Mustard Seed Thoughts: Still Fresh

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Still Fresh
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, The Lord is upright; He is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in Him. Psalm 92:14-15 NIV

A 72-year-old sweetheart sent me a letter of encouragement a few years ago. She has a home-based ministry where she mails cards of support to those who are hurting. She said, I can't do much, but I can do this.

Now, please hear me, I am not saying that 72 is old! I know much better than that. What I am saying is that sometimes we plan our lives in such a way that when we are old enough and fortunate enough to retire, we assume that we quit active ministry as well.

Dear friends, may I urge you, in light of the word of God, to consider this mind set carefully. God has planted you to bear much fruit. The best days of your harvest may be in your retirement years! It would seem reasonable to me that if you are saved at an early age and you mature closer to the image of Chr ist each day, the longer you live, the more fruitful you can be.

Have we sent our best ministers out to pasture in search of something called youth and vitality? What about wisdom and stature? What about maturity and perseverance? Don't our more experienced Christians have something to teach those of us who are lesser in the faith?

And, to those of you who, like me, are still budding Christians: Shouldn't we aim our life in such a way that along with our retirement planning, we set goals, higher goals of service for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

We need to be busy about our Father's work!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Unmentioned Essentials, by Phil Ware

And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about ... the
world was not worthy of them ... These were all commended for their
faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had
planned something better for us so that only together with us would
they be made perfect (Hebrews 11:32-40 TNIV).

As last week ended, two very quiet and unassuming people in our church
family -- one a woman, the other a man -- passed quietly from this life
and into the arms of Jesus. Neither would garner headlines in the
paper. Neither would be listed as key leaders in our church. Both lived
quiet lives of unassuming service outside the limelight. Both did more
good things than can be counted. Both of these served folks others
didn't see or simply neglected. Neither wanted to be well known for
what they did; both just wanted others to be served. One provided
scholarships for students who couldn't afford a Christian education and
the other made dresses for little girls in children's homes -- and yes,
they did hundreds of other things in addition to these, so I share
these as just a sample.

Both of these fine, sweet, people are part of what I call the
"unmentioned essentials" of God's Kingdom. They fulfilled the apostle
Paul's charge to the Thessalonians:

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your
own business and work with your hands (1 Thessalonians 4:11).

They will be missed because of who they are and because of what they
have quietly done.

All too often, we give our attention to celebrity. Even in our
churches, we honor the person who is up front or who can speak loudest
or can display some entertaining skill in a public forum. Yet if we
scratch beneath the surface, we know the folks that win great victories
or accomplish great things or win great battles for God are often these
"unmentioned essentials" -- the quiet, faithful, resolute, steadfast
"git 'er done" folks behind the scenes.

So I am thankful today.

I am thankful that the Holy Spirit mentioned the "unmentioned
essentials" in the Faith Hall of Fame -- yes indeed, "the world was not
worthy of them" (Hebrews 11:32-40, see Scripture above).

I am thankful for getting to know more about two precious, but private,
people who served God's Kingdom in ways that only the Lord knows.

I pray that more of us will be like them.

I am thankful for the people over the ages who toiled in obscurity,
suffered without notoriety, served without fanfare, sacrificed without
notice, and advanced the cause of Christ without needing a headline, a
billboard, or a platform.

I pray that more of us will be like them. I hope more of us will thank
such folks when we find them. And I know that God will reward them in
glory in ways we did not while they lived quietly among us.

Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write: Blessed are the dead
who die in the Lord from now on."

"Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their
deeds will follow them" (Revelation 14:13).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Who are some of these quiet servants of God that have crossed your
path? I'd love to hear a story or two about the people who have
impacted your life for Jesus!

Why do you think we tend to ignore and neglect these kinds of servants
and get so caught up in the hype and bluster of celebrities --
especially since Jesus taught us who the real heroes are?

I'd love for you to share your ideas on my blog:

Morning & Evening -- Song of Solomon 5:16 and John 15:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, March 9, 2009

MORNING:

"Yea, he is altogether lovely."
-- Song of Solomon 5:16

The superlative beauty of Jesus is all-attracting; it is not so much to
be admired as to be loved. He is more than pleasant and fair, he is
lovely. Surely the people of God can fully justify the use of this
golden word, for he is the object of their warmest love, a love founded
on the intrinsic excellence of his person, the complete perfection of
his charms. Look, O disciples of Jesus, to your Master's lips, and say,
"Are they not most sweet?" Do not his words cause your hearts to burn
within you as he talks with you by the way? Ye worshippers of Immanuel,
look up to his head of much fine gold, and tell me, are not his
thoughts precious unto you? Is not your adoration sweetened with
affection as ye humbly bow before that countenance which is as Lebanon,
excellent as the cedars? Is there not a charm in his every feature, and
is not his whole person fragrant with such a savour of his good
ointments, that therefore the virgins love him? Is there one member of
his glorious body which is not attractive?-one portion of his person
which is not a fresh lodestone to our souls?-one office which is not a
strong cord to bind your heart? Our love is not as a seal set upon his
heart of love alone; it is fastened upon his arm of power also; nor is
there a single part of him upon which it does not fix itself. We anoint
his whole person with the sweet spikenard of our fervent love. His
whole life we would imitate; his whole character we would transcribe.
In all other beings we see some lack, in him there is all perfection.
The best even of his favoured saints have had blots upon their garments
and wrinkles upon their brows; he is nothing but loveliness. All
earthly suns have their spots: the fair world itself hath its
wilderness; we cannot love the whole of the most lovely thing; but
Christ Jesus is gold without alloy-light without darkness-glory without
cloud-"Yea, he is altogether lovely."

EVENING:

"Abide in me."
-- John 15:4

Communion with Christ is a certain cure for every ill. Whether it be
the wormwood of woe, or the cloying surfeit of earthly delight, close
fellowship with the Lord Jesus will take bitterness from the one, and
satiety from the other. Live near to Jesus, Christian, and it is a
matter of secondary importance whether thou livest on the mountain of
honour or in the valley of humiliation. Living near to Jesus, thou art
covered with the wings of God, and underneath thee are the everlasting
arms. Let nothing keep thee from that hallowed intercourse, which is
the choice privilege of a soul wedded to THE WELL-BELOVED. Be not
content with an interview now and then, but seek always to retain his
company, for only in his presence hast thou either comfort or safety.
Jesus should not be unto us a friend who calls upon us now and then,
but one with whom we walk evermore. Thou hast a difficult road before
thee: see, O traveller to heaven, that thou go not without thy guide.
Thou hast to pass through the fiery furnace; enter it not unless, like
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, thou hast the Son of God to be thy
companion. Thou hast to storm the Jericho of thine own corruptions:
attempt not the warfare until, like Joshua, thou hast seen the Captain
of the Lord's host, with his sword drawn in his hand. Thou art to meet
the Esau of thy many temptations: meet him not until at Jabbok's brook
thou hast laid hold upon the angel, and prevailed. In every case, in
every condition, thou wilt need Jesus; but most of all, when the iron
gates of death shall open to thee. Keep thou close to thy soul's
Husband, lean thy head upon his bosom, ask to be refreshed with the
spiced wine of his pomegranate, and thou shalt be found of him at the
last, without spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing. Seeing thou hast
lived with him, and lived in him here, thou shalt abide with him for
ever.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Time Of Relapse"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 9, 2009

THE TIME OF RELAPSE

Will ye also go away?

John 6:67
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+6:67&sr=1

A penetrating question. Our Lord's words come home most when He talks
in the most simple way. We know Who Jesus is, but in spite of that He
says - "Will ye also go away?" We have to maintain a venturing
attitude toward Him all the time.

"From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more
with Him." They went back from walking with Jesus, not into sin, but
they relapsed. Many to-day are spending and being spent in work for
Jesus Christ, but they do not walk with Him. The one thing God keeps
us to steadily is that we may be one with Jesus Christ. After
sanctification the discipline of our spiritual life is along this
line. If God gives a clear and emphatic realization to your soul of
what He wants, do not try to keep yourself in that relationship by
any particular method, but live a natural life of absolute dependence
on Jesus Christ. Never try to live the life with God on any other
line than God's line, and that line is absolute devotion to Him. The
certainty that I do not know - that is the secret of going with
Jesus.

Peter only saw in Jesus Someone to minister salvation to him and to
the world. Our Lord wants us to be yoke-fellows with Him.

v. 70. Jesus answers the great lack in Peter. We cannot answer for
others.

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

NO LACK IN GOD

1 Corinthians 1:4-9
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+1:4-9

Dear Father, my faithful God,

Thank you now and forevermore for the grace which you gave in
Christ Jesus. In every way you have enriched me in all speech and
all knowledge - even as the testimony of Christ has been confirmed
before my eyes - so that I am not lacking in any spiritual gift, as
I, along with all my brethren, wait for the revealing of our Lord
Jesus Christ.

You are my faithful God. It is you who have called me into
fellowship with your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

I have confidence that you will sustain me to the very end and
present me guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I put my trust wholly in you, my holy God, for you are wholly
trustworthy.

In the name of Jesus, who was faithful to you and is always
faithful to me. Amen.

Seeking the Father

"When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites. The hypocrites
love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corners and
pray loudly. They want people to see them pray. I tell you
the truth. They already have their full reward. When you
pray, you should go into your room and close the door. Then
pray to your Father. He is there in that secret place. Your
Father can see the things that are done in secret. And he
will reward you."

-- Matthew 6:5-6 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
In almost every place you go and visit with Christians, there is a
deep, underlying conviction: Our walk with the Lord, our life of
discipleship, our power over sin, and our love for God would all be
greatly enhanced with more time in prayer. Without realizing it, a
culture obsessed with privacy finds its most intimate and private gift,
prayer, lived out in public more than in private. Prayer is about
developing a relationship and dependency upon God as Father, not about
being seen. Prayer is about seeking God, his will, and his grace, not
about gaining a reputation or a set of admirers. Jesus is reminding us
that God has sent us an invitation to visit with him in prayer. To give
up that for the approval of the crowd is not only shameful, Jesus says
it's damning.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Abba Father, I want to know you and experience your attending presence.
Forgive me for the times I have prayed in ways that drew attention to
me, or to my "piety," instead of focusing on my relationship with you.
Time in your presence is such a gift! Thank you. I find it unfathomable
that you, the King of Ages and Creator of the World, long for me to
come into your presence. Thank you for hearing me. Thank you for giving
me such an awesome gift. Thank you for your Spirit who intercedes for
me when I pray. Thank you that I can pray with confidence knowing that
I will be heard because of the mighty name of Jesus, through whom I
pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Romans 8:3-4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 9, 2009

VERSE:
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by
the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness
of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in
sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law
might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful
nature but according to the Spirit.
-- Romans 8:3-4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:3-4

THOUGHT:
When the Spirit lives in us, we don't need a law to guide us.
The Spirit produces the character that God desires and that is well
beyond what any law would require (cf. Gal. 5:22-23). While the Law
can teach us God's will and reveal to us what is sinful, the Law
can't fix our sinfulness nor empower us to live according to God's
will. The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, can cleanse, transform,
empower, and inspire us to be what God calls us to be in ways no
law can. Let's thank God for his amazing and wonderful presence in
us through his Spirit!

PRAYER:
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew me by your Spirit
dwelling within me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
