Heaven Four
for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night....So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled....Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:2, 6,16-23 NIV
Paul has just concluded a look at the fact that Jesus will come again to bring His children Home. He then leaves us with some instruction for living until that glorious day appears. What do we do until we get to Heaven? To answer that question, let's review todays verses.
We are to be alert and self-controlled. We are to be joyful always . We are to pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances. Paul says this is Gods will for you in Christ Jesus. Hes saying that you can live this way when you are allowing Christ to live His live through you. Does that describe your life?
Paul continues, encouraging us to allow Gods spirit to work in us, study the prophecies, and to test everything, or in other words, see how it compares to the truth of Gods Word. In a world of relativity today, when everything is assumed true based on a persons individual belief system, we need Gods standard to judge what is true.
We are to hold on to the good and avoid the evil. I think Paul knew this was a broad statement, but after the previous instruction, when comparing everything to Gods Word, there is a clear distinction between good and evil. Finally, Paul encourages us to continue in the process of sanctification; which is the process of a Christian being molded into the image of Christ.
W ell, how are you doing waiting for Heaven? Are you more like Jesus today than you were one year ago? Will you be further along in the journey by this time next year? I have received numerous replies that basically said they were anxious for Heaven, but not ready yet because there was still much work to be done. Isn't that why we have to be all the more "about our Father's business"?
Paul gives one more concluding remark. Perhaps this will be of comfort to you. In 1 Thessalonians 5:24, The One who calls you is faithful and He will do it. If you are a Christian, and you truly desire to be like Jesus, God will finish the work! Rest in Him!
