=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Power of Hope, by Tim Archer

There's a story that tells of a woman who volunteered with the school
district in a large city. Specifically, she was helping tutor children
who were forced to miss school due to illness. One day she was given a
name and a hospital room number, with this written instruction from the
teacher: "We're studying nouns and adverbs in his class now, and I'd be
grateful if you could help him understand them so he doesn't fall too
far behind."

When the woman arrived at the hospital room, she found a young boy who
had been badly burned that was lying in great pain in the bed.
Overwhelmed by the sight of this boy, all she could do was blurt out,
"I've been sent by your school to help you with nouns and adverbs."
After working with the child for a time, she left feeling foolish. What
good were grammar lessons to a boy in his condition?

However, her visit had a tremendous impact on the boy. Before seeing
the tutor, the boy had been slowly deteriorating. After her visit, he
seemed to find his will to live, working with therapists, eating meals,
responding to treatments. Later the boy explained, "I had just about
given up, assuming I was going to die. But when this teacher came, I
realized that I was going to be all right. They wouldn't send someone
to work on nouns and adverbs with a dying boy, would they?" What this
woman shared about grammar was of relative benefit to the boy. But the
hope that she brought to his life made all the difference. It saved his
life.

The power of hope is real

Is the story true? I don't know. Is the lesson true? Without a doubt.
Hope is a powerful thing, giving us strength at times when nothing else
can. They say that as the famous atheist Jean-Paul Sartre drew close to
his death, he fought against despair, insisting that he would die in
hope. But he also acknowledged, "Hope needs a foundation."

God provides hope. He is the perfect foundation for our hope, the one
that will never fail. Hope built on God and His promises need never
fail. I am convinced that this hope, more than any other, can change
lives and provide a sense of meaning in this world. The prophet Isaiah
wrote: "Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will
soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will
walk and not be faint" (Isaiah 40:31). Almost three thousand years
later, it's still true.

We need hope. If you're having trouble finding hope in your life, let
some of us help you. Contact me at tim@hopeforlife.org or join the
discussion on our blog at www.hopeforlife.org/blog.

Morning & Evening -- Exodus 16:21 and Psalms 102:13,

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

MORNING:

"They gathered manna every morning."
-- Exodus 16:21

Labour to maintain a sense of thine entire dependence upon the Lord's
good will and pleasure for the continuance of thy richest enjoyments.
Never try to live on the old manna, nor seek to find help in Egypt. All
must come from Jesus, or thou art undone for ever. Old anointings will
not suffice to impart unction to thy spirit; thine head must have fresh
oil poured upon it from the golden horn of the sanctuary, or it will
cease from its glory. To-day thou mayest be upon the summit of the
mount of God, but he who has put thee there must keep thee there, or
thou wilt sink far more speedily than thou dreamest. Thy mountain only
stands firm when he settles it in its place; if he hide his face, thou
wilt soon be troubled. If the Saviour should see fit, there is not a
window through which thou seest the light of heaven which he could not
darken in an instant. Joshua bade the sun stand still, but Jesus can
shroud it in total darkness. He can withdraw the joy of thine heart,
the light of thine eyes, and the strength of thy life; in his hand thy
comforts lie, and at his will they can depart from thee. This hourly
dependence our Lord is determined that we shall feel and recognize, for
he only permits us to pray for "daily bread," and only promises that
"as our days our strength shall be." Is it not best for us that it
should be so, that we may often repair to his throne, and constantly be
reminded of his love? Oh! how rich the grace which supplies us so
continually, and doth not refrain itself because of our ingratitude!
The golden shower never ceases, the cloud of blessing tarries evermore
above our habitation. O Lord Jesus, we would bow at thy feet, conscious
of our utter inability to do anything without thee, and in every favour
which we are privileged to receive, we would adore thy blessed name and
acknowledge thine unexhausted love.

EVENING:

"Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to
favour her, yea, the set time is come. For thy servants rake
pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof."
-- Psalms 102:13,

A selfish man in trouble is exceedingly hard to comfort, because the
springs of his comfort lie entirely within himself, and when he is sad
all his springs are dry. But a large-hearted man full of Christian
philanthropy, has other springs from which to supply himself with
comfort beside those which lie within. He can go to his God first of
all, and there find abundant help; and he can discover arguments for
consolation in things relating to the world at large, to his country,
and, above all, to the church. David in this Psalm was exceedingly
sorrowful; he wrote, "I am like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am
as a sparrow alone upon the house top." The only way in which he could
comfort himself, was in the reflection that God would arise, and have
mercy upon Zion: though he was sad, yet Zion should prosper; however
low his own estate, yet Zion should arise. Christian man! learn to
comfort thyself in God's gracious dealing towards the church. That
which is so dear to thy Master, should it not be dear above all else to
thee? What though thy way be dark, canst thou not gladden thine heart
with the triumphs of his cross and the spread of his truth? Our own
personal troubles are forgotten while we look, not only upon what God
has done, and is doing for Zion, but on the glorious things he will yet
do for his church. Try this receipt, O believer, whenever thou art sad
of heart and in heaviness of spirit: forget thyself and thy little
concerns, and seek the welfare and prosperity of Zion. When thou
bendest thy knee in prayer to God, limit not thy petition to the narrow
circle of thine own life, tried though it be, but send out thy longing
prayers for the church's prosperity, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem,"
and thine own soul shall be refreshed.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Notion Of Divine Control"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 16, 2008

THE NOTION OF DIVINE CONTROL

How much more shall your Father which is in heaven give
good things to them that ask Him?

Matthew 7:11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+7:11&sr=1

Jesus is laying down rules of conduct for those who have His Spirit.
By the simple argument of these verses He urges us to keep our minds
filled with the notion of God's control behind every thing, which
means that the disciple must maintain an attitude of perfect trust
and an eagerness to ask and to seek.

Notion your mind with the idea that God is there. If once the mind is
notioned along that line, then when you are in difficulties it is as
easy as breathing to remember - Why, my Father knows all about it! It
is not an effort, it comes naturally when perplexities press. Before,
you used to go to this person and that, but now the notion of the
Divine control is forming so powerfully in you that you go to God
about it. Jesus is laying down the rules of conduct for those who
have His Spirit, and it works on this principle - God is my Father,
He loves me, I shall never think of anything He will forget, why
should I worry?

There are times, says Jesus, when God cannot lift the darkness from
you, but trust Him. God will appear like an unkind friend, but He is
not; He will appear like an unnatural Father, but He is not; He will
appear like an unjust judge, but He is not. Keep the notion of the
mind of God behind all things strong and growing. Nothing happens in
any particular unless God's will is behind it, therefore you can rest
in perfect confidence in Him. Prayer is not only asking, but an
attitude of mind which produces the atmosphere in which asking is
perfectly natural. "Ask, and it shall be given you."

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Coming Soon?

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Coming Soon?
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
The Creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. Romans 8:19 NIV

My wife and I took a walk through the neighborhood recently. What a glorious day the Lord had made! The sun was shining bright through what started as a cloudy day. There seemed to be an inexpressible joy bursting out of each ray of light. God was so evident all around.

As we walked, we would point to a dogwood and marvel at its beauty. Then we would see a row of tulips in full bloom and quickly change our attention. We both took notice of the beautiful azalea bushes scattered throughout the yards. I had never seen such pure white flowers in all my life. They were nearly perfect. God, you certainly know what you're doing!

Last Fall, when the trees were full of colors, I remember making the comment to my wife that the colors were more vibrant than I have ever known. During our recent walk, I made the same observation. My wife agreed. Have we been missing somethi ng, or are the colors better, brighter, more glorious than ever before?

Could it be; do you think it is possible, that Creation is improving all the more because it knows the day of His return is soon at hand? The Bible says that Creation is groaning in anticipation. What started as a perfect display of His splendor was subject to decay at the fall of man. Now, as we near His second coming, just perhaps Creation is making itself more fully known, anxious to see Jesus return to this Earth!

I don't know, but based on the Creation I'm seeing lately, He may be coming soon!

AVOIDING ERROR

1 Thessalonians 2:1-4

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+2:1-4

Dear Father,

I pray that every ministry being done in your name in our time
will be done in unselfish love for you and for people. Please
defeat those that serve to bring honor to themselves instead of
you.

May people leading these ministries avoid everything that springs
from error or uncleanness. Let there be no deceit in any appeal.
Let those whom you have entrusted with the gospel live and speak
not to please others but to please you.

In the holy name of Jesus. Amen.

You Know the Commandments!

"{But I will answer your question.} You know the commands:
'You must not murder anyone, you must not do the sin of
adultery, you must not steal, you must not lie, you must not
cheat, you must honor (respect) your father and mother ...'"

-- Mark 10:19 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Do you know the commandments? Do you know the core teachings of God's
morality? If not, why not review them today. They can be found in
Exodus 20. While we are not under law, but under grace, we are reminded
that grace and the power of the Holy Spirit helps us to be what we
could never be under law -- people who live morally pleasing lives to
God.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O holy and righteous Father, conform me to your character and write
your moral will on my heart so that I can display it in my daily life.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

July 16, 2008

VERSE:
[After Jesus had raised the son of the widow from Nain:] They
were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has
appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."
-- Luke 7:16

THOUGHT:
Jesus came to do the work of God. Jesus came as the Son of God.
Jesus came to reveal God. Jesus came and people praised God. Jesus
came so people could see God. Do you know Jesus? If you do, do you
know him as well as you should?

PRAYER:
O Gracious Father and Eternal God, thank you for revealing
yourself, your love, your grace, and your salvation in Jesus. We
thank you for visiting our world and making us your children. To
you, O God, belongs all glory and praise in the name of Jesus
Christ. Amen.
