Today's Verse : Philippians 2:14-15

November 28, 2007

VERSE:
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may
become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a
crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in
the universe.
-- Philippians 2:14-15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+2:14-15

THOUGHT:
"Don't complain or argue!" We don't normally associate these
things with purity and blamelessness. Paul was extraordinarily
close to the Philippians and knew them well. He knew their
weaknesses and shortcomings. He also knew the destructive power
that complaining and arguing have on the life of an otherwise
vibrant community of Christians. Let's heed his warning today, as
we see church after church taken under by the negative and cynical
spirit that pervades modern culture.

PRAYER:
Forgive me and cleanse me, O God, from my argumentative spirit.
Please empower me with your Spirit to use my speech only to bless
and to build up, never to tear down or discourage. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Pray 2

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:6-7 NIV

I think the phrase "pray to your Father, who is unseen" is an important concept in understanding prayer. When I call a friend for advice, I get a live voice over the phone. When I ask my wife's opinion of a matter, most likely she is close enough to reach out and touch her hand. Even when I correspond with someone over the Internet (like you), I know someone is on the other end of the communication.

With prayer, I'm talking to God who is unseen. That brings a whole other level of trust into my prayers. I have to trust that He is listening. I must have faith that He will respond. I even have to trust that He really does care. Faith is a crucial part of an effective prayer life.

I have received numerous emails from people over the years that have said they just don't know it their prayers are going anywhere. I certainly understand the feeling. Although God is a very personal God, caring about us on the most intimate level, sometimes it seems like He is a million miles away. And, again, I must say that this is what faith is all about. Faith is believing in what we cannot see. It's trusting when it makes no sense. It's relying on God over our circumstances even though our circumstances may appear to be so much more real than even God seems at the time.

An effective prayer life continues to pray even when it doesn't seem that your prayers are being heard. We pray in faith, believing that God is who He says He is, that He will do what He says He will, and then we adjust our lives accordingly.

Oh, Lord, teach us to pray!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Love Beyond the Ledger, by Ron Rose

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent
his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since
God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever
seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love
is made complete in us (1 John 4:10-12 TNIV).

There was a time, before Television (BT), when families in the US would
gather in their living rooms and listen to radio dramas. "One Man's
Family," "Fibber Magee and Molly," "Groucho Marx," and "Burns and
Allen," were just a few. One of the favorites was "The Jack Benny
Program."

Jack Benny eventually made the transition to television as one of
America's most popular comedians. His on-air persona presented him as a
penny-pinching skinflint who would sooner die than part with a dollar.
Yet in real life, his character was anything but -- the flesh and blood
Jack Benny was a generous and kind man who treasured his friends, gave
generously to charities, and dearly loved his wife.

Jack Benny (real name Benjamin Kubelsky) was married to Sayde Marks
(better known as Mary Livingstone, the character she played on her
husband's radio show) for 48 years. Their marriage was far from
perfect. She was a quick-witted, high-maintenance, and a demanding
woman. He was a bit of a philanderer.

After his death, Sayde claimed Benny's signature gesture of holding one
hand to the side of his face came about from his attempting to conceal
scratch marks she inflicted after she caught him on the phone with one
of his female admirers.

Yet despite their shortcomings and imperfections, Jack loved his wife
and wanted her to know his love would last a lifetime and beyond. For
years, Sayde had received a long-stemmed red rose everyday. Then, even
after Jack died in December of 1974, she continued to receive a rose.

When she called to remind the florist of her husband's death, she
learned that Jack had included a provision for the flowers in his will.
One red rose was to be delivered to Sadye every day for the rest of her
life.

Sayde passed away nine years later. Nothing could stop Jack's love.

Too many of us have grown jaded and shallow in our love. We are often
trapped in ledger sheet giving instead of genuine loving. You do this
and I will repay you by doing that. Somewhere in the back of your mind,
are you keeping track of giving and receiving, making sure to keep
everything balanced?

You can see this ledger sheet giving this time of the year. You give me
a present worth $100 and I must give something of equal value. That
kind of giving robs us of the joy. It's void of spirit. We give, but
there is something empty in the experience. Why do we put up with it?

So don't.

Do you really believe it?

God has shown us how to give beyond the ledger sheet ... to break the
mold ... to be an outrageous, unexpected giver who loves people just
the way they are.

Giving up the ledger sheet habit is not easy, but it can be done. God
has shown you how; he pioneered the way. He gave first! If you have
unwrapped the gift of his love, you are a new version of what you used
to be. Call it version 2.0. You now have an outrageous giver inside
you, a generous and grateful reflection of his gift to you.

Remember, he still loves you just the way you are, now it's your turn!

Do you believe it?

Do you really believe it?

Tis' the season! So live as if you believe it!

Morning & Evening -- Zechariah 3:1 and Ephesians 1:7

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

MORNING:

"Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the
Lord."
-- Zechariah 3:1

In Joshua the high priest we see a picture of each and every child of
God, who has been made nigh by the blood of Christ, and has been taught
to minister in holy things, and enter into that which is within the
veil. Jesus has made us priests and kings unto God, and even here upon
earth we exercise the priesthood of consecrated living and hallowed
service. But this high priest is said to be "standing before the angel
of the Lord," that is, standing to minister. This should be the
perpetual position of every true believer. Every place is now God's
temple, and his people can as truly serve him in their daily
employments as in his house. They are to be always "ministering,"
offering the spiritual sacrifice of prayer and praise, and presenting
themselves a "living sacrifice." But notice where it is that Joshua
stands to minister, it is before the angel of Jehovah. It is only
through a mediator that we poor defiled ones can ever become priests
unto God. I present what I have before the messenger, the angel of the
covenant, the Lord Jesus; and through him my prayers find acceptance
wrapped up in his prayers; my praises become sweet as they are bound up
with bundles of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia from Christ's own garden.
If I can bring him nothing but my tears, he will put them with his own
tears in his own bottle for he once wept; if I can bring him nothing
but my groans and sighs, he will accept these as an acceptable
sacrifice, for he once was broken in heart, and sighed heavily in
spirit. I myself, standing in him, am accepted in the Beloved; and all
my polluted works, though in themselves only objects of divine
abhorrence, are so received, that God smelleth a sweet savour. He is
content and I am blessed. See, then, the position of the Christian-"a
priest- standing-before the angel of the Lord."

EVENING:

"The forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his
grace."
-- Ephesians 1:7

Could there be a sweeter word in any language than that word
"forgiveness," when it sounds in a guilty sinner's ear, like the silver
notes of jubilee to the captive Israelite? Blessed, for ever blessed be
that dear star of pardon which shines into the condemned cell, and
gives the perishing a gleam of hope amid the midnight of despair! Can
it be possible that sin, such sin as mine, can be forgiven, forgiven
altogether, and for ever? Hell is my portion as a sinner-there is no
possibility of my escaping from it while sin remains upon me-can the
load of guilt be uplifted, the crimson stain removed? Can the
adamantine stones of my prison-house ever be loosed from their
mortices, or the doors be lifted from their hinges? Jesus tells me that
I may yet be clear. For ever blessed be the revelation of atoning love
which not only tells me that pardon is possible, but that it is secured
to all who rest in Jesus. I have believed in the appointed
propitiation, even Jesus crucified, and therefore my sins are at this
moment, and for ever, forgiven by virtue of his substitutionary pains
and death. What joy is this! What bliss to be a perfectly pardoned
soul! My soul dedicates all her powers to him who of his own
unpurchased love became my surety, and wrought out for me redemption
through his blood. What riches of grace does free forgiveness exhibit!
To forgive at all, to forgive fully, to forgive freely, to forgive for
ever! Here is a constellation of wonders; and when I think of how great
my sins were, how dear were the precious drops which cleansed me from
them, and how gracious was the method by which pardon was sealed home
to me, I am in a maze of wondering worshipping affection. I bow before
the throne which absolves me, I clasp the cross which delivers me, I
serve henceforth all my days the Incarnate God, through whom I am this
night a pardoned soul.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Consecration Of Spiritual Energy"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 27, 2007

THE CONSECRATION OF SPIRITUAL ENERGY

By whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the
world.

Galatians 6:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ga+6:14&sr=1

If I brood on the Cross of Christ, I do not become a subjective
pietist, interested in my own whiteness; I become dominantly
concentrated on Jesus Christ's interests. Our Lord was not a recluse
nor an ascetic, He did not cut Himself off from society, but He was
inwardly disconnected all the time. He was not aloof, but He lived in
an other world. He was so much in the ordinary world that the
religious people of His day called Him a glutton and a wine-bibber.
Our Lord never allowed anything to interfere with His consecration of
spiritual energy.

The counterfeit of consecration is the conscious cutting off of
things with the idea of storing spiritual power for use later on, but
that is a hopeless mistake. The Spirit of God has spoiled the sin of
a great many, yet there is no emancipation, no fullness in their
lives. The kind of religious life we see abroad to-day is entirely
different from the robust holiness of the life of Jesus Christ. "I
pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that
Thou shouldest keep them from the evil." We are to be in the world
but not of it; to he disconnected fundamentally, not externally.

We must never allow anything to interfere with the consecration of
our spiritual energy. Consecration is our part, sanctification is
God's part; and we have deliberately to determine to be interested
only in that in which God is interested. The way to solve perplexing
problems is to ask - Is this the kind of thing in which Jesus Christ
is interested, or the kind of thing in which the spirit that is the
antipodes of Jesus is interested?

Praying with Paul : "A Citizen of Heaven"

A CITIZEN OF HEAVEN

Philippians 3:16-21

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+3:16-21

Dear Father,

I want to join all your holy people in imitating the example of
your apostle Paul, and I want to take notice of people in my own
time who live by the same example.

Thank you, my God, that my citizenship is in heaven, from which I
wait the return of my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you, Father, that he will come to change my lowly body to be
like his glorious body, by the power which enables him to subject
all things to himself.

In the name of Jesus I ask these things. Amen.

WJD! -- Escape Jerusalem, Expect His Coming -- Luke 21:20-28

Escape Jerusalem, Expect His Coming

"You will see armies all around Jerusalem. Then you will know
that the time for the destruction of Jerusalem has come. At
that time, the people in Judea should run away to the
mountains. The people in Jerusalem must leave quickly. If you
are near the city, don't go in! The prophets wrote many
things about the time when God will punish his people. The
time I am telling you about is the time when all these things
must happen. At that time, it will be bad for women that are
pregnant or have small babies. Why? Because very bad times
will come to this land. God will be angry with these people
(the Jews). Some of the people will be killed by soldiers.
Other people will be made prisoners and taken to every
country. The holy city of Jerusalem will be walked on by
non-Jewish people until their time is finished. Amazing
things will happen with the sun, moon, and stars. The people
on earth will feel trapped. The oceans will be upset, and the
people will not know why. People will become afraid. They
will be very worried about what will happen to the world.
Everything in the sky will be changed. Then people will see
the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory.
When these things begin to happen, don't fear. Look up and be
happy! Don't worry. Be happy, because you know that the time
when God will free you is near!"

-- Luke 21:20-28 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus warned that the destruction of Jerusalem would come. The
inhabitants needed to be ready to escape that disaster. Many of the
Christians of Jerusalem followed Jesus' word and did escape to safety
when the time came. So they needed not fear, only look forward to that
day with hope and confidence. But for us, there will also come a time
when he will come again and return in glory with salvation. We, too,
need to look forward to that day with confidence and hope, knowing that
even in our worst moments, the Lord is near and his return is never far
away.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Gracious God and Almighty LORD, I look forward to the day of Jesus'
return in glory. Use me to help others prepare for that day and to be
ready to greet it with confidence. Until then, make my hope in your
Son's return burn brightly in my heart until the sky shines brightly
with his glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.
