=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Fred Factor, by Steve Higginbotham

[You know] how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who
were under the power of the devil, because God was with him (Acts
10:38 TNIV).

Not too long ago, I read a book by Mark Sanborn entitled, "The Fred
Factor." The book is about a mailman who took his job seriously, and
consistently went above and beyond the call of duty in performing his
it. While the book is not a "religious" book, the spiritual and
biblical applications are everywhere.

Consequently, I have been teaching a Wednesday night adult class on the
biblical principles contained in the "Fred Factor," and I have been
challenging people to go out and be a "Fred." It has been interesting
to see how much excitement this class has generated. People have taken
up the challenge of being a "Fred" (translated -- a disciple of Jesus)
and going the second mile with people. I would heartily recommend the
book to you. It is an easy read, being only 112 pages long.

Only after she was gone did I think ...

Well, allow me to share a close encounter I had with being a "Fred"
this past week. My son, Michael, and I went to the courthouse so that
he could get his driving permit. As we stood in line, there was a 16
year-old girl in front of us who was bubbling over with excitement
because she, too, had passed her driving permit. As she stood at the
window, one of the clerks asked her if she had her birth certificate.
She excitedly said, "Yes Ma'am! I sure do!" Then the clerk asked her if
she had her Social Security card. Again, with exuberance, she said,
"Yes Ma'am! I sure do!" Then the clerk said, "That will be $12.00."
Suddenly, the girl's disposition changed. "$12.00? I don't think I have
$12.00. I didn't know I had to pay anything." Well, she began digging
through her wallet and could not come up with $12.00. Finally she
asked, "Can I just run home real quick? I just live a few blocks away
and I'll bring you the money."

Well, can you guess what I did at that point? If you're thinking I gave
her the $12.00 that she needed, keeping her from running home, while
also making a huge impact on her life by having an absolute stranger
help her out, you would be wrong! Nope, I just stood there and watched
her run out of the room and off toward home. Only after she was gone
did I think, "What an opportunity to make a difference! And I missed
it!" I could have kicked myself. Instead of being a "Fred," I was a
"Claude." In fact, with a little reflection, I think I could probably
write a book entitled, "The Claude Factor."

So I'll live and learn, and hopefully be more sensitive to the
opportunities I have to make a difference in the lives of other people.
Not because that's what "Fred" would do, but because that's what Jesus
would do.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers (Galatians
6:10).

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 97:10 and Revelation 3:19

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, June 7, 2008

MORNING:

"Ye that love the Lord hate evil."
-- Psalms 97:10

Thou hast good reason to "hate evil," for only consider what harm it
has already wrought thee. Oh, what a world of mischief sin has brought
into thy heart! Sin blinded thee so that thou couldst not see the
beauty of the Saviour; it made thee deaf so that thou couldst not hear
the Redeemer's tender invitations. Sin turned thy feet into the way of
death, and poured poison into the very fountain of thy being; it
tainted thy heart, and made it "deceitful above all things, and
desperately wicked." Oh, what a creature thou wast when evil had done
its utmost with thee, before divine grace interposed! Thou wast an heir
of wrath even as others; thou didst "run with the multitude to do
evil." Such were all of us; but Paul reminds us, "but ye are washed,
but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord
Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." We have good reason, indeed, for
hating evil when we look back and trace its deadly workings. Such
mischief did evil do us, that our souls would have been lost had not
omnipotent love interfered to redeem us. Even now it is an active
enemy, ever watching to do us hurt, and to drag us to perdition.
Therefore "hate evil," O Christians, unless you desire trouble. If you
would strew your path with thorns, and plant nettles in your
death-pillow, then neglect to "hate evil:" but if you would live a
happy life, and die a peaceful death, then walk in all the ways of
holiness, hating evil, even unto the end. If you truly love your
Saviour, and would honour him, then "hate evil." We know of no cure for
the love of evil in a Christian like abundant intercourse with the Lord
Jesus. Dwell much with him, and it is impossible for you to be at peace
with sin.

"Order my footsteps by thy Word,
And make my heart sincere;
Let sin have no dominion, Lord,
But keep my conscience clear."

EVENING:

"Be zealous."
-- Revelation 3:19

If you would see souls converted, if you would hear the cry that "the
kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord;" if you
would place crowns upon the head of the Saviour, and his throne lifted
high, then be filled with zeal. For, under God, the way of the world's
conversion must be by the zeal of the church. Every grace shall do
exploits, but this shall be first; prudence, knowledge, patience, and
courage will follow in their places, but zeal must lead the van. It is
not the extent of your knowledge, though that is useful; it is not the
extent of your talent, though that is not to be despised; it is your
zeal that shall do great exploits. This zeal is the fruit of the Holy
Spirit: it draws its vital force from the continued operations of the
Holy Ghost in the soul. If our inner life dwindles, if our heart beats
slowly before God, we shall not know zeal; but if all be strong and
vigorous within, then we cannot but feel a loving anxiety to see the
kingdom of Christ come, and his will done on earth, even as it is in
heaven. A deep sense of gratitude will nourish Christian zeal. Looking
to the hole of the pit whence we were digged, we find abundant reason
why we should spend and be spent for God. And zeal is also stimulated
by the thought of the eternal future. It looks with tearful eyes down
to the flames of hell, and it cannot slumber: it looks up with anxious
gaze to the glories of heaven, and it cannot but bestir itself. It
feels that time is short compared with the work to be done, and
therefore it devotes all that it has to the cause of its Lord. And it
is ever strengthened by the remembrance of Christ's example. He was
clothed with zeal as with a cloak. How swift the chariot-wheels of duty
went with him! He knew no loitering by the way. Let us prove that we
are his disciples by manifesting the same spirit of zeal.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Don't Slack Off"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 7, 2008

DON'T SLACK OFF

Whatsoever ye shalt ask in My name, that will I do.

John 14:13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+14:13&sr=1

Am I fulfilling this ministry of the interior? There is no snare or
any danger of infatuation or pride in intercession, it is a hidden
ministry that brings forth fruit whereby the Father is glorified. Am
I allowing my spiritual life to be frittered away, or am I bringing
it all to one centre - the Atonement of my Lord? Is Jesus Christ more
and more dominating every interest in my life? If the one central
point, the great exerting influence in my life is the Atonement of
the Lord, then every phase of my life will bear fruit for Him.

I must take time to realize what is the central point of power. Do I
give one minute out of sixty to concentrate upon it? "If ye abide in
Me" - continue to act and think and work from that centre - "ye shall
ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." Am I abiding? Am I
taking time to abide? What is the greatest factor of power in my
life? Is it work, service, sacrifice for others, or trying to work
for God? The thing that ought to exert the greatest power in my life
is the Atonement of the Lord. It is not the thing we spend the most
time on that moulds us most; the greatest element is the thing that
exerts most power. We must determine to be limited and concentrate
our affinities.

"Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do." The disciple
who abides in Jesus is the will of God, and his apparently free
choices are God's fore-ordained decrees. Mysterious? Logically
contradictory and absurd? Yes, but a glorious truth to a saint.

Praying with Paul : "Generous for God's Glory"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GENEROUS FOR GOD'S GLORY

2 Corinthians 8:10-15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+8:10-15

Dear Father,

It is you, my God, who supplies seed for the sower and bread for
food. Multiply my resources and increase the harvest of
righteousness for me and my family. Then give us hearts that are
generous and willing to share with those in need around the world.
May I be a trustworthy channel of your resources, and may you
receive the glory and thanksgiving for all the goodness you
distribute through me. May I glorify you, my God, by my obedience
to the gospel and by my generosity based on its teaching: It is
more blessed to give than to receive.

Let your superlative and surpassing graciousness be seen in me!
Thank you, Lord, for your inexpressible gift to me and all men,
Christ Jesus, the cornucopia of blessings! Thank you, Abba, that my
life can be lived in imitation of your sinless son!

In his name I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Elijah Comes First -- Mark 9:11-12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

Saturday, June 7, 2008

Elijah Comes First

The followers asked Jesus, "Why do the teachers of the law
say that Elijah must come first?" Jesus answered, "They are
right to say that Elijah must come first. Elijah makes all
things the way they should be. But why does the Scripture say
that the Son of Man will suffer much and that people will
think he is worth nothing?"

-- Mark 9:11-12 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The great ending hope of the Old Testament as we now have it is that
God will send Elijah to prepare people's hearts for the Messiah. John
the Baptist was identified as this Elijah. He did make a people ready
for the Lord. But, Elijah was treated harshly, unfairly, and eventually
murdered by the political and religious establishment. Jesus wants his
disciples (and Mark wants us) to know that just as John has been
rejected and treated harshly, so Jesus will also be treated unfairly
and harshly. He wants them to realize what lies ahead for the Son of
Man!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, I am not sure how Jesus endured the unfairness he endured,
especially knowing that it was coming and knowing that he had the power
to squash anyone or anything that opposed him. Thank you, Lord Jesus,
for enduring all the indignities and unfairness that you faced. Thank
you for sacrificing yourself for me. To you, O Lord Jesus, and in your
name, we offer our thanks, praise, and prayer to the Father. Amen.

interest in other things and give God the crumbs, we need to know
that we are not going to reap a bounteous spiritual harvest.

PRAYER:
O LORD God Almighty, who sees all things and knows all hearts,
please give me wisdom to see the important things I need to invest
myself in, and help me see those things I must avoid because of
their entanglements. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
