Garden Story 1
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
When He had finished praying, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and He and His disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?" John 18:1-4 NIV

To catch you up with where this story appears in Scripture, Jesus and the disciples had recently left the Lords Supper, gone for a long walk, and went into the Garden of Gethsemane. Along the way to the garden, Jesus had been teaching the disciples, preparing them for His departure.

During this time intense time, Jesus powerfully delivered some of His strongest words. He claimed to be the way, the truth and the l ife and said that no one comes to the Father except through Me. Never had anyone been so bold. Jesus told the disciples they must learn to abide in Him, because apart from Him they would be able to do nothing. Jesus promised to send the Comforter and taught how the Holy Spirit would impact the lives of believers. He promised them that the world would hate them, as it had hated Him, and that they would experience trials, but they didnt have to be afraid, because Jesus had already overcome the world. Just before entering the garden, Jesus prayed for Himself, His disciples, and all believers.

That was a lot to accomplish in a day. Jesus was probably tired, yet, we know that Jesus didnt go to the garden to rest. Instead He went to the garden for more prayer.

What do you do when you are at your weakest? If youre like me you just want to crash, but if we want to be like Jesus, we will learn that the toughest times of life are when we must practice prayer the mo st. Jesus needed physical strength for the journey ahead and He found it through prayer.

Lord, in our darkest days, remind us to find our strength in You!
