Mustard Seed Thought: Nativity 5

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews. We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." Matthew 2:1-2 NIV

If you recall, we are looking at the nativity scene we have popularized in today's Christmas celebration. First we looked at who wasn't present that first Christmas; now we are looking at those who were there for the birth of our Saviour.

Now, Biblical scholars, before you correct me, yes I know the Magi, or wise men as they are often called, were not actually at the manger scene. They arrived some time after Jesus was in a home; some believe as late as two years after His birth, but at least after He had left the manger. Also, there is no mention of how many Magi there were. There could have been hundreds, but they did bring three gifts, which leads us to place three of these figures in most of our nativity scenes.

The point is this, the Magi didn't miss Christmas! They may have celebrated the birth of Christ a little late, but they showed up to worship Immanuel!

These wise men were most likely astrologers; scientist of their day. They were intelligent, scholarly gentlemen. Quite possibly they had studied the works of Daniel; the great prophet of the Old Testament. They no doubt knew the Saviour would come and knew to watch for the star in Bethlehem. They were prepared to seek the Lord! Best of all, once they found Him, they were ready to worship Him!

It is often said, "Wise Men Still Seek Him". Wise men certainly did that first Christmas, which is why it is so appropriate for them to appear at our nativity scenes. These learned men looked to the future and saw something worth searching for!

They saw the Living Christ! This Christmas the Living Christ is still worth searching for...with everything you've got!
