Mustard Seed Thoughts: Poor and Needy

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Poor and Needy
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Hear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Psalm 86:1 NIV

Poor and needy doesn't sound like much fun, does it? We live in a world that recognizes and celebrates wealth. We glamorize the rich and famous. Whoever heard of the "Fortune Negative 500's"? Which sounds more familiar: "When I grow up I'm going to be rich!" or "I think I'd like to be poor all my life!"?

Yet the Psalmist offers poor and needy as a reason for God to respond. Would God really want to hang out with the less fortunate? Don't those who are "in" usually want to hang out with others who are equally "in"? Why would God want to lower Himself to reach to the lowly level of the poor and needy?

The Psalmist knows how to spur the heart of God! God is not on some ego trip! God is God! He is the owner and creator of all things! He is the Alpha and Omega! He is above all, before all, and greater than all!

God responds to the poor and needy, because in light of who He is a nd who we are....we are all poor and needy! There is none worthy to be compared...not even one!

When we come to God, recognizing that we are nothing without Him; when we give Him the credit and glory due His Holy name; then and only then will God respond to us! God is looking for our undivided devotion!

No matter what you have in your bank account; regardless of the certificates of accomplishment on your walls; you have nothing without God! Nothing!

Call to God today...poor and needy...tell Him you recognize He is everything!

Quotemeal: "What is more pleasing than ..."

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / QUOTEMEAL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

What is more pleasing than a psalm? A psalm is a blessing on the
lips of the people, praise of God, the assembly's homage, a
general acclamation, a word that speaks for all, the voice of
the Church, a confession of faith in song.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

In God We Still Trust, by Russ Lawson

Our nation and our world are struggling with trust in and having faith
in God. Everyone seems to be asking the question, "Why is this
happening?" Some even ask, "If there is really a God, and if there is,
why is there so much suffering?" Many people look at the incidents
recorded in the scriptures and find strength, but then Satan plants the
seed of doubt, and we can give in to their fear and want to give up on
life.

You most likely are not familiar with the name, Gladys Aylward, but you
may have heard her story which was made into a movie many years ago.
The movie was titled, "The Inn of the 6th Happiness." It was the story
of a single woman who became a missionary to China, but was forced to
flee before the invading Japanese army in World War II. She, however,
could not leave the people she loved to suffer, and especially the many
orphans. With only one assistant to help her, she led more than 100
children over the mountains to reach freedom.

In the book "The Hidden Price of Greatness," the authors tell us the
unknown story of the struggle which Gladys fought with herself:

During Gladys's harrowing journey out of war-torn Yangcheng, she
grappled with despair as never before. After passing a sleepless
night, she faced the morning with no hope of reaching safety. A 14
year old girl in the group reminded her of their much loved story
of Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. "But I am not
Moses," Gladys cried in desperation. "Of course you aren't," the
girl said, "but Jehovah is still God!"

WOW! What faith! Don't you wish you could always have the faith and
trust of that 14 year old girl?

We may not be Moses, but He is still Jehovah!

Often in the scriptures, the apostle Paul lets us see his very human
side. He had struggles with his own weaknesses, with his physical
problems, with discouragement from dealing with other less than perfect
people. Yet, he could write words of encouragement that let us
understand that he never gave up hope or trust in God, like these
familiar words of faith:

I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have
learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with
a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do
everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need
(Philippians 4:12-13 NLT).

Gladys was pursued by those who wanted to stop her. They rejected her
faith and would have had no regrets in killing her. Perhaps you are
struggling with despair and discouragement in your life right now. The
question that perhaps you need to ask yourself is the same one with
which she struggled: "Do you trust in God for deliverance?"

My prayer for you today are the amazing words of Paul prayed thousands
of years ago:

May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you
will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the
fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now glory be to
God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to
accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope (Ephesians
3:19-20).

I don't know about you, but for my wife and me, "In God we still
trust!" We may not be Moses, but He is still Jehovah!

Morning & Evening -- John 19:16 and Isaiah 53:6

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, April 3, 2009

MORNING:

"They took Jesus, and led him away."
-- John 19:16

He had been all night in agony, he had spent the early morning at the
hall of Caiaphas, he had been hurried from Caiaphas to Pilate, from
Pilate to Herod, and from Herod back again to Pilate; he had,
therefore, but little strength left, and yet neither refreshment nor
rest were permitted him. They were eager for his blood, and therefore
led him out to die, loaded with the cross. O dolorous procession! Well
may Salem's daughters weep. My soul, do thou weep also.

What learn we here as we see our blessed Lord led forth? Do we not
perceive that truth which was set forth in shadow by the scapegoat? Did
not the high-priest bring the scapegoat, and put both his hands upon
its head, confessing the sins of the people, that thus those sins might
be laid upon the goat, and cease from the people? Then the goat was led
away by a fit man into the wilderness, and it carried away the sins of
the people, so that if they were sought for they could not be found.
Now we see Jesus brought before the priests and rulers, who pronounce
him guilty; God himself imputes our sins to him, "the Lord hath laid on
him the iniquity of us all;" "He was made sin for us;" and, as the
substitute for our guilt, bearing our sin upon his shoulders,
represented by the cross; we see the great Scapegoat led away by the
appointed officers of justice. Beloved, can you feel assured that he
carried your sin? As you look at the cross upon his shoulders, does it
represent your sin? There is one way by which you can tell whether he
carried your sin or not. Have you laid your hand upon his head,
confessed your sin, and trusted in him? Then your sin lies not on you;
it has all been transferred by blessed imputation to Christ, and he
bears it on his shoulder as a load heavier than the cross.

Let not the picture vanish till you have rejoiced in your own
deliverance, and adored the loving Redeemer upon whom your iniquities
were laid.

EVENING:

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one
to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of
us all."
-- Isaiah 53:6

Here a confession of sin common to all the elect people of God. They
have all fallen, and therefore, in common chorus, they all say, from
the first who entered heaven to the last who shall enter there, "All we
like sheep have gone astray." The confession, while thus unanimous, is
also special and particular: "We have turned every one to his own way."
There is a peculiar sinfulness about every one of the individuals; all
are sinful, but each one with some special aggravation not found in his
fellow. It is the mark of genuine repentance that while it naturally
associates itself with other penitents, it also takes up a position of
loneliness. "We have turned every one to his own way," is a confession
that each man had sinned against light peculiar to himself, or sinned
with an aggravation which he could not perceive in others. This
confession is unreserved; there is not a word to detract from its
force, nor a syllable by way of excuse. The confession is a giving up
of all pleas of self-righteousness. It is the declaration of men who
are consciously guilty-guilty with aggravations, guilty without excuse:
they stand with their weapons of rebellion broken in pieces, and cry,
"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his
own way." Yet we hear no dolorous wailings attending this confession of
sin; for the next sentence makes it almost a song. "The Lord hath laid
on him the iniquity of us all." It is the most grievous sentence of the
three, but it overflows with comfort. Strange is it that where misery
was concentrated mercy reigned; where sorrow reached her climax weary
souls find rest. The Saviour bruised is the healing of bruised hearts.
See how the lowliest penitence gives place to assured confidence
through simply gazing at Christ on the cross!

My Utmost For His Highest : "If Thou Hadst Known!"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 3, 2009

IF THOU HADST KNOWN!

If thou hadst known ... in this thy day, the things
which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from
thine eyes.

Luke 19:42
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+19:42&sr=1

Jesus had entered into Jerusalem in triumph, the city was stirred to
its foundations; but a strange god was there, the pride of
Pharisaism; it was religious and upright, but a "whited sepulchre."

What is it that blinds me in this "my day"? Have I a strange god -
not a disgusting monster, but a disposition that rules me? More than
once God has brought me face to face with the strange god and I
thought I should have to yield, but I did not do it. I got through
the crisis by the skin of my teeth and I find myself in the
possession of the strange god still; I am blind to the things which
belong to my peace. It is an appalling thing that we can be in the
place where the Spirit of God should be getting at us unhinderedly,
and yet in crease our condemnation in God's sight.

"If thou hadst known" - God goes direct to the heart, with the tears
of Jesus behind. These words imply culpable responsibility; God holds
us responsible for what we do not see. "Now they are hid from thine
eyes" - because the disposition has never been yielded. The
unfathomable sadness of the "might have been!" God never opens doors
that have been closed. He opens other doors, but He reminds us that
there are doors which we have shut, doors which need never have been
shut, imaginations which need never have been sullied. Never be
afraid when God brings back the past. Let memory have its way. It is
a minister of God with its rebuke and chastisement and sorrow. God
will turn the "might have been" into a wonderful culture for the
future.

Praying with Paul : "Conciliation"

CONCILIATION

1 Corinthians 6:1-11
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+6:1-11

Dear Father, eternal and just judge of all,

Help me never to shame you or your saints before the world. How
could I dare seek arbitration with a brother before a judge who
does not even know about Christ's way? If believers are someday to
judge the world, and even angels, surely we can settle matters
between ourselves. Help me, Father, to willingly suffer wrong
rather than to quarrel with members of your family before the world
and thereby invite their ridicule.

Don't permit us to be deceived, but to know that the immoral,
idolaters, adulterers, homosexuals, thieves, greedy, drunkards,
revilers, and robbers will not inherit your kingdom. Yes, Father,
we were these kinds of people before we came to know your
salvation. But you washed us, sanctified us, justified us in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ and in your very own Spirit. Thank
you, loving Father, for reaching out to us, changing us, saving us!

In the name of Jesus, by whose blood we are washed clean and by
whose Spirit we are made to live, I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- For Those on Earth! -- Matthew 8:5-9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, April 3, 2009

For Those on Earth!

Jesus went to the city of Capernaum. When Jesus entered the
city, an army officer came to him and begged for help. The
officer said, "Lord, my servant is very sick at home in bed.
He can't move his body and has much pain." Jesus said to the
officer, "I will go and heal him." The officer answered,
"Lord, I am not good enough for you to come into my house.
All you need to do is command that my servant be healed, and
he will be healed. I myself am a man under the authority
(power) of other men. And I have soldiers under my authority.
I tell one soldier, 'Go,' and he goes. I tell another
soldier, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do
this,' and my servant obeys me. {I know that you also have
power like this.}"

-- Matthew 8:5-9 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Authority comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be earned, it can be
given by title or position, it can be coveted, it can be seized, but
only One truly has, will have, and has had ultimate authority.
Like so often today, it takes someone who has handled authority with
character to truly recognize someone else with authority. The Centurion
recognizes authority when he sees it. He is under the authority of
superiors. He commands authority over those under his rule. In Jesus,
he recognizes authority in a way that none other he has met possesses.
He comes to Jesus, to have what no other can do, be done for a beloved
servant.
This powerful man reminds us that it is not just the weak who see Jesus
as Savior, but the strong and powerful as well. It is not just the Jew
who searches for the Messiah, but the God-fearing Gentile, too!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty, incomparable, and authoritative God, I trust in your truth,
your will, and your power for everything. Open my heart to your

Today's Verse : Philippians 4:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 3, 2009

VERSE:
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen
in me -- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with
you.

-- Philippians 4:9
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+4:9

THOUGHT:
As we seek to pass on the faith to our children, our friends,
our younger spiritual "children" in the faith, we must remember
Paul's example. He taught the truth; passed on the truth that had
been revealed and passed on to him; he displayed that truth in his
life; Paul then called on the people he was mentoring to put this
truth into practice in their daily lives. This would enable them to
fully experience the presence of God in their lives and find the
peace that God so longs to give them.

PRAYER:
Father, help me be a better teacher in word and deed as I seek
to influence those around me, those who need my help in their
Christian walk, and those in my family seeking to grow in your
grace. In Jesus' name. Amen.
