When He had placed His hands on them, He went on from there. Matthew 19:15 NIV
The little children had come for one reason; they wanted Jesus to touch them. The disciples rebuked those who brought them. Afterall, this was Jesus, they must have thought. Jesus was too important to be wasting time with children. Or was He?
I don't think Jesus scolded the disciples when He said "let the little children come to me". I think He patiently used this as a teaching moment. He told the disciples that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these. So, exactly what does that mean, anyway?
Little children have a unique way of being bluntly honest, don't they? Like the time we were invited to a friend's house for dinner. One of our boys walked in and immediately said, "Yuk, what's that strange smell?" Or, when the other one, that same night, said about the main course, "Ooh, what's that? Momma, do I have to eat this?" As much as I wanted to be under the table, and I recognized I did have some manner training to impart, I knew they were saying aloud what I had thought privately.
I think it's that honesty of heart that Christ was seeing in these children. They didn't come to Jesus for money. They weren't looking for an autograph from a football hero. He wasn't the latest wrestling fad. He was Jesus. They recognized that there was something about Him that they wanted. They just wanted Him to "touch" them.
Oh, dear friend, they knew something you and I should remember: We haven't really been touched until we've been touched by Jesus! The Kingdom of Heaven is based on such faith.
Oh, Jesus, in this New Year touch us like you've never touched us before. That's all we ask. Touch us and that will be enough.
