Being Able to Do All Things in Christ (3)

Being Able to Do All Things in Christ (3)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bible Verses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phil. 4:12 I know also how to be abased, and I know how to
abound; in everything and in all things I have learned the
secret both to be filled and to hunger, both to abound and to
lack. (13) I am able to do all things in Him who empowers
me.
3: 8 ...that I may gain Christ (9) And be found in Him...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Part 3 of 3)
In 4:13 Paul refers to Christ as the One who "empowers me."
To be so empowered is to be made dynamic inwardly. Christ
dwells in us (Col. 1:27). He empowers us, makes us dynamic,
from within, not from without. By such inward empowering Paul
could do all things in Christ. In 4:13 we find the secret to
which Paul refers in verse 12. Here Paul says that he is in
Christ, in the One who empowers him. In chapter three Paul
testified that he pursued Christ in order to gain Him and be
found in Him. Now in 4:13 Paul says that he is in Him. In
Christ as the One who empowers him Paul could do all things.
He could say, "Christ is my secret of sufficiency. As long as
I have Him and as long as I am in Him, I can do all things in
Him."

To appreciate Paul's word we need to join the phrase "in Him"
in 4:13 to the same phrase in 3:9. In 3:9 Paul aspired to be
found in Him; in 4:13 Paul declared that being in Him he
could do all things in the One who empowered him. This is the
secret.

Our circumstances may change. In certain circumstances we may
abound, and in others we may be abased. But whether we abound
or are abased, the enjoyment of the Lord is the same. Perhaps
he enjoyed more of Christ when he was poor than when he was
rich. This, however, is my understanding. Perhaps Paul would
say, "No, I enjoy Christ equally when I am abased and when I
am abounding. It makes no difference to me whether I am rich
or poor, high or low. The enjoyment of Christ is the same."
Even though the enjoyment might be the same, the taste might
still be different. Whether or not there was any difference
in enjoyment or in taste, it is certain that Paul had learned
the secret.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Making God Touchable, by Phil Ware

Ah, the sense of touch. While it warns us of danger and alerts us to
pain, our sense of touch opens up a world of delight, joy, security,
love, tenderness, and a host of other emotions. Think about how
powerful our sense of touch can be as you think about ...

* the feel of cold skin cream rubbed on your sunburned shoulders
making you shudder with shock and deligh.

* the sting in your hand from a high five celebrating what you have
just accomplished.

* the gentle tousling of your hair by someone you love.

* the gentle drag of your daddy's fingertips across the top of your
palm to help you relax.

* the stroke of your mom on your cheek as she puts a cool rag on your
feverish forehead.

Most of us have experienced hundreds of other similar moments of touch
that thrilled, excited, or comforted us. God made us tactile people --
folks whose lives are empty if they are devoid of personal, human
touch. So, God refused to only be theoretical or theological: God chose
to be tactile and touchable, too.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we
have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have
touched -- this we proclaim concerning the Word of life (1 John 1:1
TNIV).

These words sound like distant echoes from Thomas' encounter with the
resurrected Jesus:

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with
the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We
have seen the Lord!"

But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and
put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,
I will not believe."

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was
with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among
them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put
your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into
my side. Stop doubting and believe."

Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

(John 20:24-28)

What do these passages have in common? In both, John talks about the
touchability of Jesus.

Jesus came to our world as God wearing human skin. He came as Immanuel,
God with us, in human form. He was God Who was touchable skin in a real
human body. This means that God got splinters in the carpenter shop,
blisters on his feet during his long walks, sweat on his sunburned
face, and piercings in his hands, feet, and side on the cross. Yes, the
Passion was God knowingly enduring the humiliation and rejection of His
own people in the Cross (Isaiah 53:3), fully with the sense of touch:

... a man of suffering, and familiar with pain ... pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment
that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah
53:3-5).

Through Jesus, we witness God touching the broken, the mortal, and the
untouchable. This touch of God through the hands of Jesus made His
ministry powerful and personal:

When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law
lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left
her, and she got up and began to wait on him (Matthew 8:14-15).

While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of
Jairus, the synagogue leader. "Your daughter is dead," they said.
"Why bother the teacher anymore?" ... he took the child's father
and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where
the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha
koum!" (which means "Little girl, I say to you, get up!") (Mark
5:35-41).

While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was
covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to
the ground and begged him, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make
me clean." Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am
willing," he said. "Be clean!" And immediately the leprosy left him
(Luke 5:12-13).

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. ... Having said
this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put
it on the man's eyes. "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of
Siloam" (this word means "Sent"). So the man went and washed, and
came home seeing (John 9:1-7).

Jesus' ministry was about the touch of God for those who needed it and
about God being touchable by those who were seeking Him. Which brings
us back full circle to Jesus' resurrection appearance with Thomas and
the other apostles:

Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I
am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said,
"Receive the Holy Spirit" (John 20:21-22).

Did you hear what Jesus said? We are sent to make God touchable and to
share the touch of God with those who most need it!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

LIFE Questions:

The following questions are for small group discussion, personal
reflection, and for home gatherings. I would love to get your response
on my blog, as well:
http://thephilfiles.com

Those of us who gather around the Lord's Table and follow Jesus are the
Body of Christ: we are the physical presence of Jesus in the world
today (1 Corinthians 10:16-17). Our work is to make faith touchable for
a world that cannot see or touch God.

As God's people, who are we touching?

How does understanding this vital truth change your approach to each
day?

As God's people, who are we touching?

* Are these the same kind of folks Jesus touched?

What do you need to do personally to help share the touch of God with
others?

* How does your schedule need to change if you are going to share the
touch of God with others?

* How can you share the touch of God with those in your normal weekly
schedule?

* How does knowing that you are sent by Jesus to share the touch of
God with others change the way you look at the people you see every
day?

Morning & Evening -- Romans 8:30 and Lamentations 3:21

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, May 28, 2009

MORNING:

"Whom he justified, them he also glorified."
-- Romans 8:30

Here is a precious truth for thee, believer. Thou mayest be poor, or in
suffering, or unknown, but for thine encouragement take a review of thy
"calling" and the consequences that flow from it, and especially that
blessed result here spoken of. As surely as thou art God's child today,
so surely shall all thy trials soon be at an end, and thou shalt be
rich to all the intents of bliss. Wait awhile, and that weary head
shall wear the crown of glory, and that hand of labour shall grasp the
palm-branch of victory. Lament not thy troubles, but rather rejoice
that ere long thou wilt be where "there shall be neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain." The chariots of fire are
at thy door, and a moment will suffice to bear thee to the glorified.
The everlasting song is almost on thy lip. The portals of heaven stand
open for thee. Think not that thou canst fail of entering into rest. If
he hath called thee, nothing can divide thee from his love. Distress
cannot sever the bond; the fire of persecution cannot burn the link;
the hammer of hell cannot break the chain. Thou art secure; that voice
which called thee at first, shall call thee yet again from earth to
heaven, from death's dark gloom to immortality's unuttered splendours.
Rest assured, the heart of him who has justified thee beats with
infinite love towards thee. Thou shalt soon be with the glorified,
where thy portion is; thou art only waiting here to be made meet for
the inheritance, and that done, the wings of angels shall waft thee far
away, to the mount of peace, and joy, and blessedness, where,

"Far from a world of grief and sin,
With God eternally shut in,"
thou shalt rest for ever and ever.

EVENING:

"This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope."
-- Lamentations 3:21

Memory is frequently the bond slave of despondency. Dispairing minds
call to remembrance every dark foreboding in the past, and dilate upon
every gloomy feature in the present; thus memory, clothed in sackcloth,
presents to the mind a cup of mingled gall and wormwood. There is,
however, no necessity for this. Wisdom can readily transform memory
into an angel of comfort. That same recollection which in its left hand
brings so many gloomy omens, may be trained to bear in its right a
wealth of hopeful signs. She need not wear a crown of iron, she may
encircle her brow with a fillet of gold, all spangled with stars. Thus
it was in Jeremiah's experience: in the previous verse memory had
brought him to deep humiliation of soul: "My soul hath them still in
remembrance, and is humbled in me;" and now this same memory restored
him to life and comfort. "This I recall to my mind, therefore have I
hope." Like a two-edged sword, his memory first killed his pride with
one edge, and then slew his despair with the other. As a general
principle, if we would exercise our memories more wisely, we might, in
our very darkest distress, strike a match which would instantaneously
kindle the lamp of comfort. There is no need for God to create a new
thing upon the earth in order to restore believers to joy; if they
would prayerfully rake the ashes of the past, they would find light for
the present; and if they would turn to the book of truth and the throne
of grace, their candle would soon shine as aforetime. Be it ours to
remember the lovingkindness of the Lord, and to rehearse his deeds of
grace. Let us open the volume of recollection which is so richly
illuminated with memorials of mercy, and we shall soon be happy. Thus
memory may be, as Coleridge calls it, "the bosom-spring of joy," and
when the Divine Comforter bends it to his service, it may be chief
among earthly comforters.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Unquestioned Revelation"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 28, 2009

UNQUESTIONED REVELATION

And in that day ye shall ask Me nothing.

John 16:23
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+16:23&sr=1

When is "that day"? When the Ascended Lord makes you one with the
Father. In that day you will be one with the Father as Jesus is, and
"in that day," Jesus says, "ye shall ask Me nothing." Until the
resurrection life of Jesus is manifested in you, you want to ask this
and that; then after a while you find all questions gone, you do not
seem to have any left to ask. You have come to the place of entire
reliance on the resurrection life of Jesus which brings you into
perfect contact with the purpose of God. Are you living that life
now? If not, why shouldn't you?

There may be any number of things dark to your understanding, but
they do not come in between your heart and God. "And in that day ye
shall ask Me no question" - you do not need to, you are so certain
that God will bring things out in accordance with His will. John 14:1
has become the real state of your heart, and there are no more
questions to be asked. If anything is a mystery to you and it is
coming in between you and God, never look for the explanation in your
intellect, look for it in your disposition, it is that which is
wrong. When once your disposition is willing to submit to the life of
Jesus, the under standing will be perfectly clear, and you will get
to the place where there is no distance between the Father and His
child because the Lord has made you one, and "in that day ye shall
ask Me no question."

Praying with Paul : "God's Treasure Revealed"

GOD'S TREASURE REVEALED

2 Corinthians 4:7-12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+4:7-12

Dear Father, powerful sustainer,

Thank you for putting your treasure in a cracked clay pot like me
so that it will be evident that the treasure is from you, the
transcendent and powerful God, and not from me, the container.

Thank you for upholding all who serve you. When I am afflicted in
every way, I am not crushed; when perplexed, I am not driven to
despair; when persecuted, I am not forsaken; when struck down, I am
not destroyed.

Reveal your immortality through my mortal body. May unbelievers
see the glorious work you are doing in my life.

I come as your humble servant, in the name of your only Son. Amen.

WJD! -- Come to Me -- Matthew 11:28

Come to Me

"Come to me all you people that are tired and have heavy
burdens. I will give you rest."

-- Matthew 11:28 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Tired! Weary! Exhausted! Depleted! Burdened! Is that you? There are
times when the limits of our mortality overwhelm our intentions,
commitments, and abilities. In our quest for significance, we chase so
many things. But there is only one true quest for significance that
leads to rest: we must surrender all of those burdens to Jesus and
trust him to supply our significance. Why is it so hard for us to come
to Jesus? ... To let him begin right now where we are in our lives? Why
is it so hard to put down our burdens and come to him?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Lord God Almighty, you are marvelous beyond description and majestic
beyond comprehension. But since you came to my world in Jesus, I come
to him to find you. Please help me know you as I come to Jesus for
rest. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Proverbs 31:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 28, 2009

VERSE:
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the
rights of all who are destitute.
-- Proverbs 31:8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Proverbs+31:8

THOUGHT:
God's people in every era are called to defend the rights of the
weak, speak up for the disenfranchised, and protect the lives of
those who are vulnerable. This comprehensive call is the great
reminder that the blessings, rights, wealth, and power we may have
is not ours alone; it is a gift from God to be used to bless those
who have no power to speak, to defend, or to protect themselves.

PRAYER:
Father, rouse in your people, rouse in me, a passion to stand up
for those who are vulnerable to abuse, to abandonment, and to
attack. Please use us, and especially Father, please use me, to be
a redemptive force in the time and the circle of influence in which
I live. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
