Today's Verse : John 1:2-3

January 2, 2008

VERSE:
He [the Word, Jesus] was with God in the beginning. Through him
all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been
made.
-- John 1:2-3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+1:2-3

THOUGHT:
Jesus was there. He was with God in the beginning. But he was
more than just a witness of Creation; he created it! Jesus, who
allowed himself to be limited to human flesh and to die a cruel and
agonizing death on the Cross, was there at the beginning as the
Word speaking our world into existence. He made it. It is his. Yet
he came and died to redeem it. More specifically, he came to redeem
you and me. So when the Word speaks to us telling us how to live to
please God, don't you think we'd better pay attention? Better yet,
don't you think we ought to do it?

PRAYER:
Holy Father, your plan to save me overwhelms and humbles me.
That you would send Jesus, the Word who created the world that I
know, is more wonderful than I can fully grasp. That he would allow
himself to be limited to the world he had made boggles my
imagination. That he would die for me so that I can live with you
captures my heart! Please help me as I seek to live my life based
on his teachings and your will. In the name of Jesus, the Living
Word, I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Open Wide

And God will open wide the gates of Heaven for you to enter into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:11 NLT

No, scripture has not contradicted itself. Yes, just as Jesus said, the gate to Heaven is narrow (Matt. 7:13-14). The road that leads to Heaven is very small. The only way to gain eternity is through the Son Jesus. It is not of works, lest anyone should boast, but only by the grace of God by way of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection. There is no other plan.

So, what is Peter talking about? He's talking about the gate to Heaven AFTER you are saved. You see, once you accept Jesus, it isn't hard to enter Heaven. In fact, while the gate was once narrow, for you He has now opened it widely. He has given you instant access to His throne room so you can enter boldly. Your road to Heaven has been perfectly, and I believe permanently, paved by the blood of Jesus.

Dear Christian friend, stand firm and let nothing stand in your way of pleasing your Father. Continue to serve the Lord faithfully as you eagerly await His return. You have been set aside, because of your faith, to receive the richness of His wonder!

You have nothing to fear in this fallen world. If you know Jesus, really know Him, then the gates to Heaven will open wide for you! Praise Him for that truth today!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A New Year's Prayer, by Rubel Shelly

Holy God of Heaven and Earth,

I know that a thousand years are as a day to you, but we humans are
bound up in time. As a new year is beginning, please teach me to ...

* care more about people and less about money,

* enjoy my work but not let it enslave me,

* and laugh more easily than I did last year.

As I get ready for 2008, help me to remember things that are easy to
forget ...

* that it might well be my last year,

* that some people are counting on me,

* and that you have things for me to do.

Lord, with the things I have accumulated over the years, please let
me ...

* shake off the monotony of life,

* try some new things in this new year,

* and mend some broken fences.

And, Father of Mercies, please teach me in this new and unspoiled
year to ...

* lighten up and enjoy children, sunsets, reading, and long walks,

* avoid quarrels and work at being a peacemaker in this world,

* and start next year with fewer regrets than I bring to 2008.

May we live it for your glory!

I cannot know what this year will bring, and I am grateful for that!
But help me ...

* eat less junk food,

* exercise and take better care of my body,

* and learn to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Above all other things, Father, I want to be your instrument for ...

* easing somebody's too-heavy load,

* relieving some sad person's misery,

* and introducing some lost soul to Jesus.

Come what may in the year about to begin, may we live it for your
glory, within your will, and to your delight.

We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Morning & Evening -- Joshua 5:12 and Song of Solomon 1:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

MORNING:

"They did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year."
-- Joshua 5:12

Israel's weary wanderings were all over, and the promised rest was
attained. No more moving tents, fiery serpents, fierce Amalekites, and
howling wildernesses: they came to the land which flowed with milk and
honey, and they ate the old corn of the land. Perhaps this year,
beloved Christian reader, this may be thy case or mine. Joyful is the
prospect, and if faith be in active exercise, it will yield unalloyed
delight. To be with Jesus in the rest which remaineth for the people of
God, is a cheering hope indeed, and to expect this glory so soon is a
double bliss. Unbelief shudders at the Jordan which still rolls between
us and the goodly land, but let us rest assured that we have already
experienced more ills than death at its worst can cause us. Let us
banish every fearful thought, and rejoice with exceeding great joy, in
the prospect that this year we shall begin to be "for ever with the
Lord."

A part of the host will this year tarry on earth, to do service for
their Lord. If this should fall to our lot, there is no reason why the
New Year's text should not still be true. "We who have believed do
enter into rest." The Holy Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance; he
gives us "glory begun below." In heaven they are secure, and so are we
preserve in Christ Jesus; there they triumph over their enemies, and we
have victories too. Celestial spirits enjoy communion with their Lord,
and this is not denied to us; they rest in his love, and we have
perfect peace in him: they hymn his praise, and it is our privilege to
bless him too. We will this year gather celestial fruits on earthly
ground, where faith and hope have made the desert like the garden of
the Lord. Man did eat angels' food of old, and why not now? O for grace
to feed on Jesus, and so to eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan this
year!

EVENING:

"We will be glad and rejoice in thee."
-- Song of Solomon 1:4

We will be glad and rejoice in thee. We will not open the gates of the
year to the dolorous notes of the sackbut, but to the sweet strains of
the harp of joy, and the high sounding cymbals of gladness. "O come,
let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise unto the rock of
our salvation." We, the called and faithful and chosen, we will drive
away our griefs, and set up our banners of confidence in the name of
God. Let others lament over their troubles, we who have the sweetening
tree to cast into Marah's bitter pool, with joy will magnify the Lord.
Eternal Spirit, our effectual Comforter, we who are the temples in
which thou dwellest, will never cease from adoring and blessing the
name of Jesus. We WILL, we are resolved about it, Jesus must have the
crown of our heart's delight; we will not dishonour our Bridegroom by
mourning in his presence. We are ordained to be the minstrels of the
skies, let us rehearse our everlasting anthem before we sing it in the
halls of the New Jerusalem. We will BE GLAD AND REJOICE: two words with
one sense, double joy, blessedness upon blessedness. Need there be any
limit to our rejoicing in the Lord even now? Do not men of grace find
their Lord to be camphire and spikenard, calamus and cinnamon even now,
and what better fragrance have they in heaven itself? We will be glad
and rejoice IN THEE. That last word is the meat in the dish, the kernel
of the nut, the soul of the text. What heavens are laid up in Jesus!
What rivers of infinite bliss have their source, aye, and every drop of
their fulness in him! Since, O sweet Lord Jesus, thou art the present
portion of thy people, favour us this year with such a sense of thy
preciousness, that from its first to its last day we may be glad and
rejoice in thee. Let January open with joy in the Lord, and December
close with gladness in Jesus.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Let Us Keep To The Point"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 1, 2008

LET US KEEP TO THE POINT

My eager desire and hope being that I may never feel
ashamed, but that now as ever I may do honour to Christ
in my own person by fearless courage.

Philippians 1:20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=php+1:20&sr=1

My Utmost for His Highest. "My eager desire and hope being that I may
never feel ashamed." We shall all feel very much ashamed if we do not
yield to Jesus on the point He has asked us to yield to Him. Paul
says - "My determination is to be my utmost for His Highest." To get
there is a question of will, not of debate nor of reasoning, but a
surrender of will, an absolute and irrevocable surrender on that
point. An overweening consideration for ourselves is the thing that
keeps us from that decision, though we put it that we are considering
others. When we consider what it will cost others if we obey the call
of Jesus, we tell God He does not know what our obedience will mean.
Keep to the point; He does know. Shut out every other consideration
and keep yourself before God for this one thing only - My Utmost for
His Highest. I am determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him
and for Him alone.

My Undeterredness for His Holiness. "Whether that means life or
death, no matter!" (v.21.) Paul is determined that nothing shall
deter him from doing exactly what God wants. God's order has to work
up to a crisis in our lives because we will not heed the gentler way.
He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him,
and we begin to debate; then He produces a providential crisis where
we have to decide - for or against, and from that point the "Great
Divide" begins.

If the crisis has come to you on any line, surrender your will to Him
absolutely and irrevocably.

GOOD NEWS FOR PLANET EARTH

Romans 1:1-4

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:1-4

Dear Father, who commissioned the Good News to earth,

Thank you for the Good News for planet Earth which you promised
through your prophets in the Holy Scriptures.

We love you for giving us this Good News about your Son, who,
though he was descended from King David according to the flesh, was
designated your Son, the Son of God in power according to the
Spirit of holiness, by his resurrection from the dead.

We exult in thanksgiving for Jesus Christ, holder of all
authority, in whose name we come. Amen.

Good News!

The Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begins

-- Mark 1:1 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
We are beginning a journey through the Gospel of Mark. Gospel means
"good news." Mark wants us to know three things about our journey with
him through the life of Jesus. First, it is a journey about God's good
news. Second, it is about a very human person named Jesus. Third, this
Jesus is also the Messiah (or Christ promised in the Old Testament) and
Son of God. Never lose sight of the fact that Mark is telling us the
good news of God about Jesus in the message that he shares with us.
Sometimes the words and stories will be challenging and hard to
understand. Yet at the heart of each story, event, or teaching is an
implicit hope that God has brought us something very good to us in
Jesus!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, as I make the journey through the next year, please help me
know Jesus better. Help me see Jesus as the source and foundation of
your good news. Open my eyes and help me see Jesus, in whose name I
pray. Amen.
