=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Glory of the Groom, by Alan Smith

Fed up with the way the bride invariably steals the show at her own
wedding, the university at which Rob Tombes works (exact school
unknown) carried in its news weekly its own "unbiased" account of his
recent marriage to Mary Beth Snyder:

Mr. Robert Tombes, son of Dr. and Mrs. Averett Tombes of Fairfax,
Va., became the bridegroom of Miss Mary Elizabeth Snyder today at
Fairfax Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Tombes was attended by his brother Thomas Hamilton Tombes as
best man.

As the groom approached the altar he was the cynosure of all eyes.
Blushing handsomely, he replied to the questions of the clergyman
in low but firm tones. He was charmingly clad in a 3-piece suit
consisting of coat, vest and pants. The coat, of some dark
material, was draped handsomely about the shoulders and tastefully
gathered under the arms. A touching story was current among the
guests that the coat was the one worn by his father and grandfather
on their wedding days. Mr. Tombes would neither affirm nor deny the
truth of this sentimental touch. The vest was sleeveless and met in
the front. It was gracefully fashioned with pockets and at the back
was held together by a strap and buckle of the same material.

The groom's pants were of some dark material, and were suspended
from the waist, falling in a straight line almost to the floor. The
severe simplicity of the garment was relieved by the right pantelet
which was caught up about four inches from the floor by a Boston
Brighton worn underneath, revealing just the artistic glimpse of
leather, laced with string of the same color. The effect was rather
chic.

Beneath the vest the groom wore blue galluses attached to the pants
fore and aft and passing in a graceful curve over each shoulder.
His neck was encircled with a collar characterized by a delicate
sawedge, and around the collar a cravat was loosely knotted so that
it rode up under his left ear with a studied effect of carelessness
which marks supreme artistry in dress.

Unbiased? Hardly!

The best man's costume was essentially the same as the groom's, and
as the two stood at the altar, a hush of awed admiration enveloped
the audience.

As Miss Snyder led the groom from the nuptials, it was noted that
she wore the conventional white veil and orange blossoms.

Unbiased? Hardly! It sounds so strange because we are used to the
splendor of the bride being described. It just doesn't seem fitting for
that same sense of "glory" to be attached to the groom.

And yet, in a spiritual sense it is most fitting. For those who are in
the church are the "bride of Christ" and the groom is none other than
Jesus Christ himself. And while we are used to hearing about the
splendor of the bride, in this relationship, it is the groom who is to
be held in awe. Any glory that is ours is only because of what the
groom has done for us.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and
gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with
the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to
Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such
thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish (Ephesians
5:25-27 NKJV).

May I draw your attention to the Groom and his magnificent glory!

Morning & Evening -- 2 Corinthians 7:10 and Song of Solomon 8:6

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, October 13, 2007

MORNING:

"Godly sorrow worketh repentance."
-- 2 Corinthians 7:10

Genuine, spiritual mourning for sin is the work of the Spirit of God.
Repentance is too choice a flower to grow in nature's garden. Pearls
grow naturally in oysters, but penitence never shows itself in sinners
except divine grace works it in them. If thou hast one particle of real
hatred for sin, God must have given it thee, for human nature's thorns
never produced a single fig. "That which is born of the flesh is
flesh."

True repentance has a distinct reference to the Saviour. When we repent
of sin, we must have one eye upon sin and another upon the cross, or it
will be better still if we fix both our eyes upon Christ and see our
transgressions only, in the light of his love.

True sorrow for sin is eminently practical. No man may say he hates
sin, if he lives in it. Repentance makes us see the evil of sin, not
merely as a theory, but experimentally-as a burnt child dreads fire. We
shall be as much afraid of it, as a man who has lately been stopped and
robbed is afraid of the thief upon the highway; and we shall shun
it-shun it in everything-not in great things only, but in little
things, as men shun little vipers as well as great snakes. True
mourning for sin will make us very jealous over our tongue, lest it
should say a wrong word; we shall be very watchful over our daily
actions, lest in anything we offend, and each night we shall close the
day with painful confessions of shortcoming, and each morning awaken
with anxious prayers, that this day God would hold us up that we may
not sin against him.

Sincere repentance is continual. Believers repent until their dying
day. This dropping well is not intermittent. Every other sorrow yields
to time, but this dear sorrow grows with our growth, and it is so sweet
a bitter, that we thank God we are permitted to enjoy and to suffer it
until we enter our eternal rest.

EVENING:

"Love is strong as death."
-- Song of Solomon 8:6

Whose love can this be which is as mighty as the conqueror of monarchs,
the destroyer of the human race? Would it not sound like satire if it
were applied to my poor, weak, and scarcely living love to Jesus my
Lord? I do love him, and perhaps by his grace, I could even die for
him, but as for my love in itself, it can scarcely endure a scoffing
jest, much less a cruel death. Surely it is my Beloved's love which is
here spoken of-the love of Jesus, the matchless lover of souls. His
love was indeed stronger than the most terrible death, for it endured
the trial of the cross triumphantly. It was a lingering death, but love
survived the torment; a shameful death, but love despised the shame; a
penal death, but love bore our iniquities; a forsaken, lonely death,
from which the eternal Father hid his face, but love endured the curse,
and gloried over all. Never such love, never such death. It was a
desperate duel, but love bore the palm. What then, my heart? Hast thou
no emotions excited within thee at the contemplation of such heavenly
affection? Yes, my Lord, I long, I pant to feel thy love flaming like a
furnace within me. Come thou thyself and excite the ardour of my
spirit.

"For every drop of crimson blood
Thus shed to make me live,
O wherefore, wherefore have not I
A thousand lives to give?"

Why should I despair of loving Jesus with a love as strong as death? He
deserves it: I desire it. The martyrs felt such love, and they were but
flesh and blood, then why not I? They mourned their weakness, and yet
out of weakness were made strong. Grace gave them all their unflinching
constancy-there is the same grace for me. Jesus, lover of my soul, shed
abroad such love, even thy love in my heart, this evening.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Individual Discouragement And Personal Enlargement"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 13, 2007

INDIVIDUAL DISCOURAGEMENT AND PERSONAL ENLARGEMENT

Moses went out unto his brethren, and looked on their
burdens.

Exodus 2:11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ex+2:11&sr=1

Moses saw the oppression of his people and felt certain that he was
the one to deliver them, and in the righteous indignation of his own
spirit he started to right their wrongs. After the first strike for
God and for the right, God allowed Moses to be driven into blank
discouragement, He sent him into the desert to feed sheep for forty
years. At the end of that time, God appeared and told Moses to go and
bring forth His people, and Moses said - "Who am I, that I should
go?" In the beginning Moses realized that he was the man to deliver
the people, but he had to be trained and disciplined by God first. He
was right in the individual aspect, but he was not the man for the
work until he had learned communion with God.

We may have the vision of God and a very clear understanding of what
God wants, and we start to do the thing, then comes something
equivalent to the forty years in the wilderness, as if God had
ignored the whole thing, and when we are thoroughly discouraged God
comes back and revives the call, and we get the quaver in and say -
"Oh, who am I?" We have to learn the first great stride of God - "I
AM THAT I AM hath sent thee." We have to learn that our individual
effort for God is an impertinence; our individuality is to be
rendered incandescent by a personal relationship to God (see Matthew
3:17). We fix on the individual aspect of things; we have the vision
- "This is what God wants me to do;" but we have not got into God's
stride. If you are going through a time of discouragement, there is a
big personal enlargement ahead.

Praying with Paul : "Dead in Sins"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

DEAD IN SINS

Ephesians 2:1-3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+2:1-3

Dear Father, King of the Ages,

Thank you for the new life you have infused into my being. I once
was dead because of the misdeeds and sins in which I walked,
following the course of this world, following the
commander-in-chief of evil, the spirit that now energizes all who
disobey.

Among these lost people - and as a lost person - I once lived in
the passions of my flesh. I followed the desires of my body and the
passing whims of my mind. I was by nature a doer of evil doomed to
destruction, like the rest of mankind.

But you were rich in mercy! Because of your great love with which
you loved me - even when I was dead through my misdeeds - you made
me alive together with Christ! It is by your undeserved kindness
that I am saved!

In the name of Jesus and by his authority I boldly ask you to make
of us the completely holy people that you intend as your
inheritance. Amen.

WJD! -- Just Like in Noah's Day -- Luke 17:26-27

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

Just Like in Noah's Day

"It will be the same when the Son of Man comes again as it
was when Noah lived. In the time of Noah, people were eating,
drinking, and getting married even on the day when Noah
entered the boat. Then the flood came and killed all the
people."

-- Luke 17:26-27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Noah's character went totally unappreciated by his contemporaries. They
ignored Noah's warnings about God's impending judgment and their need
to repent. They went on doing what they had always done, even as the
rain started to fall. When Jesus returns in his glory, those who have
lived for him will be waiting in expectation for his return and be
overjoyed. However, those who have ignored his call to follow him and
who have spurned his grace will be caught off guard just as much as
those in Noah's day. It's sad. It's tragic. Let's try to make a
difference in as many of those lives as we can!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I know Jesus will come with glory. I know that his return will
catch many off guard. Please use me to help those around me to be
prepared and full of joy at the return of Jesus, in whose name I pray.
Amen.

Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account

It is hard not to get discouraged when evil and wicked people
get away with what is reprehensible. Christians on every continent
have things that greatly trouble them about the evil perpetrated in
their corner of the world as corrupt power abuses those who belong
to God's people. Let's join together, believers from all around the
world, and ask God to intervene in a clear, decisive way, and bring
these days of violence and wickedness to an end!

PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, please break the power of wickedness
that reigns in our world and bring it to an end. Make it clear that
the fall of evil's power is at the hand of the Lord Jesus. Lord
Jesus, destroy every power that stands between God and us, and
bring to a glorious beginning the eternal reign of your Kingdom. To
your glory, Lord Jesus, and in your name I pray. Amen.
