Still Fresh
They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, The Lord is upright; He is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in Him. Psalm 92:14-15 NIV
A 72-year-old sweetheart sent me a letter of encouragement a few years ago. She has a home-based ministry where she mails cards of support to those who are hurting. She said, I can't do much, but I can do this.
Now, please hear me, I am not saying that 72 is old! I know much better than that. What I am saying is that sometimes we plan our lives in such a way that when we are old enough and fortunate enough to retire, we assume that we quit active ministry as well.
Dear friends, may I urge you, in light of the word of God, to consider this mind set carefully. God has planted you to bear much fruit. The best days of your harvest may be in your retirement years! It would seem reasonable to me that if you are saved at an early age and you mature closer to the image of Chr ist each day, the longer you live, the more fruitful you can be.
Have we sent our best ministers out to pasture in search of something called youth and vitality? What about wisdom and stature? What about maturity and perseverance? Don't our more experienced Christians have something to teach those of us who are lesser in the faith?
And, to those of you who, like me, are still budding Christians: Shouldn't we aim our life in such a way that along with our retirement planning, we set goals, higher goals of service for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?
We need to be busy about our Father's work!
