To the Jews who had believed Him, Jesus said, "If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free." They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can You say that we shall be set free?" Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:31-36 NIV
The Jews had never really been free. I remember watching a paid programming thirty minute broadcast with the sole purpose to raise money to send Jews home to Israel. Already, hundreds of thousands have gone to Israel, and there are hundreds of thousands more wanting to go. This really is modern day fulfillment of prophecy. The point, however, is that Jews have always been pursued, hated by someone.
Jesus came to set the captives free. Yes, Jesus came for the Gentiles or non-Jews, but He, Himself was a Jew. Jesus came to redeem His earthly heritage people too. When I read the verses we have today my heart grows heavy. How could the Jews, of all people, fail to believe in their own Messiah? Mustard Seeds is privileged to have several Jewish Christians who read us each day. I believe as Christians we are to love the Jews, just as we love all people. Jesus came first for the Jew, then the Gentile, the Bible tells us. The Jewish people are precious to God and should be to us.
Yet, sadly, many Jews today are still wandering in a state of lost-ness. They have rejected the Truth that would set them free. Jesus came to give them life and to give it more abundantly, but so many will not accept that Truth. Pray for the Jewish nation. Pray for their safety, their deliverance, and for their salvation. Pray that they would see the Truth that will truly set them free.
God gives the promise of freedom to all who call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. If you are living today in bondage to sin, or bondage to your own self-sufficiency; if you are looking for a way towards freedom; look to the Cross of Jesus Christ. If the Son has set you free, you shall be free indeed.
2 Corinthians 3:17 says, "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Lord, today, help us to live within the freedom that is promised through the Holy Spirit."
