New Year 2
I have heard all about you, LORD, and I am filled with awe by the amazing things you have done. In this time of our deep need, begin again to help us as you did in years gone by. Show us your power to save us. And in your anger, remember your mercy. Habakkuk 3:2 NLT
It was a difficult time. Imagine being the prophet Habakkuk. Your people come to you looking for words of comfort. They want to know that soon the rain will begin. They want to sleep in peace again, unafraid of enemy attacks during the night. Wickedness is all around, and it is hard to find a righteous man. Being a prophet in Habakkuk's day was not a fun job!
Habakkuk has no good news to tell. Each time he calls upon the Lord, he receives no response. It does not seem that God is listening, and if He is, He isn't responding. Things just seem to be getting worse.
Habakkuk lived in a difficult day, and so do we! He had heard of the great miracles of God. Habakkuk had read abou t God's mercy to a fallen land. He knew that God was capable of parting seas, raising the dead, and raining down manna and quail. Habakkuk also knew that although God hated sin, He could also right a few wrongs and extend His hand of mercy.
So, knowing all this, Habakkuk's request makes perfect sense. He just asks God to be God...again! Habakkuk essentially says, God, show us your miracles of long ago! Let my generation see you at work!
Could you use a miracle or two today? Are there some seas in your life that need parting? Need an omer or two of manna to get you through the day? Would you like this year to be a better, deeper, more spiritual year in your life? Call on the God who still does miracles! Be like Habakkuk, and ask God to be God....again today!
