Today's Verse : Romans 15:4

VERSE:
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach
us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the
Scriptures we might have hope.
-- Romans 15:4

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+15:4

THOUGHT:
If the Bible is a love story, then its theme is hope. No matter
how dire the circumstances, no matter how big the enemy, no matter
how deep the sin, no matter how lost the people, no matter how
empty the cupboard, no matter how wide the river, no matter ... God
repeatedly gives his people reason to hope in a brighter tomorrow.
Then God brought the assurance of that tomorrow in Jesus!

PRAYER:
Eternal God, please give me patience and endurance as I search
your Scriptures to know and understand your truth. I am amazed at
the incredible things you did to redeem and bless your people in
the Old Testament. I am absolutely astonished at what you were able
to do with Jesus' rag-tag bunch of disciples. Please, O God,
inspire my hope so that I will expect something great from your
hand and then live to see you accomplish it in my day. May this, as
well as all other things in my life, be to your honor and glory. In
Jesus' mighty name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Pray 1

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

Matthew 6:5 NIV

I don't believe Jesus was criticizing public prayer. Jesus prayed in public and the Bible is full of public prayers. I think Jesus, in typical Jesus fashion, was criticizing hearts that had wrong motives. Prayer is not a public activity. It may be done in public, but prayer is a relationship between God and the person praying.

When we read prayers in the Bible they were personal conversations between God and someone who had a relationship with God. We have the privilege of listening to that private conversation. When David prays in the Psalms, it is David having a talk with God. The prayer was not recorded for us to be impressed with the words of David's prayer, but for us to benefit and learn from the relationship David had with the Father.

How is your prayer life? This week, as we talk about prayer, perhaps we can become more active in our prayer life. Prayer is a relationship. A relationship develops over time and through interaction between two parties. As we relate more to God and He to us, prayer will become a more central part of who we are and will help determine how we respond to God's call on our life.

Oh, Lord, teach us to pray!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Always with Thanksgiving, by Phil Ware

When I was a little boy, my dad sometimes filled in as a preacher at
little congregations. What he lacked in polish, he made up for in
passion and colorful stories. One of his favorite sermons that I heard
several times was on prayer. Dad's specific emphasis was always
including thanksgiving in each and every prayer. He grew tired of
"gimmie prayers" -- the kind of prayers that only ask for things for
others and ourselves, but have little praise of God and even less
thanksgiving given to him.

Dad always felt that we could thank God regardless of our circumstances
because of who he is, what he has done for us, what he has promised to
do in our future, and what he is continuing to do in our lives. Dad's
infamous line in his prayer sermon went something like this: "Even pigs
grunt in appreciation to their master when he brings them their slop,
surely we should pause long enough to talk to the Father and include a
few words of thanksgiving."

While I know this isn't the most appetizing image, nor is it the
deepest theological statement known to Christian communication, it does
colorfully make the point. In many ways, the Thanksgiving holiday in
the USA demonstrates it. We dedicate one holiday a year to giving
thanks to our Creator for his blessings and care for our world and for
us. Even on most of our best years, shopping and football still swallow
up the "giving thanks" focus of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Those prayers must be offered always with thanksgiving!

Our family has been truly blessed with Thanksgiving this year. We've
been with all of our immediate family. We've given thanks privately as
a family and publicly with God's people. We've enjoyed a beautiful
snowfall, games, football, conversation, recreation, shopping, and lots
of incredibly good food. We've been blessed to be able to give thanks!
However, my prayer coming out of this Thanksgiving is for more than
safe travel, good health, and a blessed Christmas season. My deepest
prayer is that we all will be committed to thanking and praising God
every day, in every prayer, with genuine admiration, adoration, and
appreciation. God's blessings are rich and real no matter what our
apparent circumstances suggest. Our conversations with the Father
should always be seasoned with a strong portion of thanksgiving.

Remember Paul's words to the Philippians:

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your
gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious
about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of
God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:4-6 TNIV, emphasis mine).

Paul taught the early Christians that joy and peace come to hearts that
pray ... but those prayers must be offered always with thanksgiving!

Morning & Evening -- Ecclesiastes 9:10 and Zechariah 4:10

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, November 26, 2007

MORNING:

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might."
-- Ecclesiastes 9:10

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do," refers to works that are possible.
There are many things which our heart findeth to do which we never
shall do. It is well it is in our heart; but if we would be eminently
useful, we must not be content with forming schemes in our heart, and
talking of them; we must practically carry out "whatsoever our hand
findeth to do." One good deed is more worth than a thousand brilliant
theories. Let us not wait for large opportunities, or for a different
kind of work, but do just the things we "find to do" day by day. We
have no other time in which to live. The past is gone; the future has
not arrived; we never shall have any time but time present. Then do not
wait until your experience has ripened into maturity before you attempt
to serve God. Endeavour now to bring forth fruit. Serve God now, but be
careful as to the way in which you perform what you find to do-"do it
with thy might." Do it promptly; do not fritter away your life in
thinking of what you intend to do to-morrow as if that could recompense
for the idleness of to-day. No man ever served God by doing things
to-morrow. If we honour Christ and are blessed, it is by the things
which we do to-day. Whatever you do for Christ throw your whole soul
into it. Do not give Christ a little slurred labour, done as a matter
of course now and then; but when you do serve him, do it with heart,
and soul, and strength.

But where is the might of a Christian? It is not in himself, for he is
perfect weakness. His might lieth in the Lord of Hosts. Then let us
seek his help; let us proceed with prayer and faith, and when we have
done what our "hand findeth to do," let us wait upon the Lord for his
blessing. What we do thus will be well done, and will not fail in its
effect.

EVENING:

"They shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of
Zerubbabel."
-- Zechariah 4:10

Small things marked the beginning of the work in the hand of
Zerubbabel, but none might despise it, for the Lord had raised up one
who would persevere until the headstone should be brought forth with
shoutings. The plummet was in good hands. Here is the comfort of every
believer in the Lord Jesus; let the work of grace be ever so small in
its beginnings, the plummet is in good hands, a master builder greater
than Solomon has undertaken the raising of the heavenly temple, and he
will not fail nor be discouraged till the topmost pinnacle shall be
raised. If the plummet were in the hand of any merely human being, we
might fear for the building, but the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper
in Jesus' hand. The works did not proceed irregularly, and without
care, for the master's hand carried a good instrument. Had the walls
been hurriedly run up without due superintendence, they might have been
out of the perpendicular; but the plummet was used by the chosen
overseer. Jesus is evermore watching the erection of his spiritual
temple, that it may be built securely and well. We are for haste, but
Jesus is for judgment. He will use the plummet, and that which is out
of line must come down, every stone of it. Hence the failure of many a
flattering work, the overthrow of many a glittering profession. It is
not for us to judge the Lord's church, since Jesus has a steady hand,
and a true eye, and can use the plummet well. Do we not rejoice to see
judgment left to him?

The plummet was in active use-it was in the builder's hand; a sure
indication that he meant to push on the work to completion. O Lord
Jesus, how would we indeed be glad if we could see thee at thy great
work. O Zion, the beautiful, thy walls are still in ruins! Rise, thou
glorious Builder, and make her desolations to rejoice at thy coming.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Concentration Of Spiritual Energy"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 26, 2007

THE CONCENTRATION OF SPIRITUAL ENERGY

... save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 6:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ga+6:14&sr=1

If you want to know the energy of God (i.e., the resurrection life of
Jesus) in your mortal flesh, you must brood on the tragedy of God.
Cut yourself off from prying personal interest in your own spiritual
symptoms and consider bare-spirited the tragedy of God, and instantly
the energy of God will be in you. "Look unto Me," pay attention to
the objective Source and the subjective energy will be there. We lose
power if we do not concentrate on the right thing. The effect of the
Cross is salvation, sanctification, healing, etc., but we are not to
preach any of these, we are to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
The proclaiming of Jesus will do its own work. Concentrate on God's
centre in your preaching, and though your crowd may apparently pay no
attention, they can never be the same again. If I talk my own talk,
it is of no more importance to you than your talk is to me; but if I
talk the truth of God, you will meet it again and so will I. We have
to concentrate on the great point of spiritual energy - the Cross, to
keep in contact with that centre where all the power lies, and the
energy will be let loose. In holiness movements and spiritual
experience meetings the concentration is apt to be put not on the
Cross of Christ, but on the effects of the Cross.

The feebleness of the churches is being criticized to-day, and the
criticism is justified. One reason for the feebleness is that there
has not been this concentration of spiritual energy; we have not
brooded enough on the tragedy of Calvary or on the meaning of
Redemption.

Praying with Paul : "Living from the Future"

LIVING FROM THE FUTURE

Philippians 3:15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+3:15

Father,

May the motivations of my life come from the future you have
appointed for me rather than from the past I have lived.

Let every one of my fellow Christians be mature in this matter
too, along with me.

If I, or they, are lacking in any way, please disclose this to us,
and change us!

Help us hold true to what we have already attained. Don't let us
throw this away!

In the name of our Lord Jesus I ask these things and pray that you
will grant us a spirit of perseverance unto eternal life. Amen.

Stand Firm!

"But before all these things happen, people will arrest you
and do bad things to you. People will judge you in their
synagogues and put you in jail. You will be forced to stand
before kings and governors. People will do all these things
to you because you follow me. But this will give you an
opportunity to tell about me. Don't worry about what you will
say. I will give you the wisdom to say things that none of
your enemies can answer. Even your parents, brothers,
relatives, and friends will turn against you. They will kill
some of you. All people will hate you because you follow me.
But none of these things can really harm you. You will save
yourselves by continuing strong in your faith through all
these things.

-- Luke 21:12-19 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
If Jesus' first point in previous verses was that the Temple would be
destroyed and that we need to invest in what is permanent, his second
point is equally important: remain firm and we will be saved!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and loving Father, please give me the strength I need to stand
firm in my faith no matter what outward circumstances may surround me.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
