=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

How to Survive a Bear Attack, by Phil Ware

Many years ago, a letter to the editor in "TIME Magazine" shared
something like this:

To survive a bear attack while hiking in bear country, hike with a
friend. Make sure the friend is more overweight and out of shape
than you. When you meet a bear, run like crazy. But you don't have
to outrun the bear, you only have to outrun your pal.

At first glance, this is humorous. Unfortunately, however, we've all
been that slower pal. It might not be a real bear in the woods, but
sooner or later, most of us are bear bait -- set up by an office rival,
betrayed by a pretend friend, made the scapegoat in a prank turned bad,
given the pink slip during downsizing, or betrayed by a marriage
partner. Most of us will have to face a bear at some point in our life.

More than a decade ago, my wife and I visited Alaska for the first time
in early October. Tourist season was over, a light dusting of snow was
on the mountains, and the bears were getting ready for the winter. We
were warned about bears and precautions to take to avoid them. Hikers
in the city park just outside Anchorage carried rifles just in case
they encountered a bear on the trail -- a kind man encouraged us to
walk with his family so he could protect us. We were not used to being
prey in the food chain. We did notice, however, that every group we
encountered on the trail had one person carrying a rifle.

The week before our arrival, a grandmother and grandson were hiking a
familiar trail -- clearly marked, heavily traveled, and just off the
main highway. When they encountered a bear, the grandmother sent her
grandson up a good tree. She took off running in front of the bear,
knowing her actions would instinctively cause him to attack her and
forget about her grandson. Several hours later, the boy was rescued
from the tree. The grandmother was found mauled to death. The boy
learned how to survive a bear attack: you hike with a grandmother who
loves you more than she loves her own life!

We survive our bear attacks the same way.

We are never alone when this bear attacks.

Take your right middle finger and gently touch your left palm.
Then take your left middle finger and gently touch your right palm. In
sign language, you've just said the name Jesus. We know Jesus' name by
the scars from his encounter with our bear -- the sin and failure we
could not overcome. Yes, it is by His wounds that we are healed!1

We are never alone when this bear attacks. Jesus came to face the bear
so we could go free. He was abandoned so we wouldn't have to face our
bear alone!2 And guess what! He not only defeated the bear, but he
lives with scars so we know we can survive one, too.

Since we share in flesh and blood, Jesus shared in our humanity so
that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death
-- that is, the devil -- and free those whose lives were held in
slavery by their fear of death ... (Hebrews 2:14-15).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

How has God revealed to you that he was with you during a trying time
in your life?

How do you trust in the promises that you are never abandoned by God,
even when all outward appearances seem to say that you are?

I'd love to hear from you on my blog:
http://thephilfiles.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------

1 "He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by
his wounds we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). "He himself bore our sins in
his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for
righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed" (1 Peter 2:24 NIV).

2 One of the most haunting verses in all the Bible occurs right after
Jesus is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane: Speaking of Jesus'
disciples, we are told: "Then everyone deserted him and fled" (Mark
14:50).

Morning & Evening -- Hosea 7:8 and Romans 8:23

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, June 23, 2008

MORNING:

"Ephraim is a cake not turned."
-- Hosea 7:8

A cake not turned is uncooked on one side; and so Ephraim was, in many
respects, untouched by divine grace: though there was some partial
obedience, there was very much rebellion left. My soul, I charge thee,
see whether this be thy case. Art thou thorough in the things of God?
Has grace gone through the very centre of thy being so as to be felt in
its divine operations in all thy powers, thy actions, thy words, and
thy thoughts? To be sanctified, spirit, soul, and body, should be thine
aim and prayer; and although sanctification may not be perfect in thee
anywhere in degree, yet it must be universal in its action; there must
not be the appearance of holiness in one place and reigning sin in
another, else thou, too, wilt be a cake not turned.

A cake not turned is soon burnt on the side nearest the fire, and
although no man can have too much religion, there are some who seem
burnt black with bigoted zeal for that part of truth which they have
received, or are charred to a cinder with a vainglorious Pharisaic
ostentation of those religious performances which suit their humour.
The assumed appearance of superior sanctity frequently accompanies a
total absence of all vital godliness. The saint in public is a devil in
private. He deals in flour by day and in soot by night. The cake which
is burned on one side, is dough on the other.

If it be so with me, O Lord, turn me! Turn my unsanctified nature to
the fire of thy love and let it feel the sacred glow, and let my burnt
side cool a little while I learn my own weakness and want of heat when
I am removed from thy heavenly flame. Let me not be found a
double-minded man, but one entirely under the powerful influence of
reigning grace; for well I know if I am left like a cake unturned, and
am not on both sides the subject of thy grace, I must be consumed for
ever amid everlasting burnings.

EVENING:

"Waiting for the adoption."
-- Romans 8:23

Even in this world saints are God's children, but men cannot discover
them to be so, except by certain moral characteristics. The adoption is
not manifested, the children are not yet openly declared. Among the
Romans a man might adopt a child, and keep it private for a long time:
but there was a second adoption in public; when the child was brought
before the constituted authorities its former garments were taken off,
and the father who took it to be his child gave it raiment suitable to
its new condition of life. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it
doth not yet appear what we shall be." We are not yet arrayed in the
apparel which befits the royal family of heaven; we are wearing in this
flesh and blood just what we wore as the sons of Adam; but we know that
"when he shall appear" who is the "first-born among many brethren," we
shall be like him, we shall see him as he is. Cannot you imagine that a
child taken from the lowest ranks of society, and adopted by a Roman
senator, would say to himself, "I long for the day when I shall be
publicly adopted. Then I shall leave off these plebeian garments, and
be robed as becomes my senatorial rank"? Happy in what he has received,
for that very reason he groans to get the fulness of what is promised
him. So it is with us today. We are waiting till we shall put on our
proper garments, and shall be manifested as the children of God. We are
young nobles, and have not yet worn our coronets. We are young brides,
and the marriage day is not yet come, and by the love our Spouse bears
us, we are led to long and sigh for the bridal morning. Our very
happiness makes us groan after more; our joy, like a swollen spring,
longs to well up like an Iceland geyser, leaping to the skies, and it
heaves and groans within our spirit for want of space and room by which
to manifest itself to men.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Acquaintance With Grief"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 23, 2008

ACQUAINTANCE WITH GRIEF

A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

Isaiah 53:3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+53:3&sr=1

We are not acquainted with grief in the way in which Our Lord was
acquainted with it; we endure it, we get through it, but we do not
become intimate with it. At the beginning of life we do not reconcile
ourselves to the fact of sin. We take a rational view of life and say
that a man by controlling his instincts, and by educating himself,
can produce a life which will slowly evolve into the life of God. But
as we go on, we find the presence of something which we have not
taken into consideration, viz., sin, and it upsets all our
calculations. Sin has made the basis of things wild and not rational.
We have to recognize that sin is a fact, not a defect; sin is
red-handed mutiny against God. Either God or sin must die in my life.
The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue. If sin
rules in me, God's life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin
in me will be killed. There is no possible ultimate but that. The
climax of sin is that it crucified Jesus Christ, and what was true in
the history of God on earth will be true in your history and in mine.
In our mental outlook we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact of
sin as the only explanation as to why Jesus Christ came, and as the
explanation of the grief and sorrow in life.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Words to Comfort 1

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Words to Comfort 1
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
I thank my God every time I remember you. Philippians 1:3 NIV

This week I am going to share with you comforting Scripture. These are some of the verses that put smiles on our face, offer encouragement, and are also handy to place at the bottom of birthday, anniversary, or graduation cards. Actually, the idea for this series started because someone called me looking for a verse to place on a card. While the real reason for this series is the same as every other, to point you to Christ and strengthen you in your daily walk with Him, just maybe one of these verses will show up on a greeting card to you or from you soon!

Do you ever wonder if anyone cares? Paul reminded the Philippians that he was thinking about them, and that each time he did, it made him thankful. Thats a caring thought, isnt? Do you think anyone cares for you that way? We live in a busy society. Everyone always has more to do than time seems to permit. We never seem to have time to stop and t ell others we care. This is a truth most of us know very well, in spite of the fact that we all need reminders that others do indeed care for us.

This is one of the chief reasons, I believe, that God is so serious about the church. The church is where believers come together to share Christs love with one another. Jesus knew that life was often too much to handle alone, so He told us to get together often. We do that in church. Even Jesus, in His earthly days, desired the company of other believers.

I need to remind you that if you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you always have someone who cares on your side. You have a friend that sticks closer than a brother. I can tell you also, that because you are one of Gods creation, I care as well. If you need someone closer to give you a hug, put their arm around you, and share the fact that they care, find yourself a Bible-believing, Christian church, and experience the fellowship God intends for Hi s children to have. There are those who care!

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, have a little fun and go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

SELF-EXAMINATION

2 Corinthians 13:5-14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+13:5-14

Dear Father, God of love and peace,

Help me to examine myself, to test myself, to see whether I am
holding to my faith. Help me to realize that Jesus Christ is in me
- unless I should fail the test.

Help me not to do anything wrong, to do nothing against the truth.
Help me stand for Christ and for what is right and true.

Let my life - my attitude and my deeds - show constant
improvement. Help me mend my ways, agree with my fellow believers,
and live in peace.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ rest upon me. May you, the
God of love and peace, be near me. May the fellowship of your Holy
Spirit surround me.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Not One of Us! -- Mark 9:38

Not One of Us!

Then John said, "Teacher, we saw a man using your name to
force demons out of a person. He is not one of us. So we told
him to stop, because he does not belong to our group."

-- Mark 9:38 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Isn't it amazing how quickly we can split up into our own little groups
and begin to arrogantly do as a group what Jesus had just challenged
his disciples not to do as individuals when he told them that the
greatest must be a servant to all? (Mark 9:30-37) We all want to
picture ourselves as "insiders" in the Kingdom of God -- those who are
righteously superior and correct. When others appear to be doing God's
good work, we feel threatened rather than delighted. How shallow, how
petty, and how unlike Jesus such arrogance is! God forgive us and
change us from our petty ways.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, I love you. However, I have to admit that I frustrate
myself with my own selfish and petty loyalties and pride. Even though I
hate that trait in others, I need your help, Father, to hate it in
myself and remove from my own heart. Please help me be more open just
as your Son was while on the earth. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Romans 6:23

June 23, 2008

VERSE:
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal
life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
-- Romans 6:23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+6:23

THOUGHT:
If we get paid what we deserve, we're not going to like our
wages. On the other hand, God, who is rich in mercy and grace,
gives us his gift because of the sacrifice of Jesus and not what we
deserve. I don't know about you, but that surely does make me want
to serve him more passionately and faithfully!

PRAYER:
Glorious and gracious Father, holy and perfect in every way,
thank you that your sacrificial grace bridges the great gulf
between your righteousness and my imperfection. Thank you for the
gift of eternal life. May my mortal life be holy and pleasing to
you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
