=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

I Don't Like Hospitals, by Steve Ridgell

I have recently spent time at the hospital while my mother-in-law was
recovering from surgery and I realized that I do not like hospitals.
And it finally dawned on me why I do not like them: they are full of
sick people. It's the same reason I do not like to go to the doctor's
office. That is where all the sick people go. You sit in waiting rooms
with people who are not well. They have diseases that may very well be
contagious. I do not even like to go for my physical. If I was healthy
when I got there, I may not be when I leave. I am not like all those
sick people; I am healthy. Well, most of the time.

I guess there are times when I might have a little bug. And I did have
surgery for a surface melanoma. Sometimes I feel "under the weather."
But I am not a sick person. I don't belong in a hospital, or a doctor's
office, like those other people. In fact, I want hospitals to have a
"sick" wing and a "you're really not sick" wing. Maybe my doctor can
have two waiting rooms.

Yet all of us, including me, get sick and need care. It is not healthy
to deceive myself into thinking I am never sick, cannot get sick, and
am never a sick person. So I am working on my perception of hospitals
and doctor offices. They are places of healing for sick people, and
sometimes that means me.

I wonder how many times we have distorted our view of churches the same
way I do hospitals. Do we believe churches are for people who cannot
"get it together," who have made lots of mistakes, and whose lives are
a mess? Do we believe that does not describe us, or that we are not
like those people who need church? The truth is, we are just like those
people. I do not know of anyone who goes through life without needing
help from anyone.

Churches sometimes seem to have gone to the opposite extreme. It is as
if they want to appear to be a place where only healthy people meet to
celebrate the fact that they are spiritually healthy. It was not meant
to be that way. Churches are places of spiritual healing for those who
are sick. And they are made up of those who have been healed ... even
while remembering that we are survivors.

Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I
have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Luke
5:31).

That call is for me. If you are looking for healing and hope in your
life, visit www.hopeforlife.org . Join our discussion about this on our
blog. Or write me at steve@hopeforlife.org.

I want to help you find spiritual healing.

Churches are where the spiritually sick find healing.

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 103:2 and Genesis 1:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

MORNING:

"Forget not all His benefits."
-- Psalms 103:2

It is a delightful and profitable occupation to mark the hand of God in
the lives of ancient saints, and to observe his goodness in delivering
them, his mercy in pardoning them, and his faithfulness in keeping his
covenant with them. But would it not be even more interesting and
profitable for us to remark the hand of God in our own lives? Ought we
not to look upon our own history as being at least as full of God, as
full of his goodness and of his truth, as much a proof of his
faithfulness and veracity, as the lives of any of the saints who have
gone before? We do our Lord an injustice when we suppose that he
wrought all his mighty acts, and showed himself strong for those in the
early time, but doth not perform wonders or lay bare his arm for the
saints who are now upon the earth. Let us review our own lives. Surely
in these we may discover some happy incidents, refreshing to ourselves
and glorifying to our God. Have you had no deliverances? Have you
passed through no rivers, supported by the divine presence? Have you
walked through no fires unharmed? Have you had no manifestations? Have
you had no choice favours? The God who gave Solomon the desire of his
heart, hath he never listened to you and answered your requests? That
God of lavish bounty of whom David sang, "Who satisfieth thy mouth with
good things," hath he never satiated you with fatness? Have you never
been made to lie down in green pastures? Have you never been led by the
still waters? Surely the goodness of God has been the same to us as to
the saints of old. Let us, then, weave his mercies into a song. Let us
take the pure gold of thankfulness, and the jewels of praise and make
them into another crown for the head of Jesus. Let our souls give forth
music as sweet and as exhilarating as came from David's harp, while we
praise the Lord whose mercy endureth for ever.

EVENING:

"And God divided the light from the darkness."
-- Genesis 1:4

A believer has two principles at work within him. In his natural estate
he was subject to one principle only, which was darkness; now light has
entered, and the two principles disagree. Mark the apostle Paul's words
in the seventh chapter of Romans: "I find then a law, that, when I
would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God
after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring
against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law
of sin, which is in my members." How is this state of things
occasioned? "The Lord divided the light from the darkness." Darkness,
by itself, is quiet and undisturbed, but when the Lord sends in light,
there is a conflict, for the one is in opposition to the other: a
conflict which will never cease till the believer is altogether light
in the Lord. If there be a division within the individual Christian,
there is certain to be a division without. So soon as the Lord gives to
any man light, he proceeds to separate himself from the darkness
around; he secedes from a merely worldly religion of outward
ceremonial, for nothing short of the gospel of Christ will now satisfy
him, and he withdraws himself from worldly society and frivolous
amusements, and seeks the company of the saints, for "We know we have
passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren." The light
gathers to itself, and the darkness to itself. What God has divided,
let us never try to unite, but as Christ went without the camp, bearing
his reproach, so let us come out from the ungodly, and be a peculiar
people. He was holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners; and,
as he was, so we are to be nonconformists to the world, dissenting from
all sin, and distinguished from the rest of mankind by our likeness to
our Master.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Take a Pick

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Take a Pick
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Then the Lord said, "Call him Lo-Ammi (not my people), for you are not my people, and I am not your God." Hosea 1:9

Uh-Oh!

I ususally try to give encouragement through these devotionals and I usually take the light-hearted approach. Today may not seem quite as encouraging, but I think it's a necessary devotional just the same.

If you reject God, He will not be your God! If you choose not to make Him Lord, you are choosing not to be in His family. You cannot have it both ways. You can't expect Him to bless you (and man can He bless), if you have chosen to reject Him.

God is loving, compassionate and slow to anger. He will be patient with you, always willing to forgive you if you humbly ask Him to. But, you need to understand that you have a responsibility. Because God is also Holy and righteous, and because He requires justice, you must accept Jesus as your personal Savior. If you choose not to, and not making a decision is choosing not t o, then God will reject you as His child.

I know that is tough talk. I know some people can't accept this truth, but please understand, the Bible has never been more clear on a topic. God is waiting for you to call on Him so that you can be a part of His kingdom. That is the way it is and there is no other way!

I am not sure about you, but I know that I never want to be called Lo-Ammi. I never want to hear God say, "you are not my people". I don't want to be cast out of His presence. When I compare the alternative, when I consider the two different futures, I want to be on the side of the Creator, Sustainer, and Designer of the Universe. I want to be a child of God!

What is your name? You could be called Son or Daughter, or He could say "Away from me! I never knew you!".

Take your pick!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Great Probing"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 9, 2008

THE GREAT PROBING

Ye cannot serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:19

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=jos+24:19&sr=1

Have you the slightest reliance on anything other than God? Is there
a remnant of reliance left on any natural virtue, any set of
circumstances? Are you relying on yourself in any particular in this
new proposition which God has put before you? That is what the
probing means. It is quite true to say - "I cannot live a holy life,"
but you can decide to let Jesus Christ make you holy. "Ye cannot
serve the Lord God"; but you can put yourself in the place where
God's almighty power will come through you. Are you sufficiently
right with God to expect Him to manifest His wonderful life in you?

"Nay, but we will serve the Lord." It is not an impulse, but a
deliberate commitment. You say - But God can never have called me to
this, I am too unworthy, it can't mean me. It does mean you, and the
weaker and feebler you are, the better. The one who has something to
trust in is the last one to come anywhere near saying - "I will serve
the Lord."

We say - "If I really could believe!" The point is - If I really will
believe. No wonder Jesus Christ lays such emphasis on the sin of
unbelief. "And He did not many mighty works there because of their
unbelief." If we really believed that God meant what He said - what
should we be like! Dare I really let God be to me all that He says He
will be?

Praying with Paul : "Bearing Each Others' Burdens"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

BEARING EACH OTHERS' BURDENS

Galatians 6:1-5

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+6:1-5

Dear Father, lifter of our heavy loads,

Fill my heart with love for my brothers and sisters in Christ. If
someone is overtaken in some misdeed, help me to assist in
restoring that person, in a spirit of gentleness. Let me watch out
for myself, lest I also be tempted.

Help all of us to bear one another's overloads, and so fulfil the
law of Christ. But help us not to deceive ourselves, thinking we
are something when we are really nothing.

Let each one of us test our own work, so that our reason for pride
may be in what we do and not in what our neighbor does. Teach each
of us to bear our own fair load.

May we who are taught share all our good things with the person
who teaches us.

In the name of Jesus I ask all this and that you will give me a
Spirit-filled life resulting in eternal victory! Amen.

WJD! -- Divorce and Adultery -- Mark 10:10-12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Divorce and Adultery

Later, the followers and Jesus were in the house. The
followers asked Jesus again about the question of divorce.
Jesus answered, "Any person that divorces his wife and
marries another woman is guilty of sin against his wife. He
is guilty of the sin of adultery. And the woman that divorces
her husband and marries another man is also guilty of
adultery."

-- Mark 10:10-12 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
In a world which takes divorce lightly despite the carnage left in the
lives of children, God reminds his people that he takes seriously the
sin of divorce when it does not have a basis in your will. He views it
as adultery -- betrayal of the marriage covenant that was made with
him. He hates it and doesn't want it to happen among his people. Why?
Is it because he wants to limit or punish or harm them? No! Is it
because of the damage done to children and their faith? Can this be
overcome? Yes. As far as it is possible with us, divorce must be
prevented and Christian men and women must learn to make homes full of
love, joy, and peace through the power of the Holy Spirit.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, forgive us and help us. So many people in our time feel the
pain of abandonment and loss because a spouse has left them. Others
have grown up wondering what they did wrong because a parent abandoned
them and their family. Heal our wounds. Heal our land. Pour out your
Spirit and restore our love for each other in our homes. Help us, O
Lord, find the way back to your grace and power so that we can be a
people of solid marriages, loving families, and compassionate ministry.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Psalm 7:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 9, 2008

VERSE:
O righteous God, who searches minds and hearts, bring to an end
the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure.
-- Psalm 7:9

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+7:9

THOUGHT:
In a world of organized crime, gangs, and predators, we have
some real work cut out for us if we are going to influence the
violent part of contemporary culture to change its ways. Maybe the
place to start is down on our knees before the Father, asking him
to use us to make a difference in our violent world!

PRAYER:
Loving Lord and Father of all peoples, please forgive us for
anything we have done to condone or accept the violence that is
entrenched in many parts of our world today. Please bring the evil
and hostile trend towards violence to an end. Frustrate and defeat
those who use violence. May your people be an example of
productive, compassionate, and non-violent living. Please give
strength and protection to all who face the threat of violence
because of their faith. In Jesus' name. Amen.
