Authority in the Name of Jesus (2)

Authority in the Name of Jesus (2)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bible Verses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Acts 3:6 But Peter said, Silver and gold I do not possess,
but what I have, this I give to you: In the name of Jesus
Christ the Nazarene rise up and walk.
4:12 And there is salvation in no other, for neither is
there another name under heaven given among men in which we
must be saved.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Part 2 of 2)
What does this name signify? This name signifies authority
and power. Why does this name signify authority and power?
Philippians 2:10-11 says, "That in the name of Jesus every
knee should bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, and every tongue should openly confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father." This is
authority. Every knee has to bow to the name of Jesus, and
everyone has to call Jesus the Lord because of His name.
Hence, the name of Jesus denotes the fact that God has given
Him the all-transcending authority and power.

In Luke 10:17 the disciples said to the Lord, "Lord, even the
demons are subject to us in Your name." It was a great thing
for the disciples to cast out demons in the name of the Lord.
The demons may not be afraid of many names on earth. But when
the disciples did anything in the name of the Lord Jesus, the
demons were subject to them. Later the Lord explained why His
name made the demons subject to them. He said, "I have given
you the authority to tread over all the power of the enemy"
(v. 19). Hence, the name equals authority. Where the name is,
there is authority.

This is not all. Even the rulers among the Jews knew this.
After Peter raised the lame man, the rulers called the
apostles before them the next day and asked, "By what power
or in what name did you do this?" (Acts 4:7). In other words,
what authority did they have in telling the man to stand up
and walk? They knew that with every name there was authority.
Hence, the name of Jesus denotes all the authority that God
has committed to Him. We are not saying that the name itself
is the authority; the effect of the name is authority.

Today's Verse : Isaiah 2:22

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 9, 2009

VERSE:
Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of
what account is he?
-- Isaiah 2:22
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Isaiah+2:22

THOUGHT:
"If only I had a friend." "If only my father hadn't left." "If
only she was more supportive." "If only..." People can fail us, but
we still pin so many of our hopes on them. We are all fallible and
mortal. So while we are involved in the lives of other people,
let's also remember to keep our hopes connected to the Son of God,
who "defeated death and brought immortality and life to light" and
who will "never leave or forsake" us.

PRAYER:
Forgive me, dear Father, when I have pinned my well-being and
happiness on being accepted by a certain group or loved by a
certain person. I know my only lasting hope is found in Jesus, in
whose name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: New Year 4

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
New Year 4
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 NIV

That verse needs to be a key memory verse of every Christian! If you don't know by now in your Christian walk that God is who He says He is; that He never changes; that His love endures forever; that the promises He gave to Abraham, Joseph, Noah and David are ours today; that whatever you going through today, He can see you through it; if you aren't fully convinced by faith of what He can do in your life.... then you need to get growing in Him!

God wants to be all you need! He wants to richly supply you with His blessings of life. He will reward those who will fully trust in Him. We evidence our faith in Him (and God will know we trust Him fully) when we live by faith.

Something is bothering you today, isn't it? You have struggles in your life, worries, fears, disappointments, challenges, and burdens that no one but God knows. You have been trying to go on, but if the truth were known you are tired of walking alone.

Then quit! Quit trying to be Superman or Superwoman! Stop right now and admit to God that you are nothing without Him! Tell Him you need His help! Tell Him you fully realize He is all sufficient! Tell Him you recognize His mighty power and are willing to place yourself fully under His tender care!

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, have a little fun and go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

What Could Have Been, by Dr. Rebecca Dowden

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily
entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for
us (Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV).

"Honey, look at that precious little girl." The blonde haired
three-year-old girl twirled around the aisle in her frilly pink skirt.
Everyone in the restaurant chuckled.

"Yes, she's adorable," my husband replied and gave me a questioning
glance.

"I am fine. You know how I am. I just get a little sad when I see such
an adorable baby girl." My eyes watered up a little bit, and I turned
my head away from him.

Driving home from the restaurant my husband asked, "What are you
thinking about? You're awfully quiet."

"I hate to even start up this conversation." I looked out the window at
the passing lights and began to cry.

"What, honey, what is it?" my husband asked.

"It's just that little girl from the restaurant tonight. It always gets
me to thinking, you know." I was feeling the old familiar pain of mixed
emotions.

"I know. I have the same feelings. For a moment there, I wished we had
a little girl, too," he said. I could see the muscles in his jaw
tighten as he tried to figure out what to say to me, knowing there was
no way to solve anything. There was nothing to solve, just a lot of
ambivalent feelings.

"I know, sweetie. It is just hard to not think about 'what if?'" I
wanted to talk about the subject, but at the same time, I didn't. We
had covered this ground so many times.

"'What if?' is a dangerous place. We can't just make a u-turn and go
back in time. We did what we believed God was telling us to do. We have
to trust Him." My husband sounded tired and sad. "It makes me feel so
bad when you talk like you have regrets. I feel responsible somehow."

"You're not solely responsible; it was our joint decision. I know at
forty-four the option to have our own child doesn't exist. That ship
has sailed." I was speaking the truth about the situation, but the
truth of my heart was I did sometimes blame him. I didn't want to trust
God had given us direction; I wanted to blame somebody because I was
hurting.

"We prayed about having a child for so many years, and neither one of
us ever felt like God was leading us to have one," he said.

"I know." The silence between us filled up the car.

"What do you want to do? I don't understand what you need in these
moments. Other times you tell me you are so clear about the subject,
and you're glad we didn't have a child." My husband voice was breaking
up by now.

"I know it is difficult to understand. It confuses me too when these
feelings just pop-up out of nowhere. Most of the time I am so clear
about God's will and plan for and then ..." I didn't know what else to
say.

"What, then what? Please tell me what happens. What makes it unclear?"
he asked.

After a long pause, I said, "FEAR. That is what happens. I get afraid."
The tears began to run down my face because I had hit the real source
of pain: fear. I knew fear was my greatest enemy, my ongoing foe.

"Afraid of what, sweetheart?" he asked.

"Afraid I won't be loved." I sobbed.

We pulled into the driveway. He reached over and held me in his arms.
"Not loved? What are you talking about? Precious, everyone loves you,"
he said. His shirt became soaked with my tears.

"But nobody will ever love me like a child would, and someday, I might
be alone without you and my parents -- the people who truly love me." I
felt so selfish saying these words, but they were how I felt.

"What about Philip?" my husband asked.

"I love him dearly, and I know he loves me, but he is YOUR son. I
didn't give birth to him. He had another mother. He will always love
her even though she is dead."

"And the girls?" He knew how much my nieces meant to me.

"I love them, of course, and I know they love me, but ..." I was crying
so hard by now I couldn't finish my sentence.

While lying in bed that night, I silently prayed, God, I need peace and
clarity about having a child. I know I can't physically have a child
now, but if it is your will for us to have a child through any other
means, please make it clear to me. My husband rolled over and put his
arms around me.

"Sweetie, I know you are hurting. Let's continue to pray and ask God to
make it clear to us about a child," he said.

"I just did." I smiled and drifted off to sleep.

"Afraid I won't be loved." I sobbed.

The next morning I got up and hadn't thought about the previous night's
conversation. After making myself a cup of tea, I turned on my phone.
Someone had left me a text message.

"I love you and was just thinking about you." My niece had written.
Tears streamed down my face as I read the message over and over. I
began to get dressed for work as her love continued to fill up my
heart.

Just as I was about to leave, Philip showed up at the backdoor.

"Hey, what are you up to?" I asked.

"I had to pick up something for Dad, but I was wondering if we could
all get together for lunch this weekend?" he asked.

"Sure, honey, that sounds great," I said. My heart was beaming with
joy.

"I better run. Dad is waiting for me." He hugged me tight for longer
than usual. "I love you," he said still holding me tight.

"I love you, too, sweetie." Tears ran down my cheeks. "I love you,
too." He grabbed the toolkit from the kitchen counter and quickly
dashed out the door, waving goodbye.

I dropped into the kitchen chair and began to praise God. "Thank you,
Lord, for your goodness, for your love just when I need it. I am LOVED.
Thank you for all the love in my life and your beautiful provisions."

On my way to work, I called my husband. "Hey, Honey, I am driving down
the road."

"That's good. You're on your way to work?" He was at peace, as if last
night's conversation never happened.

"Yep, I'm headed straight down this road," I said, "I don't see any
detours or u-turns ahead."

Morning & Evening -- Exodus 28:38 and Song of Solomon 1:2

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, January 8, 2009

MORNING:

"The iniquity of the holy things."
-- Exodus 28:38

What a veil is lifted up by these words, and what a disclosure is made!
It will be humbling and profitable for us to pause awhile and see this
sad sight. The iniquities of our public worship, its hypocrisy,
formality, lukewarmness, irreverence, wandering of heart and
forgetfulness of God, what a full measure have we there! Our work for
the Lord, its emulation, selfishness, carelessness, slackness,
unbelief, what a mass of defilement is there! Our private devotions,
their laxity, coldness, neglect, sleepiness, and vanity, what a
mountain of dead earth is there! If we looked more carefully we should
find this iniquity to be far greater than appears at first sight. Dr.
Payson, writing to his brother, says, "My parish, as well as my heart,
very much resembles the garden of the sluggard; and what is worse, I
find that very many of my desires for the melioration of both, proceed
either from pride or vanity or indolence. I look at the weeds which
overspread my garden, and breathe out an earnest wish that they were
eradicated. But why? What prompts the wish? It may be that I may walk
out and say to myself, 'In what fine order is my garden kept!' This is
pride. Or, it may be that my neighbours may look over the wall and say,
'How finely your garden flourishes!' This is vanity. Or I may wish for
the destruction of the weeds, because I am weary of pulling them up.
This is indolence." So that even our desires after holiness may be
polluted by ill motives. Under the greenest sods worms hide themselves;
we need not look long to discover them. How cheering is the thought,
that when the High Priest bore the iniquity of the holy things he wore
upon his brow the words, "HOLINESS TO THE LORD:" and even so while
Jesus bears our sin, he presents before his Father's face not our
unholiness, but his own holiness. O for grace to view our great High
Priest by the eye of faith!

EVENING:

"Thy love is better than wine."
-- Song of Solomon 1:2

Nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship with Christ. He
has enjoyment as others have in the common mercies of life, he can be
glad both in God's gifts and God's works; but in all these separately,
yea, and in all of them added together, he doth not find such
substantial delight as in the matchless person of his Lord Jesus. He
has wine which no vineyard on earth ever yielded; he has bread which
all the corn-fields of Egypt could never bring forth. Where can such
sweetness be found as we have tasted in communion with our Beloved? In
our esteem, the joys of earth are little better than husks for swine
compared with Jesus, the heavenly manna. We would rather have one
mouthful of Christ's love, and a sip of his fellowship, than a whole
world full of carnal delights. What is the chaff to the wheat? What is
the sparkling paste to the true diamond? What is a dream to the
glorious reality? What is time's mirth, in its best trim, compared to
our Lord Jesus in his most despised estate? If you know anything of the
inner life, you will confess that our highest, purest, and most
enduring joys must be the fruit of the tree of life which is in the
midst of the Paradise of God. No spring yields such sweet water as that
well of God which was digged with the soldier's spear. All earthly
bliss is of the earth earthy, but the comforts of Christ's presence are
like himself, heavenly. We can review our communion with Jesus, and
find no regrets of emptiness therein; there are no dregs in this wine,
no dead flies in this ointment. The joy of the Lord is solid and
enduring. Vanity hath not looked upon it, but discretion and prudence
testify that it abideth the test of years, and is in time and in
eternity worthy to be called "the only true delight." For nourishment,
consolation, exhilaration, and refreshment, no wine can rival the love
of Jesus. Let us drink to the full this evening.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Does My Sacrifice Live?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 8, 2009

DOES MY SACRIFICE LIVE?

And Abraham built an altar . . and bound Isaac his son.

Genesis 22:9
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ge+22:9&sr=1

This incident is a picture of the blunder we make in thinking that
the final thing God wants of us is the sacrifice of death. what God
wants is the sac rifice through death which enables us to do what
Jesus did, viz., sacrifice our lives. Not - I am willing to go to
death with Thee, but - I am willing to be identified with Thy death
so that I may sacrifice my life to God. We seem to think that God
wants us to give up things! God purified Abraham from this blunder,
and the same discipline goes on in our lives. God nowhere tells us to
give up things for the sake of giving them up. He tells us to give
them up for the sake of the only thing worth having - viz., life with
Himself. It is a question of loosening the bands that hinder the
life, and immediately those bands are loosened by identification with
the death of Jesus, we enter into a relationship with God whereby we
can sacrifice our lives to Him.

It is of no value to God to give Him your life for death. He wants
you to be a "living sacrifice," to let Him have all your powers that
have been saved and sanctified through Jesus. This is the thing that
is acceptable to God.

Praying with Paul : "God's Righteous Judgment"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT

Romans 1:32
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:32

Dear Father, righteous judge,

Who could argue against your righteous judgment? Who would claim
that those who refuse to see truth should not be left in their
blindness? Though they know that those who pervert truth deserve to
die, they not only continue to practice perversion, they also
glorify it!

Holy God, your judgment is just! Have mercy on these derelict
people to chasten them with judgments that will bring them to
repentance. And dear Father, save all of your people, your holy
remnant, from the flood of filth and enmity toward you that
surrounds us every day!

Thank you, God, that your judgment is just, but thank you also
that your mercy is available to all.

Thank you for your remedy for sin and death! Only you, God, could
do this! It is in the name of Jesus and by his authority that we
have such boldness to come to you, asking these things according to
his will. Amen.

WJD! -- God of the Unexpected -- Matthew 2:1-2

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

God of the Unexpected

Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea. He was born
during the time when Herod was king. After Jesus was born,
some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. The wise men
asked people, "Where is the new baby that is the king of the
Jews? We saw the star that shows he was born. We saw the star
rise in the sky in the east. We came to worship him."

-- Matthew 2:1-2 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
God does the unexpected! There was no way anyone would suspect -- much
less expect -- that Easterners would come to worship a Jewish King,
especially a baby one. No normal person would have expected a King to
be born in Bethlehem, a little obscure town of insignificance. No
faithful Israelite would have ever believed astrologers would be led to
the true God through their false, stargazing-worship. (Remember that
astrology was steadfastly condemned under Mosaic Law as one of the acts
of divination -- magically foretelling the future! Deut. 18:9-15) But
then, God doesn't have to do things the way normal Israelites,
Gentiles, or modern people do them. Aren't we glad God is full of
surprises! Aren't we glad he sent Jesus as his greatest Surprise!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Sovereign and Almighty Lord, please forgive me for trying to tame you
and make you predictable. You have always been full of surprises.
Please "surprise" me in my lifetime by bringing your salvation to every
nation, language, tribe, and people in our world. In the name of Jesus
I pray. Amen.
