John-Like, 5
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. Matthew 11:7-9 NIV

John the Baptist sent word to Jesus that he was in prison and need of help. Jesus responds that the work of Christ, which John was influential in establishing, was being done in a splendid way. It probably wasnt the answer John was looking for, but it was Gods answer, and so it was clearly best.

I find it interesting that after Johns disciples left, Jesus began to brag on John the Baptist. Johns disciples apparently didnt get to hear the kind remarks, so neither did John. As far as we know, John never knew how pleased Jesus was with his life; at least here on earth. That illustration reminds me how it is for many faithful servants of Christ. We rarely get the privilege of knowing the good we have done. We seldom get to see how Christ has used us.

One time a friend organized a reception after a service at church. He had several men share with the audience what an impact I had on each of their lives. Even all these years later that remains a very humbling experience for me. I didnt have very much to say. I did comment to my wife on the way home that it was one of those rare, neat experiences in life. Most of the time, we do not hear of the good things we are doing for the Lord. (Which is only appropriate if God is to get the glory!)

I want to thank you for your service to the Lord. Whatever you do, God is using it to build His Kingdom. It may be as simple as being kind to a waitress or not complaining about waiting too long at the doctors office. It may be the pie you baked for your new neighbors or the prayer you offered for a friend. God is watching and storing rewards. You may never see the results of your efforts on earth, but one day you will!
