Today's Verse : Hebrews 2:17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 15, 2007

VERSE:
He had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that
he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to
God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
-- Hebrews 2:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Hebrews+2:17

THOUGHT:
There are not many things the Bible says Jesus "had" to do. This
is a key one. Jesus had to be one of us. Notice that he did this so
he could be like us, his brothers (and sisters) in every way. The
reason? So he could be the perfect and faithful high priest who not
only made atonement for our sins, but was also the atoning
sacrifice for those sins. Incredible!

PRAYER:
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the incredible sacrifice you made so
I could be adopted into our Father's family and become your younger
sibling in our eternal family. Thank you for this grace that was
motivated out of your love and carried out by your loving
faithfulness. Through your name, Lord Jesus, I offer my praise and
thanks to our Father. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Who Me? 5

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1 NIV

Who am I? Well, glad you asked. I'm a child of God.

Not that I deserved it. I really don't. Not that I did anything to earn that love. I didn't. But, God, who is rich in mercy and grace, extended His love to me through His Son, Jesus Christ. He loved me, according to the Bible, from the beginning of time; before I was in my mother's womb. He desired a relationship with me, so He sought me out, and made Himself known to me.

I responded to that call on my life! That's it. That's all I did. I said "yes, Lord" to His offer of salvation. I accepted the free gift of His Son. And, that's why I am a child of God.

And, being a child of God means I have privilege. I am on Heaven's "A List". I am invited to the royal table, to participating in all the royal functions, because I am a member of the royal family. I have an eternal estate, kept secure for me until I reach my final destination. I am working now to prepare for that place. It's certainly a lot easier when I am secure in my position within the family.

What about you? Who are you? Who is your family? Has God blessed you? Has God extended to you the call of salvation? Have you accepted His call? Are you living your life in appreciation and respect for that call? Are you pressing on to win the prize, for which Christ has called you Heavenward? Are you excited about the feast we will enjoy for all eternity?

Who am I? I'm a child of God! Are you?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Vulnerable God, by Paul Faulkner

No one has ever seen God. But his only Son, who is himself God, is
near to the Father's heart; he has told us about him (John 1:18
NLT).

I guess one of the things I love most about the God I read about in the
Bible is his vulnerability. He is a God who can roar, who can order
armies and empires like pawns. Yet he willingly comes near to man.

And this is what draws us to him!

This God emerged in Palestine as a little baby who couldn't speak,
couldn't eat solid food, couldn't control his bladder; he depended on a
poor young couple for shelter.

And at least three times he cried in front of his disciples. He didn't
hide his fears or hesitate to ask for help. He said, "My soul is
overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death." And at Gethsemane he
said, "Stay here and watch with me." How many strong leaders today
would make themselves so vulnerable?

And this is what draws us to him. He absolutely understands us, and he
still loves us! It's remarkable!

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 84:7 and Galatians 2:20

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, December 14, 2007

MORNING:

"They go from strength to strength."
-- Psalms 84:7

They go from strength to strength. There are various renderings of
these words, but all of them contain the idea of progress.

Our own good translation of the authorized version is enough for us
this morning. "They go from strength to strength." That is, they grow
stronger and stronger. Usually, if we are walking, we go from strength
to weakness; we start fresh and in good order for our journey, but
by-and-by the road is rough, and the sun is hot, we sit down by the
wayside, and then again painfully pursue our weary way. But the
Christian pilgrim having obtained fresh supplies of grace, is as
vigorous after years of toilsome travel and struggle as when he first
set out. He may not be quite so elate and buoyant, nor perhaps quite so
hot and hasty in his zeal as he once was, but he is much stronger in
all that constitutes real power, and travels, if more slowly, far more
surely. Some gray-haired veterans have been as firm in their grasp of
truth, and as zealous in diffusing it, as they were in their younger
days; but, alas, it must be confessed it is often otherwise, for the
love of many waxes cold and iniquity abounds, but this is their own sin
and not the fault of the promise which still holds good: "The youths
shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but
they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall
mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and
they shall walk and not faint." Fretful spirits sit down and trouble
themselves about the future. "Alas!" say they, "we go from affliction
to affliction." Very true, O thou of little faith, but then thou goest
from strength to strength also. Thou shalt never find a bundle of
affliction which has not bound up in the midst of it sufficient grace.
God will give the strength of ripe manhood with the burden allotted to
full-grown shoulders.

EVENING:

"I am crucified with Christ."
-- Galatians 2:20

The Lord Jesus Christ acted in what he did as a great public
representative person, and his dying upon the cross was the virtual
dying of all his people. Then all his saints rendered unto justice what
was due, and made an expiation to divine vengeance for all their sins.
The apostle of the Gentiles delighted to think that as one of Christ's
chosen people, he died upon the cross in Christ. He did more than
believe this doctrinally, he accepted it confidently, resting his hope
upon it. He believed that by virtue of Christ's death, he had satisfied
divine justice, and found reconciliation with God. Beloved, what a
blessed thing it is when the soul can, as it were, stretch itself upon
the cross of Christ, and feel, "I am dead; the law has slain me, and I
am therefore free from its power, because in my Surety I have borne the
curse, and in the person of my Substitute the whole that the law could
do, by way of condemnation, has been executed upon me, for I am
crucified with Christ."

But Paul meant even more than this. He not only believed in Christ's
death, and trusted in it, but he actually felt its power in himself in
causing the crucifixion of his old corrupt nature. When he saw the
pleasures of sin, he said, "I cannot enjoy these: I am dead to them."
Such is the experience of every true Christian. Having received Christ,
he is to this world as one who is utterly dead. Yet, while conscious of
death to the world, he can, at the same time, exclaim with the apostle,
"Nevertheless I live." He is fully alive unto God. The Christian's life
is a matchless riddle. No worldling can comprehend it; even the
believer himself cannot understand it. Dead, yet alive! crucified with
Christ, and yet at the same time risen with Christ in newness of life!
Union with the suffering, bleeding Saviour, and death to the world and
sin, are soul-cheering things. O for more enjoyment of them!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Great Life"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 14, 2007

THE GREAT LIFE

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: . .
Let not your heart be troubled.

John 14:27

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+14:27&sr=1

Whenever a thing becomes difficult in personal experience, we are in
danger of blaming God, but it is we who are in the wrong, not God,
there is some perversity somewhere that we will not let go.
Immediately we do, everything becomes as clear as daylight. As long
as we try to serve two ends, ourselves and God, there is perplexity.
The attitude must be one of complete reliance on God. When once we
get there, there is nothing easier than living the saintly life;
difficulty comes in when we want to usurp the authority of the Holy
Spirit for our own ends.

Whenever you obey God, His seal is always that of peace, the witness
of an unfathomable peace, which is not natural, but the peace of
Jesus. Whenever peace does not come, tarry till it does or find out
the reason why it does not. If you are acting on an impulse, or from
a sense of the heroic, the peace of Jesus will not witness; there is
no simplicity or confidence in God, because the spirit of simplicity
is born of the Holy Ghost, not of your decisions. Every decision
brings a reaction of simplicity.

My questions come whenever I cease to obey. When I have obeyed God,
the problems never come between me and God, they come as probes to
keep the mind going on with amazement at the revelation of God. Any
problem that comes between God and myself springs out of
disobedience; any problem, and there are many, that is alongside me
while I obey God, increases my ecstatic delight, because I know that
my Father knows, and I am going to watch and see how He unravels this
thing.

BLESSING OF GRACE

Colossians 1:28-29

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+1:28-29

Dear Father, source of our energy,

We do hope in you because our Lord lives his life through us and
blesses others through the genuine love which he gives.

Grant us to proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone in all
wisdom, so that we can present people mature in Christ.

Grant that we may strive for this with all the energy which you
mightily inspire within us.

All good things are from you. There is no blessing except by your
grace. We live and rejoice because of you!

In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

You are Right ... But Wrong

Some men were holding (guarding) Jesus. They made fun of
Jesus and beat him. They covered his eyes so that he could
not see them. Then they hit him and said, "Be a prophet and
tell us who hit you!" And they said many very bad things to
Jesus. The next morning, the older leaders of the people, the
leading priests, and the teachers of the law came together.
They led Jesus away to their highest court. They said, "If
you are the Christ, then tell us that you are!" Jesus said to
them, "If I tell you I am the Christ, you will not believe
me. And if I ask you, you will not answer. But beginning now,
the Son of Man will sit at the right side of God's throne."
They all said, "Then are you the Son of God?" Jesus said to
them, "Yes, you are right when you say that I am." They said,
"Why do we need witnesses now? We ourselves heard him say
this!"

-- Luke 22:63-71 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The irony of this event is that Jesus' enemies are right in their
accusation -- he is the Messiah, the Son of God. They are also wrong --
they won't believe in Jesus as Messiah and Son of God, but instead are
intent on killing him. They are the vivid reminder that we can say the
right things and yet refuse to believe them. We can say the right
things, but say them in ridicule and be guilty of sin. The battle we
face is an issue of our hearts. Are we seeking God's will, or are we
protecting our religious interests? Let's continually seek to have our
hearts open for God's truth and God's will.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, as I seek truth, help me seek you and your will first. I know
that I cannot authentically live in obedience to your truth without
seeking to honor you. Purify my heart and create a right spirit in me.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
