Today's Verse : Hebrews 2:18

December 16, 2007

VERSE:
Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to
help those who are being tempted.
-- Hebrews 2:18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Hebrews+2:18

THOUGHT:
Jesus was tempted like we are! He suffered like we do! God in
his grace made sure that we have someone in heaven who knows what
it is like to face suffering and mortality. This knowledge is not
only omniscient wisdom. Jesus also guarantees that heaven's
knowledge includes human experience. Aren't you thankful that Jesus
knew suffering and mortality and that he now lives to redeem, to
bless, and to ultimately help us mortals?

PRAYER:
Loving and Almighty God, I know you know me and what is best for
me. But Father, I'm even more confident in your care and
understanding because Jesus shared in our wrestling match with
suffering and mortality. Thank you, Jesus, for pleading my cause at
the Father's right hand. I ask for the Father's continued grace in
your name, Lord Jesus. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Give Mary Credit, by Jeff Lee

We seldom give Mary, the mother of the Lord, much credit. She did far
more than just raising Jesus up, she had an incredible faith.

"Nothing is impossible for God!" Mary said, "I am the Lord's
servant! Let it happen as you have said." (Luke 1:37-38 CEV)

"Oh, God, I am willing ... if only you'll do it my way." If we're
honest, that's what we often say ... or at least mean. So let's be
honest with ourselves. What would it take for me to really be able to
say, "I am the Lord's servant! Let it happen as you have said"?

Morning & Evening -- Ruth 1:14 and Isaiah 54:11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, December 15, 2007

MORNING:

"Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her."
-- Ruth 1:14

Both of them had an affection for Naomi, and therefore set out with her
upon her return to the land of Judah. But the hour of test came; Naomi
most unselfishly set before each of them the trials which awaited them,
and bade them if they cared for ease and comfort to return to their
Moabitish friends. At first both of them declared that they would cast
in their lot with the Lord's people; but upon still further
consideration Orpah with much grief and a respectful kiss left her
mother in law, and her people, and her God, and went back to her
idolatrous friends, while Ruth with all her heart gave herself up to
the God of her mother in law. It is one thing to love the ways of the
Lord when all is fair, and quite another to cleave to them under all
discouragements and difficulties. The kiss of outward profession is
very cheap and easy, but the practical cleaving to the Lord, which must
show itself in holy decision for truth and holiness, is not so small a
matter. How stands the case with us, is our heart fixed upon Jesus, is
the sacrifice bound with cords to the horns of the altar? Have we
counted the cost, and are we solemnly ready to suffer all worldly loss
for the Master's sake? The after gain will be an abundant recompense,
for Egypt's treasures are not to be compared with the glory to be
revealed. Orpah is heard of no more; in glorious ease and idolatrous
pleasure her life melts into the gloom of death; but Ruth lives in
history and in heaven, for grace has placed her in the noble line
whence sprung the King of kings. Blessed among women shall those be who
for Christ's sake can renounce all; but forgotten and worse than
forgotten shall those be who in the hour of temptation do violence to
conscience and turn back unto the world. O that this morning we may not
be content with the form of devotion, which may be no better than
Orpah's kiss, but may the Holy Spirit work in us a cleaving of our
whole heart to our Lord Jesus.

EVENING:

"And lay thy foundations with sapphires."
-- Isaiah 54:11

Not only that which is seen of the church of God, but that which is
unseen, is fair and precious. Foundations are out of sight, and so long
as they are firm it is not expected that they should be valuable; but
in Jehovah's work everything is of a piece, nothing slurred, nothing
mean. The deep foundations of the work of grace are as sapphires for
preciousness, no human mind is able to measure their glory. We build
upon the covenant of grace, which is firmer than adamant, and as
enduring as jewels upon which age spends itself in vain. Sapphire
foundations are eternal, and the covenant abides throughout the
lifetime of the Almighty. Another foundation is the person of the Lord
Jesus, which is clear and spotless, everlasting and beautiful as the
sapphire; blending in one the deep blue of earth's ever rolling ocean
and the azure of its all embracing sky. Once might our Lord have been
likened to the ruby as he stood covered with his own blood, but now we
see him radiant with the soft blue of love, love abounding, deep,
eternal. Our eternal hopes are built upon the justice and the
faithfulness of God, which are clear and cloudless as the sapphire. We
are not saved by a compromise, by mercy defeating justice, or law
suspending its operations; no, we defy the eagle's eye to detect a flaw
in the groundwork of our confidence-our foundation is of sapphire, and
will endure the fire.

The Lord himself has laid the foundation of his people's hopes. It is
matter for grave enquiry whether our hopes are built upon such a basis.
Good works and ceremonies are not a foundation of sapphires, but of
wood, hay, and stubble; neither are they laid by God, but by our own
conceit. Foundations will all be tried ere long: woe unto him whose
lofty tower shall come down with a crash, because based on a quicksand.
He who is built on sapphires may await storm or fire with equanimity,
for he shall abide the test.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Approved Unto God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 15, 2007

APPROVED UNTO GOD

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that
needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2ti+2:15&sr=1

If you cannot express yourself on any subject, struggle until you
can. If you do not, someone will be the poorer all the, days of his
life. Struggle to re-express some truth of God to your self, and God
will use that expression to some one else. Go through the winepress
of God where the grapes are crushed. You must struggle to get
expression experimentally, then there will come a time when that
expression will become the very wine of strengthening to someone
else; but if you say lazily - "I am not going to struggle to express
this thing for myself, I will borrow what I say," the expression will
not only be of no use to you, but of no use to anyone. Try to state
to yourself what you feel implicitly to be God's truth, and you give
God a chance to pass it on to someone else through you.

Always make a practice of provoking your own mind to think out what
it accepts easily. Our position is not ours until we make it ours by
suffering. The author who benefits you most is not the one who tells
you something you did not know before, but the one who gives
expression to the truth that has been dumbly struggling in you for
utterance.

THE KNITTING OF HEARTS

Colossians 2:1-3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+2:1-3

Dear Father, encourager,

Encourage our hearts and knit them together in love with the heart
of Jesus and the hearts of every other child of yours!

Give us all the riches of knowing and understanding of what you
had formerly kept secret, the Good News about Jesus Christ, for in
him you have hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Give
us firm assurance in him.

Whatever new dimension or unfolding of your grace that shall come,
it will be, I am convinced, a disclosure of the good things
originally hidden in Christ. Help us to know it when we see it.

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Not Guilty

Then the whole group stood up and led Jesus to Pilate. They
began to accuse Jesus. They told Pilate, "We caught this man
trying to change the thinking of our people. He says we
should not pay taxes to Caesar. He calls himself the Christ,
a king." Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
Jesus answered, "Yes, that is right." Pilate said to the
leading priests and the people, "I find nothing wrong with
this man."

-- Luke 23:1-4 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The charges that the enemies of Jesus present are all lies. Pilate sees
through these lies and goes to the crucial question: is Jesus King of
the Jews? Jesus acknowledges that he is. Pilate pronounces him not
guilty. In fact, in the Gospel of Luke and in his companion volume, the
book of Acts, Romans officials are repeatedly looking on Jesus and his
disciples with favor. Unfortunately, however, political expediency
often wins out over truth -- as it does here with Pilate. Finding
nothing wrong with Jesus, even recognizing him as an important teacher
or a righteous leader is not enough. Do we believe he is the Son of
God, our Savior and Lord? Are we willing to base our lives on his
death, burial, and resurrection by confessing him and sharing with him
in his saving work through baptism? Do we believe that he can transform
us totally by pouring his Holy Spirit into our hearts and working his
will in our lives? Jesus must be far more than a good guy and a great
teacher. He must be our Lord! If he is not, then we will simply put him
into the most convenient place in our lives rather than letting him
totally transform us.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, please do your work in my life. I believe
that Jesus, your Son, is the Messiah, my Savior and my Lord. I fully
trust that he lived on earth as a human like me and that he gave up his
life on the cross, that he was buried, and that you raised him from the
dead. Please conform me to his character through the Holy Spirit who is
at work in me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
