A Humble Sinner in Need of Propitiation

A Humble Sinner in Need of Propitiation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 18:9 And He told this parable also to certain ones who
trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised the
rest: (10) Two men went up to the temple to pray, the one a
Pharisee and the other a tax collector. (11) The Pharisee stood
and prayed these things to himself: God, I thank You that I am
not like the rest of men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even like this tax collector. (12) I fast twice a week; I give
a tenth of all that I get. (13) But the tax collector, standing
at a distance, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but
beat his breast, saying, God, be propitiated to me, the sinner!
(14) I tell you, This man went down to his house justified
rather than that one; for everyone who exalts himself shall be
humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In verses 10 through 14 the Lord tells a parable of two men who
"went up to the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, and the
other a tax collector" (v. 10). The Lord often used tax
collectors and Pharisees as examples. The Pharisee's word in
verse 11, where he thanks God that he is not like the rest of
men, does not sound like a prayer at all; instead, it sounds
like an accusation of others. Likewise, his word in verse 12
about fasting and paying tithes does not sound like a prayer,
but rather like an arrogant boast to God. Therefore, in his
prayer the Pharisee was accusing others and boasting to God.

In verse 13 we see that the despised, accused, and condemned
tax collector prayed in the way of humbling himself to the
uttermost... His prayer implies the need of a Redeemer and also
the need of propitiation. The tax collector realized how his
sinfulness offended God. Hence, he asked God to be propitiated,
to be appeased toward him by a propitiation, so that God may be
merciful and gracious to him. This humble person realized that
he was nothing but a sinner. Because he offered up a prayer
that was based upon God's propitiation, he "went down to his
house justified" (v. 14).

Actually, to repent and confess our sins is to humble
ourselves. All saved ones are those who have been humbled and
subdued. When I was young, I was proud and arrogant, never
willing to admit that I was wrong. But one day the Spirit
caught me, and I was convinced, humbled, and subdued. It seemed
to me that no one was as sinful as I was. My attitude was the
exact opposite of what it had been before. I can testify from
experience that a saved person is a humble, subdued person. We
need to humble ourselves to such an extent that we consider
ourselves nobody and nothing

Quotemeal: "^WHAT God did makes sense. ..."

\ / QUOTEMEAL from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

^WHAT God did makes sense. It makes sense that Jesus would be
our sacrifice because a sacrifice was needed to justify man's
presence before God. ... However, WHY God did it is absolutely
absurd. When one leaves the method and examines the motive, the
carefully stacked blocks of logic begin to tumble. That type of
love isn't logical; it can't be neatly outlined in a sermon or
explained in a term paper. ... It IS inexplicable. It doesn't
have a drop of logic nor a thread of rationality. And yet, it is
that very irrationality that gives the gospel its greatest
defense. For only God could love like that.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Brevity of Life, by Tom Norvell

As the week begins consider this short verse from the Psalms:

"Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in
wisdom" (Psalm 90:12 NLT).

Another version says it:

"Teach us to use wisely all the time we have" (CEV).

Still another reads: "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may
gain a heart of wisdom" (NIV).

You may have never prayed that simple prayer, but chances are the
lesson is being taught in various ways every day in your community.

You get word that a classmate from high school has just had a heart
attack and died. He was your age.

Within weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer you are attending the
funeral of a co-worker. He went so fast.

A teenager is killed going home from football practice. He was the star
of the team.

A mother of three small children is broadsided by a semi in the middle
of the day. She was on her way to pick up her kids from school.

The news reported that the babysitter had left the three-year old alone
on the deck to check on something she had left on the stove. When she
looked up he was floating in the pool.

A freak accident claimed the life of a friend. You were with him
yesterday. You talked with him on the phone last night. Now he is gone.

So, how do we do it?

The Psalm says, "Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we
may grow in wisdom." "Teach us to use wisely all the time we have."

If we knew how much time we had, we'd use it wisely ... at least the
latter part of it. Wouldn't we? Perhaps that is the point.

So, how do we do it?

The Psalmist may give us the answer at the beginning and at the end of
the Psalm:

Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! Before
the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the
world, from beginning to end, you are God (Psalm 90:1-2 NLT).

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work
of our hands for us -- yes, establish the work of our hands (Psalm
90:17 NIV).

When we realize that the Lord is our home and that God is God, we can
see our days more clearly. When we allow the Lord to establish the work
of our hands, we can see our days more clearly. With this knowledge we
can appreciate and remember that life is brief, that things can change
in a split second. Since we don't know how much time we have, we must
learn to use what we have wisely. Every day live wisely. Every moment
live fully. Take advantage of all opportunities.

Let's start right now. We don't have much time.

Morning & Evening -- Philippians 3:8 and Romans 12:2

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, October 14, 2007

MORNING:

"I count all things but loss for the excellency of the
knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord."
-- Philippians 3:8

Spiritual knowledge of Christ will be a personal knowledge. I cannot
know Jesus through another person's acquaintance with him. No, I must
know him myself; I must know him on my own account. It will be an
intelligent knowledge-I must know him, not as the visionary dreams of
him, but as the Word reveals him. I must know his natures, divine and
human. I must know his offices-his attributes-his works-his shame-his
glory. I must meditate upon him until I "comprehend with all saints
what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and know the
love of Christ, which passeth knowledge." It will be an affectionate
knowledge of him; indeed, if I know him at all, I must love him. An
ounce of heart knowledge is worth a ton of head learning. Our knowledge
of him will be a satisfying knowledge. When I know my Saviour, my mind
will be full to the brim-I shall feel that I have that which my spirit
panted after. "This is that bread whereof if a man eat he shall never
hunger." At the same time it will be an exciting knowledge; the more I
know of my Beloved, the more I shall want to know. The higher I climb
the loftier will be the summits which invite my eager footsteps. I
shall want the more as I get the more. Like the miser's treasure, my
gold will make me covet more. To conclude; this knowledge of Christ
Jesus will be a most happy one; in fact, so elevating, that sometimes
it will completely bear me up above all trials, and doubts, and
sorrows; and it will, while I enjoy it, make me something more than
"Man that is born of woman, who is of few days, and full of trouble";
for it will fling about me the immortality of the ever living Saviour,
and gird me with the golden girdle of his eternal joy. Come, my soul,
sit at Jesus's feet and learn of him all this day.

EVENING:

"And be not conformed to this world."
-- Romans 12:2

If a Christian can by possibility be saved while he conforms to this
world, at any rate it must be so as by fire. Such a bare salvation is
almost as much to be dreaded as desired. Reader, would you wish to
leave this world in the darkness of a desponding death bed, and enter
heaven as a shipwrecked mariner climbs the rocks of his native country?
then be worldly; be mixed up with Mammonites, and refuse to go without
the camp bearing Christ's reproach. But would you have a heaven below
as well as a heaven above? Would you comprehend with all saints what
are the heights and depths, and know the love of Christ which passeth
knowledge? Would you receive an abundant entrance into the joy of your
Lord? Then come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, and touch
not the unclean thing. Would you attain the full assurance of faith?
you cannot gain it while you commune with sinners. Would you flame with
vehement love? Your love will be damped by the drenchings of godless
society. You cannot become a great Christian-you may be a babe in
grace, but you never can be a perfect man in Christ Jesus while you
yield yourself to the worldly maxims and modes of business of men of
the world. It is ill for an heir of heaven to be a great friend with
the heirs of hell. It has a bad look when a courtier is too intimate
with his king's enemies. Even small inconsistencies are dangerous.
Little thorns make great blisters, little moths destroy fine garments,
and little frivolities and little rogueries will rob religion of a
thousand joys. O professor, too little separated from sinners, you know
not what you lose by your conformity to the world. It cuts the tendons
of your strength, and makes you creep where you ought to run. Then, for
your own comfort's sake, and for the sake of your growth in grace, if
you be a Christian, be a Christian, and be a marked and distinct one.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Key To The Missionary"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 14, 2007

THE KEY TO THE MISSIONARY

All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye
therefore, and teach all nations.

Matthew 28:18-20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+28:18-20&sr=1

The basis of missionary appeals is the authority of Jesus Christ, not
the needs of the heathen. We are apt to look upon Our Lord as One Who
assists us in our enterprises for God. Our Lord puts Himself as the
absolute sovereign supreme Lord over His disciples. He does not say
the heathen will be lost if we do not go; He simply says - "Go ye
therefore and teach all nations." Go on the revelation of My
sovereignty; teach and preach out of a living experience of Me.

"Then the eleven disciples went . . unto a mountain where Jesus had
appointed them." v. 16. If I want to know the universal sovereignty
of Christ, I must know Him for myself, and how to get alone with Him;
I must take time to worship the Being Whose Name I bear. "Come unto
Me" - that is the place to meet Jesus. Are you weary and heavy laden?
How many missionaries are! We banish those marvellous words of the
universal Sovereign of the world to the threshold of an
after-meeting; they are the words of Jesus to His disciples.

"Go ye therefore. . . ." Go simply means live. Acts 1:8 is the
description of how to go. Jesus did not say - Go into Jerusalem and
Judea and Samaria, but, "Ye shall be witnesses unto Me" in all these
places. He undertakes to establish the goings.

"If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you. . . " - that is the
way to keep going in our personal lives. Where we are placed is a
matter of indifference; God engineers the goings.

"None of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto
myself . . ." That is how to keep going till we're gone.

Praying with Paul : "Alive in Christ"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

ALIVE IN CHRIST

Ephesians 2:4-5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+2:4-5

Dear Father, ruler of heaven and earth,

When you raised up Christ, you raised me out of my dead state as
well. You set me on a throne of honor with Christ in the heavenly
places.

What you did showed the immeasurable riches of your grace even to
me - just as you showed your kindness to those called first -
through Christ!

Thank you for being so very, very gracious to me! Salvation by
grace just by trusting in you!

In the name of Jesus and by his authority I boldly ask you to make
of us the completely holy people that you intend as your
inheritance. Amen.

WJD! -- Not Business as Usual -- Luke 17:28-30

Not Business as Usual

"It will be the same as during the time of Lot when God
destroyed Sodom. Those people were eating, drinking, buying,
selling, planting, and building houses for themselves. The
people were doing these things even on the day when Lot left
town. Then fire and sulphur rained down from the sky and
killed them all. This is exactly how it will be when the Son
of Man comes again."

-- Luke 17:28-30 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Just as in the previous verses, Jesus warns again that people will not
be paying attention when he comes. They will have settled into their
ungodly lifestyles and will be totally surprised. For those not ready,
it will be a time of destruction. However, it will be a time of
celebration for those of us who are joyously anticipating his return.
Yet even for us, the potential of Jesus' coming today should help us
sharpen our focus and live with a special spiritual intensity. How
would your life be lived today, tomorrow, and all the tomorrows which
follow if each day you lived as if Jesus were returning that day?
That's how Jesus wants us to live each day.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy Father, God Almighty who controls the day of the Lord's return,
help me live with renewed intensity knowing that Jesus' return could
happen at any time, even today. In his name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Romans 6:11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 14, 2007

VERSE:
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God
in Christ Jesus.
-- Romans 6:11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+6:11

THOUGHT:
In baptism, we are united with Christ in his death (see Romans
6:1-14 for the background of this devotional meditation). Our old
sinful selves are crucified with Christ. We are no longer slaves to
sin. We are alive in Christ -- the one whom sin could not master
and death could not conquer. His life is now our life. His victory
is our victory. His future is our future. Let's set our hearts to
live based upon this certainty!

PRAYER:
Gracious Father, I find it incredible that you put all my past
sin in the grave of your crucified Son and have raised me up to new
life in him. Inspire me to find meaning, joy, and victory in Jesus.
Strengthen me with your Spirit and conform me more perfectly to my
Lord. Please empower me to live fully trusting that all of my sin
is dead, buried and gone. Please give me the confidence that my new
life is bound up with Jesus and his future. Jesus, I thank you for
this hope and offer this praise in your name. Amen.
