Today's Verse : Proverbs 21:30

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 1, 2009

VERSE:
There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against
the LORD.
-- Proverbs 21:30
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Proverbs+21:30

THOUGHT:
No matter how fresh the start nor how great the plans we have
made, if we do not walk with God, the coming year will not be a
spiritual success. As we receive this gift of a new year, let's
commit to serve the Lord. As we make plans for the coming days
ahead, let's make sure that those plans are made based on the
LORD's revealed will in Scripture and prayerful consideration of
what our God wants us to accomplish.

PRAYER:
God of the ages, my Father in heaven, thank you for being very
near as I start on a new year. Please help me know your will each
day. Bring the people into my life who will help me love you more,
serve you effectively, and bless others in meaningful ways. To you
be all the honor and glory in what I do, think, and say in the days
ahead. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: New Trust 3

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
New Trust 3
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
The helpless put their trust in you. You are the defender of orphans. Psalm 10:14b NLT

If you are in a situation today and you have reached the point where everything looks helpless, you are in a prime position for God to be your Helper. God loves to help the helpless.

God loves to do those things, which give Him glory. It does not glorify God when you can help yourself. It gives Him no glory when you find a way out of your situation apart from Him. As smart as He may have made you, and as many experiences as you may have had, God wants each of us to get to a helpless situation, where we can do nothing without Him, where we have nowhere else to turn, and then watch us put our trust in Him as He delivers us. That gives Him glory. That builds our character. That helps us to trust Him even more.

As we end one year and begin another, are you in one of those helpless situations? God may be waiting for you to surrender, throw your hands up, call on Him , and literally, and permanently, leave your burdens with Him so that He can receive glory through your life.

Let it be a Happy New Year!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Happy New Life, by Tim Archer

People like new things. If you don't believe me, look at the
advertising around you. New product. New formula. New look. New smell.
New taste. New and improved. Brand spanking new.

People love the smell of a new car. Most of us don't even know what
that smell is. Some scientists say the chemicals that cause that smell
are potentially harmful to us! Still we like to enjoy that aroma that
says "New!" to our senses. People like it so much, in fact, that you
can buy bottles of "New Car Smell" to spray in your not-so-new car,
just so your nose can be deceived.

For some reason, we tend to like new years as well. There is a promise
of a fresh beginning. We have a clean slate just waiting for us to
reach out and make our mark. Or so it seems. At some point, however, we
come to realize that turning a page on a calendar doesn't really change
our lives. The problems that were there the year before don't magically
disappear when the clock strikes 12 midnight on New Year's Eve. It's a
new year, but it's the same old us, living the same old lives.

I want a new start. I don't want "New Life Smell" sprayed on my old
life; I want a real new beginning. And I know where to find it. The
apostle Paul wrote: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come" (2
Corinthians 5:17). In another letter, he told the Christians in Rome:
"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order
that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, we too may live a new life" (Romans 6:4). God doesn't merely
spray a new smell on an old life. He lets us be born again, giving us a
completely new life. The old has passed away; the new has come.

Only God can make things new

Those of us who are already in Christ can also get that new beginning.
The apostle John wrote: "If we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his
Son, purifies us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). Jesus purifies me, wipes
the slate clean, forgives my sin and lets me start all over.
Continually. As long as I stay in contact with him.

This is the time of year when people wish one another a happy new year.
Instead of that, I'd like to wish you a happy new life, new life in
Christ. If you're not sure how to find that new life, write to me at
tim@hopeforlife.org or leave a comment on our blog at
www.hopeforlife.org. Let's celebrate together a happy new life!

come!"

Morning & Evening -- John 7:37 and Jeremiah 8:20

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

MORNING:

"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and
cried, saying, if any man thirst, let him come unto me and
drink."
-- John 7:37

Patience had her perfect work in the Lord Jesus, and until the last day
of the feast he pleaded with the Jews, even as on this last day of the
year he pleads with us, and waits to be gracious to us. Admirable
indeed is the longsuffering of the Saviour in bearing with some of us
year after year, notwithstanding our provocations, rebellions, and
resistance of his Holy Spirit. Wonder of wonders that we are still in
the land of mercy!

Pity expressed herself most plainly, for Jesus cried, which implies not
only the loudness of his voice, but the tenderness of his tones. He
entreats us to be reconciled. "We pray you," says the Apostle, "as
though God did beseech you by us." What earnest, pathetic terms are
these! How deep must be the love which makes the Lord weep over
sinners, and like a mother woo his children to his bosom! Surely at the
call of such a cry our willing hearts will come.

Provision is made most plenteously; all is provided that man can need
to quench his soul's thirst. To his conscience the atonement brings
peace; to his understanding the gospel brings the richest instruction;
to his heart the person of Jesus is the noblest object of affection; to
the whole man the truth as it is in Jesus supplies the purest
nutriment. Thirst is terrible, but Jesus can remove it. Though the soul
were utterly famished, Jesus could restore it.

Proclamation is made most freely, that every thirsty one is welcome. No
other distinction is made but that of thirst. Whether it be the thirst
of avarice, ambition, pleasure, knowledge, or rest, he who suffers from
it is invited. The thirst may be bad in itself, and be no sign of
grace, but rather a mark of inordinate sin longing to be gratified with
deeper draughts of lust; but it is not goodness in the creature which
brings him the invitation, the Lord Jesus sends it freely, and without
respect of persons.

Personality is declared most fully. The sinner must come to Jesus, not
to works, ordinances, or doctrines, but to a personal Redeemer, who his
own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree. The bleeding,
dying, rising Saviour, is the only star of hope to a sinner. Oh for
grace to come now and drink, ere the sun sets upon the year's last day!

No waiting or preparation is so much as hinted at. Drinking represents
a reception for which no fitness is required. A fool, a thief, a harlot
can drink; and so sinfulness of character is no bar to the invitation
to believe in Jesus. We want no golden cup, no bejewelled chalice, in
which to convey the water to the thirsty; the mouth of poverty is
welcome to stoop down and quaff the flowing flood. Blistered, leprous,
filthy lips may touch the stream of divine love; they cannot pollute
it, but shall themselves be purified. Jesus is the fount of hope. Dear
reader, hear the dear Redeemer's loving voice as he cries to each of
us,

"IF ANY MAN THIRST,
LET HIM
COME UNTO ME
AND DRINK."

EVENING:

"The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not
saved."
-- Jeremiah 8:20

Not saved! Dear reader, is this your mournful plight? Warned of the
judgment to come, bidden to escape for your life, and yet at this
moment not saved! You know the way of salvation, you read it in the
Bible, you hear it from the pulpit, it is explained to you by friends,
and yet you neglect it, and therefore you are not saved. You will be
without excuse when the Lord shall judge the quick and dead. The Holy
Spirit has given more or less of blessing upon the word which has been
preached in your hearing, and times of refreshing have come from the
divine presence, and yet you are without Christ. All these hopeful
seasons have come and gone-your summer and your harvest have past-and
yet you are not saved. Years have followed one another into eternity,
and your last year will soon be here: youth has gone, manhood is going,
and yet you are not saved. Let me ask you-will you ever be saved? Is
there any likelihood of it? Already the most propitious seasons have
left you unsaved; will other occasions alter your condition? Means have
failed with you-the best of means, used perseveringly and with the
utmost affection-what more can be done for you? Affliction and
prosperity have alike failed to impress you; tears and prayers and
sermons have been wasted on your barren heart. Are not the
probabilities dead against your ever being saved? Is it not more than
likely that you will abide as you are till death for ever bars the door
of hope? Do you recoil from the supposition? Yet it is a most
reasonable one: he who is not washed in so many waters will in all
probability go filthy to his end. The convenient time never has come,
why should it ever come? It is logical to fear that it never will
arrive, and that Felix like, you will find no convenient season till
you are in hell. O bethink you of what that hell is, and of the dread
probability that you will soon be cast into it!

Reader, suppose you should die unsaved, your doom no words can picture.
Write out your dread estate in tears and blood, talk of it with groans
and gnashing of teeth: you will be punished with everlasting
destruction from the glory of the Lord, and from the glory of his
power. A brother's voice would fain startle you into earnestness. O be
wise, be wise in time, and ere another year begins, believe in Jesus,
who is able to save to the uttermost. Consecrate these last hours to
lonely thought, and if deep repentance be bred in you, it will be well;
and if it lead to a humble faith in Jesus, it will be best of all. O
see to it that this year pass not away, and you an unforgiven spirit.
Let not the new year's midnight peals sound upon a joyless spirit! Now,
NOW, NOW believe, and live.

"ESCAPE FOR THY LIFE;
LOOK NOT BEHIND THEE,

My Utmost For His Highest : "Yesterday"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 31, 2008

YESTERDAY

The God of Israel will be your rereward.

Isaiah 52:12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+52:12&sr=1

Security from Yesterday. "God requireth that which is past." At the
end of the year we turn with eagerness to all that God has for the
future, and yet anxiety is apt to arise from remembering the
yesterdays. Our present enjoyment of God's grace is apt to be checked
by the memory of yesterday's sins and blunders. But God is the God of
our yesterdays, and He allows the memory of them in order to turn the
past into a ministry of spiritual culture for the future. God reminds
us of the past lest we get into a shallow security in the present.

Security for To-morrow. "For the Lord will go before you." This is a
gracious revelation, that God will garrison where we have failed to.
He will watch lest things trip us up again into like failure, as they
assuredly would do if He were not our rereward. God's hand reaches
back to the past and makes a clearing-house for conscience.

Security for To-day. "For ye shall not go out with haste." As we go
forth into the coming year, let it not be in the haste of impetuous,
unremembering delight, nor with the flight of impulsive
thoughtlessness, but with the patient power of knowing that the God
of Israel will go before us. Our yesterdays present irreparable
things to us; it is true that we have lost opportunities which will
never return, but God can transform this destructive anxiety into a
constructive thoughtfulness for the future. Let the past sleep, but
let it sleep on the bosom of Christ.

Leave the Irreparable Past in His hands, and step out into the
Irresistible Future with Him.

PARTNERS IN CHRIST

Philemon 17-25
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philemon+17-25

Father of mercy,

Holy God and Father, have mercy and show kindness to those who are
in bondage - those who are in prison, those who are enslaved to
other people, and those who are enslaved to self and to sin.

Teach us to show genuine hospitality to each other, never keeping
score or grumbling, understanding that you, Father, are freely
entertaining us in your house, the earth, and feeding us at your
table with its bounty. Fill our hearts with love for our brethren
and our lips with prayer in their behalf.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with our spirits. In his name
I ask. Amen.

Go Into All the World

[Some of the oldest and best Greek manuscripts of the Gospel
of Mark end the book after the previous verse.] Jesus rose
from death early on the first day of the week. Jesus showed
himself first to Mary from Magdala. One time in the past,
Jesus had forced seven demons to leave Mary. After Mary saw
Jesus, she went and told his followers. His followers were
very sad and were crying. But Mary told them that Jesus was
alive. Mary said that she had seen Jesus. But the followers
did not believe her. Later, Jesus showed himself to two
followers while they were walking in the country. But Jesus
did not look the same as before he was killed. These
followers went back to the other followers and told them what
happened. Again, the followers did not believe them. Later
Jesus showed himself to the eleven followers while they were
eating. Jesus criticized the followers because they had
little faith. They were stubborn and refused to believe the
people that said Jesus had risen from death. Jesus said to
the followers, "Go everywhere in the world. Tell the Good
News to every person. Any person that believes and is
baptized will be saved. But the person that does not believe
will be judged guilty. And the people that believe will be
able to do these things as proof: They will use my name to
force demons out of people. They will speak in languages they
never learned. Those people will hold snakes without being
hurt. And those people will drink poison without being hurt.
Those people will touch sick people, and the sick people will
be healed." After the Lord Jesus said these things to the
followers, he was carried up into heaven. There, Jesus sat at
the right side of God. The followers went everywhere in the
world and told the Good News to people. And the Lord helped
them. The Lord proved that the Good News they told people was
true. He proved this by giving the followers power to do
miracles.

-- Mark 16:9-20 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
What an incredibly wonderful message. Jesus begins as a nobody in a
little-regarded place working with insignificant people and changes the
world. As powerful a story as this is, we must remember that the story
and the power are not ended. Jesus is still looking for people the
world regards as insignificant and uses them to change the world. How
can he do this? Because he is the Christ, the Son of God, who chose to
minister in Galilee and the surrounding area, to be crucified in
Jerusalem, and to be raised from the dead and reign over all the earth.
Let's commit to joining him in his work of transforming the world by
God's grace.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
As I end this year, dear Father, I want to thank you for the ways you
have touched my heart and used my life. However, dear God, I fervently
pray that you will use me in this coming year in ways I cannot imagine.
I want to be part of your work of changing the world. Please wholly use
my life until you call me home. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: New Trust 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
New Trust 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O LORD, have never abandoned anyone who searches for you. Psalm 9:10 NLT

Yesterday this series began on the word trust as it occurs in the Bible; the point made that we must choose to trust in the God of the Bible. As a minister, I meet so many people who struggle with life and cannot find a place to turn for answers. I know, through the Bible and experience that Christ is sufficient for all their needs, that He alone holds all the answers to the problems of life, and that, by faith, they need to trust in Christ alone. I watch many times, however, as people choose other methods to try and solve their dilemmas. Of course, this is always a dead-end path and the person continues to struggle.

I will not to pretend to know all the reasons why one person chooses and another rejects the truth of the Bible, but I do know this. The more a person knows about God, the more that person will understand and actually like the person of God. God is very likeable. (Please, I mean no irreverence or disrespect in that statement.) God will stand the test of time in being faithful. His love truly does endure forever. God loves the unlovable. He gives mercy and grace to sinners. He mends broken hearts. If you and I will ever take the time to get to know the God who created the universe, we will love Him more and more.

Have you been trusting God lately? If not, maybe it is not as much of a trust problem as it is a knowledge problem. Perhaps you should get to know God better, and then you will love and trust Him more.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Is It Really Over?, by Tom Norvell

The disciples had been with Jesus for three years. They had watched Him
perform His miracles, witnessed His encounters with the religious
leaders, and experienced His kind and compassionate nature. They had
asked Him questions and heard His answers. They had seen Him walk on
water and disappear into the mountains. They had been shocked when they
found Him talking with a woman from Samaria, and perturbed with Him
when He took too much time with children.

For three years they dreamed with Him about the coming Kingdom, even
though their images of the future were quite different. They had
envisioned positions of power and prestige, but He had reminded them
that their role should be that of a servant. The disciples had given up
their homes, jobs, and ambitions to follow this One who promised to use
them to change the world.

Then, as they stood by paralyzed by fear, He was arrested. He was
accused of blasphemy. He was tried and convicted. He was beaten and
tortured and ridiculed and humiliated. He was crucified. He died. He
was buried.

In those quiet difficult moments after His death, surely they struggled
with what they had seen, with what they had done, and what they had not
done. Questions and doubt must have filled their minds.

"We thought ... "

"What about ... "

"Why ... "

"We expected ... "

"We hoped ... "

"Is it really over?"

Within a few hours most of us will see the end of the year (if it has
not already occurred where you are). With the turn of a page on the
calendar, and the tick of the clock, the old year will be gone and a
new year will be ushered in. As the transition takes place some of us
will be disappointed with the way things have turned out during the
last twelve months. Some will be amazed that the year has gone so
rapidly. Some will be filled with regret. Some will be relieved.

"We thought we would have been better off financially."

"We meant to work less and spend more time with our family."

"We intended to get more involved in our church."

"We expected to make more progress on our marriage relationship."

"We hoped ... "

"We wish ... "

"Is it really over?"

"Is it really over?"

There is good news.

As the disciples struggled with their questions, doubts, and regrets
they received the greatest news they could have ever imagined. "The
tomb is empty! He is alive!"

As we deal with all the things that we should have done, could have
done, wish we had done, and ought to have done, the news is also good:
"Happy New Year!" We get another chance.

The year has ended, but your life is not over! It's a new year. Make
the most of it.

Morning & Evening -- Ecclesiastes 7:8 and 2 Samuel 2:26

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

MORNING:

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof."
-- Ecclesiastes 7:8

Look at David's Lord and Master; see his beginning. He was despised and
rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Would you
see the end? He sits at his Father's right hand, expecting until his
enemies be made his footstool. "As he is, so are we also in this
world." You must bear the cross, or you shall never wear the crown; you
must wade through the mire, or you shall never walk the golden
pavement. Cheer up, then, poor Christian. "Better is the end of a thing
than the beginning thereof." See that creeping worm, how contemptible
its appearance! It is the beginning of a thing. Mark that insect with
gorgeous wings, playing in the sunbeams, sipping at the flower bells,
full of happiness and life; that is the end thereof. That caterpillar
is yourself, until you are wrapped up in the chrysalis of death; but
when Christ shall appear you shall be like him, for you shall see him
as he is. Be content to be like him, a worm and no man, that like him
you may be satisfied when you wake up in his likeness. That
rough-looking diamond is put upon the wheel of the lapidary. He cuts it
on all sides. It loses much-much that seemed costly to itself. The king
is crowned; the diadem is put upon the monarch's head with trumpet's
joyful sound. A glittering ray flashes from that coronet, and it beams
from that very diamond which was just now so sorely vexed by the
lapidary. You may venture to compare yourself to such a diamond, for
you are one of God's people; and this is the time of the cutting
process. Let faith and patience have their perfect work, for in the day
when the crown shall be set upon the head of the King, Eternal,
Immortal, Invisible, one ray of glory shall stream from you. "They
shall be mine," saith the Lord, "in the day when I make up my jewels."
"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof."

EVENING:

"Knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter
end?"
-- 2 Samuel 2:26

If, O my reader! thou art merely a professor, and not a possessor of
the faith that is in Christ Jesus, the following lines are a true ketch
of thine end.

You are a respectable attendant at a place of worship; you go because
others go, not because your heart is right with God. This is your
beginning. I will suppose that for the next twenty or thirty years you
will be spared to go on as you do now, professing religion by an
outward attendance upon the means of grace, but having no heart in the
matter. Tread softly, for I must show you the deathbed of such a one as
yourself. Let us gaze upon him gently. A clammy sweat is on his brow,
and he wakes up crying, "O God, it is hard to die. Did you send for my
minister?" "Yes, he is coming." The minister comes. "Sir, I fear that I
am dying!" "Have you any hope?" "I cannot say that I have. I fear to
stand before my God; oh! pray for me." The prayer is offered for him
with sincere earnestness, and the way of salvation is for the
ten-thousandth time put before him, but before he has grasped the rope,
I see him sink. I may put my finger upon those cold eyelids, for they
will never see anything here again. But where is the man, and where are
the man's true eyes? It is written, "In hell he lifted up his eyes,
being in torment." Ah! why did he not lift up his eyes before? Because
he was so accustomed to hear the gospel that his soul slept under it.
Alas! if you should lift up your eyes there, how bitter will be your
wailings. Let the Saviour's own words reveal the woe: "Father Abraham,
send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool
my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame." There is a frightful
meaning in those words. May you never have to spell it out by the red
light of Jehovah's wrath!
