Today's Verse : Ephesians 2:10

February 10, 2008

VERSE:
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good
works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
-- Ephesians 2:10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+2:10

THOUGHT:
Did you know that God is an artisan? Even more importantly, did
you know that you are one of his masterpieces? God has designed us
to be beautifully useful for doing good things! So let's not let
anyone, especially not the evil one, convince us that we are not
worth anything to others or to God. His grace has made our lives
canvases upon which he will provide the world more masterpiece
works of his artistry! Let's live up to God's high opinion of us.

PRAYER:
Thank you, dear Father, for knowing me and re-making me by your
grace in Jesus. Use me to do your will and lead me to the
appropriate people and places so that I can most effectively
minister to them. In Jesus' grace-filled name I pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Don't Let Failure Be Final, by Mike Barres

You are going to think I'm making this up, but it is a true story. When
my wife was pregnant with our first child, she had quite a bit of
"morning sickness." One morning she was sick and asked if I could make
her pancakes. I don't cook. I reminded her of that. She said that
cooking pancakes was really simple. She told me that she already had
the batter made in the refrigerator. She told me to just turn on the
stove, spray the pan with that cooking spray stuff, and flip the
pancakes with the plastic spatula thing. I agreed to give it a try.

Next thing you know, smoke was filling our little apartment. The smoke
alarm was going off. I turned on the stove vent and opened a window.
She called out from the bedroom, "Is everything ok?" I told her that it
was ok, I had just turned up the heat a little too high.

I brought in the pancakes for her to eat. They were a bit burnt. She
said that she would eat them anyway. After she ate them she asked about
the cheese that I had put in the pancakes. She noticed orange specs in
the pancakes. I told her that I didn't put in any cheese. We thought
about it and realized that I had turned the stove up so high that I had
melted parts of the orange plastic spatula in to the pancakes.

Needless to say, she never asked me to cook again. She is a really good
cook. I choose to let her function in her gifting.

Sometimes we mess up in life and are afraid to try again.

This morning, she had to leave the house early. She told me, "There is
some pancake batter made, if you want to make some pancakes." I said,
"Do you remember what happened the last time I tried to cook pancakes?"
We both had a laugh. Just to give you some perspective, my pancake
burning incident was 28 years ago, and by the way, our daughter turned
out just fine, in spite of the plastic while pregnant diet.

My wife left and I went to the kitchen. I thought, "I can do this." So
I got out the pan and the spray and a plastic spatula. I heated up the
stove and poured out the batter. I'm happy to report that the pancakes
turned out really well, even though I did leave them unattended for a
few minutes while I went and checked my email in another room.

Sometimes we mess up in life and are afraid to try again. It may be a
task, or it may be a job, or relationships. Failure is not final. Learn
from your mistakes and move on.

"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ
Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the
Spirit" (Romans 8:1).

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing
I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward
to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the
prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians
3:13-14).

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of
love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).

Morning & Evening -- 2 Samuel 5:23 and Luke 11:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, February 9, 2008

MORNING:

"And David enquired of the Lord."
-- 2 Samuel 5:23

When David made this enquiry he had just fought the Philistines, and
gained a signal victory. The Philistines came up in great hosts, but,
by the help of God, David had easily put them to flight. Note, however,
that when they came a second time, David did not go up to fight them
without enquiring of the Lord. Once he had been victorious, and he
might have said, as many have in other cases, "I shall be victorious
again; I may rest quite sure that if I have conquered once I shall
triumph yet again. Wherefore should I tarry to seek at the Lord's
hands?" Not so, David. He had gained one battle by the strength of the
Lord; he would not venture upon another until he had ensured the same.
He enquired, "Shall I go up against them?" He waited until God's sign
was given. Learn from David to take no step without God. Christian, if
thou wouldst know the path of duty, take God for thy compass; if thou
wouldst steer thy ship through the dark billows, put the tiller into
the hand of the Almighty. Many a rock might be escaped, if we would let
our Father take the helm; many a shoal or quicksand we might well
avoid, if we would leave to his sovereign will to choose and to
command. The Puritan said, "As sure as ever a Christian carves for
himself, he'll cut his own fingers;" this is a great truth. Said
another old divine, "He that goes before the cloud of God's providence
goes on a fool's errand;" and so he does. We must mark God's providence
leading us; and if providence tarries, tarry till providence comes. He
who goes before providence, will be very glad to run back again. "I
will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go," is
God's promise to his people. Let us, then, take all our perplexities to
him, and say, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" Leave not thy
chamber this morning without enquiring of the Lord.

EVENING:

"Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil [or,
the evil one]."
-- Luke 11:4

What we are taught to seek or shun in prayer, we should equally pursue
or avoid in action. Very earnestly, therefore, should we avoid
temptation, seeking to walk so guardedly in the path of obedience, that
we may never tempt the devil to tempt us. We are not to enter the
thicket in search of the lion. Dearly might we pay for such
presumption. This lion may cross our path or leap upon us from the
thicket, but we have nothing to do with hunting him. He that meeteth
with him, even though he winneth the day, will find it a stern
struggle. Let the Christian pray that he may be spared the encounter.
Our Saviour, who had experience of what temptation meant, thus
earnestly admonished his disciples-"Pray that ye enter not into
temptation."

But let us do as we will, we shall be tempted; hence the prayer
"deliver us from evil." God had one Son without sin; but he has no son
without temptation. The natural man is born to trouble as the sparks
fly upwards, and the Christian man is born to temptation just as
certainly. We must be always on our watch against Satan, because, like
a thief, he gives no intimation of his approach. Believers who have had
experience of the ways of Satan, know that there are certain seasons
when he will most probably make an attack, just as at certain seasons
bleak winds may be expected; thus the Christian is put on a double
guard by fear of danger, and the danger is averted by preparing to meet
it. Prevention is better than cure: it is better to be so well armed
that the devil will not attack you, than to endure the perils of the
fight, even though you come off a conqueror. Pray this evening first
that you may not be tempted, and next that if temptation be permitted,
you may be delivered from the evil one.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Are You Exhausted Spiritually?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 9, 2008

ARE YOU EXHAUSTED SPIRITUALLY?

The everlasting God ... fainteth not, neither is weary.

Isaiah 40:28

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+40:28&sr=1

Exhaustion means that the vital forces are worn right out. Spiritual
exhaustion never comes through sin but only through service, and
whether or not you are exhausted will depend upon where you get your
supplies. Jesus said to Peter - "Feed My sheep," but He gave him
nothing to feed them with. The process of being made broken bread and
poured out wine means that you have to be the nourishment for other
souls until they learn to feed on God. They must drain you to the
dregs. Be careful that you get your supply, or before long you will
be utterly exhausted. Before other souls learn to draw on the life of
the Lord Jesus direct, they have to draw on it through you; you have
to be literally "sucked," until they learn to take their nourishment
from God. We owe it to God to be our best for His lambs and His sheep
as well as for Himself.

Has the way in which you have been serving God betrayed you into
exhaustion? If so, then rally your affections. Where did you start
the service from? From your own sympathy or from the basis of the
Redemption of Jesus Christ? Continually go back to the foundation of
your affections and recollect where the source of power is. You have
no right to say - "O Lord, I am so exhausted." He saved and
sanctified you in order to exhaust you. Be exhausted for God, but
remember that your supply comes from Him. "All my fresh springs shall
be in Thee."

Praying with Paul : "Rock of My Salvation"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

ROCK OF MY SALVATION

Romans 9:25-33

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+9:25-33

Dear Father, ruler of the ages,

You have called we who were "not your people" to be "your people,"
we who were "not your beloved" to be "your beloved." How gracious
you have been to us (to me!) that we (that I!) should be called
"sons of the living God"! Thank you, loving Father! I am overjoyed!

Why did your ancient people fail to attain your righteousness?
Because they sought it based on their works of merit under the law.
But, praise you, Lord, you have given righteousness through faith.

You have laid in Zion a stone that makes men stumble, a rock that
makes them fall. Your Messiah, Jesus, is that stone, that rock. But
I believe in him, trust in him, and will never be ashamed of him.

In the blessed name of Jesus, the rock of my salvation, I pray.
Amen.

Critical Eyes

On the Sabbath day, Jesus was walking through some grain
fields. Jesus' followers were walking with him. The followers
picked some grain {to eat}. The Pharisees saw this and said
to Jesus, "Why are your followers doing that? It is against
the {Jewish} law to do that on the Sabbath day."

-- Mark 2:23-24 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
There are some who watch others who are committed to Christ only to
find fault in them. Critical sniping at Jesus' followers --
"nit-picky-ness" as I call it -- is not a virtue. Jesus condemns
judging others' hearts on the basis of traditions and from a harsh
spirit, looking to catch them in minor points of law. The way we judge
others is then the standard of judgment used on us. As Christians, we
have been liberated from law keeping; let's also liberate ourselves
from a harsh, judgmental, and nit-picky spirit. May the spirit that
made some of the Pharisees so harsh not be found among us!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, forgive me and help me leave behind a critical, harsh spirit
of judgment. Teach me to be gracious and never let my faith get lost in
Pharisaism. In the name of the Lord Jesus, I pray. Amen.
