Knowing God's Measure of Grace (2)

you may be filled unto all the fullness of God. (20) But to Him who is able
to do superabundantly above all that we ask or think...

[God's operation according to His measure of grace is also] seen in the
return of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). When he was a long way off
from home and before he met his father, he was prepared to go back home
to serve as a servant. But when he reached his home, his father did not ask
him to be a servant. Instead, he asked his slaves to bring out the best robe
and to put it on him. He put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet and
slaughtered the fattened calf. They ate and were merry because the son who
was dead had come to life again; he was lost but had been found. From these
verses we see again that God does not accomplish His salvation according to
a sinner's thought but according to His own thought.
Mark 2 speaks of four men who took a paralytic to the Lord Jesus. When
they were unable to bring him to the Lord because of the crowd, they
removed the roof where the Lord was and lowered the bed on which the
paralytic was lying, hoping that the Lord Jesus would heal the paralytic and
make him rise and walk. But the Lord Jesus said, "Child, your sins are
forgiven" (v. 5). The Lord Jesus not only healed him but also forgave him of
his sins. This also tells us that God works to His own satisfaction. All we
have to do is go to God and ask. It does not matter whether we have asked
enough. God always works to His own satisfaction, not to the sinner's
satisfaction.

Lord, Help Me Look Ahead, by Tom Norvell
Lord, help me look ahead. It's time to look ahead. Help me to turn my
attention away from the things that have already passed and direct my
focus toward the things that are yet to be. I've spent too much time
looking back. I have spent too much time dwelling on the things that I
cannot change. I have spent too little time on the opportunities that
lay ahead.
Lord, help me to enjoy the memories I have of my children as they have
grown and moved toward independence. But, help me not to dwell so much
on "those days" that I miss "these days" we are living now, and enable
me to enjoy them to the fullest.
Lord, help me never forget the times and the ways you have delivered me
in the past, but do not allow me to think that Your days of deliverance
are over, and help me never doubt that You will continue to deliver me
in the future.
Lord, help me stop dwelling on the mistakes of the past to such an
extent that I am paralyzed with fear of making another mistake.
Lord, remind me that my sins have been forgiven and that I am free to
live a life of victory with confidence and boldness in the future.
Lord, thank You for enabling me to accomplish some good things in my
life, help me to not be satisfied with those things already
accomplished, and help me to continue to rely on You for everything I
endeavor to accomplish in the future.
Lord, help us as Your people, to let go of the past, to admit where we
have failed, rejoice where we have succeeded, and move on toward what
You have planned for the future.
Lord, I have wasted too much time dwelling on the past.
Lord, help us to take responsibility for our oversights of the past,
learn from them, and venture into the future without guilt, or regrets,
and be fully determined to do a better job as Your ambassadors to the
world in the future.
Lord, You have brought us through tragedy and triumph. You have never
failed us. We have every reason to believe that our future with You
will be glorious. So, let us live today to the fullest and with
confidence and with hope.
Consider the example of Moses:
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the
son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the
people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short
time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater
value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to
his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger;
he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. By faith he kept
the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of
the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel (Hebrews
11:24-28 NIV).
Consider the words of Paul:
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been
made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ
Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to
have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is
behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the
goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in
Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14 NIV).
Lord, I have wasted too much time dwelling on the past. We have wasted
too much time dwelling on the past. Help me, and help us, to stop
looking back and look ahead to what You have planned.

MORNING:
"Exceeding great and precious promises."

If you would know experimentally the preciousness of the promises, and
enjoy them in your own heart, meditate much upon them. There are
promises which are like grapes in the wine-press; if you will tread
them the juice will flow. Thinking over the hallowed words will often
be the prelude to their fulfilment. While you are musing upon them, the
boon which you are seeking will insensibly come to you. Many a
Christian who has thirsted for the promise has found the favour which
it ensured gently distilling into his soul even while he has been
considering the divine record; and he has rejoiced that ever he was led
to lay the promise near his heart.
But besides meditating upon the promises, seek in thy soul to receive
them as being the very words of God. Speak to thy soul thus, "If I were
dealing with a man's promise, I should carefully consider the ability
and the character of the man who had covenanted with me. So with the
promise of God; my eye must not be so much fixed upon the greatness of
the mercy-that may stagger me; as upon the greatness of the
promiser-that will cheer me. My soul, it is God, even thy God, God that
cannot lie, who speaks to thee. This word of his which thou art now
considering is as true as his own existence. He is a God unchangeable.
He has not altered the thing which has gone out of his mouth, nor
called back one single consolatory sentence. Nor doth he lack any
power; it is the God that made the heavens and the earth who has spoken
thus. Nor can he fail in wisdom as to the time when he will bestow the
favours, for he knoweth when it is best to give and when better to
withhold. Therefore, seeing that it is the word of a God so true, so
immutable, so powerful, so wise, I will and must believe the promise."
If we thus meditate upon the promises, and consider the Promiser, we
shall experience their sweetness, and obtain their fulfilment.

Most blessed challenge! How unanswerable it is! Every sin of the elect
was laid upon the great Champion of our salvation, and by the atonement
carried away. There is no sin in God's book against his people: he
seeth no sin in Jacob, neither iniquity in Israel; they are justified
in Christ for ever. When the guilt of sin was taken away, the
punishment of sin was removed. For the Christian there is no stroke
from God's angry hand-nay, not so much as a single frown of punitive
justice. The believer may be chastised by his Father, but God the Judge
has nothing to say to the Christian, except "I have absolved thee: thou
art acquitted." For the Christian there is no penal death in this
world, much less any second death. He is completely freed from all the
punishment as well as the guilt of sin, and the power of sin is removed
too. It may stand in our way, and agitate us with perpetual warfare;
but sin is a conquered foe to every soul in union with Jesus. There is
no sin which a Christian cannot overcome if he will only rely upon his
God to do it. They who wear the white robe in heaven overcame through
the blood of the Lamb, and we may do the same. No lust is too mighty,
no besetting sin too strongly entrenched; we can overcome through the
power of Christ. Do believe it, Christian, that thy sin is a condemned
thing. It may kick and struggle, but it is doomed to die. God has
written condemnation across its brow. Christ has crucified it, "nailing
it to his cross." Go now and mortify it, and the Lord help you to live
to his praise, for sin with all its guilt, shame, and fear, is gone.

And, O my soul, with wonder view,
For sins to come here's pardon too."

THE WAY TO KNOW

The golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect, but
obedience. If a man wants scientific knowledge, intellectual
curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight into what Jesus
Christ teaches, he can only get it by obedience. If things are dark
to me, then I may be sure there is something I will not do.
Intellectual darkness comes through ignorance; spiritual darkness
comes because of something I do not intend to obey.
No man ever receives a word from God without instantly being put to
the test over it. We disobey and then wonder why we don't go on
spiritually. 'If when you come to the altar,' said Jesus, 'there you
remember your brother hath ought against you...don't say another word
to Me, but first go and put that thing right.' The teaching of Jesus
hits us where we live. We cannot stand as humbugs before Him for one
second. He educates us down to the scruple. The Spirit of God
unearths the spirit of self-vindication; He makes us sensitive to
things we never thought of before.
When Jesus brings a thing home by His word, don't shirk it. If you
do, you will become a religious humbug. Watch the things you shrug
your shoulders over, and you will know why you do not go on
spiritually. First go - at the risk of being thought fanatical you
must obey what God tells you.

A Favor Please
Then James and John, sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus. They
said, "Teacher, we want to ask you to do something for us."
Jesus asked, "What do you want me to do for you?" The sons
answered, "You will have glory {in your kingdom}. Let one of
us sit at your right, and let one of us sit at your left."

KEY THOUGHT:
Sometimes the Scriptures are just too honest. I'm being a little
sarcastic ... but just a little. The people we see, even those that are
potentially our heroes, are so much like us. Their feet of clay help
make the grace of Jesus real and accessible. Jesus' closest followers
reveal that they don't really understand what he has just said to them
and what his life, ministry, and purpose are supposed to be. They've
told Jesus a few verses earlier what they gave up to follow him. They
seem to ignore what he has just told them in the previous verse that he
will pay a horrible price for them. They can only think of glory. So
while they courageously overcome their fear and dread to follow him to
Jerusalem, they also have a great desire to get the big pay off from
their association with him. Of course, the real question is whether or
not they follow him just because he is Lord and worthy of their
allegiance. But then, their lack of understanding and their greed
become the opportunity for us to ask ourselves the same question. Will
we follow Jesus even if the costs are high and the appearances suggest
that there is no earthly pay off? Hmm? Ouch! God help me.
TODAY'S PRAYER:
O glorious Father, please forgive my selfishness. I confess that I want
to be treated favorably and be blessed for following you. Please give
me the courage to follow no matter the cost in this life as I reach in
faith for what is life indeed! In Jesus' name. Amen.

THOUGHT:
God in human flesh is how John 1:14 describes Jesus, God's
ultimate message (cf. Heb. 1:1-3). Of course this is a mystery that
we cannot fully fathom. It is beyond our human experience and
limited reality. Jesus' critics want to easily characterize him as
someone who cannot be Messiah because they think they know where he
is from. They are wrong. They think he is from Nazareth and not
Bethlehem. We know better. They are even more wrong, because Jesus
isn't ultimately from Bethlehem; he is "from above." Jesus exhausts
our imagination and overflows our cup of wonder as we seek to
understand all that he is as our Savior, Christ the Lord.
PRAYER:
O Lord, forgive me for my limited vision of Jesus' glory. Enable
my heart's ability to find wonder, joy, grace, exhilaration, glory,
and awe in his power, his grace, his sacrifice, his victory, and
his love. To you, Father, and to the Christ, be all the glory and
honor that my heart can muster and my voice can proclaim. In Jesus'
name I offer you my praise! Amen.
