your journey to hear from God:

1. Get to know Him. That is the key to any relationship. How can you hear from God if you have never met Him? You can't meet Him apart from knowing His Son Jesus. If you have not yet invited Jesus to be your Savior, now is the time!

2. Listen. I know that sounds simple, but unless you are spending time trying to hear from God, it will never happen.

3. Learn His voice. When you first meet someone, it usually takes a few tries before you begin to recognize their voice over the telephone. If my Mom calls, she doesn't have to say, Ron, this is your Mother. I know her voice by now! (It's when she says Ronald that I know I'm in trouble.)

4. Check it with scripture! If you have any doubt about what God is telling you, compare it to His word! God will never contradict Himself.

5. Obey! If God speaks to you, clearly, without question, and you know it complements what has already been written in His word, don't waste another second. Obey Him immediately. If you want your relationship to grow, you will need to establish early on that you will follow His will for your life.

6. Enjoy! Hearing from God is a great thing! It doesn't even matter as much what He says. The great miracle is that a holy, powerful and mighty God, the Creator, has spoken! That is an event!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Maybe It Isn't Dead Yet, by Rubel Shelly

We still give lip-service to sportsmanship, but it is hard to believe
we are very serious about it. Obscene salaries to professionals, grades
without attending classes to collegians, drug parties by Olympians,
late "confessions" by athletes caught using banned substances -- all
these combine to mock the idea that we really value teamwork,
sacrifice, fair play, and honest competition.

Then you hear about a high school basketball game and think that maybe,
just maybe, you are getting too cynical. Sportsmanship may not be dead
yet. As told by Tim Dahlberg, national sports columnist for AP, here is
what happened.

On a Saturday earlier this past month, when DeKalb (Ill.) High
School was to play Milwaukee (Wisc.) Madison, tragedy struck the
family of one of the players. The mother of Milwaukee Madison's
senior captain died at a local hospital. While Johntell Franklin
was taking his college ACT exam, his mother took a dramatic turn
for the worse after five years of battling cancer. With her son at
the hospital late that afternoon, the 39-year-old mother was
removed from life support.

Thought was given to canceling the game, but Franklin urged the
coach and his teammates to play. The game started late, and
Milwaukee Madison dressed out only eight players. There may not
have been a lot of heart or focus for them.

"It was the right thing to do."

Early in the second quarter, Coach Womack saw his captain come into
the gym to cheer on his teammates. He called a timeout, went over
to give his grieving player a hug. So did his teammates and scores
of their fans. "We got back to playing the game, and I asked if he
wanted to come and sit on the bench," Coach Womack said later. Came
the reply: "No. I want to play!" Although it would mean a technical
foul against his team in what was then a close game, Womack thought
it was a price worth paying. So he had the young man suit up and
prepare to play.

Since Johntell Franklin had not been on the pre-game roster,
putting him in meant two free throws for DeKalb. When that was
explained to DeKalb's Coach Dave Rohlman, he offered to forgo the
free throws and let Franklin play. But five minutes or so of
argument got nowhere with the refs.

Coach Rohlman huddled his team and explained what was going on.
Then he asked for a volunteer to shoot the free throws. His team's
captain, Darius McNeal, raised his hand. He went to the line. The
first shot went about two feet and landed with a thud. The second
just rolled out of his hand. The Milwaukee Madison players faced
their opponent's bench and began applauding. It was only seconds
before everyone else in the stands joined the cheering. "I did it
for the guy who lost his mom," McNeal told a reporter later. "It
was the right thing to do."

DeKalb eventually lost the game. Who cares? What those boys will recall
for the rest of their lives is an act of sportsmanship they shared on
that special night.

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 30:6 and Job 14:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

MORNING:

"In my prosperity I said I shall never be moved."
-- Psalms 30:6

"Moab settled on his lees, he hath not been emptied from vessel to
vessel." Give a man wealth; let his ships bring home continually rich
freights; let the winds and waves appear to be his servants to bear his
vessels across the bosom of the mighty deep; let his lands yield
abundantly: let the weather be propitious to his crops; let
uninterrupted success attend him; let him stand among men as a
successful merchant; let him enjoy continued health; allow him with
braced nerve and brilliant eye to march through the world, and live
happily; give him the buoyant spirit; let him have the song perpetually
on his lips; let his eye be ever sparkling with joy-and the natural
consequence of such an easy state to any man, let him be the best
Christian who ever breathed, will be presumption; even David said, "I
shall never be moved;" and we are not better than David, nor half so
good. Brother, beware of the smooth places of the way; if you are
treading them, or if the way be rough, thank God for it. If God should
always rock us in the cradle of prosperity; if we were always dandled
on the knees of fortune; if we had not some stain on the alabaster
pillar; if there were not a few clouds in the sky; if we had not some
bitter drops in the wine of this life, we should become intoxicated
with pleasure, we should dream "we stand;" and stand we should, but it
would be upon a pinnacle; like the man asleep upon the mast, each
moment we should be in jeopardy.

We bless God, then, for our afflictions; we thank him for our changes;
we extol his name for losses of property; for we feel that had he not
chastened us thus, we might have become too secure. Continued worldly
prosperity is a fiery trial.

"Afflictions, though they seem severe,
In mercy oft are sent."

EVENING:

"Man ... is of few days, and full of trouble."
-- Job 14:1

It may be of great service to us, before we fall asleep, to remember
this mournful fact, for it may lead us to set loose by earthly things.
There is nothing very pleasant in the recollection that we are not
above the shafts of adversity, but it may humble us and prevent our
boasting like the Psalmist in our morning's portion. "My mountain
standeth firm: I shall never be moved." It may stay us from taking too
deep root in this soil from which we are so soon to be transplanted
into the heavenly garden. Let us recollect the frail tenure upon which
we hold our temporal mercies. If we would remember that all the trees
of earth are marked for the woodman's axe, we should not be so ready to
build our nests in them. We should love, but we should love with the
love which expects death, and which reckons upon separations. Our dear
relations are but loaned to us, and the hour when we must return them
to the lender's hand may be even at the door. The like is certainly
true of our worldly goods. Do not riches take to themselves wings and
fly away? Our health is equally precarious. Frail flowers of the field,
we must not reckon upon blooming for ever. There is a time appointed
for weakness and sickness, when we shall have to glorify God by
suffering, and not by earnest activity. There is no single point in
which we can hope to escape from the sharp arrows of affliction; out of
our few days there is not one secure from sorrow. Man's life is a cask
full of bitter wine; he who looks for joy in it had better seek for
honey in an ocean of brine. Beloved reader, set not your affections
upon things of earth: but seek those things which are above, for here
the moth devoureth, and the thief breaketh through, but there all joys
are perpetual and eternal. The path of trouble is the way home. Lord,
make this thought a pillow for many a weary head!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Have A Message And Be One"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 10, 2009

HAVE A MESSAGE AND BE ONE

Preach the word.

2 Timothy 4:2
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2ti+4:2&sr=1

We are not saved to be "channels only," but to be sons and daughters
of God. We are not turned into spiritual mediums, but into spiritual
messengers; the message must be part of ourselves. The Son of God was
His own message, His words were spirit and life; and as His disciples
our lives must be the sacrament of our message. The natural heart
will do any amount of serving, but it takes the heart broken by
conviction of sin, and baptized by the Holy Ghost, and crumpled into
the purpose of God before the life becomes the sacrament of its
message.

There is a difference between giving a testimony and preaching. A
preacher is one who has realized the call of God and is determined to
use his every power to proclaim God's truth. God takes us out of our
own ideas for our lives and we are "batter'd to shape and use," as
the disciples were after Pentecost. Pentecost did not teach the
disciples any thing; it made them the incarnation of what they
preached - "Ye shall be witnesses unto Me."

Let God have perfect liberty when you speak. Before God's message can
liberate other souls, the liberation must be real in you. Gather your
material, and set it alight when you speak.

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

UNITED IN CHRIST

1 Corinthians 1:10-13
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+1:10-13

Dear Father, the one and only God of your one holy people,

Help me never to be part of any division within the body of
Christ. Let me be perfectly united in mind and heart with all who
follow you. Help me not be some kind of -ite, -ist, or -anian. Keep
me from misplacing my loyalties with this man or that!

Christ, of whom I am part, is not divided. He is of one mind. So
let me and all his people be together and in agreement. Let us be
like-minded, having the same love, one in spirit and purpose.

Help us do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in
humility help us count each other better than ourselves. Let us
look out for the interests of each other, not just our own.

In the name of Jesus Christ, the Source of our unity and
salvation, I ask these things. Amen.

WJD! -- Few Words are Needed -- Matthew 6:7-8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/

Few Words are Needed

"And when you pray, don't be like those people that don't
know God. They continue saying things that mean nothing.
Don't pray like that. They think that God will hear them
because of the many things they say. Don't be like those
people. Your Father knows the things you need before you ask
him."

-- Matthew 6:7-8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The Stoic Philosopher Seneca made fun of the pagans of his day
"fatiguing the gods" with their prayers. Jesus warns his followers not
to follow the same course. Senseless babbling and the heaping up of
repetitious phrases do not win us an audience with God. Prayer is not
about magic formulas or fancy speech. Prayer is about our confidence in
the Father's knowing us and responding to our needs. Under this
understanding, our words don't need to be special or effusive, just
heartfelt and genuine!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, thank you for hearing my simple words that
come from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for blessings. Please
forgive me for my sins and guard me from evil. Use me in astounding
ways that bring you glory! Empower me to do your will. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Galatians 5:22-23

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 10, 2009

VERSE:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law.
-- Galatians 5:22-23
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+5:22-23+

THOUGHT:
When the Spirit is alive in our hearts, the character of God
comes to life in us as the Spirit works to conform us ever more
closely to the image and the character of Christ (2 Cor. 3:18).

PRAYER:
Thank you, dear Father, for your Spirit within me. I consciously
yield my will and heart to your Spirit's transforming control in my
life. Please produce in me the fruit that pleases you and brings
you glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
