=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Events and Emotions, by Katha Winther

We've all had hectic and trying times in our lives. Many of us have
said, "What a bad day it was!" Have you ever had a particularly bad
week, when everything went wrong? Can you think back over your life and
remember an especially bad year? For me, 1985 and 1989 were two years
that weren't very good. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we've had
those magical and wonderful times that we've never wanted to end.

Life brings us a few ups and downs. Sometimes life's events come at us
too fast to take it all in at once. Other times, the burdens seem to
linger on and on. Have you ever experienced a week, or so, of mixed
events, all charged with emotions?

The "things of life" have occurred far too fast for me recently. I've
needed to buckle my "emotional seatbelt" in order to ride it out. On
the heartbreaking end, my cousin's wife in Utah complained of headaches
and went to the hospital. She died twenty-four hours later of brain
cancer. No one knew that she was ill. It was a shock.

On a happier note, some family members traveled to Sherman, Texas, to
celebrate my father's 100th birthday. The day before, he lead a song
during the morning worship service -- "When We All Get to Heaven." I
was so touched to see him lead that song. We had a wonderful reunion --
seeing so many of our friends from the congregation.

Many people sent cards to my father. The telephone rang off the hook
all day. Several friends dropped by to visit. One of the friends who
appeared on the doorstep was the minister who officiated at my wedding.
My husband and I had our picture made with him. It was an awesome
feeling to know that we were all together again within a few days of
our 40th wedding anniversary. Our wedding had taken place in Sherman --
we live in San Diego -- and it was great to see him after all these
years. Coincidentally, we saw the best man from our wedding at the
church building.

He is with us in the ever-changing seasons of life!

Daddy's birthday dinner and party were low-key. He didn't want any
fuss. I couldn't believe that my father had turned 100. I had never
even attended a birthday gathering for a centenarian. My parents'
picture was on the front page of the local newspaper with a nice
article about his life -- see the links below.

Within a few days of that happy occasion, we had another sad one -- my
father-in-law's memorial service. He was a good man. Among the pictures
and flowers at the front of the church building, one unusual item stood
out. It was a large candy bar: dark chocolate. Only a family member
would have grasped the significance of the candy. He loved chocolate,
and had us trained to give him dark chocolate for any gift-giving
occasions. He had become diabetic in later years, and wasn't supposed
to eat it. One of his grandsons broke off little pieces of the
chocolate bar to share during our time of light refreshments after the
service. I almost "lost it" when I ate that little piece of chocolate,
and thought of "Fafa" -- his affectionate nick-name.

Today is our 40th wedding anniversary. We'll celebrate by going out to
eat tonight -- just the two of us. Later on, when things settle down,
we may take a belated anniversary trip somewhere. However, I've taken a
real live trip down memory lane over the past few days -- that's
sometimes the best kind of trip. Every year on our anniversary, my
in-laws used to send flowers as their way of wishing us well. My
mother-in-law called events like this "victories and milestones." We
lost her two years ago, and the anniversary flowers stopped at that
time. I almost expected flowers today, and then remembered that they
weren't coming. However, I also remembered the joy of years past, when
things were different. What a blessing!

If you're celebrating, sorrowing, or somewhere in-between, remember
that God is with us always and loves us, no matter what. He is with us
in the ever-changing seasons of life!

There is an appointed time for everything, and a season for every
activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time
to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a
time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to
laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter
stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to
refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and
a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to
be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a
time for war and a time for peace (Ecclesiastes 3:1-10 NIV).

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 39:12 and Psalms 19:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, March 16, 2008

MORNING:

"I am a stranger with thee."
-- Psalms 39:12

Yes, O Lord, with thee, but not to thee. All my natural alienation from
thee, thy grace has effectually removed; and now, in fellowship with
thyself, I walk through this sinful world as a pilgrim in a foreign
country. Thou art a stranger in thine own world. Man forgets thee,
dishonours thee, sets up new laws and alien customs, and knows thee
not. When thy dear Son came unto his own, his own received him not. He
was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him
not. Never was foreigner so speckled a bird among the denizens of any
land as thy beloved Son among his mother's brethren. It is no marvel,
then, if I who live the life of Jesus, should be unknown and a stranger
here below. Lord, I would not be a citizen where Jesus was an alien.
His pierced hand has loosened the cords which once bound my soul to
earth, and now I find myself a stranger in the land. My speech seems to
these Babylonians among whom I dwell an outlandish tongue, my manners
are singular, and my actions are strange. A Tartar would be more at
home in Cheapside than I could ever be in the haunts of sinners. But
here is the sweetness of my lot: I am a stranger with thee. Thou art my
fellow-sufferer, my fellow-pilgrim. Oh, what joy to wander in such
blessed society! My heart burns within me by the way when thou dost
speak to me, and though I be a sojourner, I am far more blest than
those who sit on thrones, and far more at home than those who dwell in
their ceiled houses.

"To me remains nor place, nor time:
My country is in every clime;
I can be calm and free from care
On any shore, since God is there.
While place we seek, or place we shun,
The soul finds happiness in none:
But with a God to guide our way,
'Tis equal joy to go or stay."

EVENING:

"Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins."
-- Psalms 19:13

Such was the prayer of the "man after God's own heart." Did holy David
need to pray thus? How needful, then, must such a prayer be for us
babes in grace! It is as if he said, "Keep me back, or I shall rush
headlong over the precipice of sin." Our evil nature, like an
ill-tempered horse, is apt to run away. May the grace of God put the
bridle upon it, and hold it in, that it rush not into mischief. What
might not the best of us do if it were not for the checks which the
Lord sets upon us both in providence and in grace! The psalmist's
prayer is directed against the worst form of sin-that which is done
with deliberation and wilfulness. Even the holiest need to be "kept
back" from the vilest transgressions. It is a solemn thing to find the
apostle Paul warning saints against the most loathsome sins. "Mortify
therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication,
uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and
covetousness, which is idolatry." What! do saints want warning against
such sins as these? Yes, they do. The whitest robes, unless their
purity be preserved by divine grace, will be defiled by the blackest
spots. Experienced Christian, boast not in your experience; you will
trip yet if you look away from him who is able to keep you from
falling. Ye whose love is fervent, whose faith is constant, whose hopes
are bright, say not, "We shall never sin," but rather cry, "Lead us not
into temptation." There is enough tinder in the heart of the best of
men to light a fire that shall burn to the lowest hell, unless God
shall quench the sparks as they fall. Who would have dreamed that
righteous Lot could be found drunken, and committing uncleanness?
Hazael said, "Is thy servant a dog, that he should do this thing?" and
we are very apt to use the same self-righteous question. May infinite
wisdom cure us of the madness of self-confidence.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Master Assizes"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 16, 2008

THE MASTER ASSIZES

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+5:10&sr=1

Paul says that we must all, preacher and people alike, "appear before
the judgment seat of Christ." If you learn to live in the white light
of Christ here and now, judgment finally will cause you to delight in
the work of God in you. Keep yourself steadily faced by the judgment
seat of Christ; walk now in the light of the holiest you know. A
wrong temper of mind about another soul will end in the spirit of the
devil, no matter how saintly you are. One carnal judgment, and the
end of it is hell in you. Drag it to the light at once and say - "My
God, I have been guilty there." If you don't, hardness will come all
through. The penalty of sin is confirmation in sin. It is not only
God who punishes for sin; sin confirms itself in the sinner and gives
back full pay. No struggling nor praying will enable you to stop
doing some things, and the penalty of sin is that gradually you get
used to it and do not know that it is sin. No power save the incoming
of the Holy Ghost can alter the inherent consequences of sin.

"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light." Walking in the
light means for many of us walking according to our standard for
another person. The deadliest Pharisaism to-day is not hypocrisy, but
unconscious unreality.

GOD'S SECRET WISDOM

1 Corinthians 2:6-10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+2:6-10

Dear Father, revealer of secret wisdom,

Thank you for revealing to us what has been hidden, the wisdom
which you decreed before the ages concerning our salvation and
glorification. None of the rulers of this age understood this or
they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.

Thank you, Father, that you intend to glorify us along with your
Son, Jesus.

But you, O gracious God, have told us your secret - you mean to
give us all things in glory with the Lord of Glory! As it is
written, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him," you have disclosed
to us through your Spirit.

Thank you for this precious promise! Thank you for this hope!
Thank you for your love!

In the name of Jesus, by his authority and according to his will,
I lift up this petition. Amen.

WJD! -- Quiet! Why So Afraid? -- Mark 4:39

Quiet! Why So Afraid?

Jesus stood up and commanded the wind and the waves to stop.
Jesus said, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind stopped and the
lake became calm.

-- Mark 4:39 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
"'Quiet down!' ... and there was a great calm." This is Jesus' power in
the heart of one of his followers. When in the middle of the storms of
life, we must learn to listen for his voice, seek out his words, and
remember the full message of his life. Jesus brings us calm when we
know he is in ultimate control!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, my Father in heaven, give me faith to believe that Jesus can
calm my heart and help me through my storms. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.

VERSE:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
-- John 3:16-17

THOUGHT:
Jesus came to save the world. Jesus came to save you. Jesus came
to save me. Why? Because of the Father's love!

PRAYER:
Holy and Righteous Father, thank you for your love. I know I
didn't earn it or deserve it, but thank you. Until the day I see
you face to face and express my appreciation and my praise, please
know my heartfelt gratitude and my deep and abiding joy because of
your plan, your Son, and your salvation. I thank you in Jesus'
name. Amen.
