And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3 NIV
Did you know you may need to change? I'm not trying to upset you, but Jesus said the disciples needed to change. They had spent years with Him by the time He told them this. They were in the presence of the King of kings 24/7 and yet they needed to change if they wanted to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. They had to change to become like a little child. I don't think I have many children who read this devotional, so unless you are a child, you may need to change and become like one.
I wonder what Jesus meant? In other places of the Bible maturity is encouraged. Certainly we need to grow up and face life someday. We can't remain "childlike" in handling the things of this world. Yet Jesus tells us to become childlike.
I wonder if Jesus is trying to tell us about our attitude. Perhaps this verse means more than just speaking of eternity. After all, Jesus often talked about the Kingdom of God in the present tense. We don't have to wait for the Kingdom of heaven when we die; the Kingdom of heaven is here! Perhaps to fully grasp and understand the Kingdom of God; to really get in on all the Kingdom of heaven has for us, we must become like a little child.
Children are filled with wonder, excitement, astonishment, and awe of life. Recently I was at a big national toy store. One of the families from our church was coming out as I was walking in the store. I heard the 4 year old son loudly ask his mother, "Can we come back here every day?" Who hasn't watched a little child get more enjoyment out of a box than the toy inside the box?
I wonder if Jesus wasn't thinking those kinds of thoughts when He said, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."
Lord, help me have the wonder of a child when it comes to things of YOU!
