=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

What Difference Would It Make?, by Rubel Shelly

Jack lets us send "The FAX of Life" to him each week. Just over a year
ago now, he shared a wonderful story with me and vouched for its
details.

The story begins with a nine-year-old boy who was being raised by a
single mother. He never met his father, but his hard-working mother put
in 72 hours lots of weeks just to make ends meet. He had a sister two
years older than himself, and they worked a garden to raise vegetables
to eat and to sell.

There was some help from the state welfare agencies. A free-lunch
program at school helped feed him and his sister. And the little family
felt blessed when they were able to move into a nicer house in a better
neighborhood.

Across the street from the new house lived a kind Christian lady. She
was not particularly noteworthy. She didn't teach Sunday School. Her
own husband wasn't a Christian, and their children followed their dad's
lead and were pretty indifferent to faith. On a given Saturday,
however, she saw the little boy and his sister playing in the yard. She
asked if they would like to go with her to Sunday School the next day.
As much from curiosity as anything else, they decided to go. And their
exhausted mother gave permission. It would give her a bit of a break.

With whatever flaws there may have been in that little church, it
opened up a whole new world to those two children. For the first time
ever, they heard names such as Noah and Moses. They read Scripture and
learned the story of Jesus of Nazareth. They saw people who cared about
each other and whose lives were somehow different. It made an
impression. They accepted Christ in that little community of faith.
They were baptized there. They grew up there.

She noticed and cared.

College, time in the U.S. Army, marriage, children -- all these came in
time to that little boy. Success in business has allowed him to bless
many good works with generous gifts. He has been a faithful teacher and
occasional preacher of the Good News. He has even had opportunities to
teach in several foreign countries. He and his wife have taken in a
number of foster children. Some of the more recent ones have been unwed
mothers. Shades of his own childhood!

But Jack told me the story with less concern about the little boy who
became a godly man than to speak of that woman across the street from a
family without a father. She noticed and cared. Without benefit of
psychology or training in Christian ministry, she did something that
most of us might have thought was inconsequential. She cared enough to
invite them to Sunday School. There they found their real father -- the
Father of their Spirits, who gave them a new life.

Jack knows the details of the story well, for he was that little boy.
And he loves to tell the story of Kathleen Callen's invitation to
Sunday School that day. He hopes that it might encourage someone else
to do something, say something, or give something that could make a
difference in another person's life.

Things that look small are often the things that make all the
difference.

Morning & Evening -- Revelation 22:17 and Proverbs 30:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, June 13, 2008

MORNING:

"Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."
-- Revelation 22:17

Jesus says, "take freely." He wants no payment or preparation. He seeks
no recommendation from our virtuous emotions. If you have no good
feelings, if you be but willing, you are invited; therefore come! You
have no belief and no repentance,-come to him, and he will give them to
you. Come just as you are, and take "Freely," without money and without
price. He gives himself to needy ones. The drinking fountains at the
corners of our streets are valuable institutions; and we can hardly
imagine any one so foolish as to feel for his purse, when he stands
before one of them, and to cry, "I cannot drink because I have not five
pounds in my pocket." However poor the man is, there is the fountain,
and just as he is he may drink of it. Thirsty passengers, as they go
by, whether they are dressed in fustian or in broadcloth, do not look
for any warrant for drinking; its being there is their warrant for
taking its water freely. The liberality of some good friends has put
the refreshing crystal there and we take it, and ask no questions.
Perhaps the only persons who need go thirsty through the street where
there is a drinking fountain, are the fine ladies and gentlemen who are
in their carriages. They are very thirsty, but cannot think of being so
vulgar as to get out to drink. It would demean them, they think, to
drink at a common drinking fountain: so they ride by with parched lips.
Oh, how many there are who are rich in their own good works and cannot
therefore come to Christ! "I will not be saved," they say, "in the same
way as the harlot or the swearer." What! go to heaven in the same way
as a chimney sweep. Is there no pathway to glory but the path which led
the thief there? I will not be saved that way. Such proud boasters must
remain without the living water; but, "WHOSOEVER WILL, LET HIM TAKE THE
WATER OF LIFE FREELY."

EVENING:

"Remove far from me vanity and lies."
-- Proverbs 30:8

"O my God, be not far from me."
- Psalm 38:21

Here we have two great lessons-what to deprecate and what to
supplicate. The happiest state of a Christian is the holiest state. As
there is the most heat nearest to the sun, so there is the most
happiness nearest to Christ. No Christian enjoys comfort when his eyes
are fixed on vanity-he finds no satisfaction unless his soul is
quickened in the ways of God. The world may win happiness elsewhere,
but he cannot. I do not blame ungodly men for rushing to their
pleasures. Why should I? Let them have their fill. That is all they
have to enjoy. A converted wife who despaired of her husband was always
very kind to him, for she said, "I fear that this is the only world in
which he will be happy, and therefore I have made up my mind to make
him as happy as I can in it." Christians must seek their delights in a
higher sphere than the insipid frivolities or sinful enjoyments of the
world. Vain pursuits are dangerous to renewed souls. We have heard of a
philosopher who, while he looked up to the stars, fell into a pit; but
how deeply do they fall who look down. Their fall is fatal. No
Christian is safe when his soul is slothful, and his God is far from
him. Every Christian is always safe as to the great matter of his
standing in Christ, but he is not safe as regards his experience in
holiness, and communion with Jesus in this life. Satan does not often
attack a Christian who is living near to God. It is when the Christian
departs from his God, becomes spiritually starved, and endeavours to
feed on vanities, that the devil discovers his vantage hour. He may
sometimes stand foot to foot with the child of God who is active in his
Master's service, but the battle is generally short: he who slips as he
goes down into the Valley of Humiliation, every time he takes a false
step invites Apollyon to assail him. O for grace to walk humbly with
our God!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Getting There"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 13, 2008

GETTING THERE

Come ye after Me.

Mark 1:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mr+1:17&sr=1

One of the greatest hindrances in coming to Jesus is the excuse of
temperament. We make our temperament and our natural affinities
barriers to coming to Jesus. The first thing we realize when we come
to Jesus is that He pays no attention whatever to our natural
affinities. We have the notion that we can consecrate our gifts to
God. You cannot consecrate what is not yours; there is only one thing
you can consecrate to God, and that is your right to yourself (Romans
12:1). If you will give God your right to yourself, He will make a
holy experiment out of you. God's experiments always succeed. The one
mark of a saint is the moral originality which springs from
abandonment to Jesus Christ. In the life of a saint there is this
amazing wellspring of original life all the time; the Spirit of God
is a well of water springing up, perennially fresh. The saint
realizes that it is God Who engineers circumstances, consequently
there is no whine, but a reckless abandon to Jesus. Never make a
principle out of your experience; let God be as original with other
people as He is with you.

If you abandon to Jesus, and come when He says "Come," He will
continue to say "Come" through you; you will go out into life
reproducing the echo of Christ's "Come." That is the result in every
soul who has abandoned and come to Jesus.

Have I come to Jesus? Will I come now?

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Let Go

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Let Go
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." John 5:8 NIV

In order to appreciate the value of Jesus' command here, you really need to think about the culture of the day. Today, although some may feel we don't do enough, there are limited opportunities for the physically handicapped to work and lead productive lives. In Christ's time on earth, the handicapped were basically outcast. They lived off of the handouts they could obtain from begging.

In this instance, the man had been crippled for a long time. Probably the only possessions he had were the clothes on his back and the mat on which he lay. His existence was one to be pitied. There was no real known cure for what ailed him (except Jesus), and even if there were, he certainly couldn't have afforded it.

Jesus has sympathy for the man, and with the spoken word, the man is healed. Jesus tells him to "Get up!"; take his mat and walk. Obviously this was a gift greater than anything money could buy.

Let me ask you a question. What are you holding on to today? This man was holding on to his mat. It had surely become a treasured possession to him. He slept on it, rested on it, and watched the world pass by on it. He couldn't have imagined facing the day without it. Jesus tells him to pick it up and walk. When Jesus was finished with the man, he didn't need the mat anymore. It would take faith to trust Jesus and attempt to walk, but the victory was worth it all.

What would Jesus have you to pick up today? Are you resting on your church membership? Are you trusting in your bank account? Are you drowning in your sorrow? Are you moping about the setbacks of your life? Are you suffering from the sin that has wrecked everything around you? Do you fail to commit to God because you are afraid He can't accept you?

Dear friend, whatever ails you, I believe Jesus would say, "pick up your mat and walk!" Trust Him with that in which you now tr ust the most. Permit Him to see you through the difficult days of life. Allow Him to carry your burdens, strengthen your walk and brighten your hope for the future. He is still the Miracle Maker, and He can still heal a broken heart.

Jesus wants to help you. Listen for His command to pick up your mat and walk!

Praying with Paul : "Spiritual Warfare"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

2 Corinthians 10:1-6

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+10:1-6

Dear Father, teacher of spiritual soldiers,

Thank you for the example of the meekness and gentleness of
Christ. If I must show boldness or be abrasive in any way, let it
be for the good of others. Keep me from having the manners of the
world or living at all in a worldly fashion. For though I live in
the world, I am not carrying on a worldly war. The weapons of my
warfare are not worldly but have divine power from you for
destroying strongholds and obstacles of every kind, for destroying
arguments and rationalizations and hypocrisy. They have the power
to take every thought captive for Christ, when men have the courage
to face up to their condition before you. Let me bear witness for
you and warn people of their peril. The very weapons of our warfare
will be the weapons to bring punishment to the disobedient, for
then they cannot say they have not heard.

But you, Lord, are patient. You give men and women time to come to
obedience. You are so merciful and long-suffering. Thank you, God.

In the name of Jesus, the Lord of mercy and compassion, I ask.
Amen.

Today's Verse : Ephesians 6:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 13, 2008

VERSE:
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of
evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you
have done everything, to stand.
-- Ephesians 6:13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+6:13

THOUGHT:
Since we are in a spiritual war, we must put on spiritual armor.
More than saying our daily prayers and perfunctorily reading our
daily Scriptures, we must learn to recognize the spiritual armor
God has given us for our spiritual protection and prepare ourselves
for spiritual warfare. We should approach each day, each task, each
Scripture, with a sense of urgency because we know we are at war.
The day of evil will come, so let's be ready to take our stand
using the tools God has supplied and the power he provides.

PRAYER:
Dear Father in Heaven, please empower me by your Holy Spirit,
please make me bold because of your heavenly calling for me, and
please inspire me to be spiritually courageous because of the
example of Jesus. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
