Today's Verse : Psalm 1:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 25, 2009

VERSE:
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the
wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of
mockers.
-- Psalm 1:1
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+1:1

THOUGHT:
So often sin and ungodly lifestyles are portrayed as glamorous.
The way of blessing, however, is the way of God. His will is for
our good, his commands spring from his mercy and protection, and
his way is the path of life. We are blessed when we walk with God
and do his will.

PRAYER:
Forgive me, Father, for believing the lies of the world and
being deceived and enticed by the temptations of Satan. I know that
sin brings heartaches, complications, and problems. I also know
that choosing the right things, standing up for truth, and living
faithfully for you are sometimes very difficult. Please help my
heart believe and my mind see that walking in your will brings me
life. In Jesus' name I ask this. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Don't Let the Grass Grow Here!, by Danny Sims

Native Americans have an old saying: "Don't let grass grow on the path
of friendship."

We ought to spend so much time with people we love that there is plenty
of evidence of the relationship. The Native Americans are talking about
the many ways to knowing good friends. I like that.

When I was a boy I often walked a path to a couple of sacred spots. My
family lived on a farm in southwestern Kentucky and my older brothers
built a tree house hidden away in a wooded tract of land. A little
deeper in those same woods was a secret pond where the Sims brothers --
and occasionally their sister -- could fish or look for frogs. Don't
underestimate the mystique of a tree house and fishing place known only
by a few kids!

We knew the way to the tree house and pond because we went there so
often. And over time we made a trail. Eventually anyone could follow
the well worn way. We would have never stayed away from the tree house
and pond long enough for grass to grow on the path.

This can be true of friendship and it can also be true of prayer.
Prayer is a trailhead to friendship with God, a pathway to the
controlling influence of God's character, the junction where we merge
with His mercy. Prayer leads us to God. So we need to be familiar with
a time and place for prayer. Prayer is a way to knowing God.

We need to say this: Don't let grass grow on the path of prayer.

If you are not practicing prayer there is always time to begin. Start
today. Trust me in this: no one feels 100% satisfied with their prayer
life. We all wish we prayed more often and we long to make deeper
petitions when we pray. When it comes to the journey of prayer no one
has arrived. So begin where you are right now and see where you are in
a week, a month, or even a year.

"Friend, there's grass on your path!"

Recently Tricia, a wife and mom of three kids, began to pray daily for
the first time in her life. She has joined over 300 other people in our
church family in 40 days of walking in prayer together and listening
for God's voice. Tricia recently e-mailed me to say:

I am embarrassed and proud to admit that for the first time in my
Christian life my prayer life has true meaning. I set aside
personal time to work through the days lessons/thoughts and special
time for prayer. I find myself praying more than once a day which
is something new to me and I have finally found my way to my knees
in prayer, something I never fully grasped before now.

I love how she is embarrassed and proud all at the same time. I can
relate! Tricia is making a new path to the heart of God.

Some of the early converts to Christianity in Africa were so attentive
to their prayer time that they found their own special place to pray in
solitude. These sacred spots were away from their village. As they
walked to their prayer place they would create their own private
footpaths through the brush. When grass began to grow over one of these
trails, it was evident that the person to whom it belonged was not
praying very often. When a brother or sister noticed an overgrown
"prayer path," they would lovingly go to the person and say, "Friend,
there's grass on your path!"

Friend, if there is grass on your path or you'd like help in making a
new path, let me know! Email me: DannySims@altamesa.org. I would love
to help you make a new path for your life.

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 91:3 and Luke 10:40

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, January 24, 2009

MORNING:

"Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler."
-- Psalms 91:3

God delivers his people from the snare of the fowler in two senses.
From, and out of. First, he delivers them from the snare-does not let
them enter it; and secondly, if they should be caught therein, he
delivers them out of it. The first promise is the most precious to
some; the second is the best to others.

"He shall deliver thee from the snare." How? Trouble is often the means
whereby God delivers us. God knows that our backsliding will soon end
in our destruction, and he in mercy sends the rod. We say, "Lord, why
is this?" not knowing that our trouble has been the means of delivering
us from far greater evil. Many have been thus saved from ruin by their
sorrows and their crosses; these have frightened the birds from the
net. At other times, God keeps his people from the snare of the fowler
by giving them great spiritual strength, so that when they are tempted
to do evil they say, "How can I do this great wickedness, and sin
against God?" But what a blessed thing it is that if the believer
shall, in an evil hour, come into the net, yet God will bring him out
of it! O backslider, be cast down, but do not despair. Wanderer though
thou hast been, hear what thy Redeemer saith-"Return, O backsliding
children; I will have mercy upon you." But you say you cannot return,
for you are a captive. Then listen to the promise-"Surely he shall
deliver thee out of the snare of the fowler." Thou shalt yet be brought
out of all evil into which thou hast fallen, and though thou shalt
never cease to repent of thy ways, yet he that hath loved thee will not
cast thee away; he will receive thee, and give thee joy and gladness,
that the bones which he has broken may rejoice. No bird of paradise
shall die in the fowler's net.

EVENING:

"Martha was cumbered about much serving."
-- Luke 10:40

Her fault was not that she served: the condition of a servant well
becomes every Christian. "I serve," should be the motto of all the
princes of the royal family of heaven. Nor was it her fault that she
had "much serving." We cannot do too much. Let us do all that we
possibly can; let head, and heart, and hands, be engaged in the
Master's service. It was no fault of hers that she was busy preparing a
feast for the Master. Happy Martha, to have an opportunity of
entertaining so blessed a guest; and happy, too, to have the spirit to
throw her whole soul so heartily into the engagement. Her fault was
that she grew "cumbered with much serving," so that she forgot him, and
only remembered the service. She allowed service to override communion,
and so presented one duty stained with the blood of another. We ought
to be Martha and Mary in one: we should do much service, and have much
communion at the same time. For this we need great grace. It is easier
to serve than to commune. Joshua never grew weary in fighting with the
Amalekites; but Moses, on the top of the mountain in prayer, needed two
helpers to sustain his hands. The more spiritual the exercise, the
sooner we tire in it. The choicest fruits are the hardest to rear: the
most heavenly graces are the most difficult to cultivate. Beloved,
while we do not neglect external things, which are good enough in
themselves, we ought also to see to it that we enjoy living, personal
fellowship with Jesus. See to it that sitting at the Saviour's feet is
not neglected, even though it be under the specious pretext of doing
him service. The first thing for our soul's health, the first thing for
his glory, and the first thing for our own usefulness, is to keep
ourselves in perpetual communion with the Lord Jesus, and to see that
the vital spirituality of our religion is maintained over and above
everything else in the world.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Overmastering Direction"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 24, 2009

THE OVERMASTERING DIRECTION

I have appeared unto thee for this purpose.

Acts 26:16
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ac+26:16&sr=1

The vision Paul had on the road to Damascus was no passing emotion,
but a vision that had very clear and emphatic directions for him, and
he says, "I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision." Our Lord
said, in effect, to Paul - Your whole life is to be overmastered by
Me; you are to have no end, no aim, and no purpose but Mine. "I have
chosen him."

When we are born again we all have visions, if we are spiritual at
all, of what Jesus wants us to he, and the great thing is to learn
not to be disobedient to the vision, not to say that it cannot be
attained. It is not sufficient to know that God has redeemed the
world, and to know that the Holy Spirit can make all that Jesus did
effectual in me; I must have the basis of a personal relationship to
Him. Paul was not given a message or a doctrine to proclaim, he was
brought into a vivid, personal, overmastering relationship to Jesus
Christ. Verse 16 is immensely commanding - "to make thee a minister
and a witness." There is nothing there apart from the personal
relationship. Paul was devoted to a Person not to a cause. He was
absolutely Jesus Christ's, he saw nothing else, he lived for nothing
else. "For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus
Christ, and Him crucified."

Praying with Paul : "Alive in Christ"

ALIVE IN CHRIST

Romans 6:1-5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+6:1-5

Dear Father, God of grace,

Shall I continue in sin that grace may abound? Never, never,
never! May I never presume that being under grace is a license to
sin.

How can I live in sin when, through baptism into Christ, I have
died to sin? If I have been baptized into his death, should I not
walk in newness of life, even as Christ did when he was raised from
the dead by your glory? If I have died with Christ, I will also
live with him.

Thank you for the confidence and hope your promise gives me. In
Jesus' name. Amen.

WJD! -- The Father's Delight in His Children -- Matthew 3:16-17

The Father's Delight in His Children

Jesus was baptized and he came up out of the water. The sky
opened, and he saw God's Spirit coming down on him like a
dove. And a voice spoke from heaven. The voice said, "This
(Jesus) is my Son and I love him. I am very pleased with
him."

-- Matthew 3:16-17 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
While Matthew's focus in Jesus' baptism is the fulfillment of God's
will and character -- "to fulfill all righteousness" -- God lets us
know how delighted he is with his Son who is wanting to faithfully
honor and obediently serve the will of his Father. God tells Jesus
three things that all of us need to hear from our loved ones. They are
also words we need to tell to those we love. God affirms his
relationship with Jesus: "This is my Son!" God affirms his love for
Jesus: "Whom I love." God affirms his joy in Jesus: "I am very pleased
with him." If Jesus needed this affirmation at the beginning of his
ministry and right before he faced temptation, don't those around us
need it as well?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Worthy, holy, and faithful God, I want to live with passion obeying
your Word, reflecting your character, and persuading those who are
reluctant to follow. Inspire such passion in me through your Spirit and
energize my life as I seek to live your will. I want you to be pleased
and praised by what I live. In Jesus' holy name I pray. Amen.
