=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Cap and Gown, by Tom Norvell

It seems like only a few months ago that I held her in my arms for the
first time. She wore the little cap that babies in the hospital nursery
wear. Not long after that she was wearing gowns to sleep in and to
twirl around in like a ballerina. Now, she's wearing a cap and gown of
a different color and style as she walks across the stage to receive
her high school diploma. Has this really happened? How can it be that
this little one who once curled up in my lap as I rocked her to sleep,
is now marching in with her classmates to the tune of the familiar
graduation ceremony music?

Between the time when she wore a cap and gown as a little girl and now
as a beautiful young woman we have shared many times of joy and times
of sadness. We have laughed together, we have cried together. We have
shared secrets. We have taken walks and ridden our bikes through
neighborhoods and along the beach. She has learned to ride horses, play
sports, drive a car, cheered for the home team, had her first date and
many other dates since then. She has grown from a little girl who said
she would never move away from home to a young lady who is eager to be
in a dorm room and expand her level of independence.

Like Moms and Dads all over the country as we watch her today, her
mother and I fight back the tears as we realize our hold on her is
becoming less and less each day. It started with sleepovers, then she
began taking trips with her friends without us, then there were shared
meals with the family and friends, trips to the local breakfast place
before school, banquets, chorus concerts, and ball games. Soon it will
be foreign mission trips, college orientation, packing her things and
decorating her dorm room.

There's a part of me that wants to cry out, "Stop! This cannot be
happening! It's too soon. She's not ready. I'm not ready!" There's
another part of me that loves to look at the beautiful young lady,
thank God for whom she has become, and long to see what God has in
store for her over the next phase of her life. There's still another
part of me that just wants to take her in my arms again and comfort her
when she's afraid, dry her tears when she cries, and reassure her that
she will always be loved. There's yet another part of me that wishes I
could freeze this moment in time and forever enjoy it, or, better yet,
rewind the last eighteen years.

I accept the reality that today!

But, as John Ortberg reminds us, "Life does not have a rewind button."
(From, "When It's Over It All Goes Back In the Box".) I cannot turn
back the clock. She must grow. She must go. She must learn. She must
earn her own way. She must experience life for herself and learn some
of the hard lessons of life all on her own. There will be times she
will cry and I will not be there to dry her tears. There will be days
when she seeks the advice of another. There will be times when I will
wonder if she has forgotten what we had? Will she remember how special
our relationship is? There will be times when I'll miss her so much
that my heart and my soul will ache. Maybe there will be times when
she'll miss me too.

I accept the reality that today she wears a cap and gown, walks across
the stage on graduation day, and is on her way to being a woman. Yet,
in my mind and in my heart she will always be the sweetest little girl
in the whole wide world and I pray that she remembers these words I
sang to her:

She's the sweetest girl in the whole wide world.
There's not a doubt in my mind.
When I look at her and see her smile,
I'm so proud she's mine.

She's the sweetest girl in the whole wide world.
There's not a doubt in my mind.
When she looks at me and she makes me smile,
I thank the Lord she's mine.

Morning & Evening -- Genesis 1:5 and Isaiah 51:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, June 1, 2008

MORNING:

"The evening and the morning were the first day."
-- Genesis 1:5

Was it so even in the beginning? Did light and darkness divide the
realm of time in the first day? Then little wonder is it if I have also
changes in my circumstances from the sunshine of prosperity to the
midnight of adversity. It will not always be the blaze of noon even in
my soul concerns, I must expect at seasons to mourn the absence of my
former joys, and seek my Beloved in the night. Nor am I alone in this,
for all the Lord's beloved ones have had to sing the mingled song of
judgment and of mercy, of trial and deliverance, of mourning and of
delight. It is one of the arrangements of Divine providence that day
and night shall not cease either in the spiritual or natural creation
till we reach the land of which it is written, "there is no night
there." What our heavenly Father ordains is wise and good.

What, then, my soul, is it best for thee to do? Learn first to be
content with this divine order, and be willing, with Job, to receive
evil from the hand of the Lord as well as good. Study next, to make the
outgoings of the morning and the evening to rejoice. Praise the Lord
for the sun of joy when it rises, and for the gloom of evening as it
falls. There is beauty both in sunrise and sunset, sing of it, and
glorify the Lord. Like the nightingale, pour forth thy notes at all
hours. Believe that the night is as useful as the day. The dews of
grace fall heavily in the night of sorrow. The stars of promise shine
forth gloriously amid the darkness of grief. Continue thy service under
all changes. If in the day thy watchword be labour, at night exchange
it for watch. Every hour has its duty, do thou continue in thy calling
as the Lord's servant until he shall suddenly appear in his glory. My
soul, thine evening of old age and death is drawing near, dread it not,
for it is part of the day; and the Lord has said, "I will cover him all
the day long."

EVENING:

"He will make her wilderness like Eden."
-- Isaiah 51:3

Methinks, I see in vision a howling wilderness, a great and terrible
desert, like to the Sahara. I perceive nothing in it to relieve the
eye, all around I am wearied with a vision of hot and arid sand, strewn
with ten thousand bleaching skeletons of wretched men who have expired
in anguish, having lost their way in the pitiless waste. What an
appalling sight! How horrible! a sea of sand without a bound, and
without an oasis, a cheerless graveyard for a race forlorn! But behold
and wonder! Upon a sudden, upspringing from the scorching sand I see a
plant of renown; and as it grows it buds, the bud expands-it is a rose,
and at its side a lily bows its modest head; and, miracle of miracles!
as the fragrance of those flowers is diffused the wilderness is
transformed into a fruitful field, and all around it blossoms
exceedingly, the glory of Lebanon is given unto it, the excellency of
Carmel and Sharon. Call it not Sahara, call it Paradise. Speak not of
it any longer as the valley of deathshade, for where the skeletons lay
bleaching in the sun, behold a resurrection is proclaimed, and up
spring the dead, a mighty army, full of life immortal. Jesus is that
plant of renown, and his presence makes all things new. Nor is the
wonder less in each individual's salvation. Yonder I behold you, dear
reader, cast out, an infant, unswathed, unwashed, defiled with your own
blood, left to be food for beasts of prey. But lo, a jewel has been
thrown into your bosom by a divine hand, and for its sake you have been
pitied and tended by divine providence, you are washed and cleansed
from your defilement, you are adopted into heaven's family, the fair
seal of love is upon your forehead, and the ring of faithfulness is on
your hand-you are now a prince unto God, though once an orphan, cast
away. O prize exceedingly the matchless power and grace which changes
deserts into gardens, and makes the barren heart to sing for joy.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Staggering Question"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 1, 2008

THE STAGGERING QUESTION

Son of man, can these bones live?

Ezekiel 37:3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=eze+37:3&sr=1

Can that sinner be turned into a saint? Can that twisted life be put
right? There is only one answer: "0 Lord, Thou knowest, I don't."
Never trample in with religious common sense and say - "Oh, yes, with
a little more Bible reading and devotion and prayer, I see how it can
be done."

It is much easier to do something than to trust in God; we mistake
panic for inspiration. That is why there are so few fellow workers
with God and so many workers for Him. We would far rather work for
God than believe in Him. Am I quite sure that God will do what I
cannot do? I despair of men in the degree in which I have never
realized that God has done anything for me. Is my experience such a
wonderful realization of God's power and might that I can never
despair of anyone I see? Have I had any spiritual work done in me at
all? The degree of panic is the degree of the lack of personal
spiritual experience.

"Behold, 0 my people, I will open your graves." When God wants to
show you what human nature is like apart from Himself, He has to show
it you in yourself. If the Spirit of God has given you a vision of
what you are apart from the grace of God (and He only does it when
His Spirit is at work), you know there is no criminal who is half so
bad in actuality as you know yourself to be in possibility. My
"grave" has been opened by God and "I know that in me (that is, in my
flesh) dwelleth no good thing." God's Spirit continually reveals what
human nature is like apart from His grace.

Praying with Paul : "Following His Example"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

FOLLOWING HIS EXAMPLE

2 Corinthians 6:1-11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+6:1-11

Dear Father, blessed bestower of grace,

As your servant I commend myself to you as your will may require:
Through great endurance, if need be - afflictions, hardships,
calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, staying
awake, hunger! Through goodness - purity, knowledge, forbearance,
kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, and truthful speech.
Through the power of God - with weapons of righteousness for the
right hand and the left. In disparity - in honor and dishonor, in
ill-repute and good-repute, treated as an imposter and yet true, as
unknown and yet well-known, as dying, yet behold I live, as
punished but not yet killed, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as
poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing
everything!

In the name of Jesus, who suffered for us, I ask for the grace and
will-power to live according to his example. Amen.

Kingdom Preview

Then Jesus said, "I tell you the truth. Some of you people
standing here will see the kingdom of God come before you
die. The kingdom of God will come with power."

-- Mark 9:1 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Kingdom and power belong to our God and to his Son. Those who belong to
Jesus will experience this power and belong to this Kingdom! The
question is not if God can make this possible; he already has in Jesus.
The question is whether or not we have decided to honor God's Kingdom
and live for his Son so his "great power" can be at work in us.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I want to see the power of Jesus unfold and to experience the
full victory of your Kingdom when he comes. Align my heart with you so
that it is fit for your Kingdom. Remove any duplicity, dishonesty, and
doubt so that I can serve you with an undivided heart. In Jesus' name.
Amen.

VERSE:
"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men,
to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your
Father in heaven."
-- Matthew 6:1

THOUGHT:
Compassion is not for personal glory, just as it is not a
private internal emotion. Christian compassion must always motivate
us to act in the best interest and for the greater good of those in
need, without calling attention to ourselves or our sacrifices. God
provides what we need to bless others and takes care of the reward
when our goal is to please him and to be used by him to bless
others who are in need.

PRAYER:
Loving God and tender Shepherd, use me each day to be a blessing
to someone in need. Please open my eyes and ears to see those
around me who need emotional support or financial help. Please give
me the courage to bless them and lead them closer to you. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.
