Running Scared
And the word of the Lord came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 1 Kings 19:9 NIV
Elijah had witnessed God do some amazing things. God had allowed him to stop the rain at his word. The famine came, but Elijah was kept fed. In fact, birds from the air were his waiters; morning and night.
Elijah went to the widow and her child to show God's wonderful provision. The woman said she had enough food for one meal, and then she would die. Elijah told her to trust God, and she would live; her food would not run out. It didn't. The woman's son died, and Elijah, by God's power, restored him to life.
God sent Elijah to the wicked King Ahab. There, on Mount Carmel, Elijah displays for all the prophets and people of Israel, that God is Lord Almighty. You know the story, the demonstration with the two bulls. The prophets of Baal, couldn't wake up their god. Elijah told them to "shout a little louder". Their god never came!
Oh, but ours did! Our Go d sent fire to consume the bull, the alter, and all the water Elijah had ordered to be poured on top. God's strength was never more evident!
Elijah commands the rain to come, and the famine is over! Elijah is at the top of his ministry.
Then Ahab's wicked wife Jezebel sends a death threat to Elijah. Elijah, scared senseless, runs away for weeks and here we catch up to him, hiding out in a cave. And, God asks him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
Doesn't that strike you as funny? Can't you hear God saying to Elijah, "What's the deal Elijah? I thought everything was okay? Why are you running away? We just won!"
Oh, but I can sympathize with Elijah! I've been there! Sure, I've had victories, but they pale now that I'm in the middle of this crisis! I can hear Elijah saying, "What do you mean God, 'what am I doing here'? I'm hiding out! Hello, God, where have you been? Jezebel wants to kill me! I'm a dead duck! It couldn't get any worse than t his! I had to run to save my life!"
And God says, "But the way I see it, we are in good shape! This is just the beginning! We were just getting started! The best is yet to come!"
If Elijah only knew!
Are you running scared today? Maybe God would say to you:
"What are you doing here?...the best is yet to come!"
