Mustard Seed Thought: Pray 4

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Matthew 6:8 NIV

If He already knows what I need, then why do I have to pray? Have you ever heard that question?

It's a good question. God is Sovereign, and He does have a master plan of which He is currently seeing to completion. If you are a Christian, then God's ultimate will for you is that you be like His Son Jesus. God is directing activity in your life towards that end achievement. If that's true, then why should I pray? Aren't we going to end up in the same place anyway?

To me, this aspect of prayer is one of the greatest. God, who is infinitely wiser than you and I will ever be, wants to dialogue with us. Does He need to dialogue with us? No, but He wants to! Does that make you feel special? It should.

What difference does prayer make? Well, within those things which are sovereignly decreed by God, you and I cannot change things. For example, God is going to bring His Son Jesus back to judge the world, and no amount of prayer is going to change His mind on that. There is, however, many ways God can accomplish His ultimate will. So, prayer may play a role in altering our lives within God's sovereign will. God may indeed grant us the desires of our heart while still maintaining His sovereign will of conforming us to the image of Christ.

The Bible says that God will meet "all your needs according to His richness in Christ Jesus". God already knows your needs and His plan is working to meet those needs. Prayer is the relationship we have with God by which He begins to share His heart with us and transform our will to His will. As we grow in the activity of prayer, over time we will begin to see more prayers answered because God's will and our will begin to look the same.

Oh, Lord, teach us to pray.
