Today's Verse : 1 Thessalonians 5:16

VERSE:
Be joyful always.
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:16

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+5:16

THOUGHT:
Now wait just a minute. I have some pretty sorry days! Things
don't always go well for me! Some of my friends have abandoned me
at my worst possible moments. How can I be joyful ALWAYS? "Simple,
my child," the Father reminds me. "First, joy is more than always
feeling happy, but is instead, a deep abiding sense of being in
God's grace and purpose. Second, no matter where you are, no matter
how hopeless things may seem, your life is bound for glory -- my
glory!" In the light of these incredible truths, all other things
seem bland, out of touch, and insignificant.

PRAYER:
O LORD, please give me a clearer sense of your glory and
victory. Please empower my faith to trust the truth of your
conquest over hell. Please fill me with your Spirit and bring forth
your fruit in my life. Please fill my mouth with joyful praise for
all that you have done for me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: One Glimpse 4

And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 2 Peter 2:19 NIV

As we take one final look at Peter's last letter, in which he talks about his mountain top experience with Jesus, Peter advises us to heed his call, and believe his testimony. He invites us to experience the joy he has from experiencing a God whose glory outshines all other gods.

The light of the world is Jesus. One day, perhaps very soon, that glory will be revealed. When God gives that final word, the dead in Christ shall rise, then we who remain will be "caught up", raptured, to meet the Lord in the air, and we shall be changed! (1 Thessalonians 4)

Can I hear an Amen?

Peter had a privileged one day experience to see that glory revealed.

Jesus invited Peter, James and John to accompany Him to the mountain. There, before their eyes, Jesus transformed into His glorified state.

Peter didn't see too much of it, but it was enough that he wanted to stay there forever. It was worth giving up everything else just to be there.

Peter wants his readers to be a part of that kind of experience. He wants us to look forward to Heaven, just as he did after the day on the mountain. He says "you will do well to pay attention" not because there was anything in it for him, but because it will make your life easier. Peter, as he continued to face the challenges of life after Jesus was no longer with him, even when his life was being threatened by the anti-Christians, had a confidence which kept him going. He had seen what the future held. He had seen Moses and Elijah experiencing the joys of eternal life. He had seen Jesus in His glorified state. It was worth waiting for. He now had hope! He now had a destination!

Do you have hope? Do you know your final destination? If there is any doubt in your mind; if life's struggles are getting you down, get ask God for a small glimpse of Heaven. What's to come will be worth the wait!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Children on Thanksgiving, by Alan Smith

With today being Thanksgiving for those in the U.S., I thought you
might enjoy these excerpts from a book called "Then Some Other Things
Happened", a collection of short pieces about history written by eighth
graders and compiled by Bill Lawrence, a teacher and columnist.

The Pilgrams were a bunch of English wonderers who wanted to
worship as they wanted to. They excaped the Church of England and
came over here because they heard that American churches were
different.

The May Flower was the ship with which they came in. It didn't have
a bathroom on board so there was quite an oder. Priscillia Mullins
was the captain.

First the Pilgrams had gone to Holland but left when their children
started developing customs there. After a stopover at Williamsbug
when a large storm blew them off course they landed on a big,
slimey rock in Massatusetts. They spent the winter there.

Before they got off the ship even they drew up an agreement for the
people of Plymouth to agree on the voting for governors and
congressmen. They kept this hid in the May Flower Compact. Lord
Delaware was elected the first governor of Plymouth Rock.

A friendly Indian named Rhone Oak showed the Pilgrams how to plant
corn by putting it in the ground. Rhone Oak had been the first
Indian to come to America. He traveled around with Miles Standy and
translated language. He knew enough English to interupt.

Another interupter for the white man was Squanto, who was called
that because he was so short. Squanto drew up a declaration to give
the settlers freedom of goverment in the new land. The Pilgrams
gave the Indians thanks for all this and that's what started
Thanksgiving.

The Pilgrams then appointed Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
Abraham Lincoln later pronounced it and gave it to them and it soon
became a national holiday all around the world.

Let's remember why we are giving thanks!

These people always wore old shoes with a big buckel on the top of
them. The men wore pants that only came a little ways past the
knees and the girls wore funny bonets.

But if these people wouldn't had of come to America the United
States wouldn't be like it is today.

It's easy to forget the Source of all we enjoy.

Thanksgiving is a time for turkey (with all the trimmings), family
get-togethers, football, and pumpkin pie. More importantly, however, it
is a time to be reminded of how God has richly blessed us. "It's easy
to forget the Source of all we enjoy." Perhaps we would do well to be
reminded of the warning given to the Israelites as they entered the
land of Canaan:

Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His
commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you
today, lest -- when you have eaten and are full, and have built
beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when your herds and your
flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and
all that you have is multiplied; when your heart is lifted up, and
you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, from the house of bondage ... then you say in your heart,
"My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth." And
you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you
power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:10-18).

Have a great Thanksgiving and let's remember why we're giving thanks!

Morning & Evening -- Hosea 12:12 and Philippians 3:10

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, November 22, 2007

MORNING:

"Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep."
-- Hosea 12:12

Jacob, while expostulating with Laban, thus describes his own toil,
"This twenty years have I been with thee. That which was torn of beasts
I brought not unto thee: I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou
require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. Thus I was; in
the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep
departed from mine eyes." Even more toilsome than this was the life of
our Saviour here below. He watched over all his sheep till he gave in
as his last account, "Of all those whom thou hast given me I have lost
none." His hair was wet with dew, and his locks with the drops of the
night. Sleep departed from his eyes, for all night he was in prayer
wrestling for his people. One night Peter must be pleaded for; anon,
another claims his tearful intercession. No shepherd sitting beneath
the cold skies, looking up to the stars, could ever utter such
complaints because of the hardness of his toil as Jesus Christ might
have brought, if he had chosen to do so, because of the sternness of
his service in order to procure his spouse-

"Cold mountains and the midnight air,
Witnessed the fervour of his prayer;
The desert his temptations knew,
His conflict and his victory too."

It is sweet to dwell upon the spiritual parallel of Laban having
required all the sheep at Jacob's hand. If they were torn of beasts,
Jacob must make it good; if any of them died, he must stand as surety
for the whole. Was not the toil of Jesus for his Church the toil of one
who was under suretiship obligations to bring every believing one safe
to the hand of him who had committed them to his charge? Look upon
toiling Jacob, and you see a representation of him of whom we read, "He
shall feed his flock like a shepherd."

EVENING:

"The power of his resurrection."
-- Philippians 3:10

The doctrine of a risen Saviour is exceedingly precious. The
resurrection is the corner-stone of the entire building of
Christianity. It is the key-stone of the arch of our salvation. It
would take a volume to set forth all the streams of living water which
flow from this one sacred source, the resurrection of our dear Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ; but to know that he has risen, and to have
fellowship with him as such-communing with the risen Saviour by
possessing a risen life-seeing him leave the tomb by leaving the tomb
of worldliness ourselves, this is even still more precious. The
doctrine is the basis of the experience, but as the flower is more
lovely than the root, so is the experience of fellowship with the risen
Saviour more lovely than the doctrine itself. I would have you believe
that Christ rose from the dead so as to sing of it, and derive all the
consolation which it is possible for you to extract from this
well-ascertained and well-witnessed fact; but I beseech you, rest not
contented even there. Though you cannot, like the disciples, see him
visibly, yet I bid you aspire to see Christ Jesus by the eye of faith;
and though, like Mary Magdalene, you may not "touch" him, yet may you
be privileged to converse with him, and to know that he is risen, you
yourselves being risen in him to newness of life. To know a crucified
Saviour as having crucified all my sins, is a high degree of knowledge;
but to know a risen Saviour as having justified me, and to realize that
he has bestowed upon me new life, having given me to be a new creature
through his own newness of life, this is a noble style of experience:
short of it, none ought to rest satisfied. May you both "know him, and
the power of his resurrection." Why should souls who are quickened with
Jesus, wear the grave-clothes of worldliness and unbelief? Rise, for
the Lord is risen.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Shallow And Profound"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 22, 2007

SHALLOW AND PROFOUND

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do,
do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+10:31&sr=1

Beware of allowing yourself to think that the shallow concerns of
life are not ordained of God; they are as much of God as the
profound. It is not your devotion to God that makes you refuse to be
shallow, but your wish to impress other people with the fact that you
are not shallow, which is a sure sign that you are a spiritual prig.
Be careful of the production of contempt in yourself, it always comes
along this line, and causes you to go about as a walking rebuke to
other people because they are more shallow than you are. Beware of
posing as a profound person; God became a Baby.

To be shallow is not a sign of being wicked, nor is shallowness a
sign that there are no deeps: the ocean has a shore. The shallow
amenities of life, eating and drinking, walking and talking, are all
ordained by God. These are the things in which Our Lord lived. He
lived in them as the Son of God, and He said that "the disciple is
not above his Master."

Our safeguard is in the shallow things. We have to live the surface
common-sense life in a common-sense way; when the deeper things come,
God gives them to us apart from the shallow concerns. Never show the
deeps to anyone but God. We are so abominably serious, so desperately
interested in our own characters, that we refuse to behave like
Christians in the shallow concerns of life.

Determinedly take no one seriously but God, and the first person you
find you have to leave severely alone as being the greatest fraud you
have ever known, is yourself.

A BRILLIANT STAR

Philippians 2:14-18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+2:14-18

Dear Father,

Help me do what is needed without complaining or arguing, so that
I may be blameless and pure.

Let me be your child without fault, a child of God, in a crooked
and perverse generation.

Let me shine like a brilliant star in the night skies of your
universe, as I hold out the word of life.

Make me a source of pride to those who led me to the Lord, so that
they may know that their efforts were not in vain.

Let me rejoice together with all your saints and let them rejoice
with me! Now and for ever!

In the name of Jesus, our star of hope. Amen.

WJD! -- Greater Punishment -- Luke 20:45-47

Greater Punishment

All the people listened to Jesus. Jesus said to his
followers, "Be careful of the teachers of the law. They like
to walk around wearing clothes that look important. And they
love for people to show respect to them in the market places.
They love to get the most important seats in the synagogues.
And they love to get the most important seats at the feasts.
But they are mean to widows and steal their homes. Then they
try to make themselves look good by saying long prayers. God
will punish these people very much."

-- Luke 20:45-47 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Three great sins are pronounced upon the religious leaders of Jesus'
day: first, they are pretentious, loving to be recognized as important
religious people; second, they cheat the helpless in society they are
supposed to protect; and, third, they are hypocrites and try to cover
this hypocrisy by seeming to be pious. Those of us who are so invested
in living our faith passionately need to know that God is pleased with
our passion. However, our Heavenly Father does not want us to make a
big show of our religious zeal, especially when we find ways to justify
living in contradiction to his revealed will for us in Scripture.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, may I never ever again be guilty of the Pharisees' sins!
Forgive me, dear God, for those times when I've wanted to appear
religious, but lived my life in hypocrisy and sin. Through your blessed
and powerful Holy Spirit, conform me to be more like your Son each day.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
