Christ Service 2
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." John 13:7 NIV
Jesus told the disciples that later they would understand His actions. He bent down, cleaned the dirt off their feet, and dried them with His towel. With only three short years of ministry, and a cross awaiting Him, Immanuel took time clean the smellies. Do you understand this? Jesus promised the disciples that later they would understand, so I know they did one day, but to be honest, I am still trying.
Has anyone ever done anything for you that you couldn't understand? There was a young man several years ago who had experienced some rough days. He was without a home, a job, a car, or anything to eat. He accepted Christ and began to experience the blessing of a church family. He was given a job. He found a small apartment, and people in the church supplied him with food, clothes and furniture. I remember watching him walk around in amazement at God's goodness . He couldn't quite understand why people would love him in such a way.
The disciples knew Jesus cared. Jesus made it clearly evident to all who were around Him. This was something different, however. This was an act that the lowest servant would have performed. This was menial labor. The disciples had worshipped Christ. They didn't expect to have their feet cleaned by Him. This was a deeper level of commitment than the disciples had expected from their Savior. And, even greater, what they didn't understand is what Christ would soon do for them on the cross. The One who had help name the stars, was about to endure the punishment and pain of crucifixion, for sins He didn't commit, sins, in fact, even of these disciples.
Do you and I understand what Christ has done for us? Do we take for granted the full extent of His love?
Can I give you a homework assignment? Take five minutes, get alone with God, and reflect on the awesomeness of Christ's humility at the cross. The God King, Jesus, Name above all names, gave up His royal position, to be sacrificed for the salvation of mankind. He was mocked, spit upon, beaten and bruised, and hung naked on a tree, so that we might receive eternal life!
Do you and I fully understand this? One day we will!
